New December babies thread!

Can not believe this is nearly another full thread!!

I didn't bother with the changing table was too much hassle. A changing mat was a must however I found one with a towel lining lovely as it was never cold for the baby. A normal towel will do.
Didn't use a nursing chair.

We had a second hand pram and it was in such good condition. We have gone for the Mothercare Roam this time. Will be buying a car seat that turns as I was forever hitting my daughters head when she was little.

This baby is so low down, the kicks feel so strange it's like it wants to escape already. 21w today.

I fainted at work today - off to the gp tomorrow for a blood test, I could be low on iron but I've been taking pregnancare tablets and 1 sachet of spatone a day, so I thought I'd be ok.

Hannahcarps27 before we went away I was told by my doctor there was a low risk and to just make sure I had I used lots of mozzie repellant. But I also visited a travel nurse who wanted me to cancel the holiday as in her opinion it was a big risk. So as you can appreciate it made me worry although we went anyway. So it was playing in my mind.
Told my midwife during my booking on appointment and she asked if I'd been bitten which I had been once or twice before I'd had the chance to cover myself in spray. So they just wanted to monitor me. I hadn't felt ill but the travel nurse mentioned not everyone has symptoms. (Think she intentionally wanted to put the fear of God in me)
Was happy to see all clear bloods but apparently until 20 weeks when head measurement are taken microcephaly can't be diagnosed so was happy for the all clear.

Lovely scan news- congrats to everyone who found out team blue or pink! We had ours yesterday and luckily all seemed well, measuring right on the average line for everything

We've started stocking up on a few bits. I got a Moses basket the other day, although still no idea what pushchair to go for!

I found chNging table really nice to have with my others - it's not an essential but I am thinking of getting one again this time, maybe IKEA they seem to have bits like that at decent prices. I wouldn't say nursing chair is essential either - only if you really fancy it cos they're quite expensive. I probably won't because i don't think we'll have the space anyway. With ds3 I found it easiest to feed lying down (once I'd got to grips with it all)

I have another midwife apt on Thursday. I saw the registrar last week (thought it was supposed to be consultant so wasn't that happy!) and she told me to come off the meds I had been on for Pcos, I had been told before it would probably be better to stay on it throughout. Now I'm a bit worried about my blood sugar without the meds so hope I can sort it all out with the midwife - I'm not feeling massively confident with my hospital so far though. Hopefully it's just me overly worrying

Different people find different things essential ... somewhere for baby to sleep, means of transport and clothes and nappies are all essential. Then it becomes more personal.

I didn't get on with nursing pillows, and didn't need a changing table. However, lansinoh and nipple shields, and lots of muslins were essential for me. Dd hated rocking chairs, so I'm glad we only borrowed ours!

We had a positive result for downs syndrome last night. Devastated, but no surprise given its heart problem, lack of nasal bone and my high screening result. We're continuing with the pregnancy and we'll love her, but I'm sad for her that she'll have so many health problems, and concerned at the impact on dd.

South Sorry to hear that. I'm wishing you lots of strength. Have taught some lovely kids with Downs...all of them with amazing parents.

Bigfam I'm trying to get a used co-sleeper but it's proving a little tricky. There don't seem to be many advertised in our area (looking for the Chicco one or the Babybay) and most of them are "collection only".

So sorry to hear that, South, hope you're okay. And hope you're getting lots of support already to help you get your head around the news.

Can I ask all of you who already have another child something I've been wondering about? How early before your due date are you planning to have back up babysitter options ready for your other child/children, gor your partner to be with you for the birth?

I'm in a bit of a pickle as we have no family here, and I'm planning for my mum to come and stay with us to be there for the birth to look after DD, especially as you can never tell what time a day you'll give birth or how long it'll take or if there'll be issues that require you to stay in hospital for a while. I don't really have anyone else I could rely on for looking after DD potentially in the middle of the night or for a longer period of time, everyone has full time work or small kids of their own and/or live too far away to get to mine quickly. My lovely neighbour who could have been relied on is sadly moving in a month.

So my problem is that I'm not sure how great it will be for my mum to stay for 2 weeks before the due date, which is the earliest I'd expect giving birth. We really do love each other, but we don't get along well living under he same roof for extended periods of time. And the last thing anyone needs is us having blazing rows just before I'm about to give birth. what do you think, when are you planning for, and what plans have you made?

Oh south im sorry you've had more devastating news. But as you say, you will love her regardless and she'll be a wonderful daughter and little sister

south sorry about the news, will be thinking of you and wishing you strength. I hope her health problems will be as minimal as possible, I'm sure she will be a very loved and happy little girl, and hope you can access plenty of support to help you feel prepared

london I had my mum come and stay 2 weeks before when expecting ds2. I went over due so she was there ages!!! This time I'll ask her to come either at my due date, or if we get an induction date then to come then. Tbh, she was a big help looking after ds1 when she was there all that time, ds2 was a massive baby and I could hardly walk at the end!! And she really enjoyed that time with ds1 too, but it is hard sharing a space with someone for so many weeks when you're overdue and grumpy! I would see how you feel near the time

mini if someone outed me as pg on my fb page I would be raging!!! And I would definitely delete the post as soon as I saw it!! I'd then probably pm them so they didn't repost!!! We haven't announced on fb and don't intend to. Haven't told most friends yet either. If any of the small number who do know referenced it in any way on fb I'd be mad.

South Speaking as someone with two younger sisters with Downs Syndrome please don't have any concerns at all about the effect on your dd, she will love and worship and protect her little sister. Congratulations on having such a special baby to bring into the world xx.

20weeks scan today went well had to to lay on my side to get the thigh bone measurements and the bottom of the spine checked and I made sure I told her from the start that myself and my dad didn't want or need to know the gender of bubble!

South you sound like you have an incredibly strong family unit, when your baby girl arrives you'll all have each other for strength, support & love. You're amazing and she will be too

Minispringroll I had the same problem, there was only three I could find advertised 2nd hand within 25 miles, hopefully it's because they're so good people keep hold of them hope you manage to find one, I have to say if I'd have known how handy they were I'd buy one new

I'm wide awake and having a bit of an anxiety issue about needing a second 20w scan, have read goodness knows how many scare stories online and now can't sleep! We have a poor history with boy pregnancies in my side of the family, had a weep about it and now can't sleep.

mini you can get the babybay at a good price if you order from Amazon.de - think it works out about 140ish brand new.

It's big news, so take your time letting it sink in and don't worry if you feel angry and sad, get as much support as you can. CF is different obviously, but if you want to chat about managing with kids who have lifelong health issues please do shout. You'll find lots of DS specific support out there too I'm sure.

In terms of essentials first, I wouldn't bother with a changing table personally, or a nursing chair, but it's up to you what you want! Do make sure you get a changing mat with raised sides though so you can use it on a normal table, bed etc without baby rolling off. I'd also second nipple guards and muslins as vital! Loads of nappies too!

london, we'd been wondering about this too but thankfully DPil came to the rescue and said they'd drop everything for us whenever it happens. They're about an hour away, so that should work ok. My main concern is DTs being well at the time new LO arrives, but only time will tell with that.

turnips, do bear in mind they call back to check regularly so try not to panic. When are you going back?

South I am sorry. You sound like a very strong family. We are all here if you need a chat or anything. One of my friends has DS and she is really lovely more so then some of my other friends. She will be an amazing little sister.

Thanks elodie back a week on Monday so not long to go. We got the feeling that the sonographer couldn't be arsed, clinic was 45mins late and my notes just say Feotal anomaly scan not completed. In and out in 10minutes, with DD it lasted ages.

Thanks Stubble. I had seen those, but I think DH being a tight git is rubbing off on me.
Bigfam 3 in a 25 mile radius wouldn't be so bad. I get results of 0 in a 50 mile radius. Closest seem to be about 120 miles away in most cases. Have spotted a few things in Bristol, so there might still be hope.

Barking I deleted the message immediately and sent her a PM. Also sent a text to my mum, who was furious. Her and my aunt don't get on at the best of times, which is why my aunt seems to have only just found out that I'm pregnant. Thing is, though, she didn't message me to congratulate...not really...she never messages me. I think she wanted my cousin to come and stay....which is very odd, since I hardly know him and he doesn't seem to particularly like me.

Minispringroll and bigfam I'm also looking for a second hand co-sleeper, had one with DD which we sold on (!) and found it so useful. But none on sale near me. But did you see that NCT lets you rent them? Don't know if it's worth it in the long run, though.

elodie and firwala thanks for advice on babysitting for other kids while giving birth, I think it's a good idea to wait and see how I feel nearer the time. If your mum is a big help with your other children, I can see how that would be great. The problem for me is that my mum is a bit in between. She is a very warm and loving person who always helps loads with playing with DD, who is mad about her, and sort of taking care of her hygiene and dressing, but she can't cook for her life, gets tired easily as she has diabetes - don't want to sound unthankful or horrible, realise that this is part of why she can't help so much - and can also get quite stressed over small things which then rubs off on me and has a tendency to speak before she thinks and say a lot of upsetting stuff without meaning to. I can have the best of intentions to get on with her before we are to spend time together, but after a while my patience wears thin and I snap and say mean things to her and it all blows up. So probably better to proceed with caution as to the amount of time she stays before the birth.
