miabt - xposted there. hugs to u about todays cancellation. book in a pampering bath session for tonight after james goes to bed?? spend the cinema money on a nice lotion (not ginger sanctuary!!)

maveta - bet the sun is shining there?? lst night sounds great but yep - u gotta take it easy today. physio said standing round for long periods in later pg really is not good for us - and can bring on early contractions - so in stern voice - keep those feet up and no sitting on kerbs today for you today madam!

panicking here as i havent got my nappies sorted. nearly cried last night as i dont know what to get for nappies and wraps....

Eddas · 20/01/2007 11:23

Maveta, with dd i had a moses basket which she used for 3 months in our room, she'd grown too long for it after that. Then we moved her into her own bedroom and into a cot. I know people say keep them in your room for 6 months but if you've got good monitors they're as good as having them in the same room anyway, with ours you could hear every little movement she made!

So i would say just buy a normal cot

maveta · 20/01/2007 11:25

Hi ´wee´onion..hahaha never did your name seem so accurate . Not noticed any changes in wee smell lately but when I have before it was a urine infection so worth checking it out if you aren´t sure. Either that or have you been eating asparagus??!

You are reading my mind, been doing nappy research AGAIN this morning..my list of what I am going to buy first is:

Diddy Diaper small
Motherease Rikki wrap small
Motherease Sandy´s Small
Totsbots bamboozle in size 1 aplix
Poppolino wool wrap

This is going to come to about 50 squids and I reckon it´s slightly more expensive that going straight for e.g. the tots bots pack of 15 with wraps which I think is 150. BUT I want to test drive a couple of different makes and think in the end it´s probably worth spending a little bit more and seeing what works with my baby rather than spending 150 quid to start and finding that those nappies don´t suit him at all.

I´m also definitely going to use disposables to start with anyway until I get the hang of that!! And occasionally throw one of these real nappies in to see how we get on and then decide who I want to buy more of.

My friend had a size 2 rainbow tots bots and it looked HUGE! ALthough they say it is a birth to potty nappy I found it hard to believe it would fit under any 0-3 month clothes! What sites are you looking at? Nappymania seems quite good but I´ll probably buy off babykind.co.uk as they ship abroad and stock bamboozles in size 1 popper which the other don´t. Phew. TELL ME WHAT YOU ARE DOING!! I´m new to this too and just as lost!

Really glad your dh went to the doc with you, I´m sure you´ll find it a great help that he´s more aware of what you are going through.

No joke re. contractions after standing for a long time, i swear by the time I got to the train station I was leaning over the railing to try and stretch my back and huffing and puffing thinking, shit early labour can´t be too different!! How little we know But yes, time to slow down AGAIN, it takes little things like this to remind us each time of our limitations I guess.

maveta · 20/01/2007 11:27

Eddas - great, very nice clear advice - exactly what I need! Too many conflicting opinions confuse me so much! thanks!

Weeonion - it is a BEAUTIFUL day - sorry to anyone having shitty weather but the sky is blue blue blue and temperature ridiculously mild for january. Having said that, think I´m off for a snooze...!

claricebean · 20/01/2007 11:37

Hi all, just been out and done a mammoth shop while DD2 is feeling ok (though v spotty). So now we can hole up inside for the week if we have to!!

Maveta, re moses basket / cot question, I have always kept LO in moses basket with me for first 2 or 3 months and then moved them into their own room and cot. IME babies are VERY noisy sleepers (although sometimes so quiet you are convinced something awful´s happened and have to put you hnd on their chest to make sure it´s moving LOL). Both babe and I had a better night´s sleep once they were in their own room. I know the current advice is 6 months in your room, but I guess it´s a personal decision. So I personally wouldn´t bother with a bedside cot.

MIABT - poor BIL, sounds awful. I hope it turns out to be nothing serious.

Maveta and weeonion - enjoy your sisters´visits. Mine comes end of Feb. Hurrah.

Liath - mmmm lasagne sound slovely.

Hi to everyone else

eca · 20/01/2007 11:40

morning all ! Sun streaming through (very dirty) windows here this am. Lovely.

Clarice - oh no! Big to you this morning. Now a poorly dd. You really are getting a steady flow of challenges to keep you busy. Wish you were a bit closer and I could pop round with some yummy meals to keep you going. I think nesting is kicking in and all I can think about is bulk cooking . Am i the only person who bulk cooks carrot cake?

MIAM - poooooooooo!! At your nice day out being cancelled. It's so gutting when you've been looking forward to something. Hope you manage to rearrance soon!

Liath - oooh! A bulk cook lasagne! Yipee! (sorry, clearly obsessed). I've got a HUGE pan (11 litres i think) for just such occasions.

CD - big >> to you this morning. Sorry you're still feeling a bit low. xx

Flump - had forgot you were HollyHormone. Can't keep track of name changes. Preg brain just can't keep up!

Maveta 3am! No way could i manage that at the mo! Must say I'm also very at your idillic (sp?) spanish lifestyle and stories of village parties. We did have fleeting thoughts about moving to Ibiza coz we'd done some work out there loved the locals and made lots of friends, but never quite happened. My dad lives in Portugal, but is a real expat and doesn't really hang out with the local people. he doesn't even speak portuguese which I really disapprove of!! at big sis coming! hope you have a great time! I feel like that when I see mine.

WO - sorry to hear you've got to wear the belt thingy. Buut hope it helps for you.

We have FIL over today. Afriad he does tend to wind me up sometimes. We've already had a spat over his 9/11 conspiracy theories. ohhh, it's going to be fun!

Anyway, back to the bulk cooking. Chicken and bacon stew today. Yummmeee!

claricebean · 20/01/2007 11:41

PS. Just when I thought I had the new status quo under control, have noticed a small amount of blood in knickers. Aaahhhhhh. It´s no more than a drop though. Am thinking it is probably due to fact that I´ve had v bad thrush for a couple of weeks now. Seem to remember something like that in a previous pg. Anyone else had this? Today is not a day I want to be dragging all three children to the hospital! And difficult to ask anyone to look after them as all my friends here have LOs so won´t really be chuffed with the pox thing.

claricebean · 20/01/2007 11:42

Ooh eca - carrot cake does sound yummy.

Right, off to be mummy nurse.

eca · 20/01/2007 11:43

sorry xposted there with lots of you! And sorry for all the awful typos!

eca · 20/01/2007 11:46

ok, breath deep clarice... Hopefully it is to do with thrush. I think i read that on a thread somewhere recently too. >

Virtual carrot cake on it's way to you.

weeonion · 20/01/2007 11:46

claricebean - hope u r ok... xoxoxo

muminabigtumi · 20/01/2007 12:10

Claricebean

Light blood can be a sign of thrush...I'd see how you go - any crampy ness or any sign of it getting heavier I wouldn't take the chance and get yourself checked out.

I'm sure SOPL had the same last week and took the "wait and see approach" as she had been told it can be a bitof thrush

HTH

hug
x

claricebean · 20/01/2007 12:29

Thanks girls, no more blood and no crampiness so will wait and see. at least the sun is shining (although we are house bound!)

maveta · 20/01/2007 12:44

wo - correction to previous post - what i´m buying comes to about 35 quid, was thinking in euros.. hope i didn´t confuse things! let me know how you get on x

hotlipsmummy · 20/01/2007 14:12

Afternoon ladies - well am feeling a million times more human after a good haircut!!

Sorry to hear some of you are not having good weekends with pg "scares", sick DCs and cancelled trips! Am slightly jealous re the pox as I would really like DS to have it before the baby comes - from my own selfish point of view it will be much easier to look after him! 4 kids at his nursery have had it over Xmas but we seem to have escaped!!

Re the bedside cot - I agree with what others have said, we used a moses basket for first few weeks and then transferred to cot in his own room.

Re real nappies - I had all sorts of good intentions when DS was born and bought a day pack from One Life. Sort of used them a bit but the "one size fits all" swamped DS as a newborn and made his clothes look funny!! Then shamefully have gotten out of the habit of using them. Am beginning to wonder whether I should start again (the poo is much easier to deal with once they are weaned alto 10times as stinky!!) esp as it would only be on non-nursery days. Then I just think should I get rid of the nappies to someone who would actually use them? Anyway would anyone here by interested? I have 5 nappies, 3 wraps in a small size and 2 (i think, need to check) in the next size, plus some liners. Am open to offers!

Off to a 2nd birthday party this afternoon so must get pressie wrapped (in xmas paper ) and card written!

1becomes3 · 20/01/2007 15:20

If any you lot with DC already could offer any advice on how to get DD from cot to bed I have just started a thread, All help welcome.

sleep

BigBellyCornflakeKid · 20/01/2007 15:24

WO - would try a few different nappies to start or get a nappy demo - as an ex advisor would say visit www.teamlollipop.co.uk and ask for an advisor to contact you - they may also have a hire kit you can borrow after babyis born - or you could buy some cheaply - like hotlips onelife dayset or some on ebay/mn. Would recommend onelife, sandys, totsbots and fuzzi bunz.

Mavetas list looks pretty good to try some out - wool wraps are good but remember they aren't completely waterproof - you kind of get a damp feeling LOL - but if you can deal with that they are good - bumpy wool wraps are good too.

My sister might be selling her motherease nappies (very similar to onelife) and wraps - will ask her what she has before goes onto ebay.

My boys have driven me potty this morning - but luckily dh received his flowers vibe and came home from golf with two bunches of tulips

off to put feet up

BigBellyCornflakeKid · 20/01/2007 15:25

1b3 - just put them in it LOL - less fuss the better - at night shove some cushions on the floor just in case she falls out . Mine always stayed in the bed - if you have problems keeping her in her room then a stairgate on her room door may be needed! I'm not into locking my kids into their bedrooms but some people do

liath · 20/01/2007 18:17

Well, it stopped raining here so we all went to the early learning centre (not like dd needs any more toys, but never mind) then out for lunch.

The monster lasagne is in progress.......

1b3 - dd is still in her cot and I have blanked from my mind the fact that we really need to get her into a proper bed. Same way I've blanked the need to potty train her or perhaps pursuade her that she doesn't really need a bottle at night any more. I'm taking the "we'll sort it after the baby's here" tack which I suspect I'll regret......

Weeonion - my email is picnikel72 at yahoo dot co dot uk, drop me a line, would love to meet up.

MIABT love your profile page. Have got around to doing mine now. Anyone else?

BigBellyCornflakeKid · 20/01/2007 18:46

Bit of a breakthrough - have decided on Joe or Jack for a name...I think My surname is Finn and my other two are Stan and Ted - quite like Sid aswell but don't want the same initials. No middle name yet - that would require even more grey matter!

Went out and bought some new books today - I really do love going to book shops - usually end up buying the boys books but avoided the childrens section today - they didn't have the what to expect breastfeeding book so may need to order it online.

Also went to boots for my witch hazel, arnica and tea tree - but forgot arnica and ended up getting lavender oil and bachs rescue remedy aswell...but got vouchers for £5 No.7 makeup so stocked up on some foundation too. Am starting to put stuff aside for my hospital bag - like BOGOFs of deodorant, moisturiser sanitary towles etc. did someone say you just pour the witch hazel straight onto the pad?

DH going to make nice dinner again and watch a film - more candles and romance Have a nice evening everyone xxoxoxoxoxox

runnyhabbit · 20/01/2007 18:59

Claricebean - I had some spotting when I had a nasty case of thrush just after Christmas. Maybe worth ringing the mw to be on the safe side?

Re - cots. We used a crib (the portland from mothercare) until ds was 8 wks old (I think) then moved him to cotbed in his room because he liked to spread out in the night. Although we are getting a moses basket for downstairs this time, just so lo is out of ds reach

1b3 - we converted ds cot to a bed just before Christmas (he's 20 mths) we put a safety gate across his bedroom door, and tbh he loves sleeping in his bed. We've taken the safety gate off his door now, but for the past few nights he's been waking up at 4am! Not sure if its the weather waking him, but it just means that we have to go and settle him. He will go off within a few mins, so we're hoping its just a phase. BTW we haven't bothered with a bedguard. We put a few cushions on the floor for the first few nights though.

WO - aren't these belts just the height of fashion I bet everyone will want one soon

Someone mentioned carrot cake - yummmmmmmmmm...

Went to birthday party this afternoon in soft play centre. Not sure who was more knackered - dh or ds. I sat with the mums and sent dh to run around after ds

Got to go...the big spare room tidy up has started, and dh is the mood to help me. Going to make the most of it

xx

CaptainDippy · 20/01/2007 21:00

Evening all!! Knackering day, but good fun - went to Family Group from churches "get together" - A "Bring & Share" sort of lunch at someone's house, which was nice and then onto the outlaws for pizza - DD's thoroughly worn out so hoping they might sleep a little longer tomorrow morning ......

Awwww, poor you Clarice - Can't believe wee DD2 has the dreaded Pox. Bugger. Best to get it out of the way before Bean4 emerges though - DD1 got the Pox when DD2 was 2 weeks old and had only just come home from SCBU - - Thankfully, she didn't get it (wee small mite that she was - only 4lb 6oz!) as she got immunity from my breast milk ..... Hope she gets better quick.....

Awwww, Cornflake - I LOVE the fact your boys are Ted and Stan - LOVING Sid, but understand about not wanting the same initials. Joe is lovely, not so keen on Jack - Ted, Stan and Joe ... Awwwww..... and yes - just "pour" the Witch Hazel onto a sanitary pad (literally!! )

Right, off to bed with book and hot choccy - DH in kitchen .... I am "on strike" this weekend!!

Just wanted to pop in and say hi! Am keeping up with reading the thread just not contributing much...too much to do and too tired is the reality. It is great hearing how everyone is planning things, the time seems to be rushing by now.

I have 2 days without any children or partner - pure bliss! Had a good shop today - baby well outfitted now just have to bite the bullet and decide on the bigger things! Will spend tomorrow sorting out things and squeezing into tight storage spaces while I still can.

Have my home visit from the midwife soon to discuss homebirth which is exciting - so far they have been so dismissive of my request due to a previous c-secion but finally one who is at least prepared to discuss it with me with a slightly more open mind.

My eldest DD is 9 in a few weeks and today I bought a book about dealing with 'Tweenies' (pre teens) just so I can get to grips with the changes that are starting to take place. So on one hand I am reading birthing books (to remind myself!) and on the other about the specific needs of 9 - 12 year olds - will have to try and not get them mixed up!

Enough of my rambling - you can tell I have not been around any people today! Take care all.

CaptainDippy · 20/01/2007 21:21

Good to "see" you zazas - Thanks for popping in!!

@ your "child and DP free" weekend!! How come? Enoy it!!

Did I say I was going to bed!!!?

OP posts:
eca · 20/01/2007 21:43

hey ladies

CD - hope you are having a nice relaxing evening.

zazas - glad to hear you've found a midwife who'll chat through homebirth with you. I have been dismissed/scared/told off by all mine so far because i'm a first-timer. Thankfully i saw one last friday who was so much more supportive and didn't have her own agenda. What I've found frustrating is not being able to talk it through without having to defend myself. I want to make my decision on what's best for me and baby, not on if I can win an arguement with the mw! I think the real reasons are to do with staff shortage and homebirth=more hours.
