leotwist if there is a chance of Zika Id avoid going we conceived in the Maldives and I can tell you I wouldn't wish the worrying about it on anyone. There's nothing we can do but wait xx

Eskerina81 · 08/05/2016 17:29

SolomanDaisy When I had DD in Holland 2 years ago some midwives were trialling gas and air so maybe you'll be able to have it.

kittyscot81 · 08/05/2016 18:03

I'm going to New York in a few weeks....am I being paranoid worrying about Zika there? My DH has assured me there are no locally transmitted cases that far north at present but I'm still worried! If it was a southern state or south America i think you can get a certificate for your insurance from the doctors so you can make a claim, but there is no travel advice for further north at present.

Mejse · 08/05/2016 18:26

Soloman so far I don't know much about the actual birth and pregnancy part here. I have heard both good and bad things, I am trying not to think about that too much. Not sure they offer gas and air here either. The outlook seems to be that pregnancy and birth are natural "not an illness" so you are expected to just get on with it all, not much sympathy.
To be fair Denmark is meant to be one of the best countries to raise a child, free child care and long maternity leave.
I was just having a bad day yesterday I think but it's mostly the actual parenting side of things I am worried about.
I was stressing about things like being expected to leave my child in their pram outside alone for any nap or just that I will do something that would be normal at home and will be judged for it here

flapjacklover · 08/05/2016 19:08

firawala Thanks I don't live on the mainland so we have only just got George so tiny selection and asda is just a distant dream for people like me, it might be worth taking a trip over to the UK to make savings though.... We will have to look into it and then probably have to stock on everything while there, things here can be so expensive!

becciandbump Yay! photo looks great so happy for you!

Thanks readingrainbow I have wanted to get back into sewing for sooo long and this seems like the perfect time Pinterest here I come :D

mejse blimey you have a lot on your plate! It seems we're going to be going through the same things at the same time. I know it's daunting but at the end of the day its what you and hubby think is best for your child and your family. My in-laws take the view that I love: 'We will be there for you guys in everything that you do, we will help you with anything that you need, but you have to ask, we will never suggest or tell you what to do, we've had our life and this is your time to live yours as you wish.' We know they are there if we need them. I am confident that you will be able to find a way that you are completely comfortable with while keeping the traditions and elements of baby raising both Danish and British. You have 33 odd weeks left to figure out the basics the rest will come. Flowers

Bella congrats on getting a date! not long until you get first look at LO

I feel a bit like a slacker, I'm a housewife who works with a charity 15 hours a week, everyone else on here is so busy, I hope I can up my game in time.

TinySalmon · 08/05/2016 19:20

Me too flapjack! Full time girlfriend but I also volunteer at a charity 8 hours a week :) Never thought I'd feel so rewarded working for free!

I feel for you also - Jersey, I hear, is very expensive but agree with readingrainbow that's SUCH a good idea to modify clothes to make maternity wear!! Literally in love with this idea because I hate the selection on offer, even from nice places all the maternity lines look exactly the same. I had a peek yesterday in JoJo Maman Bebe and the summer dresses are gross :( I'd rather make my own one-off pieces. Time to whip out the sewing machine!

fiddlesticks123 · 08/05/2016 19:21

Gosh these threads fill up quickly! I haven't been keeping up to date with it but thought I'd just drop by and say I hope everyone's enjoyed this sunny weekend! It made me worried to be more obviously pregnant in the August/September heat! I'm not a great lover of being too hot...

I had what I thought was my booking apt a couple of weeks ago now, turns out as I'm under shared care between two NHS trusts, that was just the first of two booking appts Hmm not a wonder the NHS is on its knees the extra work a lack of inter-trust communication causes. Anyway, that was the trust who will look after me, not the trust I'll give birth in so I've got both my booking appt and first scan booked in with trust number 2 on Friday 20th May - soooo excited!!!

kippersandcurtains · 08/05/2016 19:32

Hello troops. I am back from a two week holiday in Mallorca, very nice it was too. Apart from the fact I couldn't open the fridge/dishwasher/bin, couldn't go in the sun without burning, couldn't sleep and couldn't drink wine… Nah, it was lovely, and the boys had a riot. Just kind of caught myself wishing the timing was a little better!
Tried to catch up but thread has been steaming forward. Loved hearing of happy scans (and two babies for notaclue!) and hello to newbies.
Scan date 23rd May - my husband's birthday - so two weeks to go before I get the chance to peer within. Like you all I am keeping my fingers crossed for a healthy heartbeat so that I can start to look forward and not live quite as much in the absolute 'now'.
Quick re-intro: I am 37 (will be 38 when baby is born) and this will be our third child (two boys already aged 3 and 4). We live in the Welsh borders (English side), so nowhere near Watford!
I am glad to have a summer pregnancy - loved it with Sept-born DS1. I loathe the struggle to put on socks - and worse the horrors of maternity tights!
Look forward to sharing the journey with you all.

weechops · 08/05/2016 20:11

flapjack I don't work at all Grin stay at home mum since dh started working away oooh coming up 8 years now! It doesn't work for every couple but it's perfect for us.

I can't remember who was talking about zika, but we are supposed to be relocating to Texas for a few years and dh thinks I'm over reacting by insisting me and the dc stay here in the uk til I give birth then join him maybe March time. No way am I risking anything!

SolomanDaisy · 08/05/2016 20:14

Eskerina, ooh, exciting! I'll ask at my next appointment.

Mejsje, I know what you mean! I have just embraced being the crazy foreigner for some stuff. I am never going to be comfortable leaving a baby in the house and the monitor with the neighbours, which is common here. But some bits I have actually liked the Dutch way. Sending kids on playdates after school with families you don't know, letting young kids play out in the street without supervision, that sort of thing turns out to work well!

leotwist · 08/05/2016 20:38

It was me talking about Zika, weechops. Personally, I'd definitely avoid Texas for now, if you can. As someone has already said, the worry just isn't worth it. We've now decided that I should give the States a miss, especially the south, till after the birth. While it could all be just a scare-scheme or cover-up of some sort, it could just as easily be worse than anyone's prepared to admit for fear of causing widespread panic. The repercussions just aren't worth it and, if it turned out badly, my husband and I know we'd blame ourselves (or each other?) horribly...

weechops · 08/05/2016 21:16

leo I totally agree. It may be absolute twaddle, but I'm like fine dining for mosquitos on every holiday I've been on!

I'm admitting defeat and heading up to bed. I'm shattered! Night all Smile

swancourt · 08/05/2016 21:47

Oh my goodness, I'm supposed to be going on a work trip to North Carolina in late October. I reckon I'll be about 28-30 weeks by then, depending on when we firm up the dates, so was already wondering if I could get out of it on those grounds. Zika hadn't even crossed my mind. Do you think best avoided?

eskerina, do I know you? I used to be takethatlady.

flapjack yes, yes, and YES to the worry!

flapjacklover · 08/05/2016 22:17

TinySalmon it really is and no choice here really isn't great, but all our family is here and its super safe, the kinda place people leave their back doors open, obviously there are some dangers but quite a lot safer, great for families it's just cash flow.
Thanks to tiny and weechops I'm not feeling like quite as much a slacker

kippers Glad you had a lovely time away welcome back!

barkingtreefrog · 09/05/2016 05:04

lily I didn't read your post as you asking people to justify their early scans!!!
I had an early scan after bleeding, then the normal scan at the ivf clinic, followed by one a week later just because of my mc history, and I'm having another one this week. I can't handle the levels of anxiety if I have to wait longer Sad. I'm having the harmony scans for the same reason. I can't remember who asked but the harmony scans are done with a blood test as well, and you can find out risk levels of various chromosome problems. It's most accurate for downs syndrome, it doesn't pick everything up, but I'm hoping if I am told I'm low risk for anything that might cause a mc it might help me feel more able to plan for the future. You also get to know the gender from the blood, so that's totally accurate. The 12 week harmony scan is also apparently far more detailed than the NHS one.

Leo I've had a similar experience with the NHS. We were allowed one round of IVF where we live, and that didn't work (or the frozen embryos from that round) so we went private. I had been told by the recurrent miscarriage clinic that I would be closely monitored if we managed to get pregnant a 4th time, but because we got pg via private ivf epu weren't interested in giving me a reassurance scan. It makes me so angry, if I wasn't infertile and had got pregnant without help then there wouldn't be an issue, I feel like I'm being punished twice!
I called the pregnancy support service and it was like trying to get past a bouncer, being grilled to check I had had at least three miscarriages and they had to be consecutive, and then I was told how lucky I was to be getting a scan within two weeks as they were really busy but had one cancellation and that was it so take it or leave it. Hmm

weechops you wouldn't be getting me to Texas anytime soon!

Mejse · 09/05/2016 06:00

Thanks flapjack your in laws sound lovely! My parents have a very similar out look. I'm pretty confident that me and DH will be able to find a nice balance and with the in laws I will just need to develop thicker skin before the baby is here.
I'm not sure if it's because DH was so young when he had his son that his family are constantly telling him what to do and contradicting him. It might actually be better this time.

soloman there are a few things I quite like here too. They are so laid back and very trusting of their kids. I just need to get a bit better at embracing being the crazy foreigner.

Anewleaf · 09/05/2016 06:07

Morning everyone. its Monday morning and I've been up for and getting ready to work and I'VE just vommed 3 times in the and around the toilet. I'm a complete mess and really scared to take the day off work as my school is outstanding and doesn't look kindly to days off. I'm lying down on my side now dh wants me to get a docs appointment for anti sickness tablets I had last pregnancy as they seemed to do the trick. Although they made me incredibly drowsy! How is everyone else doing? I'm 7+3 and after hg in last pregnancy praying this isn't only beginning..

NotAClue82 · 09/05/2016 06:35

Hi Anewleaf, sorry to hear you're feeling poorly Sad. It must be really hard to take time off as a teacher (not to mention teaching a lesson whilst feeling sick!), but if you are vomiting frequently you probably need the day off! Perhaps it would be good to see your GP, even if it's just to discuss your options.

What time do you have to leave for work? I sometimes find, after vomiting first thing, that nausea gets slightly better mid morning?

Hope all the other women are getting on well! This thread moves very fast & I struggle to keep up a little! Personally I'm still dealing with the news I'm pregnant with twins, but other than the total shock & near constant sickness I'm actually feeling pretty good. My husband has been doing a lot for me though, and he is going away for work for two weeks now, so I'll have to see how I manage with work&preschooler without him!

Anewleaf · 09/05/2016 07:03

Hi notaclue congrats on the twins! Such a lot to take in!
I find lying on my side makes the nausea not as bad but I had this all day yesterday with no let up. Impossible to teach like this but you always get guilt.
Crackers and water seem to ease things somewhat.
I'm having crazy dreams at the moment too...

NotAClue82 · 09/05/2016 07:44

Crackers and water are my saviours tooSmile. Hope you start to feel better soon!

FluffyPickleMonster · 09/05/2016 07:56

Morning ladies, I can't remember who said that they had to do their trousers up with a hair tie but I've just had to do the same with my work trousers! They fitted on Friday but no chance today!! Shock
I have my private early scan tonight, I'm 8+1 by my sums. I'm really anxious, just want to know what's going on in there now.
Have a good day peeps Smile

NotAClue82 · 09/05/2016 08:02

Good luck with your scan fluffy!

Eskerina81 · 09/05/2016 08:35

I don't think so swancourt, sorry. I'm brand new on mumsnet (and haven't managed to figure out how to properly tag people yet!)

fiddlesticks123 · 09/05/2016 08:49

Does anyone have the NHS number to call regarding the prescription exemption card to hand by any chance?

I had my letter through and I need to call them to confirm my date of birth but left my letter at home!

TIA x

SouthDownsSunshine · 09/05/2016 08:56

anew I would call in sick and go to the gp. If you had HG last time, it's worth taking the tablets as early as possible. I had borderline HG last time (I'm not convinced but a GP said I had it), and it's been much better this time. I think it's because I'm not working so I can rest and eat as my body dictates. I think I'll have to return to work next week though.
