Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
BabyMadwithBump · 21/02/2007 16:06

I'm at the new Derby supper hospital I dont know what to think I've been afew times in the last 4 months for one thing or another, and it just seems abit bare, I might ask for a look around the Delievery bit next time I'm up there which will be in about 3 weeks for my 20 weeks scan! Where abouts in B-O-T do you live, how long you lived there!?

stretchmarks · 21/02/2007 16:41

We're in Alrewas so about half way between Burton and Lichfield. We moved here about 18 months ago and I love it apart from all the work we've got to do on the house - although DH has picked up a pace since I fell pregnant again. It's worked out quite nice as well as DS1 will start school next September so I'll be able to get to know some of the other mums hopefully.

Augustbride · 21/02/2007 19:44

Just wanted to jump in as another former Burtonian. Do you know if the lichfield unit does visits like Queens does? Quite fancy a look round but is probably a bit soon as I am not 4 months yet!

BabyMadwithBump · 21/02/2007 19:48

Augustbride where in derbyshire do you live, I live in derby itself!?

Augustbride · 22/02/2007 07:47

I am in South Derbyshire (Swadlincote) but lived in Burton for 20+ years. Used to shop in Derby a lot but since the chaos in the Eagle centre started I haven't been in for about six months. Are they done yet ?!?!

mum2george · 22/02/2007 12:04

Jem1969 have you mentioned the itchy skin to your midwife. It is most probably nothing but its one of the things that our midwifes ask you to let them know about.

loler · 22/02/2007 12:28

I had the choice to go to Queens too - had last 2 in Stafford though so am sticking there. Lots of friends have gone to Lichfield and had really nice experiences there.

We sometimes go shopping in Derby but always end up losing the car. I've got a friend in Michelover (sp?) that's about as far as I dare to drive in myself without getting stuck in the traffic system. Have to got to Burton for work and have similar problems there! Maybe it's my shrunken brain and not the roads!

tokentotty · 22/02/2007 12:30

Hey Jem, I have to admit to having had THE itchiest breasts until just recently. Was a bloody nightmare as when working with all men they're not the easiest things to scratch discretely ! Was driving me nuts I have to say. My boss told me that his wife was really, incredibly itchy and was taking Piriton (I think) to try and help even a little. This is the same woman who scraped the sand off emery boards with her teeth and ate it, constantly through both pregnancies though....

kiteflying · 22/02/2007 13:17

Hi everyone, I haven't been on here since we all did that quiz a couple of weeks ago but it is good to see everyone's pregnancies are progressing so well. Lizziemun, I hope your Dad is getting on better.

I had some scary, although minor, bleeding just before my 12 weeks date last Tuesday, and felt very alone with my fear as I am STILL not booked in with a consultant anywhere (thanks to my inert, ever unhelpful GP's inability to convince St Thomas' to take me on). I could not attend an EPU without being booked in (and of course this was my fault for not accepting a lesser hospital) so was told to go to A&E. Luckily, my employee insurance covers "threatened miscarriage" (which of course I refused to believe it was but...)so after some longish phone calls I was trotted off to the Portland late last Tuesday evening to see a consultant there. Well, it turned into a complete blessing, that tiny bleed, because not only did the scan show a dancing, waving, perfectly formed little baby bean but the consultant suggested right off that he may as well do a nuchal scan while I was there and ordered all my bloods for the Barts' test to be done as well. I was so grateful I cannot tell you. My faith in humanity was utterly restored by this man's unasked for kindness. I was a little disappointed that I had the benefit of this lovely private scan without my boyfriend being with me, but, again without being asked, the consultant printed off a disc for me to take home. Joy.

It still took me a week to get back for the blood tests (irrational fear) and now I am waiting for the results to come through this afternoon. Distracting myself by telling my story here and reading all of yours.

Also, I am still having the occasional recurrence of this funny bleeding. It just doesn't seem enough to go back but I have not had any bleeding through my first trimester except for some implantation bleeding at 6 weeks plus 3 (which I also thought was a miscarriage) so it is all a bit strange.

I am starting to feel more energetic and less sick this week, but ms still comes on in the afternoon, and bizarrely my sense of smell is as acute as it was in the first two months - everyone on the tube smells horridly unwashed, and I had to agree with Jem's comment further down this thread on the smell of buttered toast! My boyfriend gets up an hour earlier than I do for work and I have had to ban him from toastmaking.

Maternity clothes - which I had dreaded - are such a godsend! I am so relieved not to have the pinch of a normal suit waistband bugging me all day. And I feel less fat and more pregnant in my stretchy lovelies. Cannot find jeans to fit though. I have some Funmum ones but they are too high waisted and even with a bigger bump I cannot see them ever fitting. I am tempted to get in some lovely Isabella Oliver for work clothes. But the models on the website are rather formidable! How are they wearing stillettos??

Like everyone else, I am still waiting to feel the "bloom". I am desperate to feel well enough to get back to the gym and build up some strength for the lovely natural birth I have planned!!!

tokentotty · 22/02/2007 13:31

Hey KF,

So glad you've been seen and had your mind put at rest. You must be feeling so much better after all that worry. Is wonderful to enjoy seeing the baby being active and moving around. That was also fantastic that you were treated so well at the hospital and being given a disc for your boyfriend is such a luxury !!

kiteflying · 22/02/2007 13:37

Thanks TT. I was thrilled. Actually tears were running down my cheeks seeing the bean leaping about and so full of life - and I had not even known how worried I was before that moment. I was tempted to sign up for the Portland, as it was such a lovely experience, but alas the funds required are close to ten thousand pounds.

tokentotty · 22/02/2007 13:46

And KT, that's if everything's straight forward I believe. Think it's one of those places that the little extras would pile up at too. Besides, there was a thread on here somewhere in which a journalist from a glossy magazine was on asking about NHS birth experiences etc. The upshot from the people on there was that anyone working in the medical negligence field of law definitely did not advocate going private...

kiteflying · 22/02/2007 14:02

If only NHS hospitals did not treat women so appallingly though. I am sure the relief I felt last week was something to do with how much I have felt ignored so far.

tokentotty · 22/02/2007 14:23

Just checked the stats thread and see this is your first too. Think it's so disconcerting when all of this is completely alien to us and we've no idea where to turn to or what to do, and sites like this are the only places you can get good information. Is sad when what should be a wonderful experience begins as yours obviously has, because of lack of guidance and help from the NHS.

Just as a suggestion, a few of us on here went here for scans and all have found them fantastic I believe. The time and care they take is excellent and when it comes to going for your next scan (hopefully with your boyfriend) you'll be able to really enjoy it.

kiteflying · 22/02/2007 15:00

Yes, my first precious and an IVF success after a long year of failure and despair. We are so endlessly grateful but it is also doubly scary being left to your own devices. We had such good care at our IVF clinic (the Hammersmith, and on NHS) that it was a shock to have nowhere to turn as soon as we were discharged. We could not help wondering - Why spend so much public money getting us pregnant if you don't care whether the baby survives the first trimester?

As it turns out the little cover I have on my work health insurance (no cover for pregnancy complications or anything pregnancy related but only for miscarriage!) has been a boon. We will certainly consider having a private scan at twenty weeks, although we would hope to be seeing a consultant by then as well!!

I am so glad I found this ante-natal club on mumsnet so early. It has really given me the peace of mind that some adequate GP care might otherwise have done.

tokentotty · 22/02/2007 15:20

Have you got a midwife yet KF ?

peanuthead · 22/02/2007 15:33

Hi Kiteflying
We had fertility treatment too (4 iui's) and I have to say comparing private to nhs seems to depend on individual hospitals as much as whether you pay or not. I had the worst experience ever at the Lister - we got our money back as I complained (alot) but they were atrocious. Sloppy and rude was the least of it. Brilliant treatment at Holly House though - oh and they made us a baby.

All the pg (nhs) stuff has been at St Thomas;s and I have to say they've been great as well (so far) - all the staff have been so supportive. I had to go in for a huge bleed and they were fantastic - even in a and e. I think it's totally luck of the draw rather than what you spend.

It does make it extra scarey when you've been through so much just to get pg - and I take my hat off to anyone who's been thru IVF, we were about to start and I was dreading it - so draining, emotionally and physically.

Re bumps and maternity wear etc. I'm huge around my stomach now and can't fit into any clothes apart from one pair of jeans ( as long as not freshly washed!) but I couldn't say I've really got a bump - I mean it's not hard and tight and babylike - just like I've had a huge meal or got bad wind (or eaten too many pies...)Does that count as a bump? At 13+5

I'm also feeling much much better than I was at the weekend (sorry beakyman) not blooming by any means but not sleeping all afternoon and not dizzy and although still queasy I#m not really puking (famous last words..)

I actually tried crystallised ginger today(having tried ginger drops very early on to no avail) and it's actually working! Unbelievable after biting off everone's head who suggested it. MAybe cos nausea is not as bad it's now working? It's horrible, mind you... but maybe worth going back to for those of you still suffering.

HAve just booked 3 (count em) holidays online so I must be feeling better!

tokentotty · 22/02/2007 16:08

Peanuthead - well done on booking the holidays love !! I know you said before that you'd been really not up to travelling because of not conceiving and then you'd not wanted to because you felt so rough. Therefore, today is definitely a day of celebration that you're feeling so much better and so confident and it's great you're going on your hols !!

BTW - am massive !!! Get loads of comments now (mainly of the 'go on fatty' variety) and clothes are very much more comfortable from maternity ranges !

stretchmarks · 22/02/2007 16:50

HI Everyone,

Jsut got back from the hospital as I had a slight bleed earlier today. They couldn't find anything that was causing it. We heard baby was fine and they checked eveything so hoping now it was just one of those unexplained things that happens.

I got worked up into a bit of a state though this morning as the bleeding was exactly the same as I had at my last MC - of which my due date is only 3 weeks away

boobooma · 22/02/2007 17:15

Hi stretchmarks, sounds really worrying after having an mc, what an awful wait for you over the next few weeks. Have you got your next appointment with your midwife booked in?

kiteflying · 22/02/2007 17:16

TT, no midwife yet! No booking in appointment. No help. We are thinking of going for a private midwife in place of a private consultant - I think it will alleviate some of the anxiety around the hospital issue!

Peanuthead - I totally agree with you that it is the hospital rather than the public/private divide that is the measure. We also had a nightmare experience of a private IVF clinic, ACU at UCH, who were just mindbogglingly awful to us. We have never paid them the final bill, and still brood about potentially reporting them to the ombudsman. Ironically we had a letter from them recently assuring us that it was not their clinic that was the subject of the Panorama report!!

The Hammersmith was our NHS number coming up, but the medical care was brilliant, and yes, we are pregnant. I cannot recommend this clinic highly enough.

So pleased that you are booking holidays. Like you, travel was out of the question for us while we were TTC and in and out of clinics, and then the last three months I have just wanted to curl up as soon as I don't have to put on a brave face for work. Even restaurants have been a trial. Luckily my evening sickness lifted just in time for Valentines Day!! So we are now planning a weekend or plus to Venice or Rome.

My bump is also "squishy" and round all over rather than being the little apple I thought I would have!! Because I have gained a cup size as well I really do just look "bigger" all over from the waist up (thankfully I have not grown a pear instead of an apple!)

My morning sickness antidotes have evolved somehow over the past three months. I found crystallised ginger too sweet, but american ginger ale was bliss, and fresh limes crushed into soda water was my absolute top "fix" for anything from the smell of pizza cooking to ordinary no-rhyme no-reason pregnancy sickness.

I also found that a rigid "eat something every two hours" worked for me, and even now, if I sleep in or I forget to snack I get a relapse. Toast straight after work was, until Feb, a failsafe precaution in the evening when I HAD to feel well enough to cook and eat a meal in an hour, but now my sense of smell has gone all funny again and I cannot bear the smell of cooked toast, and cannot eat any bread at all - this has only been in the last week! Baby obviously does not like BREAD. It is a weird and wonderful journey.

boobooma · 22/02/2007 17:17

Ladies, I am also looking porky, think I look about a month further on than I did last time, they say once the muscles have stretched once ... slack alice.

kiteflying · 22/02/2007 17:20

stretchmarks - sorry, I was posting my long post and missed your news. So sorry to hear about your worry. Are you also twelve weeks? Hope it works out for you.

tokentotty · 22/02/2007 17:36

Am off to kick the boys' arses tonight at pool so am going to ignore their teasing about me being too fat to play.....

KF, was going to mention to you about a private midwife. That's the route I went down and I already adore her !! She's a much older lady with heaps of experience (even an MBE for services to midwifery !!) and she comes round to my house to visit me as well as arranging anything else. I know she's going to be there for me and give me every bit of help to make this as pleasant as possible and I feel calmer about everything.

Stretchmarks - am glad to hear you've had a thorough check over today but I know you're bound to still be really concerned, especially after your last miscarriage. Got everything crossed for you. xxx

stretchmarks · 22/02/2007 18:21

I am 16+4 so past the 12 weeks mark but having had the missed MC last time I am hyper alert to anything being not quite right this time.

They were lovely at the hospital though checked everything out and told me to contact them again if I was worried.

Think I need a holiday too ladies !!!
