OK, so I have the positive pregnancy testS! - we have told one person, are agonising about who else to tell when, we have bought two books on pregnancy.

But what happens next? Do I just phone the doctor tommorow to make an appointment, should I wait a couple of weeks? Then what happens?

Total newbie to this, no idea what I am doing at all!

Hi all

Went for my follow up scan on Friday - sac has grown and she thought she saw yolk sac, so that is good.

Follow-up-follow-up (!) scan booked for Feb 2nd, so 8+6 weeks to ensure that everything is progressing well.

Have to say that for a bit of abdominal pain & backache, with no bleeding, they are being very thorough!!

Louise 6weeks today!!

Nettee · 13/01/2007 16:42

Hi everyone, great to hear good news after scans and blood tests

sorry to hear that you are beginning to struggle Jess. Must have been lovely to see a heartbeat though

My ms started at 6 weeks last time and I am dreading the same thing coming round again. Slight nausea at the moment which I can deal with no problem. Looking forward to the 2nd trimester already!

plasmon · 13/01/2007 19:33

Thanks Edie.
Hope everyone is feeling well. I'm really tired.

missmapp · 14/01/2007 15:57

Hi all and welcome plasmon

So glad to hear your news eddiemecredee you must be so relieved. Have you got a date for another scan?

Lou, you must be pleased and v.impressed with the car you are getting.

Ive had a busy weekend with inlaws visiting so am feeling a bit tired now. Ds asleep upstairs so may try for a rare nap myself, shame about the ironing!!

Ive had lots of weird feelings in the abdominal area, like period pains, no bleeding, cant remember if i had this last time. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hope everyone well.Sorry your struggling Jess, i hope you feel hungry again soon - you need the energy! I remember a friend of mine moaning when she told everyone at 12 weeks. They kept asking how she was, and did she want to sit etc and she felt great, but 2mths before when she felt c**p noone knew, so noone could help!! we havnt told anyone yet (only parents) but maybe its easier if you do!!

Have a gd week.

missmapp · 14/01/2007 15:58

Oops Lou mean impressed witht he care you are getting, unless your getting a car of course!!

missmapp · 14/01/2007 16:00

Nettee, Im sure you will be fine, nausea is a gd sign, it will be the 2nd trimeser before you know it!

EdieMcredie · 14/01/2007 16:40

Lou

Im in a similar postion to you I think. I had some backache for 3 days (quite bad) and so im now under the care of the EAPU who have said they won't discharge me until I see a heartbeat on the scan. My last one did not show a yolk but at only just 5 weeks they said it was too early. Going back next Friday and hopefully will see one (or two) then (they saw two sacs).

Have had a previous mc.

I haven't had any bleeding...

Flossam · 14/01/2007 18:21

Hello all I've decided its time I was brave and joined you - been worrying about jinxing it! I'm about 5 and a half weeks and due 12/9. I had a m/c last october, hence the reticence. I've had a couple of very small bleeds and may go to the GP's this week to see if I can get referred to EPU for an early scan as I'm feeling really anxious. I have one DS who is 22 months, I'm going with all the medical lot here as I'm also a nurse and I live in Bristol.

Edie, has your back pain eased off now? Still got things crossed for you!

Missmap, yes I have been getting tummy cramps too. From before when AF was due. Twice when I have had them I've bled but only tiny amounts. So i'm hopeful that as it stands things are ok. I do remember having exactly the same last time with DS, but I just got on with it then. This time I have taken to the sofa and been looked after by DP, who is, so far being really quite considerate! We will see how long that lasts eh?

As for telling people, well I've not done very well there. Where I work there has been numurous pregnancies in recent years, and people just seem to tell as soon as they know. Two people have guessed, I told another last week and my manager and also managed to let it slip to two more when we were discussing mat leave! I'm going to wait untill weds (i'll be 6 weeks) and tell everyone then. I think.

My main symptoms at the moment are sore boobs (when I wake in the morning they feel like they are on fire!), the tummy cramps and on and off nausea. Some days I feel terrible and other days I convince myself I must have been making it all up! Anyway, I like to talk so i am sorry, I'll add me to the list if thats ok!

YEY!!!!

WELCOME FLOSSAM!!!!!

Yes I had my scan and good so far-may even be twins.

My boobs are extremely painful tonight....ouchhhh.

HELLO EVERYONE ELSE

AnguaVonUberwald · 15/01/2007 09:52

Wow Ediemcredie - possible twins, how exiting and scary. Twins run in my family, so I am getting various people pointing that out at the moment, but am hoping for just one this time around. (its my first).

Here's a strange one for everybody. Rather than a craving I have completely gone off anything sweet. The sweetest I can cope with is dried fruit. Even some fruitjuice seems too sweet. As for chocolate, etc - forget it. Anyone else experianceing this?

OP posts:
maretta · 15/01/2007 11:47

Funny you should say that Angua because I think I'm the same about sweet things - although I am finding room for some 85% cocoa chocolate.

I've never had cravings before, i've just gone off food in general for a few weeks. This was very handy last time I found out I was pregnant (also January) as all the Christmas excess pounds were gone very quickly. I was relying on the same this time. Nevermind - I've just eaten a tub of chilli stuffed olives on the way back from the supermarket.

My only other symptoms really are occasional slight sicky feeling and light headedness. I had the sore breasts thing first time round so I know that's not so nice.

SheRaPOP · 15/01/2007 12:22

Welcome Flossam!

Hi everyone, just an update on my weekend. I went to both St George's and Mayday on Saturday to check out their tours. So funny, as I was the only one there who wasn't showing - everyone else looked like they were just about to pop! Anyway the hospitals were very different, it was very interesting to see them both and I'd recommend it to anyone who's unsure about where to give birth (although perhaps you don't need to go as early as I did, hehe). I went to St George's EPU reception desk to ask a couple of questions about when the first scan is, and she gave me some paperwork to fill out - to have a scan! I gave it back to her and said I was just enquiring at this stage as I was only just coming up to 5 weeks, and she said it was still possible to do a scan, check it wasn't ectopic and possibly even see a heartbeat! It's nice to know you can get this done there if you are concerned, but DH was there with me and I thought it might take too long as we also had the tour at Mayday to get to. Mayday have a lovely new birthing centre - which we didn't get to see unfortunately. They do tours for that on different days (why not do it all in one?!) and it sounds lovely, although I was surprised when they told us they only use 2 rooms out of the 7! This is because they don't have enough midwives to spare... it seems a bit of a waste to have lovely new facilities but not be able to give more than 2 women at a time the chance to use them. St George's midwife led unit is currently being renovated, and they told me it should hopefully be ready by the end of July.

My symptoms at the moment also include the light crampy menstrual type pains. I've been reading a lot of the other forums though, and these seem to be fairly common so I'm trying not to get too worried about it. And my belly is definitely bloated... makes me look pregnant already! I wonder if this is something that will ease? I don't want to start showing too early (because of work).

Jess, hope you are feeling a bit better. What day is your scan booked for? I will cross all my fingers and toes for you!

potoroo · 15/01/2007 13:00

Can I join too? Just got the BFP this morning - only just over 4 weeks. Of course I'm not allowed to tell anyone in RL yet. This will be the second time around - I have a DS who is 21 months.

Ajasec · 15/01/2007 20:09

Hi everyone,
SheRaPOP - I had crampy pains with both my DDs, and sharp 'pinching' type pains at the sides of my abdomen for ages, and everything was fine, so hopefully there's no need to worry.

I'm on pg number 4 (1st pg ended at 12 wks) and am now 6 1/2 weeks. I look about 20wks with a MASSIVE bump. I've had to tell people, because it's so obvious, and forget getting into my jeans. Is this normal, does anyone know? Bit worried.

Flossam · 15/01/2007 22:20

I think with subsequent pregnancies you do get bigger, Ajasec. I have a usually spacious uniform which felt decidedly less so today. I'm only on baby no 2 though so suspect I am more bloated than anything else. Gut is supposed to be working slower so stands to reason.

Welcome poteroo!

SeRaPop, I haven't been anywhere or done anything yet!! Last time I went and made midwifes appointment and ended up not needing it, so I am vearing on the extreme side of caution. I shall probably try and make one when I am 8 weeks or so as they don't see you untill around twelve weeks. Which unit do you think you will go for then? I would quite like a home birth but DP is dead against it, so i shall have to see. If not I know which unit I should like to go to already.

Angua, I'm off choccies but not sweet. I have half a box of dark chocolate thorntorns which i cant bear the idea of atm! We have had about three boxes of them at work today and I have had one!! Sweets go down quite a bit better. I'm really trying to get my five a day and plenty of calcium.

Edie, hope all is still well with you. Will your next scan be on Friday?

SheRaPOP · 15/01/2007 23:23

Hello Potoroo What a cool name - I'd love to know how everyone decided on their nicknames! Mine is just short for She-Ra, Princess of Power, a show I absolutely adored as a kid.

Flossam I'm not sure which I'll go for at this stage, because I'm still thinking about going back to Australia. But I'll probably tell the doctor St George's to start with. I've heard good and bad about both hospitals. Mayday actually looked very clean though (I think they've renovated recently), and the midwifes we spoke to were really lovely. I too like the idea of a home birth, but even my mum who is a midwife suggested it might be good to have my first not too far away from assistance. I guess she sees lots of stuff can go wrong, although hopefully none of us will have to worry about that. So I think the next closest thing to a homebirth would be to go to a birthing centre/maternity led unit where they try to have as little 'medical interference' as possible. This means no epidural of course... perhaps I'll regret that when I'm in labour (!) but my mum managed 4 births without one, and my sister 3 births, so there's a little part of me that says "if they can do it, so can I!" If I do end up having the baby here, I'm going to wait until St George's get their MLU finished and then have a look at both it and Mayday's birth centre a little closer to due date. So are you going to tell us which hospital you prefer?

Ajasec, thanks for the reassurance about the pains. I'm hoping mine is just some wind/bloating - I did read something about that somewhere, but not sure how long it lasts. Maybe we should put a post in for the "Due in July/August 2007" girls - they might be able to offer us some advice from experience on this matter. Hooray for MN!

bendybus · 16/01/2007 08:26

Mornin everyone,

Also getting pains in the abdomen, often when I stand up there is a sharp pain quite low down, I try not to worry about it - but it's not easy.

Had my first doctor appt last Thu (mainly paperwork) and she seemed to be saying that the only real danger was if the mother's core temperature rises. She said something about how we used to worry about straining as well, but gave the impression that it wasn't such a big deal these days. Is anyone being careful with lifting and twisting? I have to carry things at work sometimes and DS1 is quite a heavy fella! Perhaps I need to take to life on the sofa...!

Doc gave me a slip for an early scan if I feel like I would like one. I thought that was very good.

Flossam · 16/01/2007 11:26

Hi SheRa. I will probably go to the hospital I work at, mainly because we've had a few dodgy things happen to us in the other (local) NHS trust completely unrelated, but has knocked my faith! Its the Bristol Royal Infirmary. No odds distance wise. It's second time around for me and the midwife told me minutes after I had DS I'd be an ideal candidate for a home birth next time. Not what I wanted to hear at the time, but her words have stayed with me!

Bendy, that is really good about having the slip. YOur GP sounds fab. I think the thing about lifting etc is more to do with damaging ligaments which are loosening up due to the high levels of progesterone rather than risks of miscarrying? One of the reasons why it can help to tell people where I am. I too wonder about the lovely large lump that is my DS and am reluctant to lift him on more delicate days!

honey2theb · 16/01/2007 13:34

Hello!! I'm about 6 weeks now, and i keep getting feeling a lot of pressure at the top of my um bits, like just below my tummy. It sort of feels like im going to get AF but worse. Not painful though. Anyone else had this??? And i get pains like muscles pulling in my sides if i get up to quickly.
Hope everyone os feeling ok, not too sickly!

chicca · 16/01/2007 14:21

Just done my test. Can I join the club?!

Nettee · 16/01/2007 15:01

Hello Chicca, congratulations and welcome

I have booked my doctors appointment now, all feels a bit more official.

Ajasec · 16/01/2007 15:02

Hi everyone,
Thanks, Flossam, for the reassurance.
For anyone considering home births, both my girls were born at home, and it was great. Planning this one at home too. I can get incredibly boring raving about it, but if anyone wants to know anything about it, just give me a nudge.

JoniMitchell · 16/01/2007 15:20

Hi everyone,

I'm 4+6 and went to see the doc today to get 'into the system'. Now just have to wait for 12-wk scan date. That's gonna drag!!

I already have a LO who just turned two and I feel different already with this one. I have a very crampy feel (like a period). In fact, I was gobsmacked I was pg because I really thought I was just about to come on.

I also have bad bad wind. Nice! Poor old DH is suffering.

maretta · 16/01/2007 15:23

Hello all the new ones. Congratulations

I can be a home birth bore too. It was fab lying in our own bed with ds2 there between us.

Actually I was also told I was an ideal home birth candidate after having ds1 so I planned a home birth for ds2. In the end, it turned out ds2 was going to be born at home whether I liked it or not. He was born 50 minutes after I woke up and only 15 after my first proper contraction. Poor dh had to play midwife with a little help on the phone from the ambulance service. The ambulance turned up 5 minutes later and cut the cord.

I am planning a home birth again. I have been told that often a third birth is longer than a second but shorter than a first. Does anyone know anything about that?
