Hi new year, new thread!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MrsJ · 27/01/2007 11:57

hi everyone!
hope you don't mind me posting, feeling a bit bored and fed up today and no idea why! as of tomorrow I have two weeks to due date, but have a doppler scan wednesday so depending on that things may be different!

Just wondered if everyone has names picked etc?
Would you be put off a name if it seemed to be getting a bit popular?

MoosMa · 27/01/2007 12:01

I didn't use scissors or clippers on DD1 until she was a couple of months old, I used to nibble her nails. I could do one hand at a time will bf-ing her - whichever hand was pointing up!

snugglebunny · 27/01/2007 12:56

Thanks suzi2 and MoosMa! Have scratch mits packed in - but have also heard they dont tend to stay on long!! Petrified that I'll cut the LO's fingers, so really want some teeny ones - will have a look at Boots! Might try nibbling them off instead!

thelittlestboho · 27/01/2007 13:01

Mrs J, we've had name decided for ages now, helps that we know 100% what sex SHE is, lol. My youngest daughter, 12, is choosing her second name which was going to be Grace, but two other couples we know have opted for that so she went for the beautiful and obscure Echo, (after the mythological character NOT the repetition of sound, ) Not going to be to everyone's taste but in our family that counts for nothing anyway.

Fight the power, haha

MrsJ · 27/01/2007 13:20

LOL I like that... I have decided on a middle name... I think? lol I'm having a little girl too!
I have a pretty unusual surname, its Polish so guess I have to be a little bit careful can't have anything too adventurous as the poor girl will spend her life spelling her entire name out and teaching its pronounciation lol
I'm actually a Samantha myself so I've not always been the only one on my class and it didn't really do me any harm I guess... lol I'll just have to get thinking lol
Thanks! xx

Sallyallyally · 27/01/2007 14:46

Does anyone have the phone number of the housework fairy? Having trouble facing the amount of mess two people (DH and DD) have made in 24 hours and am after some mythical creature with a wand to help me out.

suis · 27/01/2007 14:50

Mrs J - There were 5 Susans in my year at secondary school, 3 of us in the same class. I have even met 3 people with the same first middle and surname. However, it wasn't any problem particularly, apart from one of the other Susans thought it was really funny to answer for me all the time which got a bit tedious.

We've nearly chosen names, but I refuse to make a final decision till I meet the person concerned. IME people often suddenly chose something they had never considered at all when they actually see the LO, so I'm not closing off any options. ALso DP has a surname that could have comedy interpretations depending on what you put in front of it, so we've been v careful about how things sound, how initals work etc. Best bit has been thinking up the names with most comedy potential, which also helps put off all the people who think they have a right to know what our preferred names are.

I did see a list of all first names given out in Scotland last year and amongst many many hilarious and unfortunate names, my favourite was a girl called Porphyria. I am presuming her parents don't know they have called her after a nasty blood disease.

suzi2 - Lots of sympathy for the rib pain, I had some of that a couple of days ago and it was very sore. My Mum reckons it's ribs being shoved together as the LO pushes up, although someone else suggested the LO might have got a foot or hand stuck between the bottom two ribs and would need teased back out. Whatever it was, it went after a couple of days thankfully.

MrsJ · 27/01/2007 15:00

Suis- same here as far as not making a concrete decision until you meet baby.
I had a friend who had her names chosen out (I helped can chose for other ppl but not me typical!) then when the baby was born I thought she looked more like her middle name mentioned that too my friend who replied me too! yet didn't call her it, this confused me a little but well her baby lol
But if I can do that when it isn'y my decision what will I be like when it is?? lol

I havent had any rib pain yet over the years my mum has often complained to me and how she suffered with me and that was my foot, apparently i thought her ribs were a comfy foot rest lol

MoosMa · 27/01/2007 16:40

Grrr, I woke up with a headache on Thursday and it hung around until this morning and faded away, now it's back with a vengeance Oh how I wish I could have some ibuprofen.....

CurrantBun · 27/01/2007 16:56

I'm getting a bit of achiness in the ribs on the right hand side from time to time, but nothing particularly uncomfortable. At my midwife appointment yesterday she said the baby is anterior, bum against my belly button (which I knew just by feeling - it's as hard as a rock!) and legs twowards my right, so the rib achiness is probably caused by the baby shoving its feet up under my rib cage. I really feel as though I'm running out of room in there - I'm literally all baby (a midwife's dream apparently as she could feel everything!) but I feel as though I can't possibly stretch much more!

We thought we had our names all sorted, but DH has now gone off the boys' name we both liked most. Which is a pain as we've both gone off numbers two and three in the shortlist. We are still OK (for the moment!) on girls' names.

Have had a really busy week. We have our antenatal class on Monday morning each week, then this week I also had a breastfeeding workshop in the afternoon. Which meant I had to rush from work, eat my lunch on the train and walk about 20 minutes from the station to the hospital at full pelt to make it on time! Because the workshop had been cancelled and rescheduled from the previous week it meant I had to move my pre-booked hair appointment to Wednesday after work - again a rush to get there on time! We had an active birth workshop at the hospital on Thursday night from 7-9pm - mad rush because of getting home from work, and we didn't end up having any dinner until nearly 10pm! The week ended with my midwife appointment yesterday at the highly inconvenient (in terms of getting into work afterwards) time of 11:45am. Had originally planned to go to work beforehand then back again afterwards, but in the end couldn't face the double commute. Problem is I'm never seen on time by the midwife - yesterday was kept waiting until 12:30pm and didn't get to work until 2pm. Am 36 weeks on Monday so not sure where I'm getting the energy to do all this dashing around but seem to be OK.

Have been getting a stitch-like pain occasionally in my lower right abdomen, not sure what it is but probably the baby pressing on something it shouldn't be pressing on. Still sleeping OK - I actually find it most comfortable to sleep on either side rolled towards my tummy so the side of my bump rests on the mattress. Have tried using pillows/cushions on a couple of occasions but just find they get in the way. Only needed one loo trip in the night last night and the night before but usually I have to get up twice.

Pretty much sotred as far as the baby's room is concerned - I don't think there's anything much we need now. I still need to get my hospital bag together though - and am panicking slightly as am not due to finish work until the end of week 37 and worried about not having anything with me if I happened to go into labour at work! Can't be lugging a full hospital bag back and forth every day but might prepare a 'capsule' version just in case!!

Bouncyminky · 27/01/2007 19:58

Hello all! I have been reading this thread for the last few weeks and finally got round to signing up and joining you as you all seem a really nice bunch who help each other no end. Certainly helped me not to feel so alone. It's been good to read about others having the same problems (KNUF, heartburn and squished bladder) and the same thoughts as me (my current favourites are When is it coming and how on earth will I cope with the sleep deprivation) so I thought I really should start contributing.

I'm 38+1 (due on 9th February) and started maternity leave a couple of weeks ago. It was good timing as I was starting to get quite tired. I do think having Christmas in between meant that I could go that little bit longer though.

Touch wood my pregnancy has been quite textbook to now apart from a question mark over the growth just before Christmas that turned out to be a false alarm and so I can prepare for the homebirth that I would ideally like - nice and calm hopefully!!

This is my first baby and so I will be probably surfing mumsnet in a lot of my spare time for hints and tips.

My sister in law and a friend have recently had babies and so I've been able to practice a little, although I always am concerned if I am doing everything properly with others babies - holding, rubbing... well everything!!

I do have one question for those of you who have done this before as the lady in M&S was rather useless the other day - nursing bras. At the moment I am a 36A and as there was no other choice I have had to buy a 36B as this is the smallest cup size - but they look huge on me. She did mutter that I should fill out when my milk comes in but not sure if this is true. Any pearls of wisdom? Should I go for another brand or will they definately grow bigger???? I don't want to wait until after the baby is born and have to go trawling around the shops again if I don't have to.

andyrobo237 · 27/01/2007 20:13

I am also awake really early, but don't even contemplate getting out of bed!! Did it one night last week - up at half four as couldn't get comfy and didn't want to wake DH so wnet to watch tv for half an hour, but felt rough al day - so will just lie there and pretend to be alseep!

Felt rought yesterday - belly pain and bad back ache - a warm bath didn;t really help - remembered I started like that in labour with dd - had preiod type pains and loads of BH - all subsided now - not ready for labour yet as only 36+ weeks - at MW appt on Thursday this young man is still breech and apparently has his back against mine - not the best positon ofr birth, but given I am having ac-secion it is all academic! Explains the back pains though!

Spent two hours at a kiddy party today - at least I was sitting down with the other mums, but got to do the same next week as well! Needed a lie down when got home for half an hour to recover and baby really hurting me - suspect it is the waistband of my trousers as it is round his head!!! Por thing - so have put PJ's on - so feel a bit more comfy.

suzi2 · 27/01/2007 20:30

Thanks for the suggestions about the ribs... it's definately not a baby body part as it'd my high up ribs that join my sternum that are the problem. It's feeling far more bruised today but less painful if that makes sense. So I'm assuming I've pulled something. DH is doing ll the DS manouvering around and I think that's helping.

Currantbun - I thought you had gone into labour lol. It's odd to not see you on here for a few days!

Welcome bouncy - another homebirther eh? There are quite a few of us on here now. I do hope we all get our homebirths! I had very little experience of babies before DS was born and worried about how I did everything with other peoples babies. But it's easier with your own. I rememeber passing DS to DH about an hour after he was born and we were like "left a bit, right a bit, you put your hand there" sort of thing. Within 12 hours we were flinging him about all over the place without concern .

When your milk comes in you are likely to go up a cup size or two. And also breastpads, if you need them, take up a little room. So your bra might be just fine. I went up several sizes and struggled to get a good fit when I was breastfeeding so would advise not to spend too much or buy too many until you know what you're dealing with! What size did you wear pre pregancny? The reason I ask is that often your back size goes up in pregnancy, so if you were a 34 before being pg, you should go back to a 34 afterwards. That way you could buy a bigger cup size too. The other option would be to go for a very soft "multiple sizes" nursing bra such as a bravado one. I bought one that arrived today and it's great. I struggle size wise as they don't quite go up to the cup size I need, but it still stretches enough! One of the ladies on here sells them on her website: www.snugglebumnappies.co.uk
her prices are REALLY good and delivery is free and prompt.

Alocin · 27/01/2007 20:58

Ideally I'd like a homebirth, but have been put off by dh's worries, and mw's attitude (you'll only get gas and air, no pethidine). Also worry about the posterior thing as think its also inevitable that however much I dislike the idea of an epidural, if lo hasnt shifted to anterior, I'll probably be screaming for one! Do think its barbaric that dh would be kicked out of hospital within 2 hours of birth if it happened post 9pm, really would like to spend first night together as a family. Is that normal procedure, and I'm being naive?

sorkycake · 27/01/2007 21:04

Alocin, if I can do it on gas/air, then anyone can!
You can use active movement and being on all fours to turn a posterior bub in labour, like I did. His head was HUGE and he weighed 8.8lbs, and I'm pretty petite. Dh still says he has no idea how I did it given how big his head was LOL. I ran out of gas/air towards the end of the first stage as well, so managed just breathing and being in the water for the 2nd and 3rd. It is wonderful that first night when you have a shower and all climb into bed together, watching your baby fall asleep next to your Dh and waking up together the next day.
Good grief I'm making myself cry, what's wrong with me.

leahsmum · 27/01/2007 21:23

What a chatty lot today! Seemed to take me ages to read through the thread from today!

Sorkycake as much as I wish I was acutally due on 7 Feb I'm due on 14th. Thanks x
Sallyallyally - if you find the housework fairy please send her/him to me next - just dont seem to be getting the nesting instinct - can def see me here for another good few weeks yet.
Welcome bouncyminky! Dont worry about it - my dd is almost 3 and I have experience with children as I come from a big family of lots and lots of cousins with children and I still feel nervous with other peoples babies - I think its cos you are subconsciously worried that they are watching you when in fact they are probably not. When your own LO arrives it will be the most natural thing and as Suzi2 said earlier you will be throwing him/her about within a matter of hours and be laughing at what you were worried about.

I have a childrens birthday party 2morrow 2 and am looking forward to it in a way 9dd will love it bouncy castle followed by a magician) but not really sure if i can handle a room full of 30 odd 3 and 4 year olds! It's a friends 4 years old sons party so I really feel that I need to stay and help her out (not that I'l be much use at 8 and a bit months pregnant - oh how i love to say that!).

leahsmum · 27/01/2007 21:28

everyone seems to have their births well though out. When I mentioned to my mw at my 35 week anc about preparing a birthplan she fobbed me off as if it not important - I am def going in this week and not leaving till mine is done.
According to my notes babys position is cephalic long - I assume this is the normal position for labour/birth as she hasnt mentioned otherwise? Anyone shed any light? I cant remember what my notes usually said when i was preg with dd as i never felt the need to go over them too often as then mw was a lot better and explained everything to me at anc.

Oh I really am ranting on a bit tonight!!

MrsJ · 27/01/2007 21:53

Hi Bouncymink you're just a couple of days ahead of me. I too considered a home birth partly, well mostly as I don't like the idea of having to stay in hospital especially without DH. There is a possibility though that at the hospital i'm going too we could all stay together depending on a midwife being available and all going well.

They are a little concerned about my babies size but MW says shes felt smaller babies. I don't have a terribly big bump though, (Was in boots yeaterday buying baby things etc and was asked by an assistant who was sat looking straight at me how old my baby was, had to advise the baby was due in another two weeks- is this good or bad?? bad I guess )

MoosMa · 27/01/2007 22:18

Welcome along Bouncyminky, I'm normally a 34A (pre-pg) and am a strange size now, my ribs are huge but boobs have hardly grown. While pg with DD I went up to 34C and had C nursing bras. The lady in M&S is right you will get enormous when your milk comes in but you should settle down again after a few days/weeks. But as suzi2 says your back size may shrink a bit too so you may be able to get a 34B perhaps. I got a couple of crop top style ones from Mothercare that are designed for night time use but were also great in the day when I was huge as they're so comfy and adjustable. They're sold on back size rather than cup size and are so stretchy you could fit anything in there!

Alocin, I would say if you're not confident about a homebirth then maybe it's best to go to hospital for your first, fear can make things so much worse and you may end up needing intervention especially if it's still OP. My rule for this birth is that (presuming I don't need to be induced again) I'll wait until I get to the point where I would be going to hospital and if it's still OP I will go in, if not I will stay at home. Oh, and I think it's very mean of them to kick DHs out after 2 hours, why do they do that?

mummy2jake · 27/01/2007 22:47

hi everyone just got round to posting birth story on birth announcement thread will pop on here tomorrow to see how your all doing.

SHHHH · 27/01/2007 23:07

hi all, not posted for agessssss......... mainly as busy with dd (19 months) and my mn time was dd;s nap time which is also now my nap time .

Well I am due 31/01 but on this thread as no doubt ds2b will be late so would rather be one of the 1st to pop than the last iykwim but the way feel atm I will still be waiting to pop in 2 months time.!! Everyine keeps asking if baby has arrived yet..grrrrrrrrrrrrr....hormonal and lack of patience makes me want to snap at them..

Can't believe some have arrived already...doing all I can to shift the lo.! DH now finshed his contract for around 6 weeks so he will be a great help with dd as I have 0 energy.

Hope everyone is doing ok. Hi sorkycake, didn't realise you were also on this thread.

suis · 28/01/2007 00:24

Hi Bouncy - just a couple of days ahead of me too. Don't worry on the sleep deprivation thing. I've been dealing with it for months now and TBH, you get used to it. Although this is my first LO I have severe restless leg syndrome which leaves me unable to even sit down, much less lie down or sleep, for hours at a time during the night. I haven't slept for longer than 2.5 hours at a go in months. I think I must be the only one here looking forward to the sleep deprivation of a newborn. At least then (assuming the RLS does go after the birth)I will be able to sleep if I get a chance, rather than having lots of opportunity to sleep, but not the ability to do it, which is gently driving me nuts.

On that point.... I am a bit nervous in case my RLS does not go back to it's usual "once in a while" level after I have the LO. If I am still night pacing I don't know how I am going to manage breastfeeding. As things are just now, I simply cant sit still for long enough. My only thought to get round this is to use a sling. Does anyone have any recommmendations for baby slings that could be used to BF while standing / walking about ???

suis · 28/01/2007 00:27

Oh and on the worrying about handling other people's babies... I reckon it's like borrowing cars, before I had my own I used to borrow other peoples and I was always terrified I would bump it, or get it stolen or get done for speeding in it or something, although I never did any of these. Now I have my own car I have done most of these, but never been worried by it for a moment. I am working on the idea that babies are the same.

suzi2 · 28/01/2007 11:39

Suis - I believe that the easiest sling to bf in is a ring sling style one. I have one but have never bf in it - going to attempt it this time around but not sure my physical makeup is quite right for it - boobs too low! I have an ellaroo lightly padded one and think it's great. Got it in the sale so not sure I would have paid full price for it. If you're a bit handy with sewing they're really easy to make. Also, I see a few come up on the mn for sale threads so maybe look there.

snugglebumnappies · 28/01/2007 11:48

suis, agree with Suzi2 on the sling, a wraparound/ring baby wearing type sling would be goos for this. seen aome lovely ones her {http://www.sybela.com\slings}
