This one seems to be the winner, and I can't seem to come up with anything more inventive, sorry!

Hello - god it's eons since I've posted on here, can't keep up. Due Sat but no twinges as yet.

Lizzzombie re: inductions - I was induced with my first and I will do anything this time to avoid it. Inductions are more likely (but not always) likely to lead to more medical intervention (was certainly the case with me).

Good luck to everyone.

Galmum · 10/01/2007 11:01

Hi Lizz,

I'm sure you get loads of answers on this! I don't want to scare you if you have to be induced, but this is my small experience of it. I do know of people where induction worked well and hopefully they'll post to give you a balanced answer.

I was n't induced, but I had a syntocin drip put up when I was about 8cm dliated as they wanted to speed up labour. They use syntocin to induce labour, if the other methods don't work. My experience was that after the drip started.

  • contractions were relentless, much stronger and I went from being able to handle the pain to being totally out of control in mind numbing pain (sorry). I was so stressed out.
  • I had to be on a constant monitor because of the syntocin and I got stuck on the bed on my back, which made it worse.
  • Probably because of the intensity of the contractions and me not handling the pain well - ds became distressed and he had to have the fetal monitor - up your fanjo and into their scalp. Really could n't move as all the readings went crazy if I did.
  • Pushed ds out just as they were coming at me with the ventouse!

My great friend who has been induced twice at 14 days overdue would not recommend unless necessary and both times she hung on as long as possible without an epidural but needed one. She always says now that she would have gone for the epidural earlier as the syntocin makes the contractions unnaturally strong.

I know it sounds annoying but some babies take longer to cook - I would n't opt for it unless medically necessary. My consultant does n't want to induce before my due date + a few days at the earliest - he explained how induced labours feature more intervention, more ventouse & forcep deliveries and more cs. Induction has been discussed in my case because the baby is a bit of a whopper! I am much more nervous about being potentially being induced than delivering a big baby spontaneously.

vinorouge · 10/01/2007 11:25

That was really interesting and helpful re inductions. I am so fed up waiting have been willing induction to be allowed but now am in 2 minds about it as hadn't realised it meant intervention more likely. I am worrying about how much the baby grows for every day its overdue. Maybe I shouldn't be getting so worried about that bit. The size of mine was estimated at 6lb 9oz when I had it turned at 38 weeks, am now 40+3, anyone got any ideas how much is it likely to have grown ? I have also been told I'm likely to have a male shaped pelvis cos of my build but not really sure what that might mean ???

Galmum · 10/01/2007 11:42

No idea what a male shaped pelvis is?!!

Maybe worth posting on childbirth bit, as someone may have some insight. There are estimates of growth rates at the end of pregnancy, but I'm not looking them up as I don't want to know how big this bubba could grow!! I'm working on the assumption that baby had an early growth spurt and that weight was over estimated at the growth scan.

Estimated 8lbs at 34+4 weeks!!!

wilkie50 · 10/01/2007 11:48

Just got back from MW - Bubs is fully engaged! I know it doesn't mean I am going to pop imminently but still excited She estimated about 7 1/2 - 8 lbs.

Hattie - fingers hurting are due to fluid retention and nothing to worry about, just annoying.

Anyone heard anything from Shimmer?

Hattie2 · 10/01/2007 12:18

Thanks wilkie - wasn't expecting a miracle cure for the sausage fingers (but would have been nice!).

BlueyDragon · 10/01/2007 12:23

I'm not even overdue (due today!) and I'm clock/knicker/kick/slightest cramp watching like mad. No sign, and at least 3 different opinions of how engaged this bub. Patience not one of my virtues! Good luck everyone...

Dragonhart · 10/01/2007 12:36

Hi everyone. Not had time to catch up with everyone (there have been 480+ messages since I last logged on!!) so hope all is ok and congratulations to anyone who has had their baby.

Ruth arrived at 2.52pm on fri 5th Jan by cs.

She is doing really well and I am at home now and loving having her there.

Good Luck to everyone else, hope all goes well. Will catch up soon xxx

vinorouge · 10/01/2007 12:54

How exciting for head to be fully engaged wilkie! Bet that made the walk to the surgery worth it.

RGee · 10/01/2007 13:03

Many congrats Dragonhart!! Was beginning to wonder when the next one was going to pop!!

Fully engaged is v good news Wilkie, and fingers crossed for you soon Jodie.
Lizz - we were due around the same time, so I'm hoping you're not hanging on too long now. Pippa is feeding like a trojan, but bless her, I actually had 5 hours solid sleep last night. Yup - 5 HOURS, then she allowed me a further 3!!! I feel so refreshed today. It must mean a nightmare night to come....

wilkie50 · 10/01/2007 13:38

Vinorouge - walk to surgery was really nice actually, apart from having to stop and catch my breath every 50 yards (think passers by thought I was about to drop!!). Meant to add re our pudding discussions - Asda Jam Roly Poly is surprisingly nice but them I like anything stodgy with custard

Dragonheart - congratulations!! You lucky thing. How big was she?

Hope no one minds - have updated list 11 born, 61 to go (according to list - surely not?!?!?!) :

Huge congratulations to Dragonhart!

I can't believe how many ladies are due about now - there is going to be a baby fest!!

Loubie37 · 10/01/2007 13:58

Yikes I'm way down the list (EDD 20/1) However, sorry about this but I'll be queue jumping as I'm being induced tomorrow

Will post my birth announcement asap but I've been warned it could take anywhere from a couple of hours to 2-3 days....

All the best to everyone else and congrats to all those with new arrivals

Loubie xx

Galmum · 10/01/2007 14:03

Hope it all goes well Loubie37. Thinking of you.

Visualize that baby out, have a shag tonight, eat lots of pineapple and twiddle your nips, just to help it all along!!

annieapple7 · 10/01/2007 14:06

Congratulations Dragonhart - do post a pic ! How exciting for you to be fully enegaged Wilkie - that mean you will go soon, surely? And good luck Loubie - will be thinking of you tomorrow?

Has anyone been using almond oil to massage themselves down there to help the baby's head come out more easily? I haven't started yet (it makes me feel sick, TBH) but i did on the last 2 and didn't tear.

JodieG1 · 10/01/2007 14:07

Congrats Dragonheart!

I'm due on Sunday and have a check up tomorrow, not many more I hope. Come on baby!

Good luck Loubie, hope all goes well.

Hattie2 · 10/01/2007 14:29

Congrats dragonhart!

Annieapple - I would massage but I can't reach over this enormous bump

looshkin · 10/01/2007 14:59

well done dragonH, was wondering what had happened to you.

Well still clinging on my end now 40+7 seeing consultant end of week but hoping to avoid induction next week if poss but not sure how as have literally tried everything. Lots of period type pains but nothing else, the head is only just enagaged and not descended into my pelvis in any meaningful way grrrrrr.

Good luck to those being induced/cs next few days look forward to the announcements, off to sulk and eat more shortbread ...

loosh

ellieandhattie · 10/01/2007 15:03

Congrats DH was thinking about you on friday when I was having my section!

TRhino Ellie is 2.4 and we keep saying that we must take her back to her bed but always so tired and can't be bothered, am sure it'll sort itself out eventually and doesnt actually bother me that much, just hoping that Hattie doesnt follow as there won't be enough room for me also I really really don't want any more babies so until DH sorts out his end of the deal ()its a fantastic contraception he he!!!

laughalot · 10/01/2007 15:16

Well im here and so is my due date but baby isnt here. Iv got a sweep tomorrow so we shall see how that goes and iv also got to discuss about being induced as my dh starts his new job and cant get time off please send vibes that she arrives before the 22 jan. Congrats to everyone who has popped there are some lovely names about. Well iv had sex the last three nights and that has done bugger all so iv been to tescos today and purchased a pineapple however that did bugger all with my ds. Good luck loubie xxx

2Happy · 10/01/2007 15:36

congratulations DH! Another lovely name too.
And RGee - 8 hours sleep in total? Now I knew things can't be as bad with baby as with pg insomnia, lol!
Wilkie - fully engaged? Nooooooo! You're supposed to be due at the same time as me, you can't go first

Induction - here's my tuppenceworth, but feel free to ignore! I think it's less bad to be induced if you've already had a baby, your body already knows what to do, and it's more likely to go ok. There's also a difference between being just started off (with cream up your fanjo) than being augmented (with synto drip). The cream to start you off is, I believe, uncomfy, but you hopefully then go into 'normal' labour and that's that. Synto is not normal labour, as galmum said, the contractions are very strong indeed and very painful so you either get knackered and end up with ventouse/forceps or you end up with epidural, which means you're lying down and can't feel to push as well (though they can turn ep down for pushing) so more likely to end up with ventouse/forceps. So if (when ) I go over, I won't be too militant about avoiding cream to start me off, but I would definitely rather avoid synto if poss. (dh says he can do the prostaglandin to start me off, but in cows they give it iv not up your fanjo, I told him to take a running jump. I do draw the line somewhere!)

Just back from mw - she reckons I'm smaller than with ds. Totally unscientific, and at odds with the ultrasound findings, but I'm going to believe her because it makes me happy .

wilkie50 · 10/01/2007 15:43

Annieapple - I started massaging with almond oil at 33 weeks - it gave me horrendous thrush which I have only just shifted (but then my lady is a delicate little flower). MW suggested massaging with KY Jelly instead which I know doesn't give me thrush but TBH I cannot be bothered fiddling about down there doing that (unless it ends up with a big 'O' iykwim)
