Just be careful of changing on the bed, especially if you have a boy. They have a tendency to wee EVERYWHERE as soon as you take their nappy off. You don't want to have to change all your sheets in the middle of the night speaks from experience

bikingintherain · 27/02/2016 21:24

I'm not sure this really answers any questions that we're asked but stil....

Once I was changing DD nappy and she did a poo mid change, it travelled over a metre, all over the carpet, entirely missing the changing mat she was lying on.

I'm going down the chemical route - Baby wipes and disposables here. For a start, it's too expensive an outlay for what is definately our last child plus I seem to be in a never ending washing cycle as it is, never mind adding nappies/wipes to the mix.

24 weeks today, so baby is viable - that was a milestone I wanted to reach. Unfortunately my father in law died suddenly earlier this week so we're having a fairly crappy time atm, lots of emotions. DH had his birthday a couple of days later which was just so sad.

Woke up yesterday full of the cold as well, so I'm not feeling my best. Mattress arrived from babies r us, haven't opened it yet as my FIL bought it, it's just too soon.

jellybelly85 · 28/02/2016 09:32

I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL divergent Sad its always difficult to lose people we are close to. Hope there is lots of support around over the coming weeks.

Those with chicco next-to-me: is the mattress really too hard? Are you all getting a different one? #cluelessfirsttimemum

emma85x · 28/02/2016 09:38

divergent so sorry to hear about your FIL. What a sad time. So sorry to hear that. You poor thing. What sad sad news, thinking of you and your DH.

emma85x · 28/02/2016 09:39

On a completely separate note, I'm with divergent on the disposable route. Couldn't bear the mess of it all!

LouLou030783 · 28/02/2016 10:08

Divergent sorry to hear bout ur FIL. Hope ur all ok

I'm with emma and divergent I'm going down the disposable route

bikingintherain · 28/02/2016 11:52

I'm sorry to hear about your FIL divergent. It must be a really difficult time.

Torfhinn · 28/02/2016 14:27

Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time divergent Flowers

MindfulBear · 28/02/2016 15:11

Sorry to hear your news Divergent.

We are in a sorry state with DH's granny. She just had her 96th bday but is fast going downhill physically but is all there mentally. V sad. The family keep saying she only has weeks but I'm not so sure.
It's all a bit surreal tbh.

MindfulBear · 28/02/2016 15:14

Re nappy changing - the only reason to have a changing station (whether on a special changing station or on top of an existing chest of drawers) is if you have a bad back or might have one at the end of this pregnancy or in the early new born days.

Tbh we only used the changing station until T was 5mo because he started to twist and turn and one day fell off - despite me being right next to him!!!

I would caution against using beds and sofas ..... Poo and wee goes EVERYWHERE!!!!!!! The floor is safest and with #2 im going to start on top of the chest of drawers but graduate to the floor - hoping my back will cope.

I second the great suggestion to have a changing mat on every floor of your house. Is a life saver. For those with washable nappies you can either have a bucket on every floor or keep a wet bag by one change mat and take it to the bucket once a day or so.

MindfulBear · 28/02/2016 15:19

On the subject of washable nappies - we used them for #1 and will def use them again. Great investment for one child but even better for more. Saves a fortune over the 2-3 years a kid is in nappies.
There is another load or 2 or 3 of washing every week but it isn't that bad at all. Especially if your partner pulls their weight. Just make sure you choose nappies of similar colours and use them with washing in mind. I never washed my white / cream ones with my coloured ones for example. This meant there was a usage order that had to be followed - took a while to get into a routine but we did it.
I returned to work when DS was 10mo and we continued to use washables until he potty trained himself at 2 1/2yo.

We used Naty disposables when travelling tho. Just makes life easier.

We love cheeky wipes. So much nicer than wet wipes. Gets so much more off the skin too. I used them on my face as well!!!

strawberrypenguin · 28/02/2016 16:54

Definitely disposables here for nappies and wipes. I couldn't cope with the extra washing! There's already going to be an extra persons worth of clothes to contend with I really don't want to add nappies to that too!
Flowers and Brew divergent hope things start to seem easier soon. It must have been hard getting the mattress through.

MollieRos · 28/02/2016 16:59

Really sorry to hear that divergent it sounds like a really difficult time for you and your OH at the moment. Flowers

Thank you for all the advice on washable nappies and wipes- it's really useful! And thanks for the warnings jbiscuits and biking I shall bear that in mind Grin

iamdivergent · 28/02/2016 18:30

Thanks everyone. Discussions now centering on baby boys name - we had been decided but I have a feeling DH would like to honour his df. We have another 16ish weeks to go though so I'm sure we will come to an agreement sometime soon.

Hope everyone is well.

Belleboo23 · 28/02/2016 18:31

So sorry to hear your news divergent Flowers

We will be using disposable nappies like I did with the other two, have looked at those Water wipes which sound good I always used huggies with shea butter for my dd who is eczema prone and was fine but if people can recommend those I think that's what I'll go for?

Jellybelly im ordering a new mattress for the chicco will probably get it done tonight if I can stay awake past the kids going bed!! It is very firm reminds me of the ones in a travel cot. Ive just read alot of reviews saying about babies not settling on it which is how we got ours! The replacement ones from chicco are £40 but I've found them for 35 with delivery from a baby mattress website which includes a 4cm foam mattress, waterproof cover and deluxe quilted mattress protector, there's loads of options tho

nehagarg · 28/02/2016 18:40

Oh no divergent. So sorry about your FIL. Hope you have lots of support around

jellybelly, the chicco mattress is quite hard. Though we prefer a hard one for the baby so we are going to give it a try. If the baby doesnt take to it at all then we plan to stick the sleepyhead inside chicco and that should do the trick.

So sorry to hear about your FIL divergent.

laughingGnomette · 28/02/2016 19:15

iam - so sorry about FL. We had a boys name picked out that we both loved (and nearly used with DS) but a friend just went and used it for her DS so I feel a bit awkward using it now. Back to the drawing board!!

I hated the amount of rubbish we created with disposables last time and our bin only gets taken once a fortnight so I'm going to try reusables or at least a mixture this time.

Does anyone else have a painful bump? Every evening the top of my bump by my right rib feels bruised. I'm wearing maternity bras and taking them off in the evening but it's still sore :(

MollieRos · 28/02/2016 19:33

laughing the top of my bump by my right rib also feels kind of bruised and uncomfy a lot of the time. The skin there feels almost oversensitive to my clothes being on it too. Probably just that the baby's had his feet stuck up there for a while now!

I've been getting lots of braxton hicks still. They started getting more frequent a few days ago and I'm averaging about 6-10 an hour. Some days they feel pretty much constant, and seem to be getting stronger- they can be really uncomfortable, I suppose as a result of my bump getting bigger so the muscle contractions are more noticeable. I can't decide if it's worth ringing the midwife about? I'm always worried about wasting their time.

Violet88 · 28/02/2016 19:49

The top of my bump is sore too, its kind of a band across where the bottom of my bra sits, it feels very itchy but there is hardly any rash, I've been trying doublebase moisturiser on it but it only calms it for about half an hour. Glad someone else has the same thing. I think the skin is very delicate there, so hurts when it gets stretched!

strawberrypenguin · 28/02/2016 19:51

Not so much uncomfortable bump as uncomfortable ribs for me, especially on my left side - suspect it's something to do sleeping on that side all the time now.
Starting to feel a little bit beached whale now, finding it an effort to bend over/ haul myself off the sofa and I'm only 26 weeks! Definitely feeling more tired this time too.

Eastend2015 · 28/02/2016 19:51

Hi all, so sorry to hear your news Divergent and Mindful.

We have had my bro and SIL to stay this weekend with my 7 year old niece and 4 year old nephew. Suffice to say, it has dawned on us that a baby may be the easy bit. Enjoying putting our feet up this evening!!

laughingGnomette · 28/02/2016 20:11

Ah thanks ladies, it does sound very similar. Baby tends to hang out over that way a lot and the bump does feel firmer and more stretched. Will definitely try moisturising there more.
