We had a hired bed nest last time, and I am totally doing that again. No getting out of bed for night wakings!
It only lasted 4 months, but DS was 10lbs, and pretty athletic- he figured out how to pull at the sides at 4 months, so we bought an emergency small cot, which he sleep in with the side down, pushed next the big bed, until 18 months, when he went into a cotbed in his own room.
You can tilt the bednest, and use it as a travel cot if you want to. It was much easier in the night than the cot with the side down, and I'm so glad we had it for the first, lots of wakings months.

MadrigalElectromotive · 05/02/2016 21:35

So exciting that you've got your cot already Snowflake! We're going to get the Chicvo next to me and the sleepyhead. Hopefully the baby will sleep! Hmm

DH was able to feel kicks for the first time this week (am 23+4 today), which was lovely. Getting some quite strong ones at times now, despite an anterior placenta.

MollieRos · 05/02/2016 21:43

Hmm, ideally we need something that he can stay in until 6 months- there's no way a big cot bed would fit in our room We'd sort of thought we'd get a cot bed which would last from 6 months up to toddlerhood in the baby's room, but that won't fit in our room. I think I need to have a look at different options in real life to see how big they are.

But it'd be great to have something light/small I can easily bring downstairs for napping, like a moses basket.

Have people had experience with bed nest/next to me/snuzpods in terms of whether they last up to 6 months? I'm being lured in by the thought of the sides being down so I don't have to get upright and can just scoop him across to me, but is this really needed? Aargh, all these decisions that don't actually matter, but seem like a big deal right now!

mrsmugoo · 05/02/2016 21:56

My issue with co-sleepers is that past about 4/5 months babies tend to roll over to their chosen comfy position which I can't see there being space for. Also, personally I started to encourage self settling and more independent sleep at that age and I don't think a co- sleeper is the best thing for independent sleep.

Amazing for newborns but a very short shelf life!

GrubbyWindows · 05/02/2016 22:23

Yes, the shelf life is definitely fairly short! But just rolling over is bliss. Better than even lifting over a lowered side a few inches high, because you are not lifting at all! If you've a big bed and blankets rather than duvet you are as well actually cosleeping- although with the bednest I liked being able to put the side up for the odd daytime nap, when I didn't want to be in the bed myself (not very often then...).
I know people who have used them to 6 months or a tad more, but you can get small cots that will last much longer (ours which lasted to 18 months is pretty small- although DS was pretty hemmed in by the end, we had planned to move him far earlier, but had failed to transform the study/dumping ground into a room for him...).
There are some good online tutorials for turning the cheapest IKEA cot into a cosleeper with a much longer shelf life, if that appeals.

Belvedere · 05/02/2016 22:29

We've bought a Chicco next to me and it's really big, will definitely last 6 months.
It felt like an extravagant purchase but they really keep there value so I reckon you could sell it on at not much of a loss afterwards.

Thats a very informative article Eastend. No one's explained it quite like that.

Very jealous of all of you with chicco next to me's or buying them! DH's family have a family crib so for sentimental reasons we'll be using that. snowflake love yours also. Very cute!

MollieRos · 06/02/2016 09:34

emma we're also being passed down a cot from my DH's parents, but our room is so small we need to find something else for the baby to sleep in for the first 6 months. I don't know if we'll end up with one of these fancy things, but it would be lovely!

emma85x · 06/02/2016 11:00

Arghhhh. Weighed myself. Big mistake. Huge mistake. Slimming world here I come! I am already very overweight so really should not be gaining this much. (12lbs) Big ooooops.

jellybelly85 · 06/02/2016 12:16

Oh Emma please try not to worry (easier said that done I know). Why not try and make a few healthy changes? Make sure you have fresh fruit in the house for snacking, and try to increase the exercise you do (going for a daily walk while listening to a podcast maybe?) or try a new exercise class? We've still got 4 months left - small changes can really help!

JellyBaby26 · 06/02/2016 13:24

Emma 12lbs really isn't that bad. I had put more on than that last time. Just try to tell yourself you don't need to eat for two and try to make healthy choices.

I put on a lot last time and managed to get it all off on the 5:2 diet once I'd stopped expressing and just in time to get upduffed again!

This time I have gained 8lbs so not far off your 12!

JellyBaby26 · 06/02/2016 13:25

Next to me is going strong at nearly 9 months here! Although she had her first night in her own room last night Sad

emma85x · 06/02/2016 13:55

jellybelly Thank you so much. I really appreciate those words of wisdom. I'm determined to try to maintain as much as possible and if I'm being completely honest I have been a bit naughty with sweetie! Bought a load of fresh fruit this morning and off for a walk now with some grapes!! Feeling motivated. Thanks jellybelly.

How did your dd get on last night? How did you feel about it? xx

emma85x · 06/02/2016 13:59

Sorry. I got confused with the 2 jellies!! 😀

mrsmugoo · 06/02/2016 14:20

Jellybaby I'm a 5:2 enthusiast too! I'll be 5:2ing as soon as possible!!

Torfhinn · 06/02/2016 14:41

mollie, I'd definitely recommend going to look round a big mothercare or John lewis and see cribs/cots /baskets in real life. .. along with your tape measure! It's hard to grasp what they are like until you see them. I was going to get a wooden crib (smaller than a cot) but found they looked a bit narrow which is what would limit their life, rather than length. I can see the next to me last 6 months due to its width. I'm not really in to the whole co-sleeping thing so may put the side up after a couple of months.

dolly, the outfit is from boots miniclub range. Definitely worth a look, they had a nice range of unisex (yellow/white/mint green) newborn stuff which, I'm surprised to find, is pretty hard to find anywhere!

Belleboo23 · 06/02/2016 15:01

Have just been catching up from yesterday! Scan went great all ok and definitely a girl so was nice to have it confirmed after our 3d scan the other week :)

Cant remember who asked but that co sleeper cot has gone off the john lewis website but its sold on others its called the babydan karla side by side crib if you google it, cant figure out how to do the link. I sat for ages last night looking at them all and completely got in fluster over it! Not sure if that one is a little narrow maybe its similar to a crib size as getting the tape measure out it wasnt as big as it appears. Also spotted the anna dropside cot costs around 120 which is a full size cot but with mattress at the highest setting it would be level with my bed and with the side dropped it will provide a sort of barrier next to my bed. Mother in law has offered to buy a cot whenever we are ready just worried baby will be lost in it!! Help really not sure what to go for haha!!

MollieRos · 06/02/2016 15:32

Congratulations on the scan Belleboo Smile

I'm sure I don't need to be doing all this agonising over what the baby will sleep in (chances are he'll refuse to be put down at all or just refuse to sleep in whatever we buy him!). I wish there were less options so there was less decision making! Torfhinn we're definitely going to have to do that ad have a trip to mothercare- I have zero experience with baby stuff so I'm finding it very hard to visualise what things are really like- pictures on the internet don't really give you a very good idea!

JellyBaby26 · 06/02/2016 17:47

I wanted to cry! It's really sad that she's not with us! In sure she will sleep in our room again though if she has a bad night or her medicine isn't working.

She was so good and slept from 9.30 - 6 ish.

laughingGnomette · 06/02/2016 18:03

*belle" - yay! Congratulations on the scan :)
mollie - just go with the flow, every baby is different, some are high needs, others aren't. We had to completely change our plans with DS as he HATED his basket. We co-slept for about six weeks then found he was happiest in a travel cot by the side of our bed as he was a starfish and loved his space.
Jellybaby - aww, it's tough when they move out isn't it?

Billi77 · 06/02/2016 21:53

Had scan yesterday and was all looking very good. Such a relief. Im not sure if it's because of a MMC earlier this year, but I am not a scan fan. That said, I was a huge scan fan upon finding out everything ok. And much to my admitted surprise, she's a girl. Had been convinced I was was carrying a boy. Unless he was giving himself a little mangina. Either way, am floating with joy that there is life within me. And here is a scan pic

[Pic removed by MNHQ at poster's request]

Congratulations billi it must be such a relief. Not sure if you noticed but your photo has all your details on so you might want to report it and then post a cropped version.
