DD1 was a bottle refuser now she has a tommee tippee. Someone recommended me MAM bottles for mix feeding (bottle+breast). What are the opinions.

I hired my doula today. Still not feeling remotely positive about the birth process tbh.

Coldest · 30/01/2016 23:34

That swing looks great. Thanks for the recommendation

BiffleRoo · 31/01/2016 07:15

Can also recommend mam bottles. Started with TT but DS wasn't taking to them when I was bfeeding so switched to mam and not looked back. The self sterilisation is a god send.

Slings and swings are the way forward when it comes to getting anything done, especially cooking and eating!!

Potkettleblack2 · 31/01/2016 08:40

I ended up using Nuk bottles as they were all DS would take-so I would recommend only buying 1 bottle now rather than potentially wasting money buying loads and then having to buy another type after! That's the mistake I made first time! We also used the TT microwave steraliser (even for Nuk bottles) and found it great. I loved how it didn't take up lots of space in our small kitchen!

Potkettleblack2 · 31/01/2016 08:42

Coldest-I think it might depend on your nipples! I was recommended Nuk by the lactation consultant at the hospital and I later found out it was because I have flat nipples (apparently-I didn't know this before!). So maybe MAM are begs for non-flat ones!

Potkettleblack2 · 31/01/2016 08:43
  • best not begs

My dd managed to take breast and bottle we used the tommee tippee closer to nature bottles. I've recently got the starter set and breast pump which is also the one I used before. It's mainly so dh can do the odd night feed. Didn't know there are now self sterilising bottles!!

emma85x · 31/01/2016 10:04

Thanks for all the info on Mam bottles. We also have a small kitchen so they look perfect. As you may have worked out by now I'm a bit of a bargain hunter!! I've found the following link. You simply put in your details and then go to their stand and the baby show to collect your free mam bottle! Result!! Got to love a bargain!! community.mambaby.co.uk/promotion/excelbabyshow2016

Anyone else planning on using glass bottles? This is my first so no clue what I am doing obviously. Thanks for the info on bottles and teats. Will definitely follow advice and only buy one and see if the baby takes to it. Wont need too many bottles though. If all goes well I plan to bf and express so DH can take turns.

Sorry Jelly will stick around here because I am not on Facebook. Hopefully if more people are staying we can build a must haves list here too?

What's the benefit of using glass?

DS was a bottle refuser, he was EBF but I never got him to take a single bottle of expressed milk, ever. I've got loads of different bottles that I tried and gave up on!

Belleboo23 · 31/01/2016 10:42

I think it's luck or maybe depends on the baby if you can successfully do both, I often found when I missed a night feed and dh got up and used what I had expressed I couldn't sleep anyway because my boobs were so full and uncomfortable due to the missed feed! My dd had problems with low blood sugar when she was born so hospital got me to feed her then she was topped up with a small bottle of formula, they wouldn't discharge us until her levels were back up so I put that she would accept either down to that

laughingGnomette · 31/01/2016 11:13

emma - great link! Thanks!

I think the breakage risk is enough to put me off glass. It's ok if it's just you and a newborn but throw another child into the mix and wait until your baby is around nine months and having broken glass everywhere would be too much of a worry for me.

The only bottles that DS would take we're Playtex latex ones from America (nightmare) but theyre now discontinued so I'm hoping this baby will be less picky!!

laughingGnomette · 31/01/2016 11:14

Sorry! link for plastic v glass

mrsmugoo · 31/01/2016 11:44

I was the same overnight, could never miss a night feed because I'd be too full and uncomfortable plus I'd have heard him anyway - I had supersonic hearing when I was night feeding and every little snuffle disturbed me.

It is hard doing it all single handedly but it doesn't last forever.

laughingGnomette · 31/01/2016 12:02

My baby essential with DS.
It was the only reliable way of getting him to sleep when he was tiny :(
White noise machines didn't cut it, the hair dryer had to be on full blast held about 2 feet away from him. Strange child.
We weaned him onto a white noise MP3 at about 5 months old and he had it on all night every night until he was two.
It just goes to show each child's 'essentials' will be different :)

nehagarg · 31/01/2016 12:13

The only reason I am thinking glass is because of the chemicals in plastic. Yep, I am one of those oddball people. Grin Since this is my first, breaking glass is only a concern if we are sleep deprived. No other kids to cause breakage. DH suggested having both glass and plastic to have a less heavy thing to carry when we go out and for when baby is bigger and can throw things around.

Thanks for the link emma ... You have inspired me to go bargain hunting too now. Will post if I find something. Smile

Pretty sure all baby bottles are BPA free though. Glass seems like a terrible faff plus it's the teat that a baby either takes to or doesn't - can you use any teat on them or just the ones they come with?

nehagarg · 31/01/2016 12:32

You can use any teats. They are BPA free but there are loads of other chemicals that havent been tested or found yet or ones they think are ok. We'll see. Havent decided yet and will be breastfeeding most of the time (i say, like its all in my hands) so bottle dependency will only be for when DH will feed.

I will be staying here too. No FB.
the white noise baby app is very good too. The first time DD slept for any appreciable amount of time was when we put that on. I am kind of addicted to it too myself now.

dollydaydream84 · 31/01/2016 12:44

Sorted our newborn and 0-3 clothes out of the loft last night as all the pinks and neutrals were mixed up. Plenty of brand new neutrals for newborn as DD was too big for them.

Wondered if anyone who had had a summer baby in the past could advise me what newborn babies go in in the day (i'm thinking sleeveless vests or t-shirt style vests) and a long sleeved sleep suit at night? Will get a few little outfits but DD was mostly in sleepsuits for about 3 months day and night - the ones we have are fleecy as she was a winter newborn so I'm not sure what I will need for a summer newborn!

mrsmugoo · 31/01/2016 12:47

Well after 6 months they use plastic bowls, sippy cups and spoons anyway plus you'll catch them licking the pushchair wheel or something anyway - I'm not sure you can be that picky about what they ingest!

dollydaydream84 · 31/01/2016 12:50

MAM bottles were great for breast/bottle fed baby, had no issues with them at all. 2 friends also concur

dollydaydream84 · 31/01/2016 12:51

ha..just read back and seen a full conversation about what summer babies wear - apologies! i can't keep up!

Mrspopper · 31/01/2016 12:59

We used tommee tippee bottles and combination fed. Though she me wound drink from anything! They have tt bottles on offer in aldi so we stocked up for this baby.. Who will probably turn out to be fussy! Went swimming today it felt so good.
