I've signed up for NCT, I don't have any local pregnant friends either so I figured it was a good way to meet people at the same stage as me, there's also held about a mile away- so pretty handy. I've joined the daisy birthing pregnancy yoga/classes which are nicely informative, so I'm not expecting to get much out of the NCT in terms of info, but I could be pleasantly surprised!

Grapefruitforever · 25/01/2016 21:33

Hello, a bit late to the party but only just discovered mumsnet! I'm 18 weeks today with my first and recently moved up to Yorkshire.
On the NCT front, I've just booked a local course hoping to meet some other friendly faces in the same position - fingers crossed. Scan is another 10 days - lovely to see lots of pics from all you early June ladies Smile

MollieRos · 25/01/2016 21:53

Welcome Grapefruit! (and anyone else that's new that I didn't spot!)

We signed up for NCT in the end- we don't have any friends locally with babies so thought it would be worth it for the social side of things. And the only local NHS classes run during the day for 8 weeks, there's no way my DH would be able to get that off work! We ended up paying the extra for membership just because they're a charity.

We haven't bought anything at all either... it still seems way too early, and I'm 22 weeks tomorrow!

MindfulBear · 25/01/2016 22:23

Evening! We did Nct last time and got membership for a year. The course was good, better than the NHS equivalent for info and it was run over a weekend with our other halves and we had a separate women only bf session on a weekday. Dads were invited to part of the bf session and only my DH turned up!!!.
The Nct classes were also handy (in fact this was the reason I signed up) to meet similar women in the same area of London who would all be off at the same time. In fact one of them turned out to be a girl from my brother's year at school! Small world.
We have all stayed in touch but sadly I'm in a new area of London and none of them are going to be off at the same time anyway....
Membership was crucial in order to get early access to the nearly new sales in our area. I used to volunteer so I could look even earlier!!!

I was thinking of doing a NCT refresher course this time round but they only run them on weekdays mornings and I work full time so won't be able to attend. Nor do I want to attend a course with "yummy mummy gym bunnies" with rich husbands who can afford to live in the area of London on one salary..... (Gross generalisation I know). A friend did Nct in brighton and she was the only one to plan to continue working after her first born came. As a result they ostracised her. I really don't fancy that happening to me. Hence I'm looking into other refresher options in my area where i can meet other mums who have at least 1 already and plan to continue working at some point. I feel it will be difficult to meet up with mums who only have one baby as our needs will be so different - DS1 couldn't go to the pub on a Tuesday morning to chill out with babies and mummies.... He would go mad and it would be very stressful!!!! I need other mums that understand :)

GrubbyWindows · 25/01/2016 22:36

mindful my area has a great local web forum which has antenatal club threads like this one, and people use to make friends. I know there is a summer 16 babies second+ timers thread on there, your area might have something similar?

MindfulBear · 25/01/2016 23:32

Thx for the tip grubby. Will take a look

MindfulBear · 25/01/2016 23:32

Ladies, I'm terribly bunged up.... What are you doing to relieve constipation?! I need HELP! Im in a bad mood as a result Angry

GrubbyWindows · 25/01/2016 23:59

mindful, steam? Shower/bath or bowl of hot water and towel over your head.
That and swearing and grumping.

GrubbyWindows · 26/01/2016 00:02

Oh no mindful I read that as bunged up with a cold!!!!
Ignore the steam!!! Prunes?? Drinking lots of water is meant to help, my friend swears by starting each day with a litre of hot water with the juice if a whole lemon, which apparently purifies her. Two days of it gave me the massive runs...

JellyBaby26 · 26/01/2016 00:37

Prunes, bran, pears, beans and lots of fluids for constipation.

Don't push too hard or you may get piles!!

bikingintherain · 26/01/2016 06:14

Ha grubby!

I was reading your first post and was confused as to how a towel over the head was some mumsnet wisdom I hadn't come across yet!

I can do NCT but midwife was encouraging me to do a session on antenatal care in the Netherlands. Normally I'd say no but I wonder if I might make some friends doing it, so maybe worth it. But I'm in the same position as you mindful, I also have to work around two other children. So we'll see if works out or not.

Welcome to the new people who have joined recently, and congratulations!

emma85x · 26/01/2016 06:33

Hahahahaha grubbywindows that was so funny! Get a bowl of steam and.... Sit over it?!!! Shock Grin mindful I've had exactly the same problem ever since I found out I was pregnant. I haven't found a cure unfortunately buy stool softeners are OK to use but check the brands with the pharmacist. Also try just sitting on the loo for 15-20 minutes with your feet on a couple of yellow pages or something to raise your knees up slightly. It seems to get some slowly but surely movement going down there. Good luck!!

I felt baby move this morning!! I was just lying here on my side and felt several 'popping' feelings. Really special moment. What a fantastic way to start the day!

strawberrypenguin · 26/01/2016 07:28

I didn't do NCT last time and I won't this time either. Partly it's expensive and partly I've overheard the people who run the local one being disparaging about formula feeding and I ff my first (and don't feel guilty about it - he wouldn't latch and had crashing blood sugars) and I know I couldn't keep my mouth shut if they started with that during a session! I made local mum friends going to a drop in group in our village hall once DS1 was born and I have more 'mum' friends his time round anyway.

strawberrypenguin · 26/01/2016 07:29

That's great about feeling movement emma it's a lovely feeling isn't it.

bikingintherain · 26/01/2016 07:36

So I was just talking with my DS(3) as the kids were getting dressed and he looked at his willy and looked at DD and said "when I'm bigger I will have a bottom like DD". I said "no because DD is a girl, when you are bigger you will be like daddy because you are a boy".

Then he said "when I'm bigger I will have a BIG willy like daddy!"

I can see him spouting this out at anytime, not sure if DH is going to be delighted or not when I mention it to him.

nehagarg · 26/01/2016 08:24

biking thats hilarious and adorable.

mindful fruits and veggies are the only thing that work for me. As much as you can. Also brown rice instead of white, beans, lentils. Putting your feet up while you are on the loo is also a great suggestion. And warm water with a bit of lemon all throughout the day.

Anyone else's OH putting on sympathy weight? My DH has gotten a bit of a belly in the past few weeks and is freaking out. Grin

JellyBaby26 · 26/01/2016 08:48

DH looks more pregnant than I do!

I need to put him on the 5:2 diet.

I have my second cold of this pregnancy, as does DD. no sleep for us!

Belleboo23 · 26/01/2016 09:16

My dh is moaning about putting on weight aswell he says his jeans are getting tight I hadn't really noticed though.

Biking that's so cute bless him!

Lovelybeano · 26/01/2016 09:41

I don't seem to keep up with the thread anymore, we're fitting a new kitchen so between work, kids and diy I haven't been online too much. Hope everyone's doing ok ?
Has anyone thought about working from home after baby arrives ? Any ideas on where to look for homeworking jobs ? I'm a mobile beautician so I'm quite flexible work wise but I really don't want to go back to working late evenings when the oh gets home if I can help it so I'd like to explore other options to see what's out there Smile any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated xxxxx

LaPharisienne · 26/01/2016 10:28

MindfulBear I fear the yummy mummy gym bunnies too - had to laugh - and that's why I've been a bit :( about NCT. But am also going to a weekend course (I work FT too) and fingers crossed there'll be some people with a sense of humour. I found drinking apple juice helped btw...

I am so enormous! People keep being surprised that I'm only 18 + 6 so it definitely isn't me being paranoid. Why me?! Definitely only one baby in there but I'm starting to think I'm going to give birth to the hulk...

laughingGnomette · 26/01/2016 11:48

So chuffed, everything was perfect with the scan. He was wriggling all over the place and I could feel him kicking all the way above my belly button when he was being measured. We also saw him yawning and sucking his thumb! I'm on cloud nine :)

"Nor do I want to attend a course with "yummy mummy gym bunnies" with rich husbands who can afford to live in the area of London on one salary..." mindfulBear I'm with you on that one! The number of shock horror looks I got when I told other mums at baby groups that I was going back to work . Thankfully the other ladies in my NCT group were in the same position as me so we were able to support each other when it was time to go back. In fact, the majority of us went back full time (good old London mortgages/rent).

Welcome Grapefruit!!

Good luck to anyone else with a scan today x

nehagarg · 26/01/2016 12:24

Woohooo ... Congratulations Laughing. Glad all is well Smile

I'll let DH know that its not just him putting on weight. Not sure if that'll reassure him though. He has been doing abs every second he has free.

Love it biking- so cute!

Congratulations laughing I'm glad everything went well.

The last couple of days I've sometimes been able to see my bump moving as the baby kicks, which is very strange! It does also mean that when I go to bed I spend ages staring intently at my bump waiting for him to kick... and insisting that my DH also stares intently Grin.

emma85x · 26/01/2016 18:02

Congratulations laughing Can we see a photo?!

Lovelybeano · 26/01/2016 18:42

Congratulations laughing !!
