re. buggies- I have a Mamas & Papas travel system and it is so big and heavy that I can't push it with dd in it anymore, she is only 19 months!! I wouldn't recommend a Mamas & Papas buggy to anyone as you only get 6 months warranty. My suspension went funny after 8 months and they wanted to charge me loads of money to get it fixed! I told them where to go!! I now have a buggy that is really hard to push. It is also so big it won't fit in the car unless there is nothing else in the boot.

I have a Quinny Zapp and I love it! It folds up really tiny and it brilliant to push and it comes with a carry bag which is great. We went all the way to Australia in Sept and the bag protected it completely. It is still good as new. It is only suitable from 6 months, but you can get a new born car seat to make it a travel system.

Does anyone have any experience with double buggies? I'm really stressing about which one to get.

beckyw1982 · 11/01/2007 12:24

Hi hope you don't mind me joining in, i am 23 weeks pregnant and really want to start doing some excercise as my bum is getting bigger as well as my bump i am really struggling to find anywhere that does prenatal classesin my area. Does anyone have any info or contacts that might be able to help i live in Winchester.

hollyandalice · 11/01/2007 12:28

Hi becky, I have been looking for somewhere that does pregnancy yoga classes so I can get fit and get my muscles back! I live in Southampton. If I find anywhere I'll let you know.

beckyw1982 · 11/01/2007 12:31

Thanks thats great, I have got deatils of somewhere that does Yoga in Portsmouth - portchester but it's abit out the way for me. If you want the deatils i'll send them on to you. Alot of the classes have a course fee for like 6 wks but i want to just go in the evening and do a pay as you go just incase i don't want to go one week then i won't feel am wasting money.

beckyw1982 · 11/01/2007 12:32

Sorry my spellings awful

Seansgirl · 11/01/2007 12:47

Hollyandalice - I dont have any experience with double buggies - but at least one friend that does will ask her when see next week and report back. Im going to have a look at the Quinny Zap sounds like its tough little buggy!

Seansgirl · 11/01/2007 12:48

Sorry live South Birmingham cant help on classes. Anyone else live my way?

sputnik · 11/01/2007 13:33

Welcome beckyw1982, sounds like you're a perfect candidate for the new pregnancy exercise thread here . Maybe you'll find someone there to help you, or pick up some ideas of stuff to do at home.

The buggies thing really is a minefield. We got a Jane 3 wheeler travel system, the travel system aspect was great as DD basically slept for the 1st 4-5 months in the pram/carrycot part, saving us from getting a moses basket, and the carseat you can clip onto the chassis was invaluable for transferring her without waking. It was also comfortable to use for us and her.

BUT on the downside it's pretty huge, for example we couldn't fit it into the lift to get to my MIL's house without dismantling the whole thing and no way would I even try taking it on the train. Also, we live somewhere where we have to go everywhere by car and so it wasn't actually used that much for long shopping trips or walks to park or whatever. After about 18 months we really used it very little as DD likes to walk and we never have to go that far. So it's lucky really that no.2 will be coming to justify all the £££s we spent on it.

You really have to think about your lifestyle and how you'll be using it, and that's not easy if you're a 1st timer. I must admit I chose ours mainly on the basis of how cool it looked and a fantasy of long country walks with baby, which never happened of course.

This time I'm on the lookout for something light, cheap and that you can fold up/unfold with one hand, as I never solved the puzzle of what you're meant to do with your baby when you're doing this, I mean hold it in your teeth or something? Anyone have the answer?

strawberri · 11/01/2007 14:15

Hee hee... in your teeth..hmmmmmmmm
Went buggy shopping the other day with a friend and saw an african lady with a baby on her back-strapped on with just a blanket- AND one even smaller one on her front, tied on with a sheet!

Not sure I'd be strong enough....
Double buggys... Everyone in Brighton seems to have the Phil and Teds one which is a single with extra part, very good for doorways as quite narrow.

For hard wearing you can't beat the mountain buggy twin, my sister got one second hand for £150 and it's lasted four years, including camping trips and much offroading.

strawberri · 11/01/2007 14:28

Yes!! Buggy shopping is apparently much like buying a car!
Well pice of kit anyway....
Sorry I'm always miles behind on this thread, anyway thought I'd make you all feel a bit better about your weight- I don't have scales at home but just weighed myself at my mums and at just 16 weeks I've gained ONE AND A HALF STONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Worried I'll be in a tracksuit for ever so off to the excersise thread...
for antenatal yoga, try the British Wheel of Yoga website, they usually very helpfull

sputnik · 11/01/2007 14:35

Your African lady has reminded me we also had a baby carrier which we used quite a bit for shortish trips, but DD got very heavy quickly and it soon became uncomfortable. I hear slings are better, they basically look like you've tied a sheet around yourself, and I've been thinking about one of those this time. Good indoors too for when baby gets whingy and you need to get on with stuff.

How many babies do you have to have to suss out what it is exactly that you need d'you reckon? Auntymandy perhaps you can answer this question, or will you just be giving yours to one of the older ones to carry about?

beckyw1982 · 11/01/2007 14:41

Been on that British Wheel of Yoga strawberri and found somewhere that does it in my area so thanks for that....

notsolilKel · 11/01/2007 15:16

Hiya
could talk for years about buggies really - here's my experience. we got Jane 3-wheel travel system and it was grand. So comfy, smooth, easy to steer, not too big for shops or train into the city. The baby carrier is great in that it fits right into the frame, securely. However it was always a squeeze to fit into the boot of our mini. So from about 5 mo we've used a Maclaren Techno XT instead, which folds up to something tiny and I can lift it a lot more easily into the boot & out. I miss the nice cushy wheels on the Jane though. Maclarens are just too bumpy for very small babies in my opinion.

Now that no 2 baby is coming along and junior will only be 15 mo, we need a double buggy. Done lots of hunting of the threads and Phil & Teds seem to have solid reputation for baby/toddler combo so we'll go with that.

Anyone want a gently used Jane 3-wheeler??? Navy/black with rain cover... let me know!

marylou23 · 11/01/2007 17:04

Might be interested... have to ascertain how much involvement DH would like in the pram/buggy buying - it seems to be the only thing that men actually get their teeth into...!! Will have a look at it online and ask him. Where do you live?
Have been feeling little one kicking loads for past couple of days which is v. reassuring as doctor didn't feel for heartbeat at 16 week check up (am now 17+3). Was thinking about calling midwife and asking if I could pop in, but they've got a pager system and I hate leaving garbled messages on in, particularly as person taking message always sounds v. grumpy and reads it back to me like I'm a total freak (my last message involved me asking whether I could use a pessary for thrush, though, which has to be about as embarrassing as it gets !) Have also had crazy-pregnant-lady haircut - went in today for a trim and came out with a short gamine job. Love it though, and it'll be very low maintenance...

notsolilKel · 11/01/2007 17:43

I'm in SW London...

lolls at pg lady haircut. I did the same but crazy post-pg haircut a few months ago (small gap between DS and this baby ) and ended up with the Pob. Oh dear

auntymandy · 11/01/2007 18:00

Well I have been to see midwife and heard heartbeat so I know its not just Christmas cake and mince pies in there!!!

Daisybump · 11/01/2007 18:13

LOL at the crazy pg haircut...I went in for a trim before Christmas (hair was shoulder length with long layers) and came out with a short graduated bob. Also love it and it's less bother than my last job.

On the buggy front...I got through three with DS! A travel system from toys'r'us (made by Graco) which was great when he was tiny. I bought this cos the Mothercare three-wheeler that I had originally bought, although said from birth, didn't go totally flat and he kept on lolling to the side the porr wee mite. I used the mothercare one from three months, but it was too big for the boot of my ford Ka and very heavy so at eight months I bought a maclaren techno xt which was fab (sold the three wheeler to a friend, who has since used it for two babies...so very hard wearing, if a bit on the heavy side). Still have th the mclaren so will use it for this sprog (which reminds me I must get it serviced), but also want a pram to use from birth. Mothercare have got a new travel system which looks like a copy of the Bugaboo Gecko. It's got two smaller wheels at the front, but it comes with a carry cot and a car seat and i think it can either be forward or rear facing. It's reasonably priced too....so it depends on whether it'll fit in the boot of the car easily. But, as I plan to walk myself fit after this one....
Sputnik...you're really pushing the exercise aren't you? I must join on the thread...I managed ten lengths at the pool on Sunday and would have done more but an old shoulder injury has been playing up so I didn't want to overdo it. Also trying to get out for a walk at lunchtime, but weather has been awful this week. And, not forgetting those pelvic floor exercises! I hope that we are all remembering to do them. As a second timer, I was a bit lax with DS and after he was born wish I'd been better with it. So, don't put them off!!

auntymandy · 11/01/2007 18:21

ok.. I know I am a crazy oldie having her 6th but can you please acknowledge my joy!!!

Seansgirl · 11/01/2007 18:47

Aunty Mandy,

That is great news, it is very reassuring to hear the heartbeat as you do begin to wonder if anything is going on in there other than christmas nosh!

annobal · 11/01/2007 19:00

Auntymandy that's fab news - it is soooo reassuring to see the baby isn't it

Had a midwife booking appt yesterday (have independent mw but still need the NHS sometimes). They have booked me for a cardiac scan for the LO as DS2 is situs inversus (has heart and organs the wrong way around). Had one with DS2 as well as they picked it up when he was in the womb.

In regard to double strollers - we have a Phil and Teds - they are great for around town and in the park but not terribly hardy - they can fall apart a bit but they do have a 1 year warranty and if you buy from a good retailler you shouldn't have a problem getting bits replaced (we bought our first from a large on line retailler who has awful aftersales service and I would have had to be without it for 10 days - we replaced it after Malaysian ruined it from Daisy and Tom who have been fantastic as one of the zips is coming unstitched and they only need to sight it then send off for the part). Would definitely suggest getting the coccoon for a newborn. There is a current thread on them somewhere.

We also have a double Mountain buggy which is absolutely fantastic and very hardy - fantastic for the park and very snuggly when it needs to be but huge and won't fit in our boot and although narrow for a double is still wide.

Good luck - it is a minefield. If we needed a new single I wouldn't have a clue what to go for...

sputnik · 11/01/2007 19:08

Auntymandy, it's great hearing the heart isn't it, I remember the in my first pg, it was magical as I still hadn't had a scan or anything. While you're here can you give us the benefit of your long experience on the best way to move babies about?

twinkle5 · 11/01/2007 19:42

Strawberri- I'm also in Brighton and you're right about the Phil & Ted!

notsolilKel · 11/01/2007 20:27

congrats Auntymandy - thanks for sharing your bliss!! Next Friday is my scan, I can't wait!!

trace2 · 11/01/2007 20:32

great news Auntymandy! when do you have your scan??

NattyThomasandBump · 11/01/2007 22:04

scan is a bit early only just 20 weeks, but i wasnt going to argue i have also got a scan at kings (tomorrows is at mayday) as i am booked in at 2 hospitals, kings do a 23 week scan so got another date on the 31st! yay for me! teehee!

dont know if i will be able to sleep tonight as i am sooo excited.

i have already decided on my pushchair, the Cosatto Duet Lite Tandem. its basically a tandam stroller for two children, it folds umbrella style so it is the most practical.

will post a message on here tomorrow asap! let you all know if its blue or pink. im hoping for a boy for financial reasons, but a girl just so i have one of each (and can stop at two!!)

speak to you all tomorrow
