Congrats Auntymandy, that's fab news. Notsolilkel, I'm in SW London too! Spooky! DH out tonight, but will mention the system to him... Do you have the exact name of it so I can look it up on the internet? And a price? To be honest, this whole buggy thing is a minefield I hadn't started investigating yet - I'd been planning to do all the shopping over Easter (don't know if it's a not tempting fate thing, or just general denial about the fact that I've got to give birth, but I'm being very one-step-at-a-time about this whole thing. MIL asked DH if we'd started decorating the nursery yet. He said 'we're having a nursery?' Kind of dry sense of humour in my household...). So this Jane three wheeler system... it's a rugged one that's good off road, right? Or am I confusing it with another one? I'd like something that can get into shops but that can also handle a jaunt on the common without juddering madly... My sister's got a Stokke which she raves about - and I think she's going to pass it on to me, but nephew is only 18 months old, so might need it for a few months after mine's due (am doing my best to encourage him to insist on walking everywhere, obviously)

Hearing the heartbeat is funny isn't it? It makes you realise there is something alive inside you!! Heard heartbeat for 1st time yesterday as had my booking at 8 weeks and mw couldn't find heartbeat then. Had 12 week scan a while ago, but because it's all on a screen it doesn't seem like it's inside you, also everything is so tiny it's hard to make out. Didn't have 12 week scan with dd as Southampton have only just started doing them. The 20 week scan is much more exciting as you can really make out everything. You can see fingers and toes and all the facial features. I think that's really when it hits home!! You can also get some really good pics. I took mine to Boots and got them to blow it up big. Then I stuck it on my fridge so I could see it all the time! Have my 20 week scan this time on 30th, so can't wait.

Sorry to gabble on, it's just all v exciting!!

sputnik · 12/01/2007 10:55

The Jane 3 wheeler is definitely good on rough ground, very maneuverable and very comfy to push around (and ride in, I imagine). But it's quite bulky and heavy folded up and you'd have to check it goes in your car boot, my Dad's car has an enormous boot but the opening is narrow and we could only get it in by removing a wheel.
Those Stokke things look the business I must say, supposedly they even go up and down stairs.

I followed Seansgirl's lead this morning and ventured on the scales for the first time since before xmas.... bloody hell I have gained 7kg total. So I am going to have to push the exercise thing or will end up even bigger than last time. Trouble is, I can't help thinking about food all the time, I am really enjoying cooking and eating, looking up recipes etc. Don't know if it's a nesting thing, like Annobal was saying, or just my inner foodie (actually never really far from the surface) emerging or what. At least it means I am eating pretty heathily thuogh, if too much. I have the remains of a packet of pringles in the cupboard I'm not even slightly interested in finishing.

notsolilKel · 12/01/2007 12:27

Hi Marylou - our buggy is Jane Slalom Pro with Rebel car seat in Navy originally £430 a year ago. It is indeed the 3-wheeler model which is small enough for city shops and wheels handle parks/rough terrain v well (they're air inflated so very smooth ride). Link to product details is here

Price is nego - if you want to offer email me at kelly.voetsch @ yahoo.com. We'll prob look to advertise on ebay or MN if we don't find anyone quickly (like yourself) who wants it!

Sorry for the tangent everyone else and happy Friday

Daisybump · 12/01/2007 14:04

Great news Auntymandy...hope I didn't seem rude by ignoring you yesterday, but you must have posted after I started typing mine!!

auntymandy · 12/01/2007 14:05

Not sure when my scan will be..waiting for appointment.
What do you mean about moving?

marylou23 · 12/01/2007 14:08

I think Sputnik was referring to the Big Pram Debate... (as opposed to how to make babies dance a jig in utero, although that would be pretty cool, too...)

auntymandy · 12/01/2007 14:11

oh!! feeling dim today!!! nothing unusual there then!!

Think how much you would really use a pram etc before you spend loads on one. If you use the car alot, will it fold down easily and fit in the car. when will you use it and where?
I didnt have a pram for last one and probably wont for this one!

strawberri · 12/01/2007 14:12

So Twinkle5 , fellow Brightonion, any experience with the NCT down here? Not due till end of June but looking at antenatal classes as first baby, SCARED? Me? Noooooo............

strawberri · 12/01/2007 14:18

Sorry to but in here but quick query for y'all Have any of you more experienced mums used heart monitor thingy at home? I've heard nowt so far and was given info on buying one, their pricey........ Worth it?

sputnik · 12/01/2007 14:54

No direct experience Strawb, but I remember reading a thread on here once where somebody had one and was thinking of getting rid of it as it took a while to find the heartbeat each time and she was finding it stressful.

I used to live in Brighton too, once upon a time. Say hi to the beach from me one of these days, if you can get down there without being blown away

trace2 · 12/01/2007 15:00

i my self wont be buying a pram, i wont some thing what lays flat, but light and folds down easy and cheapish, dont want to waste money this time

hollyandalice · 12/01/2007 15:03

Hi Strawberri, I personally wouldn't bother with a heart monitor. Soon you will feel your baby moving around so much that you won't be able to sleep and every time you sit down it'll kick you in the ribs or bladder (depending on which way up baby has decided to be today!). Also if you're ever worried and feel less movement than you feel is normal just ring your mw. She will be able to pop into you and hear the baby's heartbeat and check everything is ok. Or just pop into the midwife unit at the hospital (if yours has one), they won't make you feel silly, it's what they're there for!

strawberri · 12/01/2007 15:12

Thanks ladies, thought was maybe one of those "must have" items making us spend money we don't have but thought I'd ask.....was trying to hear it through my mum's stethescope the other day, only gurggles from lunch detected though...

Seansgirl · 12/01/2007 17:02

Strawberri, at you listening to your lunch! Have to admit the monitor thingy is tempting, but as HollyandAlice said you'll be surprised just how much they start to move (some more than others) and if you are worried popping into the MW unit at your hospital is the best bet - I did at least 3-4 times with DD they were absolutely fine about it - they put you on the monitor for about 15-20 minutes its great!

You're right about the clever marketing people convincing you you need all this stuff - we all fall for it! I bought alot last time and TBH could have done without some of it.For instance - I never used my baby monitor in the end as we are in new house and walls so thin could hear DD before the monitor picked her up! I use it more now if we stay somewhere like a hotel so i can put her to bed and still go and enjoy myself. Used it at my brothers wedding in September - did get some funny looks walking around holding a monitor and a glass of wine tho! Was a ice breaker for conversation for those guests I didnt know!

glass of wine......those were the days !

Seansgirl · 12/01/2007 17:04

So it seems I am the only Brummie on here then? or is there anyone else out there?

twinkle5 · 12/01/2007 18:20

Strawberri, I have registered for the NCT classes but haven't heard anything back from them yet so I don't know if I got a place. They are really over subscribed I think. Also my first, so I'm after all the help I can get!

doggus · 12/01/2007 18:25

I joined the NCT and emailed them at 14 weeks to join the antenatal classes (am totally clueless on which end of baby is which) - I'm now 16 weeks and got an email back saying I am on their waiting list. I wonder if that means I'll get in - I'm in Poole, btw.

strawberri · 12/01/2007 18:29

Wow, cheers twink, better get a move on and register, wonder how they decide who gets a place, first come first in I guess.....

auntymandy · 13/01/2007 06:38

strawberri, its upto you if you want a heart monitor, is there a need for one? Sorry I just keep skimming the thread!!
If its just so you can listen in for pleasure then I think its an expence you could manage ithout, but if you have a worry, chat to your midwife.
I taped DS1's heart beat!! how sad is that?!!!

nikie1 · 13/01/2007 07:05

hiya,,,
sorry to just drop in i was hopeing i could join your thread????????
i'm 24 married and i'm 19week's pregnant i'm from solihull, birmingham and think it will be nice to chat to everyone who is due around the same time as me also how they are feeling .......
i'm due june 9th and cant wait xxscan showed that i could be haveing a boy gotta have it double checked on the 8th feb !!!!!

notsolilKel · 13/01/2007 12:27

Hi - this is my 2nd -welcome all newbies!

re heart monitor - we got a cheapo one from Bloomin Marvelous (£30 maybe) which is like a walkman - you strap it to your belly, put on the headphones, and concentrate...

For the last few months it was really cool. Could hear heartbeat whenever you wanted, which for me was nice, as I'm a bit paranoid like that and DH could hear it too.

It's tough to distinguish the heartbeat sound from 'noise' before 20-24 weeks but after that I think it's a fun toy to have!

auntymandy · 13/01/2007 13:30

welcome nik.
Full of cold today feeling dreadful. ache all over. bump hurts when I cough and sneeze!!

doggus · 13/01/2007 15:43

Welcome nikie. Seansgirl is from Brum too I think.

Poor you aunty mandy - try paracetomol for the aches and Olbas Oil steam for your head. Everyone I know has a cold/virus at the moment. I have a theory that the weather is warm and the viruses breed.

strawberri · 13/01/2007 18:28

Hi Niki, thanks for feedback guys, thought I could feel something with my hand this morning, was my own pulse in my thumb................hmm, yeah I know.

Auntymandy sorry you're not feeling well, I've a horrid cough too and bump also hurts when it strikes, not great for my first timer paranoia. I think taping the heart beat is sweet!!

Anyone new to this pregnancy lark, there's a very funny thread about 'all the things no one tells you about until you've had a baby then every one nods.....' or something, made me chuckle and feel so much better bout my own ailments.
