Marylou, absoluetely! shopping to keep ypur mind off it is the best plan. And like H&A says be open minded... and go with how you feel at the time. A "I think I can, I know I can" attitude has got to be a good start!

You never know you could be one of those lucky first timers that sails through it no problems. My friend did she slept through most of her contractions, woke up, had a bath, went in they burst her waters a hey presto her DD was there!! Her second has been just as easy. If you do end up having a section it doesn't mean to say you cant have VBAC, another friend had a section first time and not the second and again her DD just popped out! She said they were getting her ready for an epidural and she said "but I need to push!" and she was right!

notsolilKel · 02/02/2007 14:23

hiya - H&A glad my lipbalm tip worked. It really is great - feel like I should do an advert for it...

Marylou, I really, really wish I could tell you something reassuring. I was hoping for plinkity-plonk calmness, water, and serenity for DS' birth. I was of course (I thought) prepared to 'go with the flow' but as chance had it, the flow took me through every painkiller known to man and my boy needed emergency medical care within 10 seconds of being born (no exaggeration). It was essentially my worst case scenario come to life. I was so disappointed and shocked at my baby's near-death experience that I've insisted on planned c-section this time round. It's almost a joke now amongst my antenatal-class friends, how you hate the idea of epidural or drugs going into it, and looking back, it was necessary and not a big deal. Not like it taints you or anything. . I like the idea of a first-timer starting in birthing centre adjacent to hospital. That way if you lose the plot (like I did after 18 hours of solid contractions and 1cm dilation!) you can transfer to hospital and get heavy duty assistance. NOTE: even with epidural and pethidine and gas&air I could push, did push, and it hurt like H*ELL!!!!! But I survived.

Seansgirl · 02/02/2007 14:45

Lilkel, I'm not surprised after 18 hours of contractions and 1cm you lost it! Think most would have lost it way before!
Its interesting to know with epidural you could still push, I was always led to believe that you couldn't. Knowing that now, I think I may not neccessarily discount it this time.

marylou23 · 02/02/2007 16:50

It's a boy!! A very wriggly, naughty boy, too - wouldn't stay still for a moment, was too busy grabbing his feet and doing somersaults to worry about the poor ultrasound nurse trying to get measurements. Photos are pants - they're all blurred! But all very healthy, which is all the matters (and he's still wriggling now. I think I need to safety-proof the house now bearing in mind how mobile he is...).
Lilkel, you poor thing - I think that, though, is exactly what makes me think twice about birth centre - private room and all that is great, but if little junior needs medical attention I don't want it even five minutes away; I want it right there, right then. Oh, is so impossibly difficult. All I hope is that on the day I'll have some warning if things aren't going according to plan and will have time to transfer to hospital in time...

sputnik · 02/02/2007 17:14

Just to add my birth experience, I was hoping to do it without an epidural, here they don't offer water births - except privatly - and no gas and air either so it's kind of all or nothing.

I was doing ok with the contractions until they broke my waters, when it suddenly became much more painful. They then told me I had to decide on the epidural as if I became more dilated it wouldn't be possible and I went for it like a shot. Soon after I was walking up and down the corridor grinning from ear to ear! From then on my recollection is a bit hazy tbh, they gave me a second dose at some point but when it came time to push I couldn't really feel the contractions and they had to tell me when. Probably I could've done with a lower dose.

Anyway all was fine in the end, it was a still a great experience I wouldn't mind repeating, however, I am going to be talking to my gynae about it, hopefully next week, and how maybe it could've been done differently, so me and DH are better prepared and more in control this time. I'm thinking about talking to an independent midwife about it too (first consultation is free!) to get another opinion, but it would be quite alot of money to go that route.

I think the whole birth thing is something you obsess about beforehand but in the end, if you both come through ok it doesn't actually matter how they got there!

sputnik · 02/02/2007 17:21

Congratulations on your scan Marylou.
That reminds me, in yesterday's shopping frenzy I forgot to let you all know I had my amnio results and all is fine, so very

Also thanks Lilkel for the Formes link, some nice stuff and am bookmarking for when the weather gets a bit warmer and my credit card has taken a bit of a breather.

marylou23 · 02/02/2007 17:35

Yay! Very pleased for you
Agree, Formes looks v. nice. But got isabella oliver dress today (love it), so maybe I'll wait a while before getting anything else...

Seansgirl · 02/02/2007 18:32

Great news for you both Marylou and Sputnik! (I mean the scan and amnio and not the shopping obviously but hey, well done there too!) Have to say Isabella stuff looks lovely (if a bit expensive!) but just can't imagine myself in it looks like it would show wobbly bits too !(of which I own many!)

Marylou, AuntyMandy could be the one to ask on the births she is on no6 isn't she?

annobal · 02/02/2007 18:39

Well done on the positive results Marylou and Sputnik.

In regard to birth, both mine were very different but didn't have any pain relief for either. DS1 was born at 31 weeks and frankly it was all over so quickly that there was not much time for any sort of pain relief (waters broke and he was born within the hour) - that is apart from g&a which definitely didn't agree with me. DS2 took 8 hours (double the size) from waters breaking to delivery (including an excruciating 2 hours pushing). It was a "flat on back in delivery suite" experience as I was hooked up to a drip for most of it (ABs) - definitely not an experience I want to have again. This time I have a IMW and would like to have a home birth with a pool - think I will just wait and see what happens.

Can also vouch for Formes - they have a lovely store in Covent Garden (could check it out on the way to Cath Kidston store in Neil Street) - their clothes are so nice to wear and look great on (admittedly I will NOT be wearing skinny jeans ).

notsolilKel · 02/02/2007 19:16

Great news MLou and Sputnik!! I love good news

Mlou, which IOliver dress did you get? For some reason I don't wear dresses except May-September. Apart from xmas do's. But I'm always on the hunt for one that could break that trend! And a boy on the way too! I'm just about to pack up all DS's 0-1yr clothes not lkg fwd to it...

Thx for the supportive messages re DS' birth. I am actually quite nervous second time round. Just going to be glad when it's over!!

Oh question re shopping (what else?): I love Petit Bateau stuff - someone gave us a sleepsuit for DS and it looked & felt soft and lovely even after many washes - anyone know if they do wrap-over bodysuits? I'm on a mission to avoid over-the-head stuff for the first couple of months. Anything to prevent that purple-faced screaming you get when you change a teeny one!!

hollyandalice · 02/02/2007 19:29

congrats sputnik and marylou- healthy small people all round !!
Went into Mothercare just now and am def feeling better about having a boy. They had some lovely small blue bits. Also had some lovely maternity stuff and it's all buy one get one half price, yay!! Am gonna wait til I get a bit bigger to buy some more maternity bits.

Lilkel Petit Bateau do do little wrap around bodysuits, dd had 2 really sweet ones with little bows on.

hollyandalice · 02/02/2007 19:48

Just remembered Gap do wrap around bodysuits too (with matching socks v. v. cute!).

annobal · 02/02/2007 20:28

Love Petit bateau stuff!!

marylou23 · 02/02/2007 20:37

Lilkel, got the ruffle wrap one in plum... it's gorgeous although a little low cut (even pregnant I don't have enough of a cleavage... grrrr), and nothing to indicate it's maternity so I think will be wearable afterwards... would have gone for black, but seem to be wearing dark colours constantly and figured plum would lift me a bit and it's very nice on. Now I just need good tights that don't dig in... any suggestions? I got a pair of mama spanx whcih are super comfortable, but they only seem to do nude sheer tights - not an opaque black in sight.
H&A glad you're feeling better - we'll have to share cute blue thing tips... I have to say, I'm really pleased I'm having a boy. I know they're a handful when they're small, but the ones I know are just so full of life - plus we'll get to be wicked MILs... (have a look at the thread on nightmare ones - lots of ideas to note down for future reference!!! )

marylou23 · 02/02/2007 20:41

Does Petit bateau have a Uk website? Looked and could only find France/US. Or do we actually have to venture out into the highstreet?

annobal · 02/02/2007 20:54

I got opaque maternity tights from Top Shop (footless) and from M&S - haven't worn them yet though...

Don't think Petit Bateau do a UK website - but have a look on Figaroo Kids (think it is figarookids.co.uk) have some lovely clothes cheaper than high street (loads of catimini and oilily stuff).

doggus · 03/02/2007 17:50

oooh I have some footless tights/leggings from New Look, you have just reminded me, Annobal. I'm going to have to wear them all summer I think, as one of the side effects of pg seems to be rampant varicose veins, out of nowhere. I had them in late teens, had them stripped, and now they're back. I am terribly self conscious and have started to back out of the room when naked in front of dh.

I know I am being lazy by not looking back but can anyone remind me of the loo paper bump measuring method. Is it across or down? Thank you!

marylou23 · 04/02/2007 09:52

Across. Widest bit.
Saw my appendix scar in the mirror yesterday after a bath - got a bit of a shock. It's already a pretty horrendous one (emergency appendicitus when I was eight, huge scar - one doctor subsequently told me he'd seen smaller cesarian scars...) and now it's growing!! Yikes...
Footless tights good idea - will hunt some down.

trace2 · 04/02/2007 10:08

hi all not been on in a while again! we have had problems, and didnt really feel like posting,

i had my 20 weeks scan and its chloe i was sure it was a boy, any way they also picked up a problem! they sais we have a Single Umbilical Artery, where they should be two and one vein benn offerd amio, but as am 40 overweight, and have problems with blood it too high a risk to take, so we have to wait until shes born. and i started my clexain injections on thursady too, the hardest bit is injecting my self.

so glad every ones scans was ok, and sorry for moaning just needed to get it off my chest

marylou23 · 05/02/2007 08:51

Trace, so sorry to hear that - it must have been a real shock, and I really hope that everything works out okay. x

hollyandalice · 05/02/2007 09:35

Hi Trace, hope you are feeling ok- sending {{{hugs}}} .

sleepychunky · 05/02/2007 10:16

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd add my update from my 21-week scan which I had on Friday. Everything seemed fine and baby weighs 560g at the moment with a big head (off the scale!) and big stomach (at the very top end of the scale). Just like its dad then

Didn't get very good pictures as it was lying face down but the sonographer said it was a big healthy baby, which is fine with me. We didn't find out the sex so our trip to Mothercare on Saturday ended up with buying lots of white things (plus some stuff for me in the buy one get one ½ price offer).

Don't want to wait another 18 weeks to see the baby but now it's moving around I guess I don't mind so much as at least I know it's OK.

Good luck to everyone else having 20 week scans this week

SC

justbeme · 05/02/2007 10:29

Hi - just jumping over from July thread again - Ive got my 20 week scan this thursday - can you answer me a silly question? Do you have to drink loads of water before hand? I would have thought not as baby must be so easy to see, but I dont want to get there and they tell me they cant carry on!!
Oh by the way went to Costco on sunday, last year I bought Birkenstock sandals from there (the ones which go in between your toes - i think they were about £26) - so far this year they have the silver slip on ones with the buckle - they were £20 or so!! How much do they usually sell for?

hollyandalice · 05/02/2007 10:36

LOL sleepychunky, my lo's head is off the scale too, all I can think is ouch!!
Justbeme, I wouldn't bother drinking loads of water. I did when I was scanned with dd and the sonographer made me go and have a wee coz my bladder was too full! This time I just drank my normal amount and that was fine. Anyway I don't think my pelvic floor could have handled me drinking loads and holding it in. I may have embarrassed myself all over the hospital!

Seansgirl · 05/02/2007 11:29

Trace, Sorry to hear you must be feeling very anxious, hope all is well I'm sure that they will keep an eye on things for you. sending lots of . SGxx
