Hi Girls,

Back from Geordieland!

Glad to hear you're having a fab time with your DH LG&T. Assume the ball was fabulous too and the champers flowed.

MKG - Got the nose bleeds too, but only intermitently. Thank Goodness.

Bethnalhembub - my 20wk scan is on the 16th too. Is your's at the Royal too?? Mine is 9am.

Got my mw appt today. Hoping she listens to heartbeat. Am getting anxious as little weight gain and it's too early for me to feel movement as this is my first, so convinced all is not well - pure pg-panic mode.

Pebble - sorry your DH is being a bit of a tw*t. Sounds like he needs to grow up a bit and make some grown up choices. He needs to put you and the kids first and give his mum a good talking too. She's only bluffing with the ultimatum. If he tells her how it's going to be she won't risk loosing him. MIL's - ARRRGGGHHH

12DOC, we have exactly the same deal, just with a different lender. Our broker was fantastic- completely unbiased, his wife had just had their first baby and he was lovely and couldn't have helped more. If it hadn't been for his continued help, we wouldn't be buying and I wouldn't be so

RobinRedBreastsKennedy · 14/12/2006 15:25

god I was following you for a short while TDOC but then you started using finacial advisor lingo and you lost me. Theres no hope for me.
Not at the moment anyway, I can just about afford my daily fruit habit. Theres me thinking I would be saving ££ not drinking and socialising. Oh no, why dont I just spend it all on expensive super fruits and bloody vitamins. And primarcjacobs.

twelvedaysofchristmas · 14/12/2006 15:31

Go see a financial advisor/ mortgage broker after Christmas. See what they can offer you and whether they make any suggestions as to how to improve the offers you'll get. The broker would definitely be free (they get paid commission by the lender on the deals they do).

Your bank may also offer some sort of "financial overhaul" thingy where they bring you in to chat about how you can manage your accounts better. I usually avoid them like the plague when they're offered, but I went to one and it was actually quite helpful. They pointed out things like DH and I are paying almost £30 in account "fees" every month when we could just have our joint acct as the "all singing all dancing" acct and have basic no-fee accts for our personal use, thus saving us about £100 a year straight away. It all adds up!

LetitShnowLetitShnowLetitShnow · 14/12/2006 15:54

12DOC can I ask you what might be a personal question? Feel free to ignore!

Do you have mortgage protection insurance? I can't decide whether to go with it. It's an extra £35pcm and our life insurance covers most eventualities anyway. Is it worth it? Anybody else a financial whizz and know if it's worth bothering?

twelvedaysofchristmas · 14/12/2006 16:06

Actually, DH and I had a bit of a barney over this as his life assurance wouldn't actually cover our mortgage. (Scary). He always gets huffy as if I'm constantly thinking about bumping him off or something. And says, but if 2/3 of the mortgage was paid by my life cover, surely you could cover the rest. I don't see the point of that at all. What happens if I have 2 more kids and don't have very much earning power? That's off topic, sorry!

Anyway, I have heard that "mortgage protection" is often more expensive than it's really worth. £35 pcm sounds an awful lot. The broker told us that provided we were happy with our level of life assurance and that the death of either one of us wouldn't cause us not to be able to pay the mortgage then it wasn't necessary.

So I guess, the idea is that you need to have enough in the bank to cover a few month's payments as I expect life assurance would take longer to be paid than mortgage cover, which might (I don't know) come into effect quicker.

Just need to get DH to up his cover now...

twelvedaysofchristmas · 14/12/2006 16:07

Oh and of course, some people might have mortgage cover so the mortgage gets paid off, and then have life assurance to cover living expenses or summat. Either way, upping your life cover to a suitable amount works.

Juicythe2ndnotsowiseman · 14/12/2006 16:34

We don't have mortgage protection. It depends on your circumstances. I think you can get it for loss of job and / or death??

For us the life insurance side of things doens't come into question as for DH's job the premiums are HUGE (works off-shore - classed as dangerous). His company covers him if he is injured or dies at work, but otherwise we're abit stuffed. We just have to hope neither of us kark it and if it happens, I or he would have to downsize.

You have to evaluate it for yourself and make some provisions, even if it's not the ones with the mortgage co.

OP posts:
twelvedaysofchristmas · 14/12/2006 16:42

JL, do they really only cover him if he actually dies on-site so to speak? Sorry, I know it's a bit morbid. My company has a "death in service" benefit which pays 4x salary if you die whilst employed. It doesn't matter if you're actually at work when you pop your clogs. It was the same in two other companies I worked for, which is what made me wonder for your DH.

If he's doing a "dangerous" job, one would think the benefit would be "death in service" for the fact you can't get life assurance...

BefnalhemBub · 14/12/2006 17:02

We don't have mortgage protection either - are relying on Life assurance too...

Very excited - had my GP appointment today to here Bub's heartbeat for the first time - around 130 (does that mean a boy?) but just brilliant to know its all well in there. Was also told that the Fundus height was already at my navel - anyone else been told this - I'm at 16+4 and it should be around 2 inches away .

...hoping its nothing to do with my recent addiction to traditional cornish pasties. why are they so nice?

lildrummerKel · 14/12/2006 17:17

Peacemaker, your DH sounds so lovely and sweet. A bit naive but it just enhances his appeal. Awwww. My charming son is delightful but the poor dear has only just figured out how to wiggle around (not even crawl) and he's 9mo. So you could get a slow mover too. It has its blessings...like, they remain where you put them! . Now that he's getting active and pooing more, I'm dreading where all this is going. Time to invest in some coco-coloured carpets?!?

Thx for the Primark suggestion. LOL re PriMarcJacobs. I like that

Just made some xmas cookies and am trying not to eat them all. or else when DH gets home he'll say, "oooh, great, but why'd you only make 8 of them?!?"

IMHO most insurance is not a smart way to invest your money. Better off putting the money into your favourite savings fund. I'd say that (good) life insurance and home insurance are worthwhile, but anything else tends to be just playing on people's fears. Truth is, if my darling DH did pass away, I doubt I'd stay here in sunny SW London, where it's almost too expensive for even DINKs to live...would be time to reassess a lot of things, and keeping this house would not be top priority. Just my view. Back to festive topics, pretty please !

LetitShnowLetitShnowLetitShnow · 14/12/2006 17:36

Okay, we can shut up about mortgage protection plans- sorry Kel! - I don't think we need one, just got to convince DH. I have great life assurance, his is passable. That'll do...

I wonder if there is anything in that heartrate theory. ShowOfHandsJr has a 146bpm heartrate. Not sure what that would imply- borderline boy/girl I think (interesting!). 130 is definitely on the slower side Befnal. What was your fundus height, my notes say 16 and I have no idea what that means?

I hate Thursday nights, I work till 7 and don't get home until 8. Still, I've spent the time wisely and I've done a big online shop- lots of Christmas goodies and onions to satisfy the cravings. Should arrive tomorrow afternoon when DH is off work so he can put it all away. As long as he doesn't snaffle my gingerbread man!

I can't wait for my scan on the 3rd. I can't keep referring to the baby as 'it', I want to be able to say 'him' or 'her'.

Where's mummymelling? Anybody seen her recently?

BefnalhemBub · 14/12/2006 17:43

can't find a height in my notes LetitShnow, she just told me it was up to my belly button (!)...haven't heard that one before.

I've just found out the hospital will tell us the sex if we want to know. Am in two minds as started off sure it was a girl, now the big head and the slow HR make me think it may be a boy. Does it make it more boring if you stop guessing...

LetitShnowLetitShnowLetitShnow · 14/12/2006 17:49

No idea. I don't dare guess, I do keep hoping though.

I couldn't not know!

largevirginbirthandtonic · 14/12/2006 18:49

Remember me?! Im out of bed now... Ha ha haaaaaa.

Guess what i did today, no laughing please or i wont share...

largevirginbirthandtonic · 14/12/2006 18:58

I did a 4 hour round trip for some KK's.....

It was sooooo worth it, i went to the tesco extra in weybridge. It had a whole KK stand devoted to them. I bought 2 boxes of 12 and 2 extra for the car!!!!!!! Dh thinks im nuts, which i am, he is afraid to eat any. I did let the kids have 1 each when we picked them up from school Xmas Envy

Congrats Skytv on the scan, a lovely little boy. I love boys, so easy and placid.

We have our anomoly scan and find out the flavour on tuesday at 12.15 I cant wait! The first to know out of all of you will be MereNoel, we are meeting up that afternoon with all the kids. Her's may run and hide I promise to log on as soon as im back at teatime though.

How are you all? Im very happy... The donuts are soooo nice, would you all like one?

jessinwa · 14/12/2006 19:22

"I love boys, so easy and placid."
WHAT?
i am a bit worried about you lvb&t. i think all the sex and donuts has distorted your sense of reality.
actually, i just popped on to tell you all what a feisty tyke (new word for me) munch has been today. his newest thing is hitting me and the dog. hitting me. as far as i know he has never seen anyone hit anyone before. i am in big, big trouble. he isn't even walking yet but he can kick my ass. great.
i haven't had a chance to read through the thread yet but from what i have read so far it looks like there has been a lot of talk about insurance and mortgages. yawn. i think i will keeping reading further down and see if i can find some good stuff. perhaps some naughty dreams or peeing the bed. i can only hope...

jessinwa · 14/12/2006 21:16

lvb&t, i am still up for sending you some fruit roll ups and lucky charms if you still want them. i just thought of it out of the blue while making some coffee. weird.

JonahB · 15/12/2006 09:20

Not caught up with all yesterday's threads, but I wanted to come on here, be selfish and complain.

WHY WHY WHY have I been feeling really nausious for the the past 2 days????? Please don't tell me this is 1st trimester morning sickness coming back to spite me . Is that possible? I feel as rough as a pig.

Right, moan over. Still feel ill, but feel better for sharing my inconsequential woes.

Hope you ladies all have a good day...

peacemakeruk · 15/12/2006 10:30

Morning Ladies,
Does anyone know whats going on with this site? The layout has changed and looks awful. I don't know whether its just me and my PC but it looks different - and not for the better.

peacemakeruk · 15/12/2006 10:37

I've found my answer, unbelievably its been done purposefully, I hate it myself, its much more difficult to read and navigate - I'm not a happy bunny

RobinRedBreastsKennedy · 15/12/2006 10:38

Morning! I see the prodigal daughter has returned! How are you LVT? bed sores?
(look at the flash new layout ooooh)

Just to share my dramatic morning, we have an office jack russel called Bertie. This morning he was left here on his own as the inhouse guys went out on a job. One of them really cleverly set the bloody alarm. So I got a call from the alarm company at 9am saying that the alarm had gone off and the police were on their way. I was still on the bus at the time so I didnt arrive for another 40 mins. All this time the alarm was going off and its extremely bloody loud. Only realised Bertie was in there when someone else reminded me. I was so flippin scared that I would get here and he would have popped his clogs of a heart attack or be completely deaf or something.
In torrents of tears running up the street to get here, imagining the scene.
Thank god, got in and he was hiding behind a cabinet (with his paws over his ears, well he would have if he was clever) and had shat and weeed everywhere. But he was alive. I dont really like Jack Russels, I prefer bigger dogs, but today he is allowed to do anything his little heart desires, poor little sod.

LetitShnowLetitShnowLetitShnow · 15/12/2006 10:39

Yeah they've changed the layout. I don't think many people like it! Lots of threads complaining about it... I can't cope with the block down the left hand side, I have to look at MN in a little reduced window (at work and secretly surfing) and I can't see half the text without scrolling across. Bah humbug! It's all too condensed as well. Definitely do not like.

Jonah- I had about four days last week of feeling terrible- nausea came back, intolerance of smells and certain foods, felt awful. Eventually worked out that I had been feeling so good after the hell of the 1st trimester that I was throwing myself back into things too much. Plus, I went from sleeping practically all the time to having 7 hours a night again. I thought I was back to 'normal' but while I feel much better, it's easy to overestimate what you can cope with. Try getting lots of sleep, resting and eating lots of vitamin enriched stuff- worked for me. I feel fine again. I do sympathise though!

LVB&T- chuck me a KK will you?

RobinRedBreastsKennedy · 15/12/2006 10:40

oh Peacemaker, our posts overlapped. Everything does look smaller eh. Its not so bad, does take some getting used to though

LetitShnowLetitShnowLetitShnow · 15/12/2006 10:40

[pathetic]

MistletoeandPebblemum · 15/12/2006 11:28

Morning ladies

I agree with you that this new layout is horrible. Came on here earlier to post but decided to come back later in the hope it had returned to normal. Its horrible, everything seems tiny and squashed. Do you think if enough of us moan they will change it back?

Ive got an hours peace, Dh has taken ds2 with him on a search for a part for our tumble dryer. Why does everything give up the ghost at Christmas, the other year it was our TV, then our video, so far this year my hoover has started falling apart and now my tumble has packed up when i need it most (i have loads of washing to do, the weather sucks so cant hang it out and ive not enough room indoors to dry it aaargh!!

I was on a roll yesterday, bought new decs and put them up, had a good tidy up then sat down to finish wrapping all the presents. That was when it all went to pot, i got halfway through and ran out of wrapping paper wheni only had a couple left to do I also felt rough all day, think it was something i had eaten the day before. It was really annoying I would suddenly feel hungry but within an hour of eating i would have to rush to the loo with stomach ache. I feel a bit better today but am going to stick with light food to give my stomach chance to recover.
