X-posted with ODog about the cup!

Southy84 · 20/01/2016 20:36

It's funny how things differ between midwifes/areas of the country. I like the idea of the cup, shame they don't offer that as standard. Can't believe you get a stick parsnip! Where abouts are you? I think I had a christmas food baby, luckily the weight has evened out and no real weight gain the past couple of weeks. Still massive bump though.

ParsnipSoup · 20/01/2016 20:41

I'm in Kent. Obviously we have serious budget issues. Also always slightly alarmed that they take the stick from me with no gloves on. Obviously they're less wee-phobic than I am (or maybe everyone else just manages to pee on the right end of the stick...). I also find it a bit funny walking through the health centre clutching my precious peed on stick. Have wondered what would happen if it was positive for an infection as surely then they'd need a sample to send off. Better than when I lived in Surrey and got charged 40p at the GP for a urine test pot.

frozensmoothie · 20/01/2016 20:56

I get given a pot at every appointment to bring back to the next one. Glad I'm not the only one who finds it tricky, a cup is a great idea! I was going straight to my appointment from work so ended up having to collect the sample at work and put it in the work fridge (in a plastic bag so noone could see what it was!) Blush

My surgery doesn't let me book my 28 week bloods until a week before and I can't book my 28 week appointment until after the bloods are done which is annoying. I've got to do the lucozade challenge test then too.

I'm feeling massive too, I start feeling uncomfortably enormous and full a few hours after dinner, bleurgh.

Southy84 · 20/01/2016 21:08

That's a bit wrong with no gloves but my midwife did the same last time, although saying that last time I got given a cardboard "hat" to pee in, a bit like what you get in hospital, to start with I was so happy about the prospect of being able to pee in something more substantial- until I realised Id have to carry it back past the waiting room (which had no door) and had this fear of tripping and flinging a hat of pee all over someone! Blush I don't know what situation is worse. Can't believe they charged you for a pee pot!

I may start asking for a pot in advance frozen, oh no to storing your pee in the work fridge Shock I don't think I could have plucked up the courage to do that. Does it have to be chilled then?? I'm hoping my midwife will do my bloods, she did he first lot at my booking appointment. What determines if you need the glucose test?

frozensmoothie · 20/01/2016 21:29

I had to do my sample in the morning as last time I had eaten cake before and my sugars were high so they wanted me to do one when I hadn't eaten anything that could cause the glucose to be high. It was a colleagues birthday so I knew I would be eating cake before the appointment so I had to do it earlier. Apparently it needs to be stored in fridge if it's going to be out for more than an hour otherwise bacteria could multiply Blush Blush Blush

Its standard to do the lucozade test in my area as part of the 28 week bloods.

ParsnipSoup · 20/01/2016 21:41

Some places do glucose tolerance test for everyone others only if you have risk factors (high bmi or family history of diabetes) or if you have symptoms like glucose in your wee or a bump measuring big. Gutted that here we don't get lucozade you get some disgusting syrupy thing that's mixed into water. Not looking forward to fasting and then having that. I get seriously hangry at the best of times...

Southy84 · 20/01/2016 21:41

Hmm cake, I could so eat cake right now! I will remember that for my appointment though. Ive learnt something new, I didn't realise that about temperature affecting bacteria- although it makes perfect sense.

GrouchyKiwi · 20/01/2016 22:10

I don't think they do a glucose test of that sort here - I certainly didn't do it at my previous practice for either of the girls. Will be interesting to see if they do it at my new place. Maybe it's not done in Scotland; anyone know? Have a MW appointment tomorrow so can ask her then - and will have to remember to call first thing to ask if I can get a pee pot at reception when I arrive. No idea what I'll use if I have to bring it from home!

Had my follow-up scan today to see the spine. No luck! Baby just doesn't want to move up from sitting as low down as possible. DD2 seemed to be very concerned at what was happening and kept saying "Mummy, otay?"

Sonographer agreed with previous one that we're probably having a girl, which is what I think, so thought I'd share that with you all now. DH and I are having a lot of trouble working out a full name since we've already used our favourites on the other two!

cantbelieveImquittingcoffee · 21/01/2016 08:20

frozen I loled at the idea of messing up a blood test by eating cake beforehand! I'm seeing the GP this morning for my check and hoping the same doesn't happen as I just had biscuits and Nutella on toast for breakfast!!
Might have to save up a wee though - they usually just give me a test tube sized pot when I get there and I have to use the toilet in the middle of the waiting room then carry it in, and I'm always worried I won't be able to go. Better a trickle than a waterfall though given the spot I've got to aim for!!

cantbelieveImquittingcoffee · 21/01/2016 08:22

And grouchy yay for the scan news!!
Can't remember if I mentioned in here or just on FB that I was volunteering for a research study? Well I didn't get called for the first one (involving a 3d scan) but got called for another one yesterday so am booked in for an MRI when we get back from holiday in February. It was only when I was telling my friend about it yesterday and how I'll get a video to keep of the baby that I realised how likely it is I'll be able to tell the sex from this - and I REALLY don't want to! Eek!!

Grouchy we really struggle with girls names, we could only agree on one first name for DD, whereas we had 3 options for a boy. Although I love DD's name and I only like the boys names.

I've just realised the first and middle name I like give the initials ET, my other option is EGG with our surname (although our surname is double barreled so kind of EGG-R). Do anyone think either would be an issue? I love both middle names but don't think they work together (DD and I have two middle names)

That's exciting cant! I'm under consultant care because of a few risk factors and I found out last week I'll get a scan at 28 weeks, which is a nice bonus.

ODog · 21/01/2016 15:15

Jealous of people getting more scans (although obvs pleased that in low risk and dot actually need one!) just wanted to shout that there's an October thread!

GrouchyKiwi · 21/01/2016 15:26

I loved having lots of scans with DD1 (they thought I was measuring small, but it was just because I have a long torso). It was so cool to see her every two weeks!

Saw MW today. Baby's heartbeat sounded like a horse galloping. That's my favourite. DDs were unimpressed this time. I've got a consultant appointment booked for 10 February so that will be interesting. Will talk to her about the possibility of a home birth. MW confirmed that I did lose a bit too much blood with DD1 so that makes me think it's less of a good idea. Will see.

I'm feeling really miserable today. Walked to the appointment, a little bit around town, had lunch in Costa and then walked home. I'm in so much pain now, joints and bump. I really hate that a little bit of exercise has this much impact. Just want to cry.

Southy84 · 21/01/2016 15:58

That's a shame baby wasn't playing ball grouchy will you need to go back again? Congratulations on your baby girl though :)

cant yes it's impossible to aim your pee into a tiny tube isn't it!? That's really interesting about the research study, definitely interested to hear about the scans they do once you've had them. I would wait to watch the video until after baby is here because Id be scared of seeing what the baby is, although if you tell them you don't want to know maybe they will avoid that area?

I wouldn't let initials put you off a name gunshot I think it's nice and quirky :)

I had a massive scare last night, started bleeding, ended up at hospital and luckily everything seems ok, no reason for bleeding but I feel so worried now. Baby is moving fine today and heartbeat was ok last night too.

Hope you're ok grouchy totally sympathise ive given up with walking too much. Big hugs.

GrouchyKiwi · 22/01/2016 09:02

That sounds scary, Southy. Glad all looks to be ok.

They won't do another scan, but there's really no need. Sonographer said it all looked fine, just couldn't get a shot of all of it. So that's fine.

GunShotResidue · 22/01/2016 09:17

My SIL had a bad bleed at 4 months but everything was fine (DN is now 2) apparently it's fairly common, but its still scary, glad to hear everything is ok southy.

frozensmoothie · 22/01/2016 10:01

Sorry to hear you've had a bleed Southy must have been very scary but glad everything is ok. Must be very frustrating to not know why. Hope all is ok now.

ODog · 22/01/2016 10:53

What a scary time southy. It happened to my mum when she was pg with my brother at around 4/5months. All turned out fine, as gunshot said I think it is fairly common.

Glad others are struggling with names. I have boy names coming out my ears but really struggling with girls. Doesn't help that DH is a teacher and has always known a horrible kid with whatever name I like! Grrrr!

cantbelieveImquittingcoffee · 22/01/2016 13:13

How scary southy - so glad to hear everything is ok though.

I'm in my first day off as part of my plan to cut back to 4 days a week at work using up holiday, the idea being to rest...saw the doctor yesterday for a 25 week check and she decided I needed a liver function blood test as I had a bit of a rash and have had really itchy skin, so spent 2 hours getting to the hospital, waiting for the test and getting home (so much for rest!!) and now I'm waiting in for deliveries for our new kitchen!
Had a student phlebotomist doing the test, I said I didn't mind, but poor guy messed up one arm, then messed up the other, he was getting super stressed and sweating like mad, he ended up having to call someone else so I've got arms full of holes now. I really felt for him and I was nice to him about it but I think in future if I'm asked if i am ok with an unsupervised student I might have to say no as it was unnecessarily painful!

Southy84 · 22/01/2016 18:42

Thank you for all your kind words, been back at the hospital again today due to another bleed. Waiting for swab results just in case I have an infection. Baby was kicking monitor off so no concerns over movements, it's just a worry to keep seeing blood :( it's nice to hear of others experiencing this so thank you for everyone being reassuring

That's great news no further scans grouchy :)

Oh no cant it sounds like a hectic and slightly stressful day! Hopefully next week will be slightly more relaxing! I hope your test results come back ok, how long do you have to wait for results?

ParsnipSoup · 22/01/2016 19:24

That does sound very scary Southy, but it also sounds like you're being well looked after. Hopefully it will be nothing, but it sounds like if it is an infection or anything else they'll pick it up. Very good that baby is being nice and lively to let you all know they're doing okay regardless of bleeding.

Can't that sounds like my experience with the student midwife doing my bloods. She tried her hardest, but was so nervous. Made much worse by the fact she knows that I take a lot of blood tests in my job. I'm sure I was even more useless when I started out.

So today I dropped my phone in the toilet. Currently have it in a bowl of rice hoping it will dry out. Thankfully it's insured, but I really don't want to pay £100 excess. I just can't believe I did it. At least it was before I'd had a wee. It was just before a big presentation so left me a bit flustered, all I could think about was getting home to try to dry out my phone!! In nicer news my MIL is visiting and has dropped off the cot SIL is giving us along with lots of lovely children's books, baby toys and some clothes.

frozensmoothie · 22/01/2016 19:49

Sorry to hear you've been back to the hospital southy. Hopefully they'll be able to rule out infection and good that the baby is still kicking away!

That sounds horrible cant. I have a massive needle phobia and will only let experienced people go near my veins! Hope you get the results soon.

GunShotResidue · 22/01/2016 20:50

Hope everything's alright southy, good to hear baby's keeping you reassured with kicks!

ODog we had a similar problem with boys names, DH has been in the army for 14 years and moves every 2-4 years, every name I suggested was the name of someone he had worked with and didn't like.

Hope your phone's ok Parsnip!
