First trimester worries and joys. Test taking, morning sickness, midwife appointments and scans. It's all happening.

Can't believe we filled up a thread already. (I'll get this deleted if someone's already created a second thread, but I didn't see one!

ljjeffro congrats on the scan! It's sort of been touched on already but I don't take pregnancy vits at all as the iron is a real killer on your digestive system. Unless you have reason to think you need iron if your diet is really terrible I'd recommend switching to a combined folic acid and vit D from boots. Then just vit D from 13 weeks. Those are the important ones.

cantbelieveImquittingcoffee · 26/10/2015 22:28

odog we are due date buddies! I have been dated either 5th or 6th may depending on if I listen to the NHS or private scan, not that I expect the baby to give two hoots about a specific date of course.
Tomorrow morning we have or final scan for now, we did the harmony test privately so had a scan at 10 weeks with the blood test, then had the NHS one on Friday with combines test, and now tomorrow we have the results of the harmony test and another 12 week scan. Hopefully I will sleep tonight as it's only a few days since the last scan, so SURELY I can't be freaking out about this one, can I?!

ODog · 27/10/2015 06:51

No I don't expect this one to worry about a due date. DS was 10 days late and worryingly they booked my induction at the scan yesterday for 16th may Confused

I suffer with constipation and plan to ditch the multivitamin when this pack runs out and drop to just vit d which I take anyway. You just have to make sure you eat a good diet. My iron levels were good at booking bloods though so I'm pretty sure I'll be fine.

Brenna24 · 27/10/2015 08:47

Thank you all. It was hard but that is another thing over. Glad all the scans are going well and I am glad you feel so positive after your appointment Tiff. Lots of love to you all.

starkers1 · 27/10/2015 08:50

Dorothea must say I really disagree with you and think your advice is wrong! Even midwife/health professional recommends you take a pregnancy vitamin as it contains the exact doses of everything we- and baby need.
Iron is essential B during pregnancy, its a very sweeping statement to say it plays havoc on your digestive system in general, even if this does apply to you. But the benefits far outweigh this issue anyway surely?

Below is from www.babycenter.com/0_iron-in-your-pregnancy-diet_1468.bc

  • The amount of blood in your body increases during pregnancy until you have almost 50 percent more blood than usual, so you need more iron to make more hemoglobin.

*You need extra iron for your growing baby and placenta, especially in the second and third trimesters.

  • Many women need more because they start their pregnancy with insufficient stores of iron.

*Iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy is associated with preterm delivery, low birth weight, and infant mortality.

PeasinPod1 · 27/10/2015 08:55

Brenna much love to you...

Thanks for the iron stats starkers I'll def continue with my multi pregnancy vits and haven't had an averse affect to them/iron (in fact I take extra iron as prone to anaemia!).
Jealous but happy for those who've had their 12 week scans... Mine is on Thurs, just getting very anxious...if all is well I will celebrate with a massive, disgusting, blow out MaccyDs takeaway Smile

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 27/10/2015 09:19

Sorry to jump in starkers I've been taking vitamins and folic acid bigger dose due to my weight, also thiamine and have regular b12 injections.
My latest bloods have come back that I've a very low folate level even though I'm taking folic acid etc!
Really worried now Confused
Anybody have any ideas?

ToffeeAppleMarsBar · 27/10/2015 09:47

Ahh I'm afraid I have absolutely nothing to offer towards the vitamin debate - I was taking conceptions vits and now taking pregnancy meds and was just planning to take them throughout the whole course. For me, I like to know that even on the days when I'm feeling a bit nauseous and can't handle 'good' food, that baby will still be getting everything they need. It's just piece of mind for me. Yes, my digestive system seems to be slowing down somewhat but nothing that I can't handle and my pregnancy app tells me that's normal anyway so just taking it as par for the course.

Brenna, lovely to hear from you and glad the service went well yesterday, even if it was incredibly difficult.

Blimey Odog, booked in for an induction already?!?!? That's forward planning!!

cantbelieve sounds like you're BOSSING all these pregnancy tests and scans. Hope scan goes well this morning, but like you said - sounds like you don't have anything to worry about!

ljjeffro Ahh good news on the scan! And yes, although it's worrying when you don't feel sick, I'm sure it's a blessing now that you know baby is doing well in there! I've not been too bad really - a bit of nausea and been sick a few times (maybe once or twice a week) but I feel so much better in myself now. That might be just because after we had the scan at the weekend I feel a bit calmer about things but I think I'm starting to enjoy being pregnant now!

VickyHW · 27/10/2015 10:29

Thank you Mollie and Toffee! I’m glad everyone’s scans are going well.
Odog wow having your induction booked in must make it feel very real!!

I had the tiniest amount of spotting yesterday (had a tiny amount on Saturday too) and had a complete panic, going in to the EPU for a cervix check this afternoon.

As for vitamins, I’ve been taking the Seven Seas one along with the extra folic acid – does anyone else have bright yellow wee?! I’m assuming it’s just the excess vitamins, like when you have a Berocca?

MollieRos · 27/10/2015 10:37

mama my booking in appt is this afternoon, I hope I get a nice midwife!

ljjeffro that's great- lovely to be put forward a few days! I'm really hoping my next scan ends up similar- my private scan the other week put me almost a week behind where I thought, so I'm crossing my fingers nothing's wrong and my bean is doing some catching up now.

Odog that's crazy that they've already booked the induction!

starkers that's really interesting information. Like several others I've just been taking a pregnancy multi-vitamin (pregnacare) to make sure I have everything I need.

I'm off work again today (feeling loads better though, and now feeling a little bit like I'm skiving, but I was so tired when i got up)... I told my manager earlier and as I expected she was lovely. She said I should take whatever time I needed, and not feel pressure to hurry back.

Earlier my friend at work rang and said one of the cleaners had asked her if I was pregnant- apparently I've been looking really pale and pasty for a while. The cleaner is flipping observant! I don't know her very well- she's lovely and friendly, I see her around often and we have brief conversations in passing, no more than that! My friend denied all knowledge, but I think I'll be doing well if I manage to keep this a secret with many more people till my 12wk scan!!

starkers1 · 27/10/2015 10:44

Peas my 12wk is also this Thursday and celebrating with a yummy & naughty takeaway sounds superb...will be copying this!

PisforPeter · 27/10/2015 10:47

How is everybody today??
I'm in bed with a grotty virus.
Have Harmony scan & blood test next week so that's something to look forward to.

frozensmoothie · 27/10/2015 11:24

Just back from my scan. Everything is looking good. Baby measuring 13+2 so due date changed again to 1st May! The nuchal fold looked fine, I had a blood test and should get the results in the next week or so. 20 weeks scan booked for 15th Dec and I'll need to make my 16 week appointment with the midwife at the GP surgery. Still doesn't quite feel real though!

I'm still taking the pregnancy vits. I don't know the results of my blood tests yet but all the women in my family seem to suffer from anaemia at some point. I'm alternating between constipation and diahorrea at the moment which is fun!

Hope everyone has a good day.

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 27/10/2015 11:52

Glad your scan went well frozen!

Been checking the post when I get home like a mad person, waiting for my dating scan date to arrive. I nearly wrestled DH to the ground yesterday and it turned out the envelope in question was just a bank statement Grin

Just been looking online for silly Christmas maternity tops (I know, I'm a saddo) but none of them seem to go up to bigger sizes, bit of a shame. The one I had my eye on has a Christmas pudding on the bump. But apparently only slim people are allowed to wear maternity tops...

Hey ho! About to pop to the shops as I realised I only seem to have one jumper that fits at the moment, and it's been a bit breezy here in the South East recently!

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 27/10/2015 11:52

Oh and get well soon PisforPeter! So many horrid colds and things floating around at the moment.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 27/10/2015 11:58

If you have reason to think you're anaemic or are concerned about your diet please take whatever helps, especially if you're not noticing any effect on your digestion.

However many women have good diets and good iron levels and don't need pregnancy vits. The only two universally recommended for all pregnant women are folic acid in trimester one and vit D throughout.

No need to squabble though. Talk to your midwife if you're having issues. Smile

DorotheaHomeAlone · 27/10/2015 11:58

Congrats on the scan frozen!

TodmordensDog · 27/10/2015 12:01

Hello all!! I'm so sorry I've not checked in, annoyingly life gets in the way!!
I'm off work on annual leave for a couple of weeks so hopefully I'll find some time to check in Smile got my 12w scan on Friday, getting quite nervous now, just want to get it over with!
Hope you're all having a good Tuesday and some of the symptoms are easing!! X

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 27/10/2015 13:33

I wasn't wanting to squabble and sorry if it seemed like that :(
Just wanted advice as the midwife was scaring me.
I won't ask again :)
Well done on the scan frozen

DorotheaHomeAlone · 27/10/2015 13:44

icant your comment wasn't at all squabbly! Smile People should definitely speak to a midwife if they have specific deficiencies.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 27/10/2015 13:55

Aw good. Phew! I was worried haha!
My midwife is useless and just accused me of not taking it and said I'm at risk of nural defects (sp).
There's nothing more I can do than what I'm doing ao just a bit frustrated Blush

cantbelieveImquittingcoffee · 27/10/2015 14:05

canthink it might be worth checking this link about folate/folic acid:
www.maisiehill.com/tag/folic-acid/
It could be that you are not absorbing it and need to take it in a different form - I know the woman who wrote this and she is an awesome therapist/doula and although I haven't been in the same situation myself it might be worth considering! Also sorry for the similar username, confusion reigns!!

Meanwhile -
So we had the harmony test results and scan this morning and because I was reassured already I actually enjoyed it, what a difference! We went to the fetal medicine centre on Harley street and would HIGHLY recommend it. My OH was born with club feet and so was v reassured that the radiographer spent time showing him the baby's perfectly formed feet, whereas the NHS scan last week (lovely as they were) said they couldn't confirm it was ok until 20 weeks. We also got shown the palate (no cleft) and great detail throughout and the scan was about 40mins. Yes £400 is a lot to spend, but for the scans at 10 weeks and 13 weeks and reassurance of the harmony test I am glad we did it.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 27/10/2015 14:13

Thank you cantbelieve.
I'm glad you had the results you wanted :)

Nicky333 · 27/10/2015 14:16

I had the results of my blood tests through at lunch. My WBC (white blood cell count) is waaaaaay off the scale. There was also a printed note in with the results, obviously one they put in with everyone's as it had a bit about 28 weeks or something scribbled out, that said my blood tests were normal.

Has anybody else had this?

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 27/10/2015 14:25

It normally means an infection Nicky although it can raise in pregnancy?
Someone else will know better than me :)
