Maybe this will really be the last one... until the postnatal one.

jabberwocky · 29/11/2006 12:15

Definitely let him know about it, spina! he needs to be there to show proper sympathy from the start if nothing else

LOL,aq, Im using my laptop when lo is bfing. It helps pass the time and right now he is nursing a lot. Good for getting that weight up, though. He's gained a few ounces and bilirubin was down a bit yesterday, so we're all quite pleased.

Hang in there, cal. btw , what's a TENS? I don't think we have them here.

spinasnowflake · 29/11/2006 12:20

Genius Jabber! I can legitimise spending hours on MN because I'll be b/fing! and I won't be watching crappy soaps

(ok I'll be watching crappy soaps and b'fing and Mnetting!)

Hooray!!!!!

spinasnowflake · 29/11/2006 12:22

TENS is trans(something) electronic nerve stimulation. A form of pain relief. Works by distracting you by sending little pulses into your muscles. Feels like something between being tickled and the most annoying thing in the delivery suite (after late DHs) depending on how far into labour you are!

spinasnowflake · 29/11/2006 12:23

Whoops. Late as in tardy not the other sort!

spinasnowflake · 29/11/2006 12:26

LOL jabber about the sympathy.

I let him cat nap and get some breakfast once they'd plugged my epidural in BTW

calsworld · 29/11/2006 12:27

Well, don't get too jealous too soon....after having an hours nap, the contractions seem to have stopped. I've had a shower and some lunch and there are some minor rumblings but no need for the tens at the moment so I'm saving the battery...

DH is popping out for a quick top up shopping trip and when he gets back we'll go for a walk and see if we can get things moving again - can't let 9 hours of painful contractions go no-where!

annaspanner · 29/11/2006 12:40

Jabber-thanks for making me feel better! I told my m/w I'm going to use my laptop when B/Fing and she was horrified! I can't see why not...I'm going to think about logistics today...maybe a small side table....

Well just got back from my doctor, monitoring and a basic scan and they said all is ok.No contractions but LOTS of movement(I could have told them that) and baby is 3.4kilos(pleeeez stay that weight LO!!!). I decided not to buy a pineapple on the way home as my parents arrive on Saturday but will be following your advice on induction from next week, Spina (is it the sex or the orgasm that helps?-the 2 together are not guaranteed-especially at the moment!). I?m nearly out of Raspberry tea and it?s an hours drive from here to Gibraltar (the only place I know to find it) and that?s in the opposite direction to the hospital! So I don?t dare.

Thanks for the Tens advice Calsworld-especially when your mind is on other things at the moment! AQ- so you can practice with the Tens machine from 38 weeks? If anyone has any other advice I?d be grateful-I got mine from Ebay and it has full instructions for all ailments-but not labour! I just know you stick the four pads on your lower back. The idea was that DP would be in charge of it (boys+gadgets?you know)?but has he shown any interest recently? NO! Now if it was him about to go into labour, it would be a different story!

judemum · 29/11/2006 12:48

Anna- I used a TENS machine for DS1- its quite fiddly to fix up at first as you have to get the pads in the right place on your back, so its worth a play around for an hour when you have time. My (ever efficient) mum in fact got an indelible pen and marked my back with a number of "X's" to show where to stick the pads when the time came! It can be a bit fiddly to operate at first, so if you haven't had a good look at it I would thoroughly recommend having a look beforehand as if you're anything like me you'll be far too irritable and restless to study it when you're having contractions!

jabberwocky · 29/11/2006 12:49

Yep, laptop is the only way to go. With ds1 I spent a lot of time dreaming goofily about looking at him with tender love in my eyes as I bfed. Now I know that I'm more of a plug-em-in, get-the latch-right and let's-get-on with-it kind of gal. Am wondering if it was the other kind of thinking that contributed to my bfing downfall with ds1. Perhaps expectations were a bit much?

accessorizequeen · 29/11/2006 12:56

It's all go on here, new thread by December!
From what the lady told me yesterday, tens batteries last for AGES so you should use it as much as you like cals. She recommended use only from 38 weeks, Anna, if you have backache etc, just to try it out & get used to it, plus builds endorphins?? What do I know, it's still in the glove compartment...
I am being SOOOO lazy today, I know I'm going to spend next year working my butt off so taking time out now as I won't get any for a while (well, I'm assuming). Nearly 1pm and all I've done is hang out some washing. And finished Rebus/Rankin, excellent.
can't say I'd even thought about dp not getting here, figure I'll nab my mum if she's around (she lives round the corner). Surely it won't happen that fast anyway, I have no sense of urgency about babies as was in hospital 2 days being induced before even moving to the labour suite.
LOL at spina's bringing on labour plan and bailey counting hours before MIL arrives...

dublindee · 29/11/2006 13:00

3.4 kilos is a nice weight Anna, don't think bump will weigh much more if you don't go overdue as they gain normally about a pound a week in bodyweight atm so you'll be looking around the 8lb mark or just below.

Sleep is a thing of the past for me, I was up 4 times last night. Just cannot seem to get comfy with pillows or anything, and all the running to the loo is annoying me too.

Oli how are you coping hun?

We heard from Elibean at all?

nearlythere · 29/11/2006 13:04

Wow!! I've only just stumbled across mumsnet- not entirely sure how i missed it but sounds like you lot get up to all sorts!

I'm due next Monday!!! (4th december) i'm mum to twin boys Jacob and Samuel who are 3 and this time i'm hoping for a girl!

dublindee · 29/11/2006 13:05

same here AQ - just taking it nice and easy.
No jobs to do really and feel quite justified in having a lazy day! After all only 11 days til my new baba gets here - not going overdue, I've decided it's not allowed this time!

weirdbird · 29/11/2006 13:58

Welcome nearly there, we are starting to drop babies left and right here

I think I am worried because DH works in central London and the trains are being particularly bad at the moment, it can take him up to 2 hours to get home, and he works in an office that has a no-mobile rule, so if he isn't at his desk it could take a while to track him down and I had a very fast first labour, from the first twinge to giving birth being 8 hours in total and I was only "sure" it was the real thing the last couple of hours (when we went to the hospital) and 2nd babies are meant to be faster

Don't want to be calling him home at every twinge, but at the same time dont want to leave it too late...hmmm

I have made DH give me other peoples ext numbers spina so I can track him down if he isnt at his desk.

It was different with the first one, he worked a 15 min drive away.

Loulou000 · 29/11/2006 14:00

Good luck Calsworld, hope things are progressing nicely. It's interesting to hear such a blow by blow account!

Welcome to Nearlythere!

So tired, can't sleep properly any more, moan whinge. I'm awake most of the night and then all I want to do all day is lie in bed.

OP posts:
nearlythere · 29/11/2006 14:11

Its good to hear that so many others are in the same boat! I can't believe i haven't come accros MN before- mind you i suppose copious ammounts of time on ebay searching for prams would explain it!!
I'm starting to panic about this labour- my last was so controlled because it was twins that i didn't really have a say in what went on- they told me what they wanted me to do and i did it, but i guess with a singleton you don't get so much intervention and in a way you are left to get on with it- help!! what if my body doesn't know what to do? I'm being hormonal and irrational now.

judemum · 29/11/2006 14:14

Hi Nearlythere

Any one else noticed baby not moving around so much anymore. he is moving, just seems a lot less active...trying not to worry as i guess he's just running out of room...

2 days to go before I finish work.......hurahh. Realise have over booked things though as only have 3 days to myself in amongst all the guests, before baby is due. Not good.

judemum · 29/11/2006 14:16

to be honset nearlythere, am just trying to ignore the labour bit as had a pretty arduous labour with DS1 and thinking about going through it all again is not great. However, baby has to come out so decided best policy is to not think about it . Ignorance along with a good measure of panic and frantic reading of relevant books during labour, thats my motto

dublindee · 29/11/2006 14:18

Weirdbird get him to speak to his supervisor about the no mobile rule. They can lift it for a call of this importance surely?
Especially if he agrees to have the phone on silent and only use it for your call - no taking the p@

dublindee · 29/11/2006 14:22

Judemum - I wish! Bump is def moving just as much but think he's either hyper or just uncomfortable.
Welcome Nearlythere - It's not fair that you join this thread and you're due before me

I want my baby NOW!

castlesintheair · 29/11/2006 14:34

Can someone tell me what "the show" is like pur-lease?!

WB, which hospital are you booked into or are you home-birthing? Can your DH put his mobile on no ring but vibrate alert. That's what my DH does ... though he still never checks or replies, except when he wants something It takes him effing ages to get home from central London too & we are only in Richmond. Only a 15 minute drive to Kingston through the park though (depending on how many deer are in the road). I spoke to 2 people today who drove themselves there after going into labour! Great, I am really looking forward to that. DM is 3 hours away & MIL who is coming to look after DCs is in Greece until Tuesday so I'm basically f***ed if anything happens before Wednesday!

Welcome nearlythere!

No news from Elibean yet. I guess she's having a long stay in hospital but I am looking forward to hearing from her ...

Olihan · 29/11/2006 14:44

Hello nearlythere!

Cals, those contractions last night are bound to have done something. I had a false labour with dd which was gutting but meant I was 3cms dilated at 40 weeks - so not that bad really!

Spina, globby bits are most likely to be the leftovers from what you're getting up to with dh!! It caught me out last time too, but a show is really different - you'll know it as soon as you see it!

Anna, even if you go overdue your baby won't gain much more weight because the placenta becomes less efficient, so it's not going to pile it on! Sexwise, if you can manage both then it's better I think . Semen contains prostaglandins which soften the cervix (although I was told by my mw that you need to have sex 3 times a day to get a decent amount in the right area . Orgasms stimulate the uterus so can encourage contractions, but they can be DIY orgasms too!!

If anyone is really interested, apparently ORAL prostaglandins are more effective at getting things moving. Don't ask me why or how, I suspect it's a rumour put about by the gender who would most benefit from it but if you're brave enough to try it, you deserve a medal .

Can you spot that I've been late twice and have read a lot on DIY induction methods ?

My jobs today, when I've finished on here, is to phone the NCT and get some bf support lined up so I don't have to rely on mws and hvs again, and to wash all the newborn clothes. We've decided to pack the same babygro that ds and dd wore as soon as they were born, then take a couple of pink and a couple of blue ones for after it's had a bath. I'm hoping to have a 6 hour discharge this time so I'm packing very light - 1 bag for labour, baby and post-birth!

My mw came to talk through my birth plan today, which was fine, having done it twice and had most eventualities, including prep for an ecs there wasn't much more she could tell me! The only thing she did go through, which concerned me slightly, was the procedure for an emergency homebirth. As dd was so quick I think they're worried I won't make it to the hospital - eek! Hopefully now she's been through it it won't happen! The good news is, baby has shifted out of back to back and is now LOA and is 2/5 engaged. No doubt it'll bounce back out again but it's progress with no effort on my part!

WB, could your dh get a taxi back if it does go off really quickly? My mw said today that if there's any doubt in your mind that you'll make it to the hospital in time, phone for an ambulance, especially 2nd/3rd time around. No trying to drive yourself in full blown labour!! Would your dh's work not let him have his mobile on silent once you're over 40 weeks?

BM, I know someone who swears she went into labour after scrubbing her kitchen floor on her hands and knees - personally it seemed like too much hard work so I've never tried it. Trampoline sounds like a good idea though, might try that in the next couple of weeks.

Anyone who's taking raspberry leaf tea TABLETS, how many do you take? I only used the tea last time which did nothing but the tablets are supposed to be more effective aren't they?

Magnolia, if you're not about tonight, GOOD LUCK tomorrow and send Mr Magnolia on here ASAP to let us all know!

Olihan · 29/11/2006 14:50

Castles, a show is like thick phlegmy stuff that's pale yellow/green and bloodstreaked, a bit like a really disgusting snot. Mine came out whenever I went to the loo and wiped myself, it goes all stringy, like egg white. It is quite obvious when it happens but it may not come away until you're in labour and you'll never see it.

satinshoes · 29/11/2006 14:51

I didnt have a show with DD. Didnt even notice my waters had broke

nearlythere · 29/11/2006 15:03

hi dublindee and apologies- i would have joined sooner but spent too much time surfing the baby shoping sites instead!! I'm pretty much decided that the best course of action is to stick my head firmly in the sand deny all knowledge of labour! DH is still very suspicious of a home water birth- we were never given the option last time so he's not too keen and thinks it may be a new 'hippy' way of doing it! i'm tempted to lock him in the shed and get on with things on my own!!
