Is anyone here asking for strep b test at 36 weeks?

Fattycow · 23/05/2015 09:23

nurse, you have to be on a pc/laptop to do your stats. The link is in the top post of the thread!

la, I haven't had a strep b test. They don't normally do them over here, as the number of women carrying it over here is quite low. Any indications that you are carrying it?

Aretepetite · 23/05/2015 11:22

Charliej86 · 23/05/2015 11:41

Fun and games, off to urgent care with my niece today (she 16,lives with us) she's fallen over n hurt her foot/ankle. But most important for her to get her nails done first haha.

NurseP · 23/05/2015 12:13

Thanks! Just don't want them to jeep sending me away and then end up ms sing a dose. My friend had her first baby in about 5 hours start to finish so not all first babies take ages do they? Also know a baby who was very poorly with strep b so all a bit of a worry. X

Charliej86 · 23/05/2015 15:11

Well niece has broken her foot.

I know this isn't bump/baby related but I've actually liked having something else to think about for the morning.

WiIdfire · 23/05/2015 17:23

Lalalaaa - I will be sending off for a private GBS test in a week or so. It's not offered on the NHS, and the one that is has a 50% false negative rate which is too high for me.

NurseP · 23/05/2015 17:35

I had no indication at all about the strep b. Came back in a routine wee sample then later on a swab I had taken when was having a few bleeds ( not strep related) .

MrsFbabyNo1 · 23/05/2015 17:39

Kelz, fairly new to mumsnet (ok bout a yr now so not really) but I think marking place means just writing anything as then if you check your 'I'm on' section it will bring up and threads you've written on. If it's been a while since you last wrote on a thread you 'drop / fell off' and it won't be in your I'm on section anymore. hope that helps?!

You sound like you've had a fairly dramatic day Charlie, hope your niece recovers well. Sounds like she'll be hobbling about for a while!

lala, nope must not have been me I'm in middle earth (top Warwickshire/East staffs/West Leics, south derby's way - near the 4 counties joiny bit)!

MrsFbabyNo1 · 23/05/2015 17:43

Yep grp b strep not available on NHS only if pay for test privately. The reason for this is because the national expert screening committee have assessed the evidence and do not currently recommend it for all pregnant women (they continue to look into it so one day it might be) some info here:
www.screening.nhs.uk/groupbstreptococcus

Basically any screening test is done on 'apparently healthy' people to determine a 'risk' (not a diagnosis) and the screening tests are never 100% spot on - so it is always a fine balance of possible benefits vs harms (I.e. Over treatment which may have untoward consequences).

Not to say people shouldn't pay to have it done if they want (especially if you're normally very risk adverse and want to cover all bases) but ask private provider to inform you fully of all possible benefits and harms so you're making an informed decision. It's also the false positives that cause harms too - worry, stress, over treatment when it's not really needed etc.

Also some more NHS info here:
www.nhs.uk/chq/pages/2037.aspx?categoryid=54

Hope that helps...

broodylicious · 23/05/2015 17:44

You're near me then mrsf! I'm leics.

WiIdfire · 23/05/2015 21:45

Yes - didnt mention that the reason I want to test for GBS is because I was positive during a previous pregnancy which makes my chance of carrying it now about 40%.

LaLaLaaaa · 23/05/2015 21:52

Thank you all - I've got the info about private test but my midwife was quite scornful of it when I asked. She made me feel neurotic for considering it.

Going to read up and have a think

Fattycow · 23/05/2015 22:26

So who wants to see my swollen feet?

OP posts:
Charliej86 · 23/05/2015 22:39

Mrsf it's not been too bad, it was self inflicted. She was drunk, (we don't say she can but we don't say she can't. We've found a little bit of freedom has calmed her behaviour down.) she fell over. Didn't think it was anything but she's got 4-6 weeks in plaster.
We've got the easy one tho, she's just been told her cousin has broken her neck. Fingers crossed for her.

Baby wise today everything is good.

Fattycow · 23/05/2015 22:55

Oh god, the poor girl! I hope she will recover from the broken neck! And of course I hope the broken foot heals quickly as well.

wildfire usually if you have tested positive for it once you should be treated for it anyway as it means you are a carrier.

jmojo · 24/05/2015 01:51

Gaaa anoying phone! Double post!

WiIdfire · 24/05/2015 06:15

Yes some hospitals will, but mine doesn't treat unless positive during THIS pregnancy, due to the transient nature of the bug. So says my midwife. Irritatingly, my local hospital doesnt do bith centre 'tours' so I cant ask them! Anyway the leaflet they gave me agrees that if I dont retest I wont be treated in my current situation, so I'll do it to get a more uptodate result.

Stinkylinky · 24/05/2015 08:47

Congratulations Zampa on the birth of your baby girl. Sending all my love and positive vibes your way xxx

I've not been on here in ages as I struggle to keep up! I hope everyone is doing well.

I'm now 33+5 and I'm on annual leave, mat leave to follow straight after, I just had loads of holiday to take and couldn't add it on the end of my mat leave. Very glad to have finished work as I was really starting to struggle.

To the previous poster who mentioned their increase in discharge, I am having the same here. Also having regular BH then last night was very sick and had an upset tummy, could this be a sign of pre labour? I'm sure the baby will arrive before his due date.

I've added a picture of my bump which makes me laugh as it looks like a giant boob!

Fleurchamp · 24/05/2015 09:52

Just popping in to message zampa hope your little lady is doing better now. Sending you lots of love and good wishes.

32 weeks here and still feeling pretty good although I do enjoy an afternoon nap!

Interested to hear about strep b discussion. I am thinking about doing a private test but will the NHS take the result seriously? If so, is it true you will be hooked up to iv antibiotics during labour?
