Welcome to all the lurkers! And congratulations Deladion.

I would say not to worry about smells. As others have said a tightfitting lid is sufficient over two days and it doesn't need to be a large bucket a 10 gallon one was big enough and two days worth of washables do not smell like a week's worth of disposables and nor do they take up as much space.

llama how do you know it's hiccups? I can't tell whether movements I feel are kicks, punches or just rolling around. Wish I could!

DeladionInch · 31/05/2015 18:28

envious think I've got about 14 and will back up with sposie pads depending on washing situation (dh (squee!) is very good but the early days might be manic)

Think the worst poonami we ever had took 5 cloth wipes? That was a tummy bug one. It's rare to use more than 2. Sposies would have been well over half a pack.

Sposie liners for weaning and teething poo, most just flick into the loo or wipe off with bog roll before washing.

My nappy bin cost £4 in Wilko, it's just a plastic kitchen bin. Lives in the bathroom. Stick a sanitary towel to the lid and drop your oil onto that, and as I say keep it clean. We wash every 5 days or so now it's only for sleep and no stinks although we rarely get a poo nappy either. Bf poo is water soluble

DeladionInch · 31/05/2015 18:29

Hiccups can only be hiccups BTW, ds1's used to wake dh in the night!

sauvblanc21 · 31/05/2015 18:35

While we're on washable nappies - which we're definitely planning to use (albeit a bit nervously as first timers) - I've found this offer which sends you several different brands to try and then you can send them all back after a trial. Only costs £10 if you send them all back - then I'll buy the brand I liked best. Does that sound like a good plan? What brands have you ladies found are best? Xx

Congratulations Deladion!

Welcome new people.

Thanks everyone for all the information on GTT, now I know I've not missed anything.

My bump is harder than my usual tummy and also goes rock solid depending on how baby is lying. I think it must stick it's bum in the air or something! It moves position a lot, but likes lying just left of centre. Can now see kicks from the outside if baby is positioned right which I love.

I'm team yellow and don't have an inclination either way. It's fun to hear what people guess.

It amazes me that people say such insensitive things about the gender of number 2 (this is my first so all that to come) Even if they think it, why they can't see saying it is so rude I can't understand.

DeladionInch · 31/05/2015 20:19

sauv brilliant plan, or see if there's a library near you www.greatbritishnappyhunt.co.uk/nappy_libraries.html

I'll be going fully woolly with a few tj's pockets, but we're used to how to fit them iyswim. For the early days, a prefold or muslin laid in a wrap is all you want to tide you over till btp (birth to potty) fit at about 8-9lb. Velcro is definitely easier to get a good fit with, ds1 spent so long between popper settings I ditched the pockets for him fairly early.

You need different things from day and night nappies, most successful users have separate systems for each. Or just use a sposie at night and cloth during the day to get used to things - like feeding, one doesn't cancel out the other Wink

I've been telling people the ds1 is thrilled to be getting a little brother, that forestalls any stupid remarks!

sauvblanc21 · 31/05/2015 20:29

Thanks Deladion - all advice is very welcome, there seem to be sooo many options! Yes we're gonna buy a few packs of disposables too until we get the hang of things! Xx

If you have a library nearby then someone will talk you through your options, show you how to use them, hire or loan you a kit etc :)

MummyBexta · 31/05/2015 21:02

Hiccups sound lovely! I love feeling baby move about. I have low lying placenta - has anyone found that affects feeling baby's movements?

Meinthecorner · 31/05/2015 21:30

Sauvblanc The nappy lady website is very helpful with choices and she does a questionnaire to help match you with nappies. Her service is excellent too.

On a different topic are there any crafty mums out there knitting, crocheting or sewing anything for the baby? I am crocheting a blanket but think I may have bitten off more thanI can chew!

MummyBexta · 31/05/2015 21:45

Meinthecorner I plan to make some crafty bits and pieces for our baby's room but don't know how to crochet or knit so will be more along the lines of cutting, gluing etc! Do you use Pinterest website/app? There are some great ideas on there :)

ditzzy · 31/05/2015 21:46

MummyBexta I have a low lying placenta and definitely think it makes movements less predictable! She seems to move around a lot and when she's fairly high up (or reaching an arm or leg higher up) I can feel lots of wriggling and then she seems to sink lower down again for a while and I feel nothing at all. I've found that drumming my fingers quite high up usually attracts her attention and she'll wiggle to where I can feel her again Grin

ARV1981 · 31/05/2015 22:05

I started a quilt... planning on finishing it while on maternity leave.

My sister has made three gorgeous rattle toys - a Fox, panda and owl. She also knitted some booties.

My MiL is knitting a tiger suit (soooooooo cute!) And a baby blanket.

DeladionInch · 31/05/2015 22:11

Nappy covers, booties and have a little fox jumper on the hook. Debating whether to give the hold an eyelash wool edge or if it would be a choking hazard...

Boodlymummy · 31/05/2015 23:21

Going to chop up my (soft vintage lace) wedding dress to make a special shawl, and I am tempted to try knitting a little yellow cardigan with red buttons, though I've never knitted more than half a wonky scarf before...

Treaclepie19 · 01/06/2015 10:25

Just lost my place again!

Thanks for the bump thoughts. I can't at all tell where Bean is lying (apart from once, where I think I felt the head) but I am very tall (over 6ft) and quite well padded so perhaps that's not surprising. I can feel her moving around a lot though. (Roadworks have woken her up and she's thumping back like an angry neighbour with a broom.)

I knit a lot anyway, so have been making little bits for my hope chest since we started seriously talking about having a baby soonish. My wishlist of things to knit that I have yarn for is now longer than the # of weeks until EDD, oops!

There are lots of lovely, easy, free patterns to knit & crochet on Ravelry.com (you have to sign up but it's free, no spam and well worth it). If you use the advanced search you can narrow it down to, e.g. free + knitting + newborn + cardigan + easy

CommanderShepard · 01/06/2015 10:51

I've got umpteen projects on the needles/hook - I love knitting newborn stuff as it works up so fast! Grin Also got curtains to make for DD's "sister room" as she calls it and new nursery curtains. Got my GTT this Friday so perfect time to crack on with knitting while I wait.

My doppler scan last week showed that she's currently breech which explains why all the movement is so low down. 25 weeks today, so obviously she's got plenty of time to turn, but we've had a little word about how mummy really wants a VBAC and so unlike her elder sister she really should behave herself Grin

Maths88 · 01/06/2015 17:11

Wish I was even remotely crafty and creative!

Just got home from my first day back at work after half term and I am fit for nothing. I only have 6 and a half weeks to go until the summer holidays but I literally have no idea how I am going to survive. I have an hour and a half commute each way to work and whilst I can sit down when I have free periods, it would be fair on the kids if I spent the lessons sat down. I am so tired after just one day that I just don't know what to do!

Anyone else feeling like this?

MummyBexta · 01/06/2015 19:03

Maths88 I am a primary teacher and have come home so tired today. At work I also felt funny getting up and down on little chairs all day. Just keep thinking in my head at least we have the summer hols coming up. I also need to make sure I am drinking and snacking enough at work as I tend to get so busy I forget to drink!

Jessica32 · 01/06/2015 20:32

I can't knit sadly but my mum made me a beautiful cashmere blanket and a matching hat with what was left. She gave it to me in mothers day as a 'mother to be' present. It was a complete surprise, I cried!

Meinthecorner · 01/06/2015 20:39

Wow I love all the sound of all the cute little things bejng knitted up. I have a Debbie Bliss baby book which I bought when my friends started having babies a few years ago so I am going to try and work my way through a few things in there once I finish this epic blanket. I have some beautiful cream merino that I bought in New Zealand 6 years ago on the off chance we would have kids. Ds got a blanket out of it but I am thinking jumpers and cardis for this one.
I don’t use pinterest that would be very dangerous!
