Hello Junebugs....
I have updated the Facebook group but had not checked in with Mumsnet for a while. So wanted to update this thread, bring an original Junebug.
I am a mummy! It all happened rather quickly. Austin Philip Pegg was born on Monday 27 April at 7.15pm by EMCS.
My birth story is as follows. I had been on pre-eclampsia 'watch' for a while. Blood pressure had slowly been rising for weeks. The midwife sent me into hospital at the beginning of last week because it had got to an unacceptable level. They kept me in for the day but then sent me home. The following day, I just got steadily worse. Felt like death. Had headache I couldn't get rid of, was knackered and got really bad epigastric pain and pain in my right shoulder. I had also swollen up like a balloon. I knew something was not at all right so rang the maternity ward and went back into hospital last Thursday. They kept me in and monitored me for days - My blood pressure was yoyoing but I just generally got steadily worse. On Sunday they started getting interested in my gastric pain/shoulder pain and my liver enzyme levels which were increasing. They had put the gastric pain largely down to indigestion before as this is not unusual in normal pregnancies.
After a lot of blood tests, on Monday evening this week they diagnosed HELLP, the consultant came to see me and within an hour of diagnosis, I was prepped for surgery and told that my organs were failing. Basically they had to act fast. They put me under a general aneasthetic and operated. Next thing I knew I was being woken up and being told I was a Mum.
So it was a bit of a whirlwind....and I have spent the last few days being v fearfully monitored whilst my condition improves...I am feeling much better today suddenly after a ropey week so hoping that it is upwards from here.
Brilliantly though, little Austin is a complete star and doing extremely well which does make it all worthwhile. He was just shy of 5lbs when born (and he was 33 weeks +6 when he was born so he was a good weight). He is in neonatal and doing amazing. He has not needed any help breathing and it is just feeding that he needs help with. I am biased obviously, but he is completely adorable.
The neonatal people are all amazing and he is having the best possible care whilst I recover. I have now managed to have cuddles with him and change him too.
I am so looking forward to when we can all go home as a new little family. Despite a traumatic and rather shocking week, I feel blessed that little Austin is doing so well, I am ok and that my amazing husband has managed to cope with it all too.
I hope you are all well Junebugs. Best of luck for all you people arrivals. We have the best times ahead of ourselves
