Hello ladies, shyly hoping to join you. Congratulations to you all, I am looking forward to getting to know you. Just got a BFP this morning and it has come as total shock, a wonderful one though as I have always wanted a fourth child but my DH couldn´t have been more clear about not wanting another, I am very nervous about having the conversation with him and may leave it a few days until I feel less stunned by it all. Pregnancy is tricky for me because I have a blood clotting disorder so I have to start taking aspirin and injecting heparin as soon as it is established that the baby is in the right place so I still have lots of hoops to jump through. My DD is 11 December.

Silly question maybe, but what makes a good maternity unit vs a bad one???

shinysparklythings · 06/04/2015 12:43

Welcome mrs

Thanks everyone, that's reassuring.

I don't think I'll get a choice in maternity units. I live in a city but I'm fairly sure there is only one and the next nearest would be almost an hour away.
I wouldn't want to risk it based on December due date and what the weather might be like...

ineedsomeinspiration · 06/04/2015 12:46

I would say, staffing levels, facilities such as midwife led units, birthing pools etc, c section rates, cleanliness, feeling comfortable there.
I have two to chose from, one half an hour away where I gave birth last time and one about 40 mins away which I haven't been to.i am thinking of having a home birth this time though all being well.
Anyone else sneakily looking at baby bits? I know it's so early but can't help myself. Saw a day old newborn today made me go all gooey.

ThePug · 06/04/2015 12:54

Just been googling reviews for my local hospital maternity unit. Apparently it is one of the largest in the country and most reviews seem very positive so I'm happy with that.

As I will be under the care of my diabetes consultant who I already see at the hospital, I don't think I'd want to choose anywhere else anyway.

If my local hospital had a really bad reputation, I'd probably go for one further away if I was sure I had plans in place for how I'd get there and different routes mapped out in case of gridlock traffic etc!

Looking forward to my GP appointment tomorrow morning when I get to tell a real live person other than DH that I'm pregnant Grin

alpha as far as I know, if you've had IVF you get an early scan to rule out ectopic.

I'm going to try and see my GP this week to get the ball rolling, even though I'm sure it will bring back bad memories. Last time I went through all the blood tests etc at the booking in appointment, only to miscarry two weeks later...

alphabook · 06/04/2015 14:51

Welcome MrsMc.

I haven't had IVF, I've had ovulation induction with Clomid but thanks, that's useful to know and I hope it'll be the same.

I'm excited to tell a real live person too, even if it is just my consultant's secretary!

alphabook · 06/04/2015 15:00

HellsBells you can read the CQC report for your local hospital with a maternity unit - my local hospital is in special measures but according to the report the maternity unit is doing ok.

MrsMcJnr · 06/04/2015 15:03

Thank you for the welcome ladies. It always feels such a long time between your booking in and the first scan. I don't live in the UK anymore but when I did, we had an early pregnany unit at my local hospital which could give you reassurance scans if you have had previous experiences that make up anxious or for medical reasons like mine, needing to know the baby is not ectopic before starting medication. I would have thought using clomid might entitle you to one on the basis of the high chance of multiples Alphabook. Request an early scan at your GP appointmen. You might just get one

MrsMcJnr · 06/04/2015 15:09

Metalhead - i can empathise with your fear, we lost our first baby quite late on and the next time round i was terrified i would jinx the pregnany by being too hopeful and it spoilt so many occasions throughtout that should have been joyful ones. When i was pregnant with my daughter i was adamant that i was going to enjoy every second and i did.

emmhul1982 · 06/04/2015 17:27

Hi All,

so took a pregnancy test last Tuesday and got positive ?? we think i am around 4 weeks gone but as I havent had a period since December its anyones guess! much a shock after 18 months trying for our first DS who is 4 in may!

new to all this so forgive me for the lack of acronyms! lol!

em xxxxx

toadierocks · 06/04/2015 18:09

Hiya MrsMcJrn and Emm

I've added you both to our stats Grin

Totally get your fears metal - I'm not booking my early scan until 6 weeks for that very reason, I've got all my fingers and toes crossed for sticky beans all round! Haven't booked my GP's yet as I can self-refer to my maternity ward.

WFYWGBY if you trust the maternity hospital which is further away, I would go back to that one, I was in the same situ with DD, the hosp nearest to us (10mins) was awful and I heard nothing but horror stories so we changed doctors to fall into the catchment area of a great hosp, about 40 mins away, so pleased we did as the care was amazing and the MW's super! I'll be going back there although I'd really like a home birth this time so we'll see..... but stick with what you know I reckon!

Sorry to hear about your loss MrsMc. I'm trying very hard to positive, and this pregnancy has got off to a much better start, but the fear is still always there in the background. I think if you've suffered a loss it just takes away the innocence of assuming pregnancy = baby.

MoreCakeMoreCake · 06/04/2015 20:08

Hello, can I join? Got a BFP this morning - this will be DC2. Due around 14 Dec - eek!
Bittersweet news as we lost our niece to cot death at 8months last year, so hadn't been ready to try for another DC for a while. Trying to figure out how I'll tell my DSis when the time comes....
Congrats all! Christmas babies!

Just popping in to say alpha I got pg on clomid for ds1 and had a 7 week scan - confident you should be all good Smile

megarobotdiscoparty · 06/04/2015 20:55

Sparkle this was me too last time...told them lmp date and my dd was then changed at my 12 week scan when they could take proper measurements. It's all a bit vague til then! I would be honest, I imagine they'll have had the same situation before lots anyway. Lots of us ladies have wonky cycles!

megarobotdiscoparty · 06/04/2015 20:58

I am joining in cautiously. BFP today, dd around 14 Dec. This will be DC#2... DS1 nearly 2. Got pg on a month break from fertility treatment...In total shock. Will believe it when it comes out! Hi everyone and tentative congrats all round....

toadierocks · 06/04/2015 21:20

Hiya mega congratz on the BFP! I'll add you to the stats Grin

withalittlesparkle hmmmm I see your dilemma, Until the 12 week scan it will always be an estimated due date and once the measurements are on the system it becomes the 'official' DD.

I have the same problem, my last monthly period was the 28th Feb but I know I ov'd on the 16th March as I used OPK so I know I'm 5 weeks today, however when they ask me when my LMP was I'll say the 2nd March (so it's a 28 day cycle) as then there is no way they can get it wrong when they use the predictor wheel. That's just IMO. Like I said I can estimate that my DD will be the 7th Dec, however it will prob change by a few days either way on the 12 week scan. Do you know when you ovulated?

With DD I was convinced I was due on 12th March as I knew when we'd dtd and after that my DH went to the states but on the 12 week they pushed it back to the 16th so I guess I must have had a later fertilization/implantation date than I thought..... if that makes sense...... either way I went nearly two weeks overdue! :)

Thanks and welcome Mega, I'm pleased to hear that. Congrats on getting pg without treatment, you must have been so shocked!

Welcome to the rest of today's December newbies!

Withalittlesparkle I would just tell them your LMP and bear in mind that it won't be accurate until your 12 week scan. My EDD based on LMP is the 6th, but my EDD based on ovulation is the 9th (I'm going with the latter for the moment!)

Metalhead · 06/04/2015 21:44

I'd just tell them your LMP date unless it was a mega-long cycle, they will adjust your due date according to the 12 week scan.

Does anyone else find their boobs are much more sore at night? Mine aren't too bad during the day, but when I take my bra off before bed and during the night they really hurt! Weird...

ThePug · 06/04/2015 21:47

Congrats to all the new BFPs joining us - welcome!

toadie we are almost exactly in sync; my LMP was 28th Feb but I ov'd on 17th March. Pretty sure I implanted on 25th. I'm going to tell my Dr all these dates and they can decide whatever EDD they want for now, but I won't take too much notice until the 12 week scan.

I just had a shower and spent most of the time covering my boobs with one arm as the water jets were hurting my nipples - owww! It was quite funny though.

I'm also starting to get panicy about a work trip I have to go on to Canada in 2.5 weeks time. What if I'm getting really sick by then? What if something goes wrong when I'm away? What if the longhaul flying does cause issues? Aaaaargh wish I could get out of it but I'm meant to be delivering a presentation at a big conference (again, what if I'm getting sick by then - it'll be horrific!)
