btw - ds is 18 mths old - is it too early to start potty training?

Smole · 01/11/2006 12:19

Hi all. I saw my consultant yesterday. All I got was a lecture on downs syndrome. I don't think he agreed with my decision to wait until the 21 week scan. But tough it's mine and DH decision not his. He made me so angry. He was talking as if it was a certainty that we were going to have a downs child Unfortunately I have to go back and see him after my scan on 3rd December. I can see lecture part 2 coming my way.

pesha · 01/11/2006 12:22

Would definitely wait til they are ready for potty training. When dd was about ready for potty training i was living in b an b so couldnt do it but it meant when i did do it she was more than ready and it was soo easy, clean and dry in the day with no accidents in just a matter of days then nights followed couple months afterwards when I caught up with her and stopped putting nappies on routinely! (Had just had ds so was running on auto pilot!)

Ds was harder and would not do poos without a nappy on so after talking to hv i let him have nappies on for poos and after a few days he just started doing poos on potty when noone was around (he WILL NOT poo whilst being watched!!) then it stopped and he went back to nappies for poos for a while and then that stopped again and now everything goes on the toilet with no problems.

I think it depends completely on the individual dc but if they're getting at all upset about it i would let them do it their way, well it worked with my ds anyway

Talking about dcs playing with tampons when dd was not long turned 2 we were living in a flat in a converted church, big stained glass windows, high ceilings and very posh! I was about 3/4 months pg with ds. While i was busy dd found a box of tampons and unwrapped them all and dropped them out her window. As i was bending over frantically picking up all these tampons one of my (very good looking male) neighbours walked past, as if crazy woman picking up tampons wasnt bad enough it was then i realised i was wearing pre pg trousers that didnt really fit anymore so i was crazy woman picking up tampons showing large amounts of arse crack

We moved shortly afterwards!!

pesha · 01/11/2006 12:25

And Happy birthday for yesterday katy!!!

Bramshott · 01/11/2006 12:38

at your tampon story Pesha! I caught DD when she was about 18 months, sitting on the floor and trying to post one into her nappy .

Smole - your consultant sounds like the worst sort, poor you! How dare he presume to lecture you on the decisions you have made, and nodoubt carefully considered .

OP posts:
pesha · 01/11/2006 13:02

Bramshott meant say thank you for soup recipe but went on so long bout potty training and tampons i forgot about anything else! I made a sort of combination of your recipe and others on the other thread, basically picked out the bits i had and i like from all recipes and made what i thought was a lovely soup but neither of the dcs liked but just means more for me

And thank you for everyone saying nice things. Have now decided if i get a part time job i come off income support and get wftc and help with childcare (which i wouldnt if dp moves in) and if i cant work for some reason i will get help to make sure we have enough to live on even if it means going back on IS temporarily. But the main thing is if im not on IS its none of their business whether dp lives here or not. Ill be working 20 hours a week for not much more than i get now, worked it out last year at jobcentre an i would have been about £20 a wk better off for working 20 hrs but then have to take free prescriptions, school meals and milk off that which makes it hardly worth it but dds dad has been paying csa for last few months so i would get that on top which is £200 a month (only get £40 of it at mo) so actually could work out to be a good thing. Just have to find someone who wants to give a job to a pregnant lady now.

oooggs · 01/11/2006 13:32

Wow this gets big quick. Hard to follow and I was only on yesterday.

Balated happy birthday to Katy - hope you enjoyed yourself.

Thanks Captain Dippy - glad to be back 'trying' to follow the thread too.

1B3 - when are you due? How are you feeling? Fill me in I could do with a 'twin mummy to be buddy!!'

Dh was away and ds asleep last night and I sat in the study (at back of the house) eating all the choc I had bought for the treaters!!!!!

Take Care xx

1becomes3 · 01/11/2006 16:52

hello ladies, have had a much better day today.

I will start with happy b-day for yesterday katy.

emmymummy- your DD is very cute, she has the same blonde curls as my DD.

CFK- congrats on your mw appointment

ooogs- is it ture about the 37 weeks full term for twins, I don't know what type of birth you are having. I have to have a c-section, which I am pleased about. Had a HORRIBLE birth with DD and had a emergency c-section then so I have to have this one now, because of complications and being high risk. Does that mean it will be at 37 weeks?
I am due on the 24th april.
when r u due?

Anyway have had a fantastic appointment with my consultant today, he seems like a very likeable person. saw my 2 babies on the monitor they were both wriggling around waving and mooning for us.
It is not our hospitals policy to tell you the sex of the babies, but I thought I would ask just incase and..........................................
there is a pink and a blue in there!!! YEA
the consultant had such a lovely way of putting it he said there's the "dick" and that one has a "hamburger" (obviously you can all see why I like him)
even though it is still only 15 weeks he is pretty sure that is what they are, will 100% know when I go back for my 26week appointment with him.

CornflakeKid · 01/11/2006 17:01

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh congrats 1becomes3 - pmsl at hamburger! May not be able to eat one ever again without choking (thats a real hamburger by the way! blush)

Greengirlforever · 01/11/2006 17:14

Wow - 1becomes3 - how fantastic to have one of each, and a consultant with a real sense of humour!!!

Well done.

Ditto with CFK about the hamburger tho'...

Bugmum · 01/11/2006 17:46

GGF - guess that's ruled out ditching your DH for your BF, then Ooh, how rude! Sorry Cornflake started it, Miss.

1becomes3 - How gorgeous to have one of each! And that will really help with your DD not feeling so left out, as she can have a special 'sister' bond with one twin, while the other can be her baby brother, iyswim.

The idiot nurse who didn't label my blood ALSO didn't fill in the form properly, AND she'd just copied my starting pregnancy weight down rather than weigh me, which actually matters, apparently. Luckily, the drop-in blood place at the hospital was lovely and sorted everything, but the nurses there were clearly

twinkle183 · 01/11/2006 18:36

Hi all!!

Am still waiting for blood results to come back!!

Hope all consultants aren't like yours Smole! You would think that he would respect your decision!

I think that you girls are right about the potty training thing... think I will just wait until he is ready! But I do wonder whether I will know when that is as he is my first

Just finished some beautiful shephards pie with cheese on top and of course some veg too... Is anyone finding that at times they feel really dehydrated??? Can't stop drinking water at work, go through about 12 glasses...

Hope everyone is well!!!

Take care - not long until 20wk scan now

17+4

doobydoo · 01/11/2006 19:34

Hi All
Like others on here by the time i have read things i have forgotten what iwanted to say.Great to hear how you are all doing and welcome to any new peeps[tho not so new mow]
Emmymummy you dd is beautiful.
My dp away this week and this weekend and next but i don't feel as sick anymore.Just the odd, random retch.
Having to get used to driving in the dark[eek].
Take care all.

Katy44 · 01/11/2006 19:59

twinkle183 hope everything goes well with your blood test results, when are you expecting them?
I've also found that I'm drinking loads of water ... was a bit worried that it was a problem so glad to know others are doing it too!

runnyhabbit · 01/11/2006 20:02

happy birthday katy. (meant to say it earlier, but boss kept walking by my desk )

1b3 - great news about your flavours! never been refered to a consultant myself, but its reassuring to know there are some nice ones out there.

emmymummy - agree with the others - your dd is very cute.

the weather was lovely here in Wales today - really cold, but the sun was out all day, so very bright - just how autumn/winter should be.

have a nice night everyone

x

CaptainDippy · 01/11/2006 20:29

I'm drinking like a fish atm - and it is v.good for you, so do not worry!

Fab news about the flavours 1B3 - Still PMSL @ "hamburger" - that's halrious!!

I'd say - give it a go with the potty training Twinkle - You've got nothing to lose. Your DS is the same age as my DD and she wasn't remotely interested in potties / toilets 4 days ago and now she is weeing in them everytime - It was the Big Girl, Grown-Up pants that did the trick I think - definitely agree with what everyone said about waiting til DD/DS is ready, but no harm giving it a go IMHO. Runny - I'd say 18 months was too young, but depends on child, I guess - no harm in leaving a few potties round the place to get him used to the idea though!

Smole - @ your Consultant - How dare he/she!!!!!!!!? It is your decision - - I am just speechless at how you were treated - Stick to your guns, honey!!!!

Tired, going to bed soon ......

nuttygirl · 01/11/2006 20:44

Having a few probs with my internet today, but have finally managed to get on here. Yay!

1b3 - wow 1 of each, I'm so pleased for you

Trying to stay awake until DH gets home. It took him almost 5 hrs to get to London this morning and he didn't leave til 6pm so it could be rather late when he gets back.

Well think I'm off to write to my great aunt, she's 96 and not very well at the mo so I'm hoping it'll cheer her up.

WestCountryLass · 01/11/2006 20:50

Hi everyone

I'm back from Corfu, had a lovel break and even managed to see my friend who is a nurse on a cruise ship! I haven't seen her for 2 years as we both had other things on when she had leave and yet we are in Corfu at the same time. So we spent the day on her cruise ship getting the VIP treatment

I have tried to catch up on this thread but there have been loads of posts in the past 10 days! I am feeling much better and no reoccurrence of bleeding so that is reassurring, I am getting lots of flutters and some really strong kicks which catch my breath as they are very random and catch me unawares.

Anyway, thats my news!

stressedlady · 01/11/2006 20:59

has everyone put their details on the stats thread?
EllieK

weeonion · 01/11/2006 21:29

oh that made me looking at the stats thread. duchesse is the last name on there

god this is a fast thread! love it when there is loads to read about tho'!
hope you are all having a great evening - its so autumnly out there! we are trying to plan our NYE - really would love to go away to get a bronzed bump!

was talking to my mum earlier - it was lovely. i think my pg has made it easier to talk about other things in life.

stressedlady · 01/11/2006 22:21

well, with my notebook in hand i'm ready!!!!

had a mw appt today, v boring, heard baby but no measurements taken or anything. can't make appts in advance, can only ring up a week before and they don't do booked times, you just get the next avaiable one when you call so i end up having to go at really inconvenient times. when i had ds there was a group of 3 mw's, now my srgery has joined a different group so i get any one of 8, haven't seen the same one twice yet. hardly helps build confidence, and they want me to have a home birth!!!?????!!!

have found freecycling myself, looks like a great scheme, if you haven't searched for it yet then do!

SoL my ds is fab at amusing himself most of the time, but that makes me feel like a bad mum too, if i paid more attenton to him he wouldn't have learn to play on his own so well!

CD can't believe you found the energy to be out til 12!!!! maybe there's hope for me yet! tho maybe ths could explain why you're on your 3rd pg and still don't know the ropes! x

on the tampons stories, I normally use Tampax Compak, they used to have an advert where a guy thought they were sweets, well, ds has brought this to life, everytime he finds one he asks if he can have the sweetie please!

Smole at your consultant, give them an office and they think they know it all! I decided not to have the bloods done, i wouldn't terminate even if there was a high chance of downs so I decided to wait for scan. thankfully the hospital mw was totally supportive and said she wished more people put as much thought into it and really considered the outcome before blindly agreeing to the tests.

On the potty training front, I had potties in the house from before 18 months, I worked as a nursery nurse and was trained to put babies on the potty at every nappy change from a few months old so they learn to associate the potty with what goes on in the nappy. tried to start training ds at about 20 months, didn't get very far tho so stopped over the winter. started him again in earnest over the summer and still didn't seem to be sinking in, was fine so long as he had no clothes on and no distractions but otherwise, forget it! was doubly difficult as daddy isn't the most small child orientated person ever and everytime he went there daddy 'forgot' to leave his nappy off. had just got him to a point where we'd almost cracked it in september this yr (the week of his 3rd birthday), then he went on holiday with daddy for 8 days and because it was 'more convenient' he was in a nappy the whole time . expected him to come home 6 months behind where we were but suddenly it had clicked and he's only had odd accidents ever since!!!
twinkle i think you just have to put the potty etc there and just let ds take his own time, if every thing is there for him and he gets the right encouragement i'm sure he'll be fine, and if not, it's a boy thing!
runnyhabit go for it, don't think it's ever to early to start putting the idea there, just don't push it too much x
and for the record, ds had to wear nappy for poo for a month or so, banning it just made him hold it in so let him do it his way!

twinkle no news is usually good news on the blood test front, just keep waiting, i'm sure that letter will arrive soon x

pesha good for you, i'm in a very similar situation to you, dp has just moved out after 3 months cos after 3 years as a single mum, the financial strain of him living here became too much. I work but totally admire you for deciding to do so, I'd be slightly better off not working but am a firm believer that if you can get the same money off your own back rather than off benefits then you owe it to yourself and your children to give it a go, and if it doesn't work at least you can say you tried x so good luck, keep at it, and just think how good it will feel to stick your nose up in the air at that snotty cow that rang the dss!!!!!! on a practical note, you could try working as a temp, I am at the moment, if you are working before the birth, no matter how long for, you will get Maternity allowance (currently £108 per week) from the government (unfotunately dss again) and temping is easier to get into as they find you work for as long as you want it without having to commit to keeping you on after maternity leave.

wow, that's my super long entry over! don't often have the energy so is nice to catch up properly x

EllieK
(name change was cos I'm having a very bad week!)

elkiedee · 01/11/2006 23:19

Glad to know I'm not the only one having some grouchy moments. My low points for the day were:

a colleague having an extremely stinky late lunch at his desk - I think going out at lunchtime and leaving others in peace should be obligatory - he's a noisy so and so as well, and his break seems to involve reading out stories to others from the internet. My work's more audio typing than normal at the moment and it's hard when there are 3 conversations all very loud being conducted across you.

Arsenal match at home tonight, between work and home, both tube lines home affected. Some yob on the platform had the nerve to tell me that "you suits" (I haven't worn a suit for more than 8 years) going home from work are the problem for travelling at the wrong time and getting in the way of 22,000 football fans. And when I say yob I'm not being snobby, I've had some very middle class middle age blokes try and push me back into my seat for daring to try and get up in front of them to get off at my local tube station last year (I have the misfortune to live near two major football teams' grounds). Since Arsenal moved all of a mile or so down the road it's become worse, as the new ground is near an old lift-only station at Holloway Road and the police in their wisdom close it down. Grrrr. I was terrified someone would try to shove me in the stomach today - I'm only beginning to show, at 15 weeks, if someone knows and is looking to see if I do kind of thing.

Luci

Greengirlforever · 01/11/2006 23:46

Hah - thought us lot all went to bed early like good little pg people. I can't, cos I've eaten so much I don't think I can lie down !

DH back tomorrow , not quite sure of the reception I'm going to give him yet....

LKD - poor you with tubes - I hated them so much when I lived in London I used to go on the Routemasters, but I gather they are no more...

Stressedlady - I really feel for you with the midwife situation. Things seem to vary so much depending on where you are. All ante natal care here seems to be absolutely the best you can get. All scans & tests offered as a matter of course. And I live in such a small town that I have just the one very efficient and lovely mw, who I keep running into out and about as well.

Potty training... tbh my policy is to leave it as long as possible. That's what I'm doing with night training DS2 (3.4) who is really starting to get annoyed by his nappy so I don't think it'll be long now...

liath · 02/11/2006 07:04

Am a bit bleary eyed as dd was up early, but at least today she's at nursery in the afternoon so I can get 40 winks!! It looks like it's shaping up to be another lovely cold sunny autumn day here.

Smole - could you change consultant? He sounds a real Old School patronising Dr knows best type. Pity you can't see 1b3's or (if I remember right) AngeG's who sounded lovely. Mine is great but hopefully I won't need to see her this time if all goes well. Unfortunately my favourite midwife who I was secretly hoping would be on call when I'm in labour if going on holiday for 5 weeks over my due date - boo!

Not much else happening here, am enjoying not having to drive anywhere - we had the joys of "the wheels on the bus" over and over and over all the way down the ruddy M6 and back last week ! The joys of car journeys with toddlers...

geordiemacminx · 02/11/2006 09:15

Hey ladies, hoep you are all well.

Sorry I've been a bit quiet the past few days, just felt rubbish, migrane type things, blocked nose sore ears and really really sad. Just struggling to look after myself, which makes my feel crap cos I'm normally miss organise and look-after everyone. DP hs been lovely but at the moment all I want is to feel well.

I really do think this "blooming" thing is a croc of sh*te. We have a baby inside that is taking all the goodness and leaving us with naff all. Still I wouldnt swap it for the world.

Off to the doctors in a bit but I know that its gonnabe a complete waste of time " take some paracetamol and get some rest" HA HA

Right thats my rant for the day over. Sorry.
