RL20 the lady who is running my classes (NHS) is doing two videos one that's not graphic and then depending how the group feels after one that is. They let you leave at the end if you don't want to see the graphic one, she's also promised to bring a real placenta down from the birthing unit at the end for anyone who fancies a look Grin

Nunkie · 10/02/2015 11:01

Lauren, it at least sounds healthier than the massive bag of Butterkist I blasted my way thru this weekend (hot on the heels of a big load of dirty nachos, some sort of bean-filled Ghanaian stew and a S'mores chocolate cheesecake slice).

I don't want to talk about what happened in my bowels later, but it was worth it

[holds head up in defiance. Whilst clenching butthole.]

I'm like Squidge though a drawer full of snacks at work, this week I have cadbury's mini rolls, the contents of my graze box (2 snacks left), some cereal bars (Special K summer berry and mint choc), the decimated bag of chocolate raisins and a bag of pistachios. Oh and half a packet of ginger nuts that's been hanging around since the first trimester. Blush

TheBooMonster · 10/02/2015 11:43

penguin it's the 19th, so it's still 8 days away. I remember them having to book them quite far in advance for DD though. My abdomen is far less tender today and I have popping in my fanjo. Wondering if this means baby has engaged and there's a bit more space than when she was transverse over the weekend...

what an awful bombshell daholster I would second sorting out a budget sheet so you can see what sort of spending you've got going on that's essential and what can be cut down. is the change effective immediately?

cinnamon glad you guys have been able to have a chat about last night! I'm on a couple of committees for things and it doesn't matter whether he knows six months or six hours in advance about a meeting he always gets an arse about them, so I've taken to putting them on the calendar but not mentioning it and then saying 'oh yes, I'm out this evening, don't you remember' runs out the door as that way I hear less about it :P

holly I was already suffering with a cold before I went for my jab so i expect it's a coincidence but I felt pretty awful for days. midwife at the hospital was saying that there's a pretty awful viral thing going round at the moment that's had them busy as it causes headaches and all sorts of other things that get them on alert for pre-eclampsia.

BananaToast · 10/02/2015 12:38

Another one in the hungry club today - brought an apple and two satsumas to work which definitely didn't get me through the morning very well. Stomach has been rumbling for ages! Think I may need to follow your lead Lauren and pack more snacks!

Siarie · 10/02/2015 12:45

Yup a real placenta! Apparently we will be quite preoccupied with our babies so won't notice our own. We saw a picture of one yesterday, it's quite amazing really that the placenta supports life. I mean without it none of us would be here.

I don't know if I want to see one close up though, I tend to feel sick at the strangest things so we will see!

I've been more hungry, I ate two breakfasts this morning and have just finished my lunch. Holly I was the same as Boo, I had the start of a cold which my DH had before I had the jab. It never came to a full cold but I did feel bad after so can't say whether it was the jab or not.

My arm is very sore after my whooping cough vaccine this morning. I had midwife appt as well baby is breech at the minute but it's got time to spin around.

I'm working from home today and I've been that busy only just grabbing some lunch now if you can call it that as I am having ready brek because I forgot to buy bread when I was out.

31w today.

cinnamongreyhound · 10/02/2015 13:45

I asked to see my placenta with ds1 and got a funny look but they bought it over and was quite interesting. Also watched a video at my antenatal classes and one lady was really surprised Shock

I think the meeting thing is because of when it falls aswell but I do quite a bit, I'm a school governor, treasurer for the preschool committee which includes doing accounts and wages and I'm event director at our local parkrun. They always run longer than expected and he thinks I'm a control freak who can't take enough of a step back from ds1's education so havein be involved even though it is infuriating at times. I think you are either the kind of person who does these things or you're not and he's very much not! I also think being a childminder is not particularly respected in the working world and I would like to have things on my cv when I do return to some kinds of job with other people that suggests I have skills and can actually interact with other adults!

Hidingthefear · 10/02/2015 13:48

Hi everyone, long time no chat, think I managed to Catch up. Been really ill since friday and turns out I've got gastroenteritis. Ended up in hospital on Sunday on 2 liters of drip due to dehydration.managed to eat a weetabix today and not throw up so slight improvement. Apparently I should be off work until I have no symptoms for 48 hours. Seen midwife today and bump is measuring fine, head down at the moment so at least he's facing the right way for now. Midwife told me not to take 3 iron tablets A day(even though that's what the doctor and prescription said). Just to take 1 per day. I'm not iron anaemic but my b12 and my ferritin levels are low, so they've taken another blood test and will fax my gp. So much conflicting info!!

rl20 we don't watch videos in our class I don't think but if we did I wouldn't be watching. They have been banned by our hypnobirth in teacher. She's shown us a couple of hypnobirth videos on YouTube and says we should only watch things that reinforce positive birth.

sairie I remember my placenta. it was enormous. bigger than the kidney dish it was in. and very like liver. I was surprised. But didn't care, ultimately, as the whole saga was over and DD was here, alive and well.

Hidingthefear · 10/02/2015 14:00

Oh by the way on the pampers thing, tesco have the 74 pack for £10.50 or 2 packs for £15.

OP posts:
RL20 · 10/02/2015 14:08

Siarie- Omg! Not sure if if want to see a placenta, especially as it wouldn't even be my own! Like another said, I'm quite squeamish!
With regard to birth videos I'm definitely going to ask beforehand and let them know I don't really want to watch one! Ha ha. Especially if it's graphic ??

RL20 · 10/02/2015 14:11

Oh and about the whooping cough jab- I have mine next week and remember a lady I know had her flu jab and whooping on the same day (last year some time) and she got really ill but apparently she had a reaction so I'm guessing that's not the norm. Hoepfully! I dreaded the flu jab but I was ok with that so really hoping that I'll be ok with this one!

Siarie · 10/02/2015 14:16

Hiding Why would a birth video automatically be deemed a negative birth experience? Just out of interest. It's the ladies own daughter giving birth and she has given birth to loads of her families babies (easier for rights to the video apparently). It doesn't seem like we are being shown the video to shock or scare, it's to inform really.

Siarie · 10/02/2015 14:24

She has delivered* even haha :D

berberana · 10/02/2015 14:26

Hi All,

It's been a looooong time since I posted (mainly cos I really hate typing on my phone so waiting til I can have a spell with the laptop), but I've been keeping up with reading all the threads. There are so many things I want to reply to / comment on / ask about, but with my hopelessness at posting and the speed with which these threads move, the moment for most of them has passed!

I'm sorry for so many of you who have had scares or felt ill in the last couple of weeks. But I must say it is somewhat reassuring that there are other people who are feeling weary / ungainly etc. I keep thinking that it's "too soon" to feel this huge! I am 31+3 so potentially there are a couple of months to go! My due date is 11/4, but DS1 came at 36 weeks so I cant envisage what life might be like if I go past that (although I hope I do!).

My FIL had his fortune read which told him there would be a baby born on 17th March... this is obviously nonsense but once that sort of thing is in your head it's hard to get rid of - why MIL told me such rubbish I have no idea! (Well... she is bonkers). That was my grandad's birthday so it would be kinda nice but I do want to hang on a little longer this time!

I'm already fed up of having to climb stairs to go for a wee, tying my shoelaces is a right chore, turning over in bed is a major operation... and I have developed heartburn. Lovely lovely.

I am driving myself mad thinking about prams. I had one for DS1, but the brake jammed when he was 10 months and we got a full refund amazingly, so we used the money to buy a stroller and 2 car seats. We obviously need a new one suitable for newborn. I just cannot bring myself to spend hundreds and hundreds of pounds on one, so I am trying to decide between a good make but 2nd hand, which I could prob then sell on, or something middling but brand new.

I've got my hypnobirthing course next weekend. I did it with DS1 and it was great and I have been listening to the CDs already, but this course is free of charge so it'll be good to have a refresher. Good for DH too I think as well - he needs his mind focussing a little I reckon - he commented to friends at the weekend that he is feeling pretty blasé about everything this time around!!

But it could well be very different! We are hoping for a home birth, whereas last time we were in hospital for 9 days (rather needlessly), so DH carried on working and didn't really see much of me in the initial recovery period - by the time I got home I was completely back to normal. Also DS1 was on SCBU and I had a private room with my own bathroom, so I got plenty of sleep, food brought to me, and everything kept sparkling clean (I know this is not everyone's experience of maternity wards, but I was most impressed by Wigan hospital in many respects!!) and whilst it's not something I wish to repeat, it does strike me that we will be "first-timers" in many ways (assuming everything goes to plan). Not only will I have to do everything for myself but I will have a 4 year old to take into account as well!

Hidingthefear · 10/02/2015 14:30

Basically because most videos show women in some degree of pain, and words like contractions, pushing, delivery etc are used which aren't used in hypnobirth. It may seem a little rose tinted but I think it's a good idea, only using positive reinforcement, don't want anything to get in the way of a positive birth.
so no more one born every minute for me, just watching hypnobirths.
Supposed to be at "parent craft" (antenatel) tonight but seen as I still have gastroenteritis I'm staying home. DH said he'd still go though and bring home info lol. Tonight is about pain relief so I'm not too bothered about missing it tonight seen as I'm considering home birth and not using any drugs.

What a long morning! Will read back later - waiting for meds in hospital pharmacy. Have been told it's obstetric cholestasis, but bloods taken to rule out hepatitis etc (hope not!!) and need appt for liver ultrasound. Repeat bloods next week too.

The registrar I have seen has told me to expect induction of labour around 37-38 weeks, but have a growth scan and consultant appt on Thursday so will discuss with her and she will decide about that. And have a prescription for a boat load of meds - ursodeoxycholic acid, vitamin k, piriton and cream with menthol. She was quite positive though and said risks to baby are low. Oh the joys of pregnancy!

Nunkie · 10/02/2015 14:54

Hey berberana - we are just emerging from Buggy Research Hell ourselves :0D

Babystyle Oyster seems pretty popular as a good value option as does the Mamas and Papas Zoom as a super-bargain all-in-one - needless to say even more so if found on Gumtree/eBay :0D Solas are also supposed to be a good buy. Squatting was it you that kindly helped me out with info on your experience with a Zoom?)

Cinnamon, i'm in awe at you keeping all those balls in the air on top of your job. I just about manage to get home, eat and sleep. Granted, my job can be quite stressful at times, but then so can looking after a room full of small children I would imagine!! So I don't understand people who don't see childminding as a proper job, a skill in itself. Especially when you're having to interact with and coax a lot of often very awkward human beings a lot of the time. Now /that's/ a skill! :0)

Nunkie · 10/02/2015 14:56

Oh, and Hiding - how awful :0( I'm glad you're on the mend, albeit early days!

smogsville · 10/02/2015 15:02

Ugh. Wrote a really long thing on phone while on tube and then battery died before I could post it.

So a more general Brew Thanks and hugs to all who are unwell or dealing with tricky OH scenarios. Everyone seems eminently sensible and capable on here so I hope things get sorted out.

Had better get on with some work as I've been out all morning. Mainly eating things. In spite of the fact that I'm v full I am still having to stop myself dipping into my top drawer for some chocs.
