I'm looking for a lightweight stroller to put in the car. I don't drive, and walk a LOT so I have bought an old fashioned (but pristine) second hand marmet coach built pram that is identical to the Silver Cross Kensington for my luxury item. However, I do also need something that's light and easily fits in the car/on public transport

ChickenMe · 06/02/2015 23:00

You poor thing doing nights holster. Since crazy caffeine ODs are out I would recommend Airwaves because when I was in training in my job we had weeks of dull classroom stuff. Chewing Airwaves helped me concentrate and cos they are menthol ie a bit cold and spicy it kind of keeps you alert.
Failing that San Pelligrino Limon is very sour and might help.

Siarie · 06/02/2015 23:09

Buying a travel system I found to be just like buying a car. Everyone has an opinion and will tell you it, but the best thing is to find something that suits you and is affordable to you.

Oh and whatever you buy someone will have a friend who bought it and wouldn't recimmem because insert bad thing here

Siarie · 06/02/2015 23:10

Recommend* sigh! That was actually auto corrected to a word that doesn't even make sense

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 06/02/2015 23:24

dances I loved my zeta vooom - umbrella fold, easy to push, suitable from birth... And we fit it in the boot of the fiat 500! And it's still going 2 years on... My youngest naps in it while on the school run. And it's cheaper than most.

PenguinPoser · 07/02/2015 00:32

Hope your night isn't too bad daholster too late now but I would have said haribo of any description probably tangfastic! I always had a bag of some kind of sweets to help me through nights! Fingers crossed it isn't busy. Brew for you!

We have ordered the mamas and papas zoom, hope it's ok as we were heavily swayed by the price compared to other travel systems! Not getting delivered until mid march so time will tell. I'm not expecting it to last forever or anything - and have nothing to compare it to apart from a friends silver cross which I found big and bulky to push around.

Was just thinking - have read lots of negative comments about pethidine in labour - as far as I know my hospital use diamorphine instead. Any experiences with this? I know it's similar but just wondered if anyone had it and had better/same experiences as pethidine?

Also would welcome any helpful hints about managing SPD/hip pain which I've had for a week now, getting a bit worse. Walking is bad, and moving my left leg in general quite painful. Have ordered a support belt thing which I'm collecting tomorrow but would love to hear if anyone else has suffered and survived before! I'm a bit of a bad patient in terms of pain etc!

kismac · 07/02/2015 08:11

We're getting a City Jogger Mini GT. I think it's quite light and it has one hand fold option. Not sure what it's like size wise as we don't have a car. It felt really smooth to push, it has adjustable handle bar and big basket.

kismac · 07/02/2015 08:13

Sorry Penguin, I've not had any his pain. Might to worth contacting the maternity physio to get some exercises.

londonlivvy · 07/02/2015 08:42

Penguin, (I'm not a doc, just a yoga teacher, but have had experience professionally and personally) it's not a simple subject as the pelvis is complex. And the possible reasons and solutions are varied. As others have suggested, definitely go to your GP and get a Physio referral. It made a huge difference to me - I went from not being able to walk to my local shop to being basically back to normal.

Exercises are plentiful, mostly about developing the butt muscles which then support the pelvis whilst your ligaments are floppy with the pregnancy hormone relaxin. I need to do a proper post on this on my website so if I get organised this weekend I'll do it. Tiger pose, clam, bridge and squats, in summary.

If the pain is much worse in one hip than another, lots of people find that osteopathy or chiropractic helps. This can be because misalignment has occurred and they can help realign.

On a daily basis, there are various tips on how not to make it worse.

  • try to move with legs together (eg swing legs together when getting in and out of the car). Some people find sitting on a bin bag helps with the swivel action
  • keep the weight even on both legs (so don't stand slumped with the weight on one hip, particularly carrying a toddler on one hip. If putting tights on, sit down)
  • don't cross your legs (this misaligns your pelvis)
  • swim crawl not breaststroke
  • try to minimise stair climbing. Effectively for me this meant trying to be less forgetful!
  • pelvis support belt. Can be helpful. Others find it not at all helpful. Worth a go. Your physio may yet give you one. Depends on area,
PenguinPoser · 07/02/2015 09:08

Thanks kismac and londonlivvy. London I strongly suspect your advice is better than I would get from a GP! Will see how it is over the weekend, look up the exercises online and see about contacting GP/midwife next week for physio referral if possible. I know there isn't a magic cure for it but worried it will get worse as baby gets bigger. Will try some paracetamol too.

Hope everyone has a good day! My plans have changed to give me more of a free day Smile need to send off my mat allowance forms first, collect my support belt, do some washing and going for dinner with some friends later before picking DH up from a stag do Hmm. Will find some time to chill with a DVD this afternoon hopefully!

Hi all, I'm home! Quiet night thankfully with nice colleagues so wasn't too bad. So tired now, sleepy... Waiting for mum and dad to arrive so I can go to bed... Still, 9 hours down, 63 to go! Another shift next Friday! Shock

Lauren82000 · 07/02/2015 09:44

Ahh nice relaxing morning after a terrible night with DD she decided to wake up 3 times last night. Got an extra hour and half in bed when DH took her downstairs and a brew. now playing Lego in bed with DD and just got another brew. Smile Happy mummy this morning. Shame I'm going to have to get up soon to get ready for DDs swimming lesson.

AnniaFausta · 07/02/2015 09:45

So we had an unexpectedly exciting night... DH got up to go to the bathroom at about 2am and couldn't open the door! I had this problem last year when I got shut in the study - the problem is that the bolts in the doors are quite worn, and just stop having the necessary traction to turn the handles. Cue an exciting 45 minute game of 'escape from the locked room' using whatever common household materials you happen to have on your bedroom. Thankfully, a combination of nail scissors and luggage padlock keys got us out... so now DH is of the firm belief we should change all the door handles in the house so that they have rollers rather than proper latches. I can't say that I disagree...

minipie · 07/02/2015 09:46

Can I put a good word in for the Bugaboo Bee? I've got one, had it since 2012 and the longer I have it the more I like it. Unlike many who got bigger prams I've not felt the need to switch to an umbrella stroller as the Bee is so small and light - and it's way better than an umbrella for suspension, steering, adjustable handlebar, recline etc. Dead easy to fold and unfold. It's great on buses as can get into spaces others can't.

Can't believe a wheel fell off Chicken - it must not have been clicked in properly when assembled. It does feel quite rickety when you first try it but the heavier your child gets the more stable it feels, and it's actually very solidly built. Nothing has ever broken on mine despite daily hard use!

Admittedly it is rubbish on bumpy ground/off road due to the small wheels but that's the trade off for being tiny and light.

If I was buying one today I'd probably look for a good second hand Bee Plus (the one I have) rather than the new Bee3 because I've read the canopy and seat aren't as good on the Bee3. I'd also look at the Easywalker Mosey which looks like the Bee but possibly even better - but nobody stocks it!

Penguin I got bad hip pain on one side last pregnancy. A really firm massage (she left bruises!) sorted it out. I didn't have SPD, I think it was caused by asymmetric movement - carrying heavy handbag on one side and sitting cross legged - so my tips would be, switch to a rucksack, sit straight and get a massage or physio/osteo involved.

Feeling a bit grumpy about my gestational diabetes, I feel like I'm being really careful with what I eat but am still getting somewhat high blood sugar readings... I have a nasty feeling I'm headed towards medication and induction at 38 weeks Sad anyway seeing the diabetes dietician on Tues so let's see what they say.

minipie · 07/02/2015 09:50

Annia that happened to me - the doorhandle to Dd's room came off and I got stuck in her room with her, age 5 months, with DH not due home for hours. luckily I was BF so knew she wouldn't starve but it was scary. got out using nail clippers as a screwdriver in the end.

kismac · 07/02/2015 10:17

Daholster, you are super woman. I went to my mum's for dinner last night and ended up falling asleep at 7.30pm. Had no intention of staying the night but my body had other plans. This pregnancy is kicking my ass.

Aww, Annia. That sounds scary! Yes, probably a good idea to get all the handles changed.

Mini, don't be too hard on yourself. You'll get the hang of it. Hopefully, the dietician can offer sound helpful advice.

Nunkie · 07/02/2015 10:52

Congrats on emerging from the bedroom unscathed Annia! :0D (I hope OH hadn't peed himself in the meantime)

Penguin I found the NHS antenatal classes useful for covering hip pain, tho I think livvy has been thru just about everything I heard there.
The other thing they mentioned was placing a pillow between your knees when you sleep on you side, to straighten out the hips.
(And yes, I find squats relieve the discomfort.)

Interesting and useful to hear lots more buggy info! (Do agree tho Siarie that you're always going to find a contrary opinion. Tho some things do crop up repeatedly - eg: the rubbishness of the Graco car seat I mentioned - I believe babies seem to find it quite uncomfortable).

Still tempted by the Flip if I go for a new one - we preferred it over the Sola in the shop - tho there is something on that that drives folk mad, allegedly, that the clip kind of explodes into about five pieces sometimes when you're trying to strap a toddler in! :0D
Don't think I've tried an uppababy yet!

Siarie · 07/02/2015 10:54

I also have pelvic pain, just a word of warning though. Physio needs to be specific to your own needs. So for example it would be really bad for anyone to go and do those exercises unless the rest of their health is taken into consideration.

For example, I have a disc in my back which is weak. I only know this because I had terrible pain and was lucky enough to have private insurance meaning I got an MRI (allowing my consultant to really understand what parts are damaged). Apparently lots of people walk around with disc problems and don't realise, living with back ache etc. My point being, I have exercises specific to me and have been warned not to do yoga etc as it could make my back worse. I don't live with pain anymore, because my abs are keeping my back strong. I suppose what I'm saying is you need someone who can look at your back and pelvis so that you don't end up with a great pelvis but crippling back pain Grin

FiRaffe · 07/02/2015 11:51

Glad the great escape was successful Annia and you were also okay minipie when it happened to you. I've had it twice - thankfully on the ground floor both times. First in my shared house, couldn't get out of my bedroom so my male housemate heard my yelling, unscrewed the handle his side then passed the screwdriver through the windows with instructions on what to do. Second time was in my house (well, bungalow) so sent DH out the back door and through the gate to then go in the front door and let us out! All good fun trying to escape - we've not been brave enough to put the handle back on that door!

Lauren82000 · 07/02/2015 12:29

One of the reasons we never close doors in our house. Not even the bathroom unless we have guests in the house. Our doors are weird they get stuck quite a bit. No idea how they have been put in as none of them fit the frame properly and are liable to either not close at all or never open again. Shock

ChickenMe · 07/02/2015 12:43

mini I would've laughed off the wheel failure but OH is perfectionist and he didn't like the Bee anyway - he just needed an excuse to hate it. Grin

ChickenMe · 07/02/2015 12:46

Sorry about your GD as well mini what a pain. So hard at this time as well because it's when you feel most tired and in need of all the unhealthy food.

AnniaFausta · 07/02/2015 12:48

Heh, Nunkie, DH got so preoccupied with sorting it out that he had to be reminded that was what he'd got up to do in the first place ;) Thank goodness it was him and not me, is all I can say!

We have my parents living within 20 mins drive, who have keys, and DH's phone was in the room, so if we hadn't managed to be successful tool using mammals we'd have given them a ring, but we wanted to put that off as long as possible at that time of the morning!

I will say that I was very grateful for antenatal yoga this morning to get it all out of my system, though.

Mini - we saw Bee last weekend and it looked a bit more practical for town life/commuting than the bigger models (and I think it's one of the latter that the parents have got their hands on), but we'll wait and see when we test drive next week. Gosh, we know how to make Valentine's day really special ;)
