DD was 9lb 10 and was in newborn for a while and 0-3 months did last her till 3 months (sizes are still accurate for her). She's quite long but her head is also big and weighs a lot I think! This baby will mostly wear DD's stuff for the first few months. DD has quite a few navy and grey outfits - I like navy on girls, though I think other colours suit DD's colouring better. I haven't taken any bump pics yet - I have quite a bump though!

PregnantAndEngaged · 11/01/2015 15:51

I asked my midwife about 'normal' weight gain last week because pre-preg I was 7.5 stone, now 8.1. She said some women put on lots in the early stages due to body changes e.g fat reserves building in thighs and breast growth, whereas others gain more towards the end. Just depends on the person :)

htf2 · 11/01/2015 17:13

Tori I wouldn't worry, like sun I am fairly small, and at 19+2 far from putting on weight am still under my booking weight which I would never have expected, and the midwives certainly don't seem worried about it! So if they aren't worried for those of us with low BMIs they certainly won't be for people with higher BMIs. Does make me pretty keen to get to the 20 week scan on wed to check it's all ok! And there's no size/shape judging here :) I should see if there is some online pregnancy yoga, I'm sure that would be good for me.
Thanks all for the sizing info, sounds to me like newborn is 0000 or 000 and probably fits up to about 10lbs and then 0 - 3 is a bit bigger.

JennyOfOldstones · 11/01/2015 17:27

I have put on nearly a stone already! Most of that was during the early weeks when I was eating for Britain to keep the nausea at bay. It has stabilized a bit now I am eating normally again. Asked my midwife if it was ok and she said to look it up online Confused and that they only weigh me at the start and end!

PregnantAndEngaged · 11/01/2015 17:45

My midwife and also the NHS website states that normal weight gain is 2 stone over the whole pregnancy, so provided you don't gain more than another stone, you'll be within the 'normal' bracket. Although even if you go over slightly, it's not a huge deal. But if you go too far over it will just take a bit longer to lose the weight after.

Been a bit quiet lately, but am always reading and have joined the FB group too - some really lovely pics of bumps over there tonight.

My mind has been consumed with pushchairs and sleeping equipment lately (that, and organising a wedding in March!).

This is my first, so I don't have any experience to fall back on. How do you figure out what you need for the baby to sleep in? I can't decide whether I need a carrycot for a pram, or whether I can get the right pushchair (ie, from 0) and a sling. If I don't have a carrycot, I need to either get a Moses basket or get a bedside crib. How do I decide which?!

AnythingNotEverything · 11/01/2015 18:44

Is it time to confess some stupid pregnancy brain mistakes?

I've just overdosed DD on vitamin D. Extensive googling tells me this won't be harmful as a one off, but it's not great to give her my vitamin d instead of hers!

Come on ... Share Smile

PregnantAndEngaged · 11/01/2015 18:49

ClearlyOpaque - I'm getting a moses basket as I think babies look super snug and cosy in then. When they get too big for moses basket (which I've been told is somewhen around 5-6 months mark), some people get a crib or you can just go straight in with a cot. I will be going straight for a cotbed next as otherwise I will be spending a fortune on different types of beds.

I know your pain because I've spent the last few days spending HOURS researching prams. My finace's parents are buying it for us (bless them!) and they kept asking us if we'd found anything yet. Trouble is, there's so much out there and so many different types e.g. prams, strollers, shoppers. Nightmare! In the end I decided the best 'affordable' (my idea of affordable is £200-300 max) brand is Graco so we've now ordered a Graco pram. Try to look for one that will suit a baby - 3 years rather than just a baby one because it saves you needing to look for another one in a year or so.

Also, a lot of good prams come as a travel system so they contain car seat and carrycot as well.

PregnantAndEngaged · 11/01/2015 18:51

I was coming in here to ask a question:

Anyone else getting pains in their lower back on bending over or picking up things lately? Yesterday I had to roll out of bed because if I didn't I'd get this horrible sharp pain in my lower back, like I'd trapped a nerve or something :S

Anyway I'm concerned because I'm doing my masters, got my final exams in Feb and March. They are open book so often have lots of books and a massive folder full of notes but the tables are SO tiny I have to keep bending over to pick up the book. Do you think if I told the university that I'm pregnant and suffering from a bad back, they'd need to accommodate me in some way e.g. by an extra desk to put my books on so I don't need to keep bending over?

AnythingNotEverything · 11/01/2015 18:58

Pregnant I think they would (and should) definitely accommodate your needs for an extra table. It's not like you're asking for extra time!

Re: Moses baskets, neither of mine have managed more than 10 weeks in one. Current advice is for baby to sleep in you room until at least 6 months, so if you want to stick with this, check you can get your cot in your room! We spent 4 months squeezing around DD's cotbed. This baby will go from basket to cot as they're a bit smaller.

Our friends lent us a Moses basket after they had their second and Ds slept really well in it. It had a stand so it's off the floor.

A lot depends on the size of your baby, but Ds was in his moses for 4 months and then we moved him to his cot (which is massive and he's still in it!). We were really lucky as we were given the cot by friends too!

At the time our bedroom wasn't big enough to fit the cot in so he was in his own room at 4 months. It was fine but we'll play it by ear this time, our bedroom is big enough now.

impatienceisavirtue · 11/01/2015 19:18

Evening ladies!

Picked up a couple more bits today. The tommee tippee stuff is on offer in tesco - breast bump for £10 and so was micro steriliser. I have had the electric tommee tippee steriliser and didn't rate it at all - the manual one for me got a lot better results.

Got quite a few boys clothes - DH keeps saying we should wait until the 20 week scan as the gender one we had at 15+3 may have been wrong and I am useless with receipts, but it was quite clearly not wrong and I am a boy machine - this is my fourth. Got some lovely stuff though. I keep imagining him in it all. DS3 has chosen some of it, he's so excited!

Chookford · 11/01/2015 19:20

I had a Moses basket for dd in our room until she was 6wks, she was suck a long baby it became uncomfortable for her after that as she couldn't stretch out, I put her in her cot at 6and a half weeks in her own room.. I know that's frowned upon by health visitors etc but it worked for us she was much happier and slept through the night from 8wks so will do the same again with this one too!

Chookford · 11/01/2015 19:22

Such not suck!

Emz1989 · 11/01/2015 19:25

Confession time - this evening saw my first, absolute emotional meltdown! I heard about these things but it's my first proper experience!! I've calmed now and I'm feeling reflective (and extremely silly!!) Poor dh didn't boil enough potatoes for the shepherds pie and that obviously made him the worst man on the planet!!?! Please tell me I'm not alone?!
What was really interesting (even to me) was that mid-rant I told him how stressed I am about our finances, how stressed I m that we live in a 4th floor apartment without a lift, how stressed I am about the lack of support from his family, how much I'm hating my job at the mo, but more importantly how worried I am about the baby.... I think I knew I felt all these things but to scream them say them out loud even came as a shock to myself! I've been worrying because all my symptoms seem to have disappeared over the last 10 days or so? Boobs aren't sore any more, nausea has gone, appetites back with a vengeance... I thought this would make me happy but I'm petrified!
I've got my 16week mw appt tomorrow, desperately hoping to hear a heartbeat whilst I'm there...
I'm normally a relatively calm, sane person but I feel like a totally erratic, loony... Just needed to vent!!

bubalou · 11/01/2015 19:26

I'm also not a fan of Moses baskets so we had a crib with DS which I loved.

He was a very long baby so outgrew it by 4 months but I dread to think how long it would have been in a Moses. Going to use the crib again this time for sure. Smile

Re - sharp back pain. I have this too - I have been told it's most likely sciatica. Quite common in pregnancy.

Smile

DD was in a Moses basket first as they are cosy for the early months, then went into a crib. We kept her in our room for 6 months as recommended. Well, 7 actually as we started weaning at 6 months and didn't want to do too much new stuff in one go. She slept through from just before 8 weeks too.

Newcy · 11/01/2015 19:32

Hi all,

Just thought I would share that I found a pretty good bargain in mothercare yesterday... Tommie tippie microwave steriliser and 6 bottle should have been £63 reduced to £32! Smile

I'd compare lengths of baskets and cribs before buying too as they do vary. DD was/is long but her crib was very long; she could have stayed in it for longer than the 7 months.
