Sorry :) GTT is glucose Tolerance Test, tests for gestational diabetes. Basically no food from midnight til next morning, go to clinic, get bloods drawn, drink a disgustingly sweet drink, sit on butt bored for 2 hours and have bloods taken again. Very tedious, especially when I am pretty sure I am going to have gestational diabetes again as I had it during my first pregnancy. Am now bored at the doctors instead of the hospital having had my flu jab and now waiting for midwife appt. Grin my day is soooooo exciting!

Isabeau1980 · 16/02/2015 18:12

nannynoname My GTT isn't until 28 weeks. What did they do about the gestational diabetes with you if you don't mind me asking.

Hope the rest of your appointment went well.

nannynome · 16/02/2015 18:28

My GTT was at 16 weeks due to it being my second pregnancy. Last pregnancy I was put under the diabetes consultancy path, in my area it meant I had an appointment every 2 weeks at the hospital to check my levels and a scan every 4 weeks to check the baby weight. I had to monitor my bloods when I woke up and an hour after each meal. I used an app on my phone called glucose buddy because I am a geek, it allowed me to put in my levels and what I had eaten. I used to print out the spreadsheet just before my appointment and give it to the consultant as it made life easier. Like I said, I am a geek and also a bit of a project manager though Wink they found my approach funny when everyone else was writing things down in notebooks Smile

When my levels started increasing and being uncontrolled by diet they put me on a drug called metformin and calcium tablets. I was lucky as I only needed he tablets to be controlled all the way through my pregnancy and didn't have to go on insulin. I was very food conscious and made sure I kept my levels down. DS was only 6lb 11oz which proves if you can keep everything in control it will all be ok. Diabetic chocolate, sugar free jelly and sugar free angel delight are your friends if craving sweet stuff!
I also went to ante-natal classes run by the hospital which were diabetes specific. Let me know if you want any more info, I shall stop boring everyone to death now Grin

nannynome · 16/02/2015 18:34

Actually there is one more thing, they had me expressing at 35 weeks, just tiny amounts at first and freezing the milk. It meant that when DS was born we could top his milk up easily to get his glucose levels stabilised as well. (They can arrive needing their sugar levels bringing up) This was really helpful as formula fills them up more and isn't as good for stabilising the levels. It also meant the DS was exclusively breastmilk fed at the beginning. I was very grateful to my antenatal team for that as it meant we were released from hospital earlier than may have been possible otherwise. They normally induce 2 weeks early as well with GD mummies.

Guyropes · 16/02/2015 21:17

Thanks for telling us about the GTT nannybone: I was going to ask. I've been told i'll need one as one of my grandparents was diabetic. I don't have to have it for another couple of months tho.

Hi Sweetpea,
We have a 2 1/2 yr old and have told him all about 'the little baby' that's on it's way - I also recommend 'There's a House Inside my Mummy' which DS loves reading at bedtime. He seems now to understand pretty well what is going on (kisses my tummy/the baby good night each evening ?? and tells me it is getting bigger each day so the baby can come out and play with him soon! - though he thinks it is going to come out of my belly button or mouth...!). We've been having lots of fun planning things like where the baby is going to sleep and what toys DS will be able to teach it how to play with... So your 3 yr old should be able to understand and get involved too, I'm sure. Let us know how you get on!

anyothergirl · 16/02/2015 22:49

Thanks for the replies, I'm in Northern Ireland. In my first pregnancy I had a 12 week scan that was quite detailed. This time, my booking in was so early that it was a case of spotting the heartbeat and hopping off the bed again. I think I'm going to ring the hospital and ask, I hate the thought of waiting until well into April before seeing little one again.

Glitterrascal · 17/02/2015 20:11

Anyothergirl- I'm NI based too and I had a similar experience- it seems to be a quick scan and you're off again. I was a bit jealous when ppl on this were saying they had lengthy scans where the sonographer had them walk around or move to get the best view. The sonographer told me nothing could be done to move baby who seemed curled up and that was that! Or others said that they were brought back at 12 weeks if their first scan didn't measure up to 12 weeks. I didn't measure to the week I thought I was and I was sent on my way until march even though I'm convinced it's not right! Plus everyone talking
About Nuchal screening was confusing me- it was never mentioned to me and I've just found out it doesn't happen in NI apparently for political reasons?!!

AliOh · 17/02/2015 20:57

I have to have a gtt aswell Nannynome, I really hope I don't have gd, desperate for a home birth this time Sad. How are you all feeling ladies? I'm dying to get my next scan date hope it comes soon!!

AliOh · 17/02/2015 21:03

glitter do you still get the downs screening blood tests? Perhaps the reason they don't offer nuchal screening in Ireland is linked to the abortion laws? Just a guess though! Fwiw it's not offered in all areas of the UK, I didn't have it in my last pregnancy but was offered a quadruple blood test instead, they only started doing nuchal screening in my area the week before I went for my 12 week scan this time!

Glitterrascal · 17/02/2015 21:40

No we don't get offered that either Ali, think you are prob right as to why they don't offer it here! Learning all these things as I go along ??

SweetPeaand2P · 17/02/2015 22:05

Thanks Guyropes, nannynome and Pumpkinseed. I've had a look at there's a house inside mummy on Amazon and it looks really good.
Tonight we were sorting out toys and he has graciously given some to the baby.
I have to go and have the GTT next month - not looking forward to it. Hate the drink they give you!

Isabeau1980 · 17/02/2015 23:43

Sweetpeaand2P To add insult to injury we have to provide our own Lucozade. I hate the bloody stuff. Envy It had to be the original stuff, if it was the orange version at least.

Isabeau1980 · 17/02/2015 23:45

Has to be the original stuff.

I really should concentrate more.

Dozygirl · 18/02/2015 08:11

I was able to book my 20 week scan straight after I'd finished my 12 week scan so I didn't have to wait for a date which has been nice. Booked my 16 week midwife appt for 4th March. Wonder if I'll get to hear the heartbeat. I've heard it's different in different places. I hope so because I don't feel very pregnant at the mo with having no bump yet. Anyone else not got a bump at nearly 15 weeks? It is my first so not sure if that makes a difference.

Dozygirl · 18/02/2015 08:12

Does everyone have the gtt test or is it just if u have an indication for it? How do they decide if u need it?

daisysunshine2 · 18/02/2015 08:35

I've got to have the GTT because type 1 diabetes runs in my family so got to have the test at 16 weeks... I think otherwise its maybe just on symptoms? I'm not really sure sorry!

daisysunshine2 · 18/02/2015 08:36

That was meant to say 26 weeks not 16 weeks!

sianihedgehog · 18/02/2015 09:10

dozygirl My bump has very suddenly started to appear at nearly 16 weeks. I don't think anyone else would be able to tell yet, but I can definitely see a change in my shape beyond just looking fat now.

PerpetualSummer · 18/02/2015 11:12

I'm at 15+3 and my bump has definitely appeared. I am on holidays for 10 days and hadn't told work yet last week as thought I didn't look pregnant yet so could get away with it but this week am definitely seeing it there! Went for a 5 hour hike yesterday so going to get a pregnancy massage today but anyone have recommendations for massages in London as well?

cattyf · 18/02/2015 11:14

I have to have a GTT test at 28 weeks because I have PCOS, I don't have any other factors that would make me more likely to have it but the midwife said all women with PCOS have it (at least in our area!). Not looking forward to it, can't remember the last time in my life I went that long without eating ;)

nannynome · 18/02/2015 13:15

I think it depends on family history, BMI or other medical contributing factors. They would also think about sending you for one if your urine tested high for glucose. Am expecting mine to come back positive considering I had it last time. I have an appointment booked with HR tomorrow to let them know, am freaking out somewhat about that but heyho.

SweetPeaand2P · 18/02/2015 15:25

Didn't start to show until 18 weeks last time. Showing now at 15+2 although I don't think anyone except DH and my mum can tell. Can't quite do trousers up but the bumpband I bought is rubbish. Keeps moving all over the place. Might just stick to dresses or leggings!

Dani240 · 18/02/2015 19:15

dozygirl the midwife said that I had to have one because my BMI was over 30 at booking in. I guess they don't need to give you one if you don't have any risk factors for GD!

My bump is definitely showing, and I'm only 14+2! Although I suppose there are two of them in there, so it's to be expected. I haven't put on any weight but I have completely changed shape. It's so weird. I know it sounds stupid but it sort of came as a surprise when it started showing - I knew that pregnant women get bumps, but somehow my brain hadn't connected the dots to realise that I was going to get one!

Frolicacid · 18/02/2015 21:47

Hello!! Only skim read back. I hope everyone is ok. My lovely grandma died a few days ago, so I've not been up to much. She was old and ready to go but we will miss her heaps.

On the good news front, I finally had my scan today. They put me forward a bit to being due on 21st August. I'm overjoyed at gaining a week! Hopefully that means the vomitting will stop soon.
I'll try to attach a pic. We have a very wriggly baby but she managed to get a nice shot.

I'm definitely getting a bit of a bump. I've lost almost a stone since the BFP but you can barely tell due to humongous knockers and protruding belly Blush
