Hey ladies! This thread is always so busy! Can anyone answer a quick question for me? I have an apt with the consultant this PM. Just because at my booking in spot I mentioned to the midwife that my mum had a complicated birth which made me a bit nervous. I am not overly concerned anymore - my main fear would have been if I found I was having twins. But do I need to take anything? Presuming he won't want a wee sample? Not really sure what to expect!

aberjen · 14/01/2015 13:13

Just - when I have had consultant appointments, I have always had to give a urine sample, regardless of the reason (my appointment last week was to discuss previous postpartum hemorrhage and whether I could be at risk this time). My letter told me to turn up with a full bladder, as you have to do the sample at the hospital - is there anything in your letter on this?

FWIW, my consultant was more interested in discussing the anxiety issues I had after birth last time, so she talked through some of the options and asked about any anxiety this time, and then agreed that I could be discharged back to midwife-led care (a lot of my issues last time were related to being completely overwhelmed as a first timer, I feel a lot more relaxed and prepared second time around).

Good luck for your appointment!

Justyouwaitandsee · 14/01/2015 13:23

Thanks Aberjen! Just scurried upstairs to check my letter again but it gives no instructions other than where and when to turn up. I guess I could take a sample in my bag just in case! (Ahh the glamour of pregnancy strikes again!) Wink

cuphat · 14/01/2015 13:30

I needed one for mine, just. There's a sign at the hospital saying you need to bring one for every appointment.

Has anyone had a consultant appt and they haven't written anything at all in your notes? I've just noticed that the consultant who agreed my section hasn't written anything at all in my notes! Don't know if that's because he did something on a computer system instead (is it just midwives who write in them?) or whether he accidentally wrote them in my old notes (as he had them out to look at). I thought your notes should contain everything in case you go into labour elsewhere...

Gingergeek · 14/01/2015 13:50

Way behind on this thread! Oops!
Had our scan on the 5th and decided to keep the sex a secret. I was swaying towards finding out and am now having moments where I really wished I had, but being told at the point of delivery with our other two was just amazing, so team Yellow again for us :)
Everything else went fine at the scan. Feeling huge now, but nausea has worn off and kicks are coming in faster (and harder) so that's good :)
Uni have came back and said I can't take time off after my first half of my finals in feb (do the second half in feb next year) which is disappointing, but I originally wanted to carry on. It wasn't til they waved the year off carrot that I began to think how nice it would be to have a break, more time for older kids etc. So I'll be back on placement only two weeks or so after giving birth! Will only be for around three or four weeks then off for 6 weeks for summer (while all the other med students go off to lovely places on their electives!) then back for my final year before I become a Dr! Eeeep!
Anyway, just thought I'd check in! Haven't read the whole thread but hope the rest of the May 2015 gang are doing well :)

Chookford · 14/01/2015 14:26

ginger tori and rachy glad you all had good scans, lovely news!

WigglyWigglyWoo · 14/01/2015 15:37

Just got back from my 24 week midwife appointment. Was reassuring to hear the heartbeat! Has anyone bought a Doppler to listen at home. The midwife advised against it and I don't have one but it is tempting!

She said from now on I'm meant to feel at least 10 episodes of movement per day and to phone urgently if I don't. I'm feeling regular movement but definitely not 10 per day yet. In guessing this will change in the next few weeks. Either that or I have a lazy baby!

Justyouwaitandsee · 14/01/2015 16:37

Thanks for the advice aberjen and cuphat - I love having you ladies around. They did spring a surprise sample request on me at reception and gave me a pot but I was smugly able to say I'd brought one with me - much nicer than trying to produce one on demand. Thanks so much for the tip off. Smile

The consultant was LOVELY and really reassuring. I explained why I had been referred (which I was worried he might think was insignificant) but he just chatted through everything and then looked through my notes. He commented that my placenta was a bit low at the last scan (something which we hadn't been told) so decided to check it out. He said he'd check the heartbeat but then offered us a sneaky extra scan instead, which was nice and unexpected. The placenta already seems to have shifted upwards and baby looked good. He then offered to put us down for an extra reassurance scan at 32-34 weeks so am looking forward to that too. Feels so good to know who he is, in case we end up seeing him if things don't go according to plan...

The receptionist was also lovely and corrected an small mistake she noticed on my name stickers and I was able to collect my MATB1 certificate from the doctors. I have been so impressed with everyone we have seen so far.

Justyouwaitandsee · 14/01/2015 16:40

wiggly - I meant to say the other day that it's good to know we're not the only ones attempting crazy house renovations before the due date! We went to check out a new bath before we came home Wink
Glad your appointment went well too Grin

Threesoundslikealot · 14/01/2015 16:51

More scans, and more good news! Brilliant.

Justyou, how lovely you had such a great and reassuring experience. I get so sad reading about poor encounters on MN with doctors and midwives, especially as I've had 95% positive interactions myself and I hope I'm not alone in that. My hospital does a 32/36 week scan as standard - be prepared for a very different view. They are so big by then that you just get glimpses of little bits of them!

Justyouwaitandsee · 14/01/2015 16:58

Oh - sorry for another post! I have just been reading up on low lying placentas. I have found several threads where women with the placenta in the same position as me (3mm from cervix at 20wk scan) have been put on either bed or pelvic rest (no sex, no heavy lifting). I wasn't advised to do anything like this, but haven't had any noticeable problems. Might take things a bit easier though. Is anyone else being monitored for this?

Justyouwaitandsee · 14/01/2015 17:09

Thanks Three - I think we cross posted! Glad you have had a good experience too. I think it makes such a difference.

mumxof3x · 14/01/2015 18:24

Great news ginger, tori and rachey x

Justyou, im glad your consult went well. If you are concerned about not being advised what not to do definately speak to mw or consultant just to clarify, and just take it easy in the mean time.

Im supposed to be at college but I have taken the evening off to work from home as still feeling off sorts.

shinyhappyone · 14/01/2015 18:51

Hi justyou, I have a low lying anterior placenta. Haven't been told to do anything differently but will be scanned at 36 weeks to see where it is. They told me it was nothing to worry about but report immediately if any bleeding (like you wouldn't anyway!) so not worried! xx

KittyVonCatsington · 14/01/2015 19:26

Great news on the scans Rachey Tori Ginger and Just! Staring at Kitlet right now and she is popping up all over my tummy-must be punching and kicking!!

I too can't complain about the staff who have seen me and Kitlet though to now-especially the EPU ladies. Words can't express!

Just got home from another parents evening. Can't believe I'll be on the other side in a few years!

Gingergeek · 14/01/2015 20:23

Glad to hear you had a great experience with the consultant and other healthcare staff Justyou, three and kitty

I had a bit of a grumpy ultrasound tech/sonographer at my last scan who made me feel like a naughty child!
Funny thing is I'm starting an obs and gyn placement in Feb, in the same hosp I'm due to deliver in myself so I reckon I'll probably see her again. Hope she doesn't remember me haha!

just I was told at my 20 wk scan I have low lying placenta. She gave me a leaflet and told me not to google it cos there was all sorts of stories out there! Said only way it can go is up and booked me in for a scan at 32 weeks. My sister had it with her second. It had moved enough by 36 weeks. She said not to think about it until nearer the birth so I'm taking that advice!

Justyouwaitandsee · 14/01/2015 22:28

Thanks Scottishgal - I think that's what I intend to do. Neither the consultant or the sonographer (who didn't even mention it) seemed overly worried. I think I will tell work though as I am trying to ensure I take things easy and my job can be quite demanding.
