I hadn't heard about the benefits of delayed cord clamping before - it makes sense. i wonder why all hospitals don't do it?

I keep getting quite nervous about the birth now. Like you donkir, I had a retained placenta last time which completely fell apart and I bled quite heavily. Hoping it doesn't happen again as would like to avoid a spinal if possible.

DH got a new job (higher level than before). He's going to call his new manager today to discuss things, including rather badly, that his 8week notice period basically means he's starting on paternity leave!!! Good job its NHS, so he still qualifies for pat leave and full pay, even though its a different trust. Also they had said they'd honour any leave he had booked and he had mentioned that his wife was pregnant - we don't think they'd have expected him to have 2 weeks pat leave, followed by 2weeks full a/l, followed by two weeks of half days a/l booked though. He's going to see if he can still have 2 weeks a/l after the pat leave and forget about the half days. At least the elcs means we should be able to give pretty definite dates for it all happening in advance (we'll know exact date at my 34week appointment and already know it'll be w/c 9th feb).

Really hoping that conversation goes OK. We don't want him to look bad before he's even started. Fingers crossed.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 10/12/2014 10:22

purple its apparently something that started in the 70's medicalisation of birth time period and was never really questioned until a few years back, when research indicated delayed was better. Then NICE have been slow to change guidelines to reflect that, so until a couple of weeks ago immediate cord clamping was standard practice under NICE guidelines.

Well I am back from appontment about the drugs in labout my birth plan is now...

Call hospital when contractions begin and then when at 3 mins apart call and tell them I am on my way, he said most hospitals say to wait until less than 2 mins apart now Shock but for me to go in and go on ecg, he wants me to have a mobile epidural. My worries have been sorted I wondered about of I had an epidural again would they make me stay in like last time he said as soon as I can walk and have a wee I am allowed home and epidural and even stitches don't hinder than I am so happy to hear this.
If my HR is ok I can come off ecg and delay epi if I choose to so I can stay mobile but if HR is crazy I need one straight away. Feeling happy today now. I now need to start training myself to drink water as he said I was dehydrated which didnt help with my swelling down below which stopped my going for a wee for so long I needed the pee bag....anything to get back to my own bed asap Grin

huurgh, i think somebody may have turned himself round or something, because I can't stand up straight at the moment- feels like ive done about 8000 sit ups. Time to see if those hypnobirthing breathing exercises are all a load of bollocks or not

Why- god bless the NHS! (and congrats on your DH's new job)- that sounds so lucky that he's able to carry all his leave over and everything

OP posts:
donkir · 10/12/2014 13:03

Bangles I've just had half an hr of being stuck on the sofa too. Think he might be back to back now my back is killing. Was starting to panic. Can anyone tell me what braxton hicks feel like please. Does you whole tummy feel tight or just the lower half?

BanglesSpangles · 10/12/2014 13:30

i don't think ive experienced the braxtons yet, so not sure im afraid... Going to struggle out for a walk to try and shake my son out of my bloody ribs- its taking my breath away at the moment!

Donkir- i was reading some 'spinning babies' stuff, and apparently getting on all fours is good for turning a back to backer- worth a punt if you're still suffering

OP posts:
Honeybird · 10/12/2014 15:03

My braxton hicks are either all over or quite often right side only. Quite odd, my belly goes all lopsided and rock hard, and I have to pee. As things get bigger they get more obvious and, if not painful, definitely uncomfortable. The baby is often moving quite a bit both before and after. Needing to pee, being dehydrated, baby movement or your own exertions are given as possible triggers but the only ones I'm sure of is that lifting the kids, a brisk walk or an awkward position do it for me.

So donkir they could just be lower down for you. If it feels like your uterus has turned into a steel ball, any part of it, that's a giveaway...

Honeybird · 10/12/2014 15:12

Both of my labours were basically just an increase in frequency and pain of my braxton hicks. People say 'you'll know the difference' but I think that is kind of misleading, labour contractions and braxton hicks are the same thing really after all...
Is it too early to ask about people's experience of the start of labour?? I never noticed any 'show' for example, is that weird? And both times I showed up at hospital feeling a bit desperate, only to be told I was a massive 1cm dilated.

purpleteapig · 10/12/2014 15:27

Good news on your birth plan Memphis, you must be so relieved!

My BH have ramped up too - and always on the right side. But it's because I have a bi-cornuate uterus so baby is mainly squished over that side.

Honey - I didn't have any 'show' last time either. I just had bad back ache which intensified over the next few hours. I was very lucky in that the mw visited women's homes so we didn't go to hospital too early. When we finally went , I was 8cm - having to hang around in the waiting room while they got the room ready was agony!

Memphisbelly · 10/12/2014 15:58

I had part of my show 2 weeks before I started contracting so it isn't always showing it is about to kick off. I then started getting pains every 7 mins from the off, I am sure I had an aching back before hand but as ds was back to back my back hurt constantly anyway.
These pains stayed at 7 mins apart but strong enough to stop me in my tracks for 18 hours before we rang unit and they wanted me in for monitoring, they sent me home and this carried on for a while, eventually got to 4 mins apart and I went in as I couldn't cope (back to back is apparently like pain at 9cm when you are only 3cmShock) I got put on a drip a bit later to speed it up but it didn't agree with ds so that stopped and it just slowly ramped up (so did the drugs I used) i decribed labour pain as belly going firm like braxton hicks but with an added dragging pain like period pains, I said like someone was pulling my insides downwards.
I will never forget being shocked how painful contractions get yet when they subside between pains the pain totally goes, I knew people said it but its hard to believe until you have them! I had a mobile epidural which meant I could let it wear off then press button for more when it got bad. Once ds popped out every ache and pain went.

sandulacek · 10/12/2014 16:03

whyO hope it went well. NHS is not known for a speedy recruitment with the checks that need to be done before anyone starts...it takes forever. As long as he mentioned all the AL at the interview they need to honour it even if it's not ideal. Chances are the post is either covered by someone or vacant.

I went to a dentist earlier today, an appointment already booked for after the birth for some work...at least it's free Blush.

Having a second opinion scan tomorrow to see if we need an mri for baby's brain...fingers crossed we don't!

jenmcspen · 10/12/2014 21:35

Totally non-pregnancy related, but v v happy today as my bathroom is now finally plumbed in and working! Grin Just need to paint and do flooring, but no more 3am trips downstairs to use the loo, or going to my mum's for a shower. Had the first bath in my own house for a fortnight tonight. Utter bliss Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin !

BanglesSpangles · 10/12/2014 21:42

Aah jen, i feel your joy- we've got the plumber coming on monday to do ours- its going to be a novelty to have tiles on the wall again!

Currently we just have a shower and I am SO looking forward to having a bath again!

jenmcspen · 10/12/2014 21:48

The old one was awful with a stupidly cramped layout. There will actually be enough room for me and OH to do baby bathtimes together now. Will be lovely Smile

LittleMissSunshine33 · 10/12/2014 22:01

Yay Jen such a good feeling :)

Memphis that sounds like a good description of labour pains I'm always asking people what it feels like as it's the best way to prepare myself but most people say they can't explain it!

Went to the birth centre today pretty scary! And strange as no bed as imagined just water pool solid sofas etc was very nice but quite ... natural mother almost hippy like!

freneticfox · 10/12/2014 22:41

Oh my god, do I feel nauseated tonight :-(

I really hope this isn't a return of the MS.

Memphisbelly · 10/12/2014 23:33

Oh no frenetic hoping it is just the last bit of stress coming from you in an odd way and you will be ok tomorrow?

Jen ah sounds fab I do love a soak in the bath.

So went out for a meal tonight with my friends, 2 of the live in Aus so not seen them for 2 years was lovely, she had never felt a baby nove it was pretty awesome see her fsce light up as she thought she felt a kick then defo felt one Grin

I have had a dodgy tummy all night though 5 times to the loo and a mad dash to get home to go again.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 11/12/2014 00:28

Sand I've got everything crossed for you tomorrow (well today really). I really hope things are OK.

NHS job moves do take forever - he applied for the job in September (possibly august - too long a go to remember) and was interviewed in October. He's only just been given the all clear and he has a 8 week notice period to give now. He still hasn't been able to speak to new manager although she emailed him first thing. Hoping he can have the 2weeks a/l after pat leave - he mentioned that he'd got paternity leave followed by extra leave after in February, but not how much, at the interview. TBH we had thought when he applied for the job, if by some miricale he got it (he's not actually high enough qualified yet), he'd have been settled in well before the baby.

Grinningcat · 11/12/2014 08:35

Morning All. I hope everyone is well or at least feeling better than last night. I have spent the last couple of days in various places around the country and consequently my pelvis is in a bit of a mess of pain (not nearly as bad as some of you I hasten to add). Fortunately my one meeting today has been changed to a telecom so I am now working from home. Cue a nice cherry scone for brekkie Smile.

JacktheLab · 11/12/2014 09:10

Morning all, waiting at the diabetes clinic to check up on little miss, there are some positives to having gdWink

Hope everyone has a fab day, how are you feeling now frenetic?

jenmcspen · 11/12/2014 09:28

Hope it all goes ok today sand and that you are feeling better frenetic

I have so much sympathy for those of you suffering with pgp. Mine has thankfully stayed very mild and is much more manageable now I am not at work.

Supposed to be going to get my last xmas gifts today but looking at the weather don't want to go out!

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 11/12/2014 09:43

I made hubby late for work - I couldn't get out of bed, to the toilet or downstairs without him basically holding me up all the way and he had to get me and DS's breakfasts. This pain is ridiculous and I'm really teary today. I have enough and I don't know how the hell I'm supposed to get through the next 8.5weeks - I'm just getting worse all the damn time.

I'm also starting to panick about the reality of have two young children - DS wasn't an easy baby and I'm not sure how I'm going to cope with a toddler and a newborn.

Memphisbelly · 11/12/2014 10:36

morning all!
whyowhy hope the new baby is easier for you than first time. ds was an angel apart from not sleeping I am fully expecting a horror this time.

I had a meltdown at work I am so clumsy and drop everything but belly is so tight I cannot bend
