Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Bangles I am sure they will be fine although the homebirths I know of the mw hasn't stayed with them. i live rurally and there are always 3 mw in area on call for home births in the night...this is just for the villages.
My friend lives in central London she called her mw who came out and said she was 3 cm and not to call again until pains were a minute apart Shock needless to say her dh was mw when she flew out and mw walked in in time to cut the cord!
I think it is great as you hear so many people being put off a home birth who really want one but hope it doesn't go the other way and they say to people who don't want them ah you can do it at home!

BanglesSpangles · 03/12/2014 14:37

my trust seem really clued up for it- it's not been a problem so far when I've broached it, but i just wonder how they'd be able to get that many midwives ferried around three (pretty huge) london boroughs, compared to walking from one room to another in a hospital- sounds like a logistical nightmare!

That said, the hospital i'd have to go to should i want to go in, is the biggest maternity unit in the country, so from that point of view, it must make sense to have everyone giving birth in one place, rather than spread out over lots of different housewives. I'm thinking motorbikes!! Or possibly parachute jumps

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 14:42

motorbiking midwives would be amazing!

freneticfox · 03/12/2014 15:19

Memphis I have absolutely no idea what I'll do. I'm assuming forced into something I don't want and then deal with the consequences after that.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 03/12/2014 15:34

Frenetic I really can't see the other hospital refusing. I just hope you can swap easily enough and see consultant quickly, so you can get to relax for the rest of your pregnancy.

I told DH about your situation last night he was appalled too. He was shocked aswell after how my appointment had gone, said he was greatful we're under the hospital we are - I do wonder if where I used to live would have been like yours (bad rep and extremely low c section rate).

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 15:40

frenetic I realky hope your new hospital agrees to it.
I was the opposite worrying they would push me to have one. have you had any joy getting hold of mw

Motorbikes!! It would be back to Call the Midwife days!

Glad you're happy with how things went with your consultant Memphis.

I saw my OB yesterday and she went over things a little bit more. She wants me to rest more-4 extra hours lying down each day and eat more protein. The next two scan are the big test. If the rate of growth continues to slow and goes below 10th percentile, they will get baby out. That will make it 34 weeks. My dr is being really positive and saying not to worry just yet. She's talking about things we'll do at 36 weeks and going through birth plans still etc. But it is also good mentally to be prepared for the possibility of a prem baby. A friend is a NICU nurse so has been a great help.
We now need to urgently get shopping! We have some clothes that are probably going to be too big for ages even if baby hangs in there and that's it!

GeekyHybrid · 03/12/2014 18:08

31 week appointment today. All was good but not my regular mw so no birth plan discussions or anything. Just very much the basics. Hey ho, next one will be Xmas eve!

Frenetic I'd definitely be putting in a complaint, saying all research you'd looked at was rubbish and talking about 'normal', I mean wtf is 'normal' anyway. We're all individuals with individual needs, not f*in statistics! Jeez, my needs / wants are very different to lots of other people's but that doesn't make one person right and another wrong. Excuse the rant!!

On home births, I know only one couple who recently had one, all was fine until placenta wouldn't deliver so was blue lighted to hospital anyway. I'd be fine with the idea but OH isn't good with blood so a) him fainting may be an issue, b) can't see him cleaning up either. So best we head to a hospital where others can pick him up whilst mw and I are a bit busy.Grin Grin

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 18:25

Yes geeky the clean up operation doesn't appeal to me either, my friend said oh they clean up for you.....the clean up was throw the sheets and towels in the bath for her to clean up Grin

BanglesSpangles · 03/12/2014 18:47

I got talking to a mw who was very proud of the fact that she had someone give birth on a white rug and she left the place absolutely pristine afterwards Grin.

Sounds like there's a lot of disposable stuff they recommend you pick up which just gets bagged up to go in the bin and the rest is, I'm guessing, a load in the washing machine - i think they clear up any other 'spillage' for you

That said, as lovely and wafty as all this home birth stuff is to me at present, i had a couple of what i think were braxton hicks yesterday and think I'm probably going to be screaming for all the drugs on the big day!

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 19:03

Bangles yes you can get disposable bedmats etc, I presume once it gets messy its only the actual birthing of baby and before that its just the water which would wipe up ok so as long as you are prepared you will be fine Grin

The nice thing I like sound of is being in your own bed soon after no hospital bed and bright lights

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 03/12/2014 19:42

"presume once it gets messy its only the actual birthing of baby and before that its just the water which would wipe up ok so as long as you are prepared you will be fine"

Memphis - I take it you didn't get the seriously bad projectile vomiting in established labour, like me then? - the mess that caused in the hospital would have ruined any carpet or furniture within a 3-4 foot radius of me (yes it really was that bad).

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 19:45

Whyowhy no I didn't vomit until he came out and I downed some coke and that came back up..I also made sure it went on the evil registar and no one/where else Grin

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 19:45

So I presumed wrong Grin

freneticfox · 03/12/2014 19:51

Do people often throw up in labour? I wasn't prepped for that either :p - I'm definitely a lot more recovered in terms of my sickness phobia than I was, but if I know it's possible then I'm less likely to freak out.

Didn't manage to get hold of my MW today, she is notoriously difficult to track down. Luckily when I DO find her she's bloody brilliant, so I don't mind doing a bit of chasing. She's a community midwife so I imagine is out and about a lot.

HelKat207 · 03/12/2014 19:52

Hi everyone!
Sorry to just burst in and say this but i am so scared of the pain of breastfeeding, is that really ridiculous?!? I'm fully prepared for the pain of my c-section but when it comes to letting my babies near my boobies i literally cringe and squirm in my chair! They were so painful after i had my boys that i could barely touch them let alone have anyone else near them so i went straight to my best mate cow and gate...but i have my heart set on trying this time...oh if only i wasn't such a child Confused

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 20:25

Frenetic yes it is possible. I was sick because I went into shock after he came out, think when people are sick it can be because of shock, adrenaline or just the drugs they are given during labour/section.

Hell I have no idea, I hate my boobs being touched at any point so after have a baby would be a no no.

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 20:25

The thing I am most worried about it after pains as so many people say they are so so bad especially after your second ot more. I didn't get any last time.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 03/12/2014 20:26

Frenetic I think its quite common for people to throw up a little, less common to get as bad as I did.

Memphis - TMI but I tried to get it in one of their disposable sick bowl things, but it was too projectile and just bounced out. I got covered, the bed got covered, the poor midwife (who was very nice) who'd passed me the sick bowl got covered, the floor was covered, it was unbelievable.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 03/12/2014 20:32

Helkat - was it the whole boob that was sore or mainly just nipples? I used a cream that worked miracles on nipples, but cant remember the name began with Lan... and was in purple packaging - hmm if preggy brain lifts I'll let you know what it was.

Memphis - after pains were hell last time so please don't tell me they are worse the second time. It felt like I was been battered round the lower back with a baseball bat, every time I bf and sometimes in between for a good couple of weeks (tbh it probably wasn't helped by my preexisting back probs).

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 20:32

Whyowhy You don't do things by halves!
I used to work in a bar and remember a regular came in after his wife had given birth she had drank a load of castor oil and when she was pushing liquid oil/shit shot out all over the mw and up the walls! Shock I remember thinking oh my never drink castor oil and...I hope when I have a baby my dh doesn't tell the pub what happened Grin

Memphisbelly · 03/12/2014 20:34

Yes I have read afterpains are as bad as labout on number 2...hope I miss out again

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 03/12/2014 20:42

Grinning I'm glad your consultant was being positive and fingers crossed next two scans go well.

BanglesSpangles · 03/12/2014 20:44

Haha, Why, that is some impressive sicking! didn't think of that- better add a sick bucket to the list of home birth equipment!

Frenetic- my sister had a good old vom courtesy of the gas and air, but I've heard that particular problem is more down to your inhalation technique!

Hel- i am really really not liking the idea of breast feeding- its definitely going to be a struggle- no idea why!
