marthahm · 12/10/2006 20:03

emzickle, hot baths apparently slow the whole thing down so maybe don't have another one. try being on all 4's with someone rubbing quite firmly at the bottom of your spine, just above your bottom. i'm not much use as a first timer, but the more you try to keep calm, the less it is meant to hurt apparently-i can imagine you telling me to f**k off right now, but it's to do with keeping adrenalin levels down as low as possible. when the pain comes try keeping your shoulders down and breathing through them. the more active you are the less likely it is to all slow down again. remember each contraction is a step nearer to holding your lovely baby. good luck, thinking of you.

nicand2 · 12/10/2006 20:15

emzickle hope it's going ok.

With my first labour I woke up at 6 with mild cramps which went away for a few hours and came back at tea time, by 9pm I was having to concentrate through them but they were every 3 mins so I went into hospital and got sent home. On the way home they really increased intensity and because they were so frequent I wasn't calming down between each one so I went back in and the helpful mw told me I had hours to go yet (just the sort of encouragement you need) I had some diamorphine which took the edge off them but then I asked for an epidural at about 5am. I finally gave birth at 11.30am

So it can take a while, try thinking that with every contraction you are getting nearer to the end. I know it doesn't feel like it at the time but you will be holding your baby before you know it. Remember your body is designed to do this!! Good luck xx

Swizzler · 12/10/2006 20:20

Emzickle: try kneeling in front of a bed or sofa and leaning your head on it on your crossed arms - I fpound that was the best position for early contractions. If they get any closer together, ring the mw. Are you using the boost button on your TENS?

Walking about shd also speed things up. I know it hurts like hell, but each contraction gets you closer - and you won't have to go through that one again.

girlygale1 · 12/10/2006 20:57

Hi Emzickle - I agree - walk around as much as you possibly can. The more active you are the more labour progresses. It hurts like hell, but you can try to focus through the pain, if you lay still then it'll slow it down, prolonging the pain and discomfort and gives you more time to stress about it.

Hope this helps - I walked nearly the whole way through my first labour and managed with just tens machine (when it was working) then gas and air.

Hang on in there - it is worth it! Thinking of you xxx

p.s - hi everyone, still here, still fat, still fed up and still want baby out now!!!!!!

wuzzlefraggle · 12/10/2006 20:59

Emzickle - i hope that your ok and that everythings speeding up for you xox i wish i had some advice to give, so all i can do is send you speedy labour vibes

BENDYB · 12/10/2006 21:01

Emzickle- i hope all is going well x

BENDYB · 13/10/2006 06:56

mornin every1, i wonder if any more babies have arrived yet?!
I had some very strong bh in night, kept me awake 4 few hours then they just stopped! so annoying!
have a good day every1!!!

DogMum · 13/10/2006 09:01

Good that things are looking up on the nest front, Emmy. And I'm gutted for you on the stretchmarks. I sort of expected them a few months ago, but would feel really hard done by if any showed up now. (Is that really why celebs have C-sections at 37 wks?) Of course your dh loves you for you - I think the men appreciate it as we become 'more comfortable.'

Not mentioning your lie-in yesterday clon - don't think I've done that for 20 yrs .

Hm Luboo, you've done your bit - hope the baby works her magic when she gets here and does the rest for you.

Hope the silence from Emzickle, GemmityGem, Totally and JMC means that things are going well.

Still nothing doing here. I spoke to helios yesterday (thanks for the tip Milliee) and if I go more than a week over, I'll probably call again for a little something.

Tigerlion · 13/10/2006 09:45

Hope you had a better night Emzickle. Just remember each contraction ? however painful ? is bringing you closer to the birth of your baby. Swore quite a few times when told that during labour last time (wonder why...?) but it is somethingt to think about.

For anyone who has not yet done so energy tablets are great to pack in your labour bag. Got through two packets last time. Again, it was probably more in my head that they were woking, but it certainly gave me something to focus on. And cans of Red Bull for birth partner are great as it gives them no excuse to nod off.

Now that I'm four days overdue I have now completely forgotten that I am pg and think that the baby will never come. Tried everything apart from sex and this baby just does not look ready to come out. Got the 200cc caurophyllum from Neals Yard and it did give me contractions but they then disappeared. They also do 200cc of Arnica if anyone needs some and are really helpful.

Does anyone know what the various shops are meant to hand out if your waters break there? I heard that Mothercare gives free nappies for as long as the baby needs them but interested to know what others hand out. You never know. You might just be in the right place at the right time!

Hope all went well yesterday JMC.

nicand2 · 13/10/2006 09:55

Tigerlion - Me and Dh were in Nationwide for most of Monday applying for a mortgage and we asked if my waters broke during the interview would we get the mortgage for free!! The answer was no. My friend told me John Lewis did something but she couldn't remember what.

Hope everyone is doing ok. I did wake up with a few cramps this morning so I'm hoping something will start during the day. It would be typical that this LO would put in an appearance on Friday 13th!!

Gingeme · 13/10/2006 10:11

Good morning ladies. Wow it realy is quiet here this morning. Ive just checked the birth announcement thread just in case but nothing there yet. Ooh this is so exciting.
Catgirl have you had your portraits done yet? Leah emailed my proofs to me yesterday and I want them all!! They are realy lovely even if I do say so myself. The ones with my ds are just lovely too. Ill have to see what my budget says first(ie hubbys wallet).
Going to get some raspberry leaf tea later. My aunt has ordered me some arnica from her lady.
Well good luck to all you ladies in the throws of labour. Got my parents and my ds's all here this weekend so dont mind if baby wants to put an appearence in as were all here. Bet he doesnt. Hell wait till everyone has gone home and my dh is on lates again.

marthahm · 13/10/2006 10:56

due date and nothing happening here either. have been exhausting myself walking for 40minute stretches to try to encourage the baby but no luck. i understand the worry re partners not fancying you anymore, i have to be the queen of stretch marks now, they are everywhere-i look diseased, they even go down below my knicker line-keep asking dh whether he still fancies me and wonderfully he keeps saying of course he does, do need the reassurance sometimes.
i took your advice dogsmum about emailing all the nct women and am about to go to meet 2 of them for coffee.
my hormones are going loopy. crying for the slightest reason (incl. my sil telling me she thought i would have the baby next thursday)
was really cheered up though by godmother ringing from bagdad to see how i was. my silly hormones must seem like a picnic compared to what she has to put up with working out there.
emzickle i really hope things went ok and you're still surviving, am thinking of you. hope the rest of you who went into labour are doing ok too.

catgirl · 13/10/2006 11:04

morning - it seems to be happening for a lot of people at the mo - I assume the silence is encouraging!

Gingme - no, not had photos done yet - next Thursday - glad yours are gorgeous - luckily I will be on my own, but intend to ask her to come back next year so we can have a family photo or two done.

Going to get some rasp leaf tablets tomorrow, tried the tea last time and really didn't like it.

Just had the forms from ds's nursery to apply for a reception place next september - where has my baby gone to?? Nearly started crying at the thought of that too! oh dear.

Swizzler · 13/10/2006 11:12

Morning all
Taking the chance to go onlinw while William's having a zzz - typing 1-handedly. Hope all goinh well Emz: couls we have more announcements soon?

Marthahm: take it easy and have a good howl or strop if you want to.

Glad to hear the photoshoots went well. So pleased I got my haircut in (just!) asDH has been snapping away and sending masses of photos out. Might see if he could put one of W up here. Prob hormones speaking, but he is gorgeous
For those packing bags: rmember to inc something to read! I had a few hrs on my own when DH had gone home, couldn't sleep or walk to get mag/card for tv.

youngmum21 · 13/10/2006 11:38

thanks bendy,

Bet i sound really childish, i mean i know your relationship changes when you have kids but dp just isnt intrested and when he is, there just no affection and he doesnt understand y i get upset!!!

nicand2 · 13/10/2006 11:41

Youngmum - Moan away if it makes you feel better. I remember when DS was born and me and DH had a row as we were leaving the hospital with baby (mixture of hormones and tiredness) I can't even remember what it was about but I do remember thinking it should have been a lovely time, when we got home DS was carried in in his car seat and I saw a huge bouquet of flowers which had a card 'love from Daddy' well that set me off and I spent the next half hour locked in the bathroom howling when I'd spent months thinking about how I'd show new baby his room etc. Hormones have a lot to answer for!!!

Rumpel · 13/10/2006 11:59

Hi Everyone - as you may have guessed my silence was due to the fact that baby Amber arrived on the 4th October. Congratulations to all the other new Mummies!! Lots of babies now!! Amber was 7lb - just a wee toter although it didn't feel like that when she was trying to make an appearance! Labour was very long and hard, as she was facing the wrong way, and things didn't exactly go to plan, but she is gorgeous. All she wants is fed and cuddles. All you soon to be mummies - take some lactulose into hospital with you - constipation with stitches

congratulations rumple xx

nicand2 · 13/10/2006 12:23

Congratulations Rumpel!

I'm pretty sure this one is back to back did it make the labour longer/more painful?

DogMum · 13/10/2006 12:29

Congratulations Rumpel. Amber sounds gorgeous.

Hope you're feeling better too, youngmum. Bloody hormones! Surely by now, someone ought to have invented a hormone injection for expectant dads so they can adjust to our moods and sex drive for the duration (actually, why wait until we're pregnant!) Nicand2, I blubbed at your DHs flowers - I'd better not watch any soppy films at the moment.

Glad you're meeting with some mums, Marthahm. Have a good time and don't worry - the baby hasn't read your antenatal notes so has no idea when he/she is 'due.'

BENDYB · 13/10/2006 12:31
