Sorry to hear so many people have the lurgy, are we allowed Vicks when pregnant ? Cos if so have u tried Vicks on your feet at bedtime? My OH swears by it.
It's scan day here this afternoon worried about the NT part of it as I'm 40 now eek.

longestlurkerever · 07/11/2014 07:52

On the illness front, are there any pregnancy-friendly remedies for a cough?

mumxof3x · 07/11/2014 07:52

Lina my friend had forceps with her first but second was fine :) my second was assisted delivery but 3rd, was not assisted at all and out very quick, im glad that you are pleased with the outcome. Its lovely walking out with such relief.

Sympathise with those who has the dreadful bug, mines just about gone but nose is still stuffy, but ut just keeps going back round our house.x

mumxof3x · 07/11/2014 07:55

Snooky, good luck :)
Ive tried it on the kids feet but never seemed to do much with them lol, but I have never tried it myself.

Snooky17 · 07/11/2014 08:15

Thanks mumxof3x
Lurker think you can take basic cough medicine the lemon and glycerine ones or good old fashioned honey and lemon and hot water works wonders

speedbird17 · 07/11/2014 13:04

Paracetamol, water and halls cough sweets here. Thank god DH has bought Vicks and will be home at 6pm. Have had to get my mum to pick up DD on her lunch break as I can barely move. Well wishes to all sickly May mums! What is it they say? This too shall pass?

longestlurkerever · 07/11/2014 14:57

Thanks. I feel OK in the day (well, sick, but no cough) but when I lie down at night I keep coughing. Three pillows helped a bit but I wanted linctus and didn't think it was allowed.

Snooky17 · 07/11/2014 16:06

Had my 12 week scan measuring 12+4 NT measurement is 1.6 mm so pleased with that and nasal bone seen so feeling positive, told my youngest who is 5 she is very excited which was lovely.

May 2015: Thread 3 - Let's do this :)

Snooky! What a lovely picture of mini-snooky Grin

I was told by Pharmacist who gave me the Flu jab, that we can use Vicks First Defence ok. This is the best to use because we can't use many of the cough syrups/lemsips/benylin etc. due to the excessive amounts of caffeine so best to stop a cold in it's tracks first.

If cold does manifest, they only things we can safely take are paracetamol and honey

Happy Friday May ladies Grin

BeanCalledPickle · 07/11/2014 18:23

Totally depends on who you ask. They will say no day and night nurse because of decongestant and antihistamine but then merrily prescribe me both for different reasons. Virtually everything is safe is pregnancy its just that general rule is don't take anything you don't need.

Mslad · 07/11/2014 18:38

Fab picture snooky it must be lovely to tell your excited dc Smile

diddly if you're still checking in, I'm so so sorry for your loss. You sounded very strong in your last post, I hope you're feeling ok and looking after yourself. I'm still thinking of you.

I've been off this thread for a few days as I've been reading as much as possible about higher risks for DS, while at the same time trying so hard not to think about it, and trying not to think about pregnancy general.

Hope everyone had a good week and will have a nice relaxing weekend - i think we all deserve it.

plinkyplonks · 07/11/2014 19:42

Congratulations to all those who have had scans! Lovely pictures!

diddly Sorry for your loss x Flowers

Mslad As difficult as it is - try not to worry about increased risk of DS. Even with a high risk - i.e. say 1:100 that's still 1 baby having downs syndrome out 100, and a 99/100 chance your baby WON'T be born with downs syndrome. I know people who have been told they are low risk and their baby was born with DS, people with high risk whose babies don't have DS!

Also, having read the various DS threads on this board, someone made a very good point - autism cannot be picked up during screening yet children with advanced autism can be more disruptive and have a more limited life than someone with mild DS. Although no-one would wish it on their own children and it would be extremely challenging to come to terms with my emotions if my child did end up having DS, they would still be my child and I'd still do the best i could for them. But obviously everyone has their own views/tolerances etc :)

Lovely pic snooky x

Snooky17 · 07/11/2014 20:18

Plinky you raise a really good point, food for thought thank you, I still have to wait for the results of my blood test, the cut off is 1/150 for high risk so Mslad you really are only just above the cut off, but I know if I get a call within next week I'm gonna be freaking out too.

LinaDee · 07/11/2014 20:21

Thanks mumof3 - that's reassuring.

Even when I think about my labour now it still makes me feel a little scared. DD was back to back and it was so painful (not that labour isn't anyway) but as soon as I had the epidural I really enjoyed my labour. I was relaxed and excited about my baby coming and then it got scary cos we had to go to theatre and have her delivered by forceps.

This time I'd like to go as long as I can, have an epidural then deliver myself in a normal delivery room (not a theatre!)
I suppose I can only dream....

Mslad · 07/11/2014 20:31

Thanks plinky for the reassurance, I think I need to remind myself of the positives. I think if I'm told one way or the other I can deal with it, but it's this waiting game I find really hard. I always thought I wasa patient person, but obviously not!!

Lina was getting the epidural scary/painful? I would love to have one but getting it sounds scary too :)

Titsalinabumsquash · 08/11/2014 02:10

ARGH, rapid change in tastes of things again.

Everything is suddenly really salty, unbearably so. The bread I normally ear several slices of a day is suddenly inedible. I'm so thirsty, I'm drinking tons of water but it's not helping (except making me need a wee all the time)
Is this a pregnancy thing or something I should get looked at?

FeelingBlessed77 · 08/11/2014 07:22

tits you could be diabetic, I would look into it if I was you. Could just be gestational diabetes, but thought that started later on.

mumxof3x · 08/11/2014 07:27

I think the back to back can play a big part in assisted delivery, thats what happened with ds2 but they didnt know he was back to back until his head was out- it was by far my most painful out of my 3 labours. Its normal to be scared after a traumatic birth, but just do what you need to do, and you will be fine :D after my visit to high dependancy unit after Ds1 birth, I cried going into labour with 2&3 at the sheer panic but all 3 have been so different with none of the same problems as the previous one. Im sure this time yours will be different too lina xx

Snooky great scan pik xx

mumxof3x · 08/11/2014 07:28

Def get it checked out tits xx

LinaDee · 08/11/2014 07:42

Not at all mslad - by the time I got mine I was in so much pain, I honestly didn't care. They put a wee anaesthetic in the area around where they were putting it in and I didn't feel a thing when they eventually did it.
The worst part was waiting for it and then having to lean forward and stay still through horrendous contractions but as I knew it would take the pain away, i gritted my teeth and got through it.

KittyVonCatsington · 08/11/2014 08:12

Lina Your advice/experience has been invaluable to me thank you so much!

I have a history of slipped discs and have a very weak back as a result. I am under consultant care because of it. An epidural may be the safest way for me to have a "natural" birth and your reassurance is helpful!

LinaDee · 08/11/2014 08:23

No problem kitty - I think the important thing was that it was absolutely the right thing for me at that time.
No one likes the thought of a big needle going into their back but I genuinely trusted all of the HCPs around me and knew that it was what I needed to get through my labour x

longestlurkerever · 08/11/2014 08:35

Hesitate to write this as really don't want it to come across as smug but when I was pregnant I desperately wanted to hear a positive birth story and was so reassured when I did hear a couple and unbearable labour didn't seem inevitable (if still quite likely). My labour was better than I was expecting. Time went quite quickly as I was a bit zoned out on hormones and at each stage that the pain start to feel close to unbearable there was something new to take the edge off like gas and air then the pool, which gave me huge relief. I found pushing ok. It was just before the pushing stage that was the worst. I am not saying it was fun. It took quite a lot of mental strength to cope not just with the pain but with the fear it was still going to get stronger but the actual intensity of pain isn't the worst I have been in by a long way - it's more the duration of pain that's gruelling but until the end you get a breather between contractions. I was fortunate I think that dd was not back to back and my waters didn't break till right at the end (actually the midwife had to break them) and anecdotally this helps, or at least stops a sudden increase in intensity before your hormones have had a chance to build snd compensate. I remember at the time asking myself could I go through it again and thinking 'well, probably once more then never again! ) my midwife was also fab. The antenatal ones were a mixed bunch but the one I had in labour was such a calming presence.

Oh one other thing. Dd was born with the cord round her neck and had to be whisked away. Tbh I was still too dazed to register this properly but dh was terrified. On tv that always ends in tragedy but in fact it's really common and what midwives are there for. she was totally fine seconds later.

This time I am a bit scared that things might happen altogether too quickly. My cousin's first baby took days to be born but their second was born in a lift! Do any of you have experience of a baby arriving in a hurry?
