Lovely scan pic plinky!

I saw my go yesterday to chase my midwife referral and they hadn't done it!! She got the secretary on it and she was meant to ring me yesterday afternoon but didn't and now they're close for the weekend.
I have my dating scan on 30th would I still be able to have it if I haven't been booked in?
I have no notes or anything. Apparently the first gp I saw just sent a scan referral to the ante natal clinic instead of contacting the case load team.
In going to ring back on Monday but I'm really worried now as I know the case load team get over subscribed so I might be too late now and my medical issues are really complicated I really don't think I can cope explaining everything at each appointment to a different midwife.
I'm probably worrying prematurely and as much as I value the nhs I really wish I could afford to go private.
I'm considering contacting one to one midwives of the case load team can't fit me in. Has anyone used them?

I had my 12 week scan yesterday and it was amazing! One healthy baby measuring 12+1 so due date 30th April but hope you will let me stay? :) Had a lovely day telling friends and family yesterday as well as terrifying DH at the cost of prams in mothercare! And I can now finally start to let myself believe this is actually happening!

silverpixie · 18/10/2014 08:03

So exciting to hear all about the 12 week scans and see the pictures! Very exciting times!
I have a bit of a dilemma- after my mini stress out last week my husband booked me a reassurance scan for this week. He doesn't really want me to take it if possible though coz he's not around and he wants to be there for the first one. Supposidly my 12 week scan should be the week after next although I haven't got my appointment through yet. I don't know whether I should just pull my socks up and wait it out til my official 12 week scan ?

bradders85 · 18/10/2014 08:11

pleased your scan went well acemay we are at the same stage had my scan on Thursday I'm due 30th April! Smile

KittyVonCatsington · 18/10/2014 08:25

Fluf Don't panic! Def keep to the scan date and the midwives will fit you in, no worries about not fitting you in-chances are you may have your booking in appointment same day as scan or they will ask you to see them quickly. Bloody GP! Angry

Great news on the scans acemay and bradders!! Would love to have you stay on the May thread as babies are often a bit late anyway Wink and you are both fab!

I'm 12 weeks today (according to my calculations and reassurance scan two weeks ago) Feels like a massive milestone and can't stop grinning! Wonder if my dates will change at my 12 week scan on Wednesday??!! Rather like the idea of a Bank Holiday weekend birthday for bubba Grin

jazzyjenbo · 18/10/2014 09:16

A little bit of advise needed please. So i lifted the sex ban and me and dh actually dtd last night (tmi) for the first time since i found out!
When i went to the loo after and wiped there was a pink tinge, kinda put it down to no action for a month, but on wiping this morning got pink again.
I'm just thinking maybe i got a small scratch etc but could it be sumthin more? Abit worried but wondered if this has happened to ne1 else.Confused

Justyouwaitandsee · 18/10/2014 09:25

Has anyone who has had their 12 wk scan had the nuchal measurement screening? I signed my agreement with the midwife, but me and my DH are pretty adamant that we would go ahead with the pregnancy even if Down's syndrome was suspected (I have a relative with DS and family history of disabilities)

A) I just wondered what other people have decided to do?

B) I wondered how it changes what happens in the scan? I am a bit worried as I want it to be a special first sight of our baby, not all focused on some measurement which might or might not mean something.

Can anyone reassure me? Is it still special? Is the measurement part fairly insignificant/quick? Do they give you the results of the test there and then?

My midwife was fairly reassuring which is why I agreed in the first place, and I think it was recommended particularly as I am over 30 (although only just)

Justyouwaitandsee · 18/10/2014 09:31

Hi jazzy - me and DH have dtd a few times since we found out and I have been really worried but haven't had any bleeding. But I haven't had any bleeding/discharge to speak of at all. I think I did read (when checking up on whether it would be ok) that this could happen, if things get disturbed so not necessarily something to worry about. Do you have a local epu you could call? Or just monitor over the weekend and see if things settle down? Otherwise hopefully someone with more personal experience will be along shortly to reassure! I am sure everything is perfectly fine. Hugs to you and your DH x

jazzyjenbo · 18/10/2014 09:46

When i had my reassurance scan last week they said to contact them again if i had any pain/bleeding or concerns, doubt they are open over the weekend. I hav midwife on tue, but may phone for advise on monday. Feeling abit shit tbh, purposefully put the ban in place so not to disturb nethin, and now i lifted it spotting!

mumxof3x · 18/10/2014 09:51

Jazzy, pregnancy hormones can make the cells on the cervix quite sensitive so can be normal to get abit of spotting sometimes...but if you are worried do get checked.

Congrats on the scan acemay :)

Justwait, when I had ds1 the nucal screening wasnt available then it was bloods taken at 12 and 16wks I think that determined the risk number, but ds2&3 it was and I had it done and can honestly say the scan was no dif to ds1 just a quick simple measurment under the neck. I am having it done again xx

jazzyjenbo · 18/10/2014 09:54

Justyou... I opted out of the screening in both of my previous pregnancies.
The test would show the risk of other major disorders aswell as the commonly known downs.
For me if it had come back high risk i still wouldnt then go on and hav the amnio so i didnt see the point of having measurements/bloods taken.
The midwife and sonographer both kept asking if i wanted it and i had to tell them both that i had made an i formed decision.
If you are unsure what to do read up on the other disorders that the screening is for... Most are pretty scary and are not compatible with life.. But find out what would happen if it does come back high risk, would u have further tests?
I know most ppl have the tests and that is completely fine. Just wasnt for me. also consider your risk factors age, family history... I will be re assessing my risk factors (3 yrs older than last time)

Justyouwaitandsee · 18/10/2014 10:04

Thanks both, that's really helpful. I think I will go ahead and have it done. Due to family history, it would be good to either get reassurance that things look ok or be alerted if there might be a higher risk. I am not keen on having an further tests even if a higher risk was flagged, but at least it would help us prepare. And I am already due to see a consultant, again for family history reasons.

Mumof3 - nice to know that your three scans were pretty similar. I just got a bit scared as 'dating scan' which others are talking about sounds so much nicer than 'nuchal screening scan' which is what my appointment letter refers to.

KittyVonCatsington · 18/10/2014 10:17

jazzy seeing spotting is a horrible feeling, poor you! However, DTD and spotting afterwards is normal. Do tell your midwife Tuesday but I don't think it is anything sinister!

just - if It was me choosing to go ahead with the pregnancy anyway, I would feel better knowing that the doctors and midwives were forewarned of any issues and helped me with a safer birth, than if no one knew, just in case baby needed to be delivered in a particular way. Does that make sense?

I'm 33, very nearly 34 with my first and do worry about the same thing as you. I haven't had my dating scan yet but I have had a reassurance scan even with the very real threat of... and can't even write it! , the sight of a moving baby on screen was out of this world amazing. You will love it Smile

Thanks kitty, it was only a little bit pink so hopefully it will just be sumthin and nuthin... Just have to keep thinking i've seen tye heartbeat, mc risk is now reduced. Going to be on edge until nxt may/june i'm sure. X

Justyouwaitandsee · 18/10/2014 11:05

Thanks Kitty & Tori, sounds like we are all thinking the same way! Love this board...

BeanCalledPickle · 18/10/2014 11:14

I don't think you'd necessarily know when the sonographer is measuring the nuchal fold. My experience of nhs scans is that it's all measurements and assessment. They date the baby in seconds just by measuring its length. In mine we sat in silence while he got on with it. If you pay for a private scan then it's more involved and less clinical.

I totally understand that you might not choose to do anything with the results but I definitely think it's better to be pre warned. It could affect care. My SIL had a rare condition where the baby was acquiring water in hits head which, had she left it, could have damaged her preventing future pregnancies. The baby wouldn't have made it to term anyway.

I have such a bloody bump now that I don't think I can hold it in much longer. I'm sure work must know because it's do obvious! If there are issues at my scan I think I'd have to tell them anyway. No idea how that conversation would go!

mumxof3x · 18/10/2014 11:23

Anyone else eating like a horse? I cannot stop, starting to get out of control Blush

Titsalinabumsquash · 18/10/2014 11:24

I have a big, wide bump! I'm wearing everything baggy like a knocked up teen trying to conceal a bump from her parents in a cheesy soap. Wink

I'm hankering for a roast today so I'm going to commit a mumsnet sin and hit the carvery for lunch. Grin

I'm having tests done, I figure I'll take all scans offered so any potential issues can be picked up early and we (me and DP and the doctors) can be prepared and informed as much as possible.

I'll have a private 4D scan later on in the pregnancy and let MIL come along and we get a DVD of it and have some lunch, we make a day of it and it really means a lot to MIL.

BeanCalledPickle · 18/10/2014 11:32

Do any of you get a third nhs scan at 32 weeks? Some hospitals do but mine doesn't. Annoying as reduces the risk of still birth. Another thing to pay for!

bradders85 · 18/10/2014 11:35

Just we had the screening and bloods done at my 12 week scan last week. Sonographer said she understood that we wanted it and was that still the case. It really wasn't a major part of the scan and she talked us through everything about what we could see etc, we were both happy that she took the time to point things out etc and it doesn't take away at all from the amazing sight of little bean! :-) x

bradders85 · 18/10/2014 11:36

oh and I have a question, I have spent all morning in town and cannot find any maternity work pants - everywhere only seems to do leggings or denim! Has anyone got any good recommendations for maternity work trousers? x

plinkyplonks · 18/10/2014 11:36

Just I had combined screening done yesterday. Hubbie and I had already decided we would not abort for Downs so for us it was about wanting to have all the info so we could be prepared.

How it changed the scan? Well initially it was much the same as the private scan - checking baby had a heartbeat, measuring length and agreed EDD.

Next they measured the fluid at the back of the baby's neck, crown measurement, checked for baby's hands, legs and for any obvious physical abnormalities.

After the scan, I then went for a blood test. The blood test, your risk factors (i.e. age, weight, etc) and using the measurements taken and blood test are used to calculate a 'risk' of DS and other chromosome disorders. They said they would get back to me with the results via mail within 7 days.

kitty best of luck with the scan! They need to bring your dates forward so we can be EDD buddies again. Not doing this labour thing on my own Grin

jazzy - from what I understand (from other threads) is that lightish bleeding is quite normal after sex. I would contact the midwife and get confirmation all is OK. Some links that may or may not be of help!:

acemay and bradders congratulations on your scans! Glad to hear they went well!

Fluffeh - Please do chase up on that - it's not acceptable not to have any notes by now or even any booking appointment done.

My booking appointment was around week 8-9 (I was given my pregnancy file, which all my notes in), my 12 week scan appointment card I received on week 11, yesterday was my scan and I have a 16 week appointment booked in with the same midwife. I can't imagine how they can do your scan without a booking appointment. Not to mention at your booking appointment you get blood tests done - which is another layer of screening for you and the baby. I don't see why you and i should have different experiences because you live in a different part of the country to me.

I would definitely chase the doctor's surgery and explain that your concerns and get chasing the midwife team - because the position they've put you in is unacceptable.
