Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
ohthegoats · 24/09/2014 11:06

Seeeeee... if a midwife is refusing Keillands, and my friend the Dr said she would too, it seems a no-brainer to me.

FlipFantasia · 24/09/2014 11:47

Mamami what a lovely milestone. My mum had a stitch with me (and my younger sister) after 4 second tri losses in a row and she still (37 & 36 years later) talks about how happy she and my dad were with their two miracle babies! We were her 5th and 6th babies btw! I have an older sister and 3 older brother (and this baby will be grandchild no 15!).

I totally agree with keillands - it was also my plan to refuse them in the Uk. Here in the US they are not used - if the baby is that high then it is safer to do a c section. Forceps have a place (and can be used in a c section) but keillands are dangerous.

Pregnant urgh to puking on the school run...the glam side of pregnancy strikes again!

Me i think I'd let your DS wait it out a bit longer. It's a long day, but it would be great for you and baby to have the time together and he will no doubt adjust soon.

I had what I think was warm up BHs last night. Enough to tell DH and, as well as bump tightening, strong feelings like I needed to poo (but didn't). This is unbelievably unusual for me. With the first two I had no BHs...after actually puking daily in the first tri (another first) and now BHs this pregnancy really is different!

fatpony · 24/09/2014 13:02

Good luck porcito! Sooo exciting. It's still feeling a bit surreal that babies are arriving on our thread. I finish work this week but have to do one day from home next week to finish a project off. This is what I have planned for my ten days of leave (that's if the baby doesn't come early).

  • batch cooking
  • hair cut
  • swimming everyday
  • hopefully meet up with the other two NCT ladies who will have started leave
  • sew a cushion cover for the baby's nursery and make a couple of pairs of leggings (I'm so slow this will take at least a day)
  • mainline Ben and Jerry's while watching daytime TV crap
  • snooze
  • download loads of kindle books from my amazon wishlist

I like to hear birth stories, (particularly from the c-section ladies as I am having one!). My MW said not to bother with a birth plan but just discuss what I would like with the hosp staff on the morning of the section. I can see why - a c-section is pretty formulaic but I have been watching videos of 'natural c-sections' on youtube filmed at some UK hospitals which are very interesting.

passmethewineplease · 24/09/2014 13:14

The keilands thing is really worrying me now. DD was delivered using them and to hear of all these horror stories is really upsetting. I didn't have a clue there were even different types of forceps until a few months ago.

Luckily I had a very experienced doctor who delivered DD perfectly but still. The what ifs..

YellowWellies · 24/09/2014 13:18

Fatpony a friend had a natural CS and loved it. Baby was weighed and measured next to her, (not taken out of sight), lots of skin to skin, delayed cord clamping and just asked the theatre staff to keep chat to a minimum i.e. it might just be a day in the office for them but she really didn't need to hear the ins and out of someone's divorce or weekend plans over what was a very special moment for her.

Mamami well done. A job well done! Smile

Me23 could I pick your brains, not sure if this is a daft question.... I've been given a fab kit from the hospital to help me collect all of the colostrum I'm producing now so if baby needs help feeding because of GD there's plenty set aside in advance. The MWs are happy about the triggering labour risk as whilst I'm 35+4 and likely in latent labour I've had steroids and baby is a good size. What my daft lass question is - is if I start expressing colostrum now is there a risk I'll run out of colostrum and actually bring my milk in before baby arrives? Does your body only produce colistrum for a finite period or is milk production triggered by the placenta being expelled?

Also found out I'll be able to labour in water, that they have waterproof monitoring kit (whoop!), that I won't need an insulin drip unless my dose rises above 20 a day, I can have a mobile epidural if needed, and that they are happy to top up with dairy free formula if FF top ups are needed! Just forgot to ask about tongue ties.

FlipFantasia · 24/09/2014 13:33

Yellow yay for all that fab waterproof mobile technology! Milk coming in is triggered by the removal of the placenta (which is why it comes in after a c section same as a vag birth). Am sure Me can weigh in properly.

YellowWellies · 24/09/2014 13:46

Thanks Flip Smile

LondonJen · 24/09/2014 14:38

Congrats Captain! Glad you and Rowan are doing well.

And congrats Gun! Enjoy your newborn snuggles.

Good news Fedup hurray! I would like to hear you birth story too.

Porcito I'm glad you went to get checked. Thinking of you today.

Pregnant and Me sorry for your challenging days.

I am feeling very whingey. 38 weeks today and first time, whilst walking dog, I've thought 'I can't do this anymore'. Feel big and uncomfortable and restless legs were driving me bonkers last night. Still. To be expected at this stage I guess. Onwards and upwards!

fedupofrainydays · 24/09/2014 15:00

Ok will do birth story during one of Rory's mammoth feeds later! It's actually not a bad one - compared to my last one it was brilliant!

Me23 · 24/09/2014 15:10

yellow don't worry about antenatal expression, you are right it is the expulsion of the placenta that triggers milk to come in, you will be fine and will be great for you to have colostrum on hand for baby as you know baby may have some low blood sugars particularly as you are on insulin.

passthewine I'm sorry talk of keillands has upset you, in experienced hands like they were with your baby that can be a great tool, these days like vaginal breech those skills are being lost so I wouldn't risk then in inexperienced hands.

mrsb87 · 24/09/2014 15:12

Just had my 39wk mw appointment. All good, I've gone from baby's head bouncing round the brim on Friday to 4/5 engaged today! Will ring on my due date on Monday for a sweep. I'm now crossing my legs as the new unit opens in my local hospital on Tuesday morning and will save me a 40minute drive in labour to the nearest consultant led unit. It's all newly built with a new birth pool room etc so I'm really really hoping to at least labour in the water. Fingers crossed baby decided to stay put til tuesday!!

passmethewineplease · 24/09/2014 15:17

Don't apologise Me23 I get upset at everything these days. Grin

sazzlehopes · 24/09/2014 15:53

Ok so have midwife appointment tomorrow, my due date is Saturday. Midwife said she'd give me a sweep if I wanted.... So I guess what I'm asking is advice. I'm going for vbac, I have no experience of a sweep. Last baby was 5 days overdue but labour started naturally even if I did end up with csection. Shall I go for it, especially with all the false stuff I've had over the last week, pains, twinges, losing lots of plug, period type cramps. I guess it's worth a shot hey? But always nice to put things past you lot Grin

mrsb oooh fx indeed that you get a nice new place to labour. Sounds wonderful! I see you are having a sweep....would recommend? As much as you can such a thing!!!

Kirstipops · 24/09/2014 16:00

Fantastic Mrsb, the swim must have done the trick! I didn't make it to the pool today, went a walk instead and have spent the afternoon alternating between circling on my gym ball and baking muffins!
That's brilliant too about the OK to labour in the pool etc as well Yellow!
Pregnant I hope your day improved after your crappy morning!
Thanks for the forceps chat, I thought the Keillands ones were the only kind that were used so i feel confident saying a big fat no just to them in my notes now.

mrsb87 · 24/09/2014 16:01

sazzle Same as you, figured I'd give it a go and it's not going to do any harm. Mw said if it works labour should start within 24hrs. My mucus plug went over a week ago, lots of braxton hicks and twinges in my froo!
I went swimming yesterday and did lots of jogging in the pool. Seems that helped baby's head engage!

mrsb87 · 24/09/2014 16:06

kirsti I think I'm going to go for a swim again on Sunday or Monday. It seems to be encouraging things in the right direction! Hmm muffins....I've been threatening to make cookies for weeks and just don't seem to be getting around to it!

ldt87 · 24/09/2014 16:07

Just a quick update from me. My blood glucose levels have come back normal with no further action needed Smile

I really want to be on here and I read a few times a day and I'm also on Facebook, so I am following you all. I just have very little to add and hate to ramble about myself, but I am here!

It's so lovely to hear of all the little babies arriving, making me very impatient to meet my little one, along with a bit of pressure birth trepidation xx

ldt87 · 24/09/2014 16:08

Pre birth trepidation lol

Me23 · 24/09/2014 16:33

passthewine I know the feeling I'm very shouty these days too my poor kids Blush

sazzle at my unit we offer sweeps from 38 weeks for women who want vbac to try to avoid women going overdue and thus avoiding using syntocinon. So 40 weeks is pretty standard to offer sweep on any pregnant woman. I've never got to 40 weeks before but I probably would try a sweep if I get to that point this time.

Missus2ndwife · 24/09/2014 16:45

So I am really annoyed with my acupuncturist! The whole time I have been saying I wanted acupuncture to help with induction naturally and would be looking at starting early (ie from 38 weeks). Today, she tells me she is only allowed to induce from 40weeks - unless there is a medical reason and a letter from my consultant.

Why didn't she tell me this sooner? I probably wouldn't have paid for another 3 sessions up front if I had known this. Gggrr

Anyone else heard this?

binkybunny · 24/09/2014 16:50

So the 'just dropping in' visits from church people have started. I was sat happily sketching dress patterns and watching Downton in my top and knickers, no bra on when the doorbell goes. Thankfully grabbed a pair of trousers on my way to answering! She wasn't staying but managed a cup of tea and some flapjack I'd just taken out of the oven.

It's nice having visitors but wish she'd called in advance, I can just see what it's going to be like when the baby arrives!

mrsb87 · 24/09/2014 17:07

binky I can't stand those type of visitors! I like to mentally prepare for people visiting and that would just upset my brain if they just showed up like that! I've already warned dh that I don't really want visitors for the first 3-4 days at least. Ideally a week. I've said only his parents and my mum in the first few days and certainly not his sister!

MundayCakes85 · 24/09/2014 17:14

Sazzle I've agreed to a sweep on Monday when I'm 40+1 as I don't see that it'll do any harm. And with a proper exam I'll know where we are.
Thanks for the info on forceps- if I deliver at the MLU they don't use any intervention but it's good to know.
Having lots of pain in my lady bit every time I get up/ walk, heard a very loud crack when I got up in the night- nice!
Good luck Porcito looking forward to hearing your news

FlipFantasia · 24/09/2014 17:38

Sazzle when I was vbacing I had a sweep on the due date, labour started the next day and dd was born the following morning. So for me, if it's offered, I'll take one again (having said that, I had 3 sweeps between 40-42 weeks with dc1 and was still induced at 42 weeks!).

fedupofrainydays · 24/09/2014 18:11

Anyone heard from cj or slide? Hope you and babies are both ok - thinking of you.

Just took My new ds out for a spin in the city mini gt we bought. Really like it! And I can turn it with one hand (revelation after my previous buggy!)
