I'd happily (well not happily as it would involve cutting my bits and that's not a source of joy Hmm , but I'd have them if indicated) have normal forceps - its the long armed keilland forceps I refuse point blank.

Keillands are used to turn the baby when they are very high up but they're a blunt instrument - babies can get facial and eye injuries (the doctor has to work blind in terms of placing the forcep cups) and there have been cases of broken necks where they've been used, particularly where there's cord entanglement or another reason as to why baby is malpositioned. As Goats said there's also some nasty risks for Mum too. I'd opt for a CS over keillands. As for ventouse - it got J out so very definitely not useless!

Goats at the BF cafe why not just start chatting about current affairs - am sure lots of the mums would enjoy a change of topic. Ours has always been a place for political debate, green activism etc - as well as BF advice.

Porcito good call on seeing the doc - lots of luck xxxxxxx

cabster · 24/09/2014 08:44

Good luck today porcito!

Congrats on reaching your milestone mamami, must be such a relief!

38 weeks today and my brain has turned to sludge. Spent 10 minutes lying in bed silently swearing at whichever neighbour's burglar alarm was going off... Then realised it was my own Blush not burglars luckily, just a power cut!

Right! I'm making good on my threat promise to ask about batch cooking. I've got a few recipes and family favourites that I want to make - lasagne, casserole, cottage pie, the usual - but although recipes will usually say that a dish CAN be frozen, there's no advice about defrosting or times/ heats for cooking from frozen. My instinct would be to cook from frozen at gas mark 5 or 6 but for how long? Are there any precooked and frozen dishes which should definitely be defrosted first?

Thinking back to how addled my brain was after DD was born I'm going to tape a list to the fridge with all the cooking instructions for each dish. This cooking thing doesn't come naturally to me (not that you'd know that by the size of my bum Hmm)

TIA Thanks

YellowWellies · 24/09/2014 08:45

Fed up yep keillands are also called rotational forceps.

Urrgh just remembered those horrible post birth sweaty nights when you get an early taster of menopause! Good skills on the efficient uterus! Smile

binkybunny · 24/09/2014 08:49

fed up mat leave starts the day your baby is born, whether you have annual leave left or not, you don't lose your leave though, you just add it on at the end instead.

Has anyone else on here not had growth/ additional scans? I asked the mw how the baby was laying at my last appointment. She had a good prod and poke the baby is definitely head down and 3/5 engaged and said she's pretty sure the baby is sideways, which is normal at this stage I just need to encourage her to turn, so no slouching etc.

I also asked her how much she thinks she weighs and she couldn't really say, possibly 6lb.

I'm quite nervous that I'm going to have a giant back to back baby and they won't know until she's half way out, but I've been told I won't have any more scans as everything is looking fine Confused

YellowWellies · 24/09/2014 09:00

Binky I'm getting growth scans fortnightly and they still won't give me an estimate of weight! They just say baby is average for me - whatever that means!

Ways to spot back to back include lots of kicks / knee movements OUTwards, the bump being relatively soft (as the spine is innermost) and a wee dimple / concave area around your belly button. Also babies naturally rotate during the birthing process so carrying perfectly now is no indication of whether you'll face a b2b. J was perfect LOA until my waters broke when he went b2b DESPITE me being on hands and knees. I think in our society we have a view that we have much more control over baby's position than we actually do. There is also a real element of luck too.

ohthegoats · 24/09/2014 09:02

There are people around who will be 'fine' in terms of conversation that is non baby - I live in a big university town, most of the people at NCT work in academia etc, and are far cleverer than me - I'm sure they can sort out a conversation that doesn't involve breast feeding or nappies. Just probably not yet, when I'm the only one who hasn't popped yet, so sort of out of the loop. Makes me terrified about actually being IN that loop though... yawn.

Have decided today's mission is to get some food in that isn't entirely simple carbohydrate or plain old sugar. See if I can get something green down my neck.

Doula emailed back as cross as me about the obs appointment regards forceps - I'm totally 'fine' on normal lift out forceps, but not rotational/Keillands. My hospital killed a baby with them 2 years ago, that will be my main shouty argument if I'm getting pressurised. Boyfriend is primed for this too.

ohthegoats · 24/09/2014 09:04

There is also a real element of luck too.

I think that's the whole thing in general to be honest isn't it! My friend's baby went breech at 41+3 and refused to be moved back. Ended up with a C-section even though all along everything had been fine. Nothing she could do.

Lily31 · 24/09/2014 09:12

fedup you could revert straight to mat leave from when you delivered then bank the annual leave. You were unable to use the a/l so they should be able to carry it over for you.

Lily31 · 24/09/2014 09:14

Hope all goes well today Porcito

kittyvet · 24/09/2014 09:22

binky I haven't had any scans since 20 weeks either. Are others getting scans because of GD or because they measure up too small or too big? My bump normal size and my midwife says head down with back to right by palpating. Will be dead gutted if baby rotates b2b in labour as have spent last 5 weeks sitting upright on sofa or lying.. No slouching and just really fancy reclining back for once!
Don't fancy the sound of those Keillands!! Dragon of midwife at my antenatal class (same one who incorrectly informed my physiological third stage had higher risk of retained placenta!) said you shouldn't put no forceps on birth plan as sometimes they use them during Caesarian. Think I might add 'no Keilland forceps vaginally' to my birth plan.. So thanks ladies for the heads up on that!

Pregnantagain7 · 24/09/2014 09:24

porcito good luck for today how everything goes well.

I just puked on the school run :( at the traffic lights I projectile vomited out of the door then just kept driving with dd2 saying mummy why did you be sick on the road? I cried all the way there and back I'm so over this pregnancy now :(

God I'm a cheerful cow at the moment feel like all I do is moan on here, I've got lovely fil (not) coming over to walk the dogs in a bit I usually go out yo avoid him but can't face it today.
He came yesterday I had one of my best friends over who had just found out she was pregnant which is a disaster for her and was sat sobbing on my sofa so he came and sat and joined us for an hour going on about cilla bloody black!! She was just like wtf?!! Oh well onwards and upwards today can't be worse than yesterday Grin

Hope everyone is having a good day :)

Missus2ndwife · 24/09/2014 09:28

Cabster re batch cooking and freezing: I would either bring out early and let come to room temp before cooking, or cook straight from freezer on a low heat to begin with.
Are you using casserole pots or foils to freeze food in? If a casserole pot, then do make sure you can freeze/ defrost them successfully before putting in the oven. I have read that some casserole pots do break if frozen and placed immediately in the oven.

What is on your list to cook?

Pregnantagain7 · 24/09/2014 09:29

Oh and having had two back to back labours I would say that they can turn even during labour. One of mine did and one didn't. I would say of they say it's back to back while you're in labour and you were maybe thinking about having an epidural go for it.
I found the benefit of this was being able to give the baby more time to turn. When I got to ten cms with both we left in an hour before I started pushing to give the baby time to turn not something you can do when your in pain but was very useful for me.

YellowWellies · 24/09/2014 09:41

Pregnant that's excellent advice and something I'll definitely be doing this time if baby goes b2b. He or she is consistently ROA despite me sleeping on my left so I'm not convinced s/he will be perfectly positioned on the day. Its the exhaustion from the frequency and pain of the contractions which often leads to intervention as without serious pain relief the thought of resting for an hour to allow baby to move, whilst having b2b contractions isn't often very realistic.

binkybunny · 24/09/2014 10:04

pregnant that's what I'm scared of, I'll be a 20 minute ambulance ride away from an epidural Shock On the plus side I'm also the same away from long handle forceps you're all talking about!

Can't remember who said about not reclining, but my mw said reclining is fine, it gives the baby lots of space to move around, just not slouching as this creates the dip for them to get their back into.

After having a total self pity day yesterday, I'm pleased I've woken up in a lot more positive mood. Heading to our local fabric shop today and I'm going to make some pinafore dresses. I can do it sitting down so shouldn't make me so knackered!

ohthegoats · 24/09/2014 10:14

I was going to do paperwork filing today binky, but now you've said that I'm going to do some sewing instead. Yes... maybe being creative will make me feel better.

Pregnantagain7 · 24/09/2014 10:18

Ha ha binky that's very true about the forceps!

yellow seriously it was the best thing ever I actually had a little snooze! But if anyone had suggested waiting an hour when I was was fully dilated with my first labour there would have been no chance! And she wasn't even back to back.

JellyBeansHaveNoAgeLimit · 24/09/2014 10:18

Morning Ladies (and man!). I have no internet at home now and 25 pages to catch up on which isnt going happen! Hope everyone is doing OK, I hope I havent missed any new births! Good luck Portico, you get to meet your baby soon Smile

Birth pool and home birth kit arrived on Monday and we tested the pool out last night. Took over an hour to fill just over 3/4 of the way full & the hot water ran out which is a bit of a bummer but I think with some pans on the hob at the same time we should be OK. All getting very real now!

JellyBeansHaveNoAgeLimit · 24/09/2014 10:22

Just spotted the most recent roll call, looks like I've missed a few births! Congratulations to all the new mummies and daddies Grin

ohthegoats · 24/09/2014 10:25

I would love to have a home birth. The thought of getting in to bed afterwards, boyfriend getting into bed with us too (instead of being sent home to drink whisky on his own), no strangers coming along to manhandle my boobs... sigh...

fedupofrainydays · 24/09/2014 10:29

Rory was b2b and was getting all the contractions in my lower back. Forgot to ask if he turned in labour but mw who examined me said he could so got me on the ball leaning over the bed. As he was early and my second baby there was room to turn. I asked DH which way did he come out but he can't remember!

I just remembers him being passed through my legs and handed to me - amazing!!!!

Happy to offer more details of my birth if people want it but not always sure people want to know!

Kirstipops · 24/09/2014 10:34

I vote yes to your birth story, I love reading them :)

YellowWellies · 24/09/2014 10:41

Goats no one touched my boobs and I had four MW helping me to BF - don't stress about that. They'll show you how to do it yourself if it really makes you uncomfortable - just say. You being uneasy or unhappy in a situation won't help with BF so just say you'd like a hands off demo.

Me23 · 24/09/2014 11:00

portico best of luck for today!

Re forceps/ventouse agree with yellow in that I am refusing keillands but whilst I would prefer not to have ventouse or lift out forceps I wouldn't refuse them as by that point baby would be too low in birth canal and head would have to be pushed back up to do a c section which can be dangeous. Also I have seen some lovely ventouse births with intact perineums or a natural tear (no need to automatically do episiotomy)
Also anyone who says there are no risk to baby from ventouse or forceps are not correctly informed there are risks in all forms of birth to simply state there are none is just wrong.

Also agree with the luck element in regards to position and labour/birth some people obsess about never slouching or doing all the "right" things to have an easier birth then feel so deflated and blame themselves when it doesn't happen. After all I have seen I have a much more laid back attitude I relax on sofa when I need to!

pregnant what a horrible morning for you, hope you are feeling a bit better now.

I've been in an awful mood this morning, kids were playing up trying to get everyone ready and out for school/nursery was a nightmare then Ds wAs inconsolable when I went to leave him at nursery saying "please mummy take me home with you" I feel horrible and very guilty today. He has a full time place so 9-3:30 but I'm wondering if I should have put him part time 9-12 it would mean my day is spent back and forth to school runs 3x a day with a new baby in tow too, I wouldn't get any time at all to nap (hopeful for a baby that sleeps more than 20 mins at a time)

ohthegoats · 24/09/2014 11:02

Definitely yes to birth stories. I don't even mind the aaagh ones - it's good to be prepared!
