Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Kirstipops · 21/09/2014 18:44

fedup that's a shame but as others say it's good it's been caught so fast and hopefully you'll be home before too long!

How many changes through the night does a newborn baby tend to need? I like the sound of this input/output duties idea :)

cabster · 21/09/2014 18:49

So sorry fedup, hope it isn't for too long Sad

goats my DH announced that when DD cried he would "reason with her"... If you see him, do ask him how that's working out ;)

I am such a moody cow today. Was weepy and overwhelmed yesterday and tonight I got into a furious rage over some burnt fish fingers. And eating my dinner gave me a stitch. I'm sitting completely still FFS! Anyone got any happy hormones I can borrow for the rest of the evening? Confused

fatpony · 21/09/2014 18:53

Cabster, check out newborn videos on YouTube - DH and I were pissing ourselves the other night at one clonking itself in the face with its hand and another one waking itself up by farting....

My brother and sister in law gave us loads of baby stuff this weekend including a Medela swing pump. My sis in law only used it a few times and bought it new. What do you guys think about using it (after cleaning) etc or is it a big no no? They are so expensive new!

cabster · 21/09/2014 18:53

And yellow I don't see why expressing can't lead to jiggy... You're the buxom milkmaid, he's come to inspect your pails... Blush

sazzlehopes · 21/09/2014 18:54

Oooh binky sounds promising. Keep us posted.

The competitive tiredness was pretty much the only, but evil rows we had last time. There is a reason sleep depravation is used as a form of torture remember. I expect help at night when I ask, but if I can do it then I'm happy to as long as it doesn't get bad. Everyone parents differently, but id certainly set out guildelines now before things get heated in the sleep deprived other side!!!

cabster · 21/09/2014 18:55

Good idea! Some beautiful babies been born so far, that sounds just what I need.

If the pump has only been used a few times and you can clean and sterilise all the milky bits, I say go for it!

fedupofrainydays · 21/09/2014 19:01

Just feel so sad that it's come up again so high to need treatment. Doing blood tests as well to check if underlying issue.

Feel very tired and drained by it all. Was enjoying being back home as a family.

8 days yellow? That's a lot. I think we will be in here another couple of days at least now til they are sure it's going down.

Can't help but feel sick with worry

YellowWellies · 21/09/2014 19:09

Fed up I think they are extra cautious on Orkney because its so remote and there is no facility to give an emergency blood transfusion - in bad weather it simply wouldn't have been possible to get the air ambulance to Aberdeen. Hence they go a bit belt and braces!

Sazzle DH is the same - if I need help I only need ask. It really defused a lot of arguments knowing we were on the same side.

As for how many changes a newborn needs - initially it could be 2-3 a night (once he was on milk - less on colostrum) as many as 5 on the worst nights but very quickly it settles down to 2 then 1 and no poos at night. There is a saying that some BF babies do 7 poos in a day and others poo once every 7 (but god when they do!). By about 3 months night wakings needing a change were very rare for j but its very much baby specific.

YellowWellies · 21/09/2014 19:10

Pony I'd use it - the medela is awesome!

binkybunny · 21/09/2014 19:14

Aww fedup sorry to hear you're back in hospital again. Try and stay positive (easier said than done I know)

With night feeds etc, we're going to try and do it so DH does a feed late evening so I can go to bed first and get a few hours sleep, I'll do middle of the night and unless I'm awake full of milk anyway, he'll do the early morning feed as he's up at 5am for work anyway. That's the basic plan but we'll see how it works in reality.

DH does 11-12 hour days and drives 25 miles each way, so I don't really want him getting up in the middle of the night, apart from weekends, holidays and pat leave!

sazzlehopes · 21/09/2014 19:51

Awww fedup I hope you get out again soon. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. I'm glad you are being looked after though.

Yes yellow exactly. I feel no bother asking and expect because I have asked that I actually really do need the help as I've managed ok before. Id say we had a 70/30 parenting thing when they are little but now ds is over 3 and a half it's much more 50/50 and probably when baby comes will tilt more dad duties as I can look after/bf the new one. I used to expect a total 50/50 thing and thought everything had to be absolutely FAIR. But I realise that is actually unrealistic for us at the beginning. Husband works really long days and travels far and I'm grateful he does do that so I can not work for as long as I need to...

CellyD · 21/09/2014 20:54

Fedup sorry you're back in hospital, hopefully you won't have to stay long and like others have said, it's better to be cautious.

Binky fingers crossed, it all sounds promising.

Can I ask all the Mums who BF and expressed for a bottle so that DHs and DPs could help out with the 11pm / midnight feed, when did you introduce the bottle? I breast feed but never successfully introduced a bottle. Even at the stage of weaning off the boob, we had to introduce an adult mug as DD wouldn't use a bottle or beaker. I'd like to have the bottle as a fall back option as having had one non sleeper, I'm keen not repeat the mistakes we made last time.

YellowWellies · 21/09/2014 20:59

Sazzle realistically that's how it worked for us too. DH certainly was 50:50 in terms of willing and that is what really counts and made such a difference emotionally - if he were making excuses not to help I'd have gone mad. With comfort feeds I'd easily be up 2-3 hours a night whereas DH might only be up 20 minutes max but if asked he was always ready to help. He'd not have dared try to "out-tired" me and knowing I could rely on him was as important as actually getting him up to help oftentimes. Knowing I could ask for help and that he'd cheerfully give his all was often all the support I needed at 3am.

My sister went thru reflux / undiagnosed CMPI hell and 18 months of 4+ night wakings without her crap husband's help. Ultimately it split them up as she realised he'd always put himself first - to this day he describes the first 9 months of his son's as sheer hell and 'utterly not worth it' - and bar the first two days when she was discharged from hospital after an emergency section he never had to do one night waking - my sister was hallucinating from months of

YellowWellies · 21/09/2014 21:03

CellyD the hospital introduced one to J on day 3 (he was syringe fed until that point) BEFORE he managed to BF but we had to get fluids in to flush out the jaundice. I was really worried about nipple confusion but he was such a boob fiend it worked out OK. He began rejecting the bottle at 12 weeks and eventually wouldn't take one. I went on to BF to 18 months.

Missus2ndwife · 21/09/2014 21:04

Celly - I asked the bf nct lady this question on Friday as I'm hoping to express to allow DH to help out.
Apparently you need to wait 4-5 weeks before introducing bottles and baby won't take the bottle from you as it will smell your milk.

Hope this helps x

binkybunny · 21/09/2014 21:09

Thanks for the wishes but looks like another false alarm. Tightenings have stopped and am just generally uncomfortable, however my bump does seem to have dropped very low Shock Just having lots of foot rubs from DH as having horrible restless legs and feeling meh.

gunwalloe · 21/09/2014 21:13

Flip I could remember they kept asking if I had been to the toilet but couldn't remember if it was a number 1 or 2 they were concerned about :)

fedup Sorry you and the littleun have ended back in the hospital

I've got hospital tomorrow for the required pre op bloods then the CS on Tuesday eeeeek

Captain are you all ready for Tuesday? I've still got to pack my bag

OP posts:
fedupofrainydays · 21/09/2014 21:27

I didn't want Rory to have a bottle on day 1, for this reason - he hadn't latched on yet. So they cup fed him then through a tube.

With ds1 i was really struggling with the lack of sleep so we introduced one expressed bottle or milk a days that DH did at about 2/3 weeks and he was fine to still take the breast.
Friends who left it much later struggled with their child not taking the bottle when they wanted to go out!

So he's back under the lights - going to be another long night

sazzlehopes · 21/09/2014 21:51

I think we introduced a bottle at 8 weeks. It was a battle though, I didn't enjoy it. Ds screamed at it but eventually took it and it was no prob then on just one bottle a day....until we wanted to up the bottle feeds around 7 months I think.

Yellow your sisters husband sounds like an arse. Poor thing dealing with that. I have a friend and her husband recently called his son a bellend for waking him up in the night. He's 16 months and they are due their 2nd child in a few weeks... It was a planned 2nd pregnancy. I know we all have off days where we'd like to scream about things but i thought his choice of wording was horrid. Ummm he's a baby, not even really a toddler and they do tend to wake you up. Why are you having another if you're so cross with your first??!!! Hmm very odd. I felt uncomfortable listening to him describe how annoying it was for him....

CJ glad to hear you sounding a bit more positive and fedup so sorry hes back on bilibed. My DD was on it for first few days of her life and I remember well how stressful it was especially the effect it has on feeding. Hopefully it won't be long until he's off again and you can get back to family life.

Gun I'm pretty much ready, just a few more things to pack and organise. I've been feeling very calm but started to feel a bit apprehensive today so hoping the pre-op tomorrow will make me feel more reassured again. So very relieved the pregnancy is nearly over though - he just seems to be getting bigger and bigger and I feel like there's hardly room to breathe anymore. Hope you're feeling ok.

YellowWellies · 21/09/2014 22:44

Buggerlugs its only for a very short period of time (unless there's an underlying issue like reflux) but yeah anyone who has a baby to strengthen a relationship needs their head examined - it can long term but the short term is tough and if the cracks are showing in pregnancy then a heart to heart before baby arrives would be my advice - afterwards you'll never have as much time to devote to really talking and listening to each other without interruption. Set expectations now too before sleep deprivation, physical recovery and hormones are in the mix!

I do remember a few early days looking in a daze at all of the twee idyllic baby things I'd bought and thinking why didn't I realise before that none of this would matter - only sleep! But before you know it you are out the other side. J was born end October - we were in a decent sleep groove by end December / early January.

ohthegoats · 21/09/2014 22:56

Boyfriend is convinced 'it'll be shit' until Christmas - I just don't think he quite thought he'd be dealing with as much of the 'shit' as me considering I'll be off work. I have no doubts about his wanting to think he'll be 50/50 - he's talked all along about me being able to go back to my mountain climbing with mates, or going to Glastonbury with other mates, while he has the kid etc. He's just so precious about sleep (and is having a particular problem at the moment, so it's weighing on his mind along with also having a crap time at work), that I think he just blurted out (slightly laughing) 'I don't care where the nightlight is, I'll be in the other room' when I was sorting out the crib stuff earlier. Smile was wiped off his face pretty damned quick when he clocked the look on my face when I just replied 'First two weeks you're in here with me, no escaping, don't expect me to know what I'm doing... I'll need your help, whatever time of day or night'.

It won't take long for him to realise that being at home isn't just 'being at home' like it is right now, so once the shock has worn off I'm sure he'll be fine. I've spent quite a lot of time around newborns, 'rescuing' my sister in law from awful afternoons etc, and I'm panicking about it. He's just a little more naïve than me!

ohthegoats · 21/09/2014 22:58

Oh, and the period pain is BACK.. duh duh duuuuuuuh...

Yeah, I'll be taking a paracetamol.

ohthegoats · 21/09/2014 23:04

would only sleep on me in a sling (with me walking!) or in a moving pushchair

One of the colicky nephews only slept when his arms and legs were hanging either side of an arm/hand (he was tiny) - my brother would lie there in bed with his arm held up with loads of pillows for hours just trying to get the hanging position right so the kid would sleep. At around 3 months I remember him crying at my mum and dad's saying that they'd ruined their lives having the second baby. He's a lush kid now though.
