Is anyone else planning a home birth? I had an unplanned one with DD as things happened fast at the end and I ended up delivering her on my own - OH had gone to take DS to his mum's, and the MW didn't get there in time. It was pretty scary, but luckily she was fine. I loved being able to have a bath and get into my own bed afterwards, and thought I would go for the same again this time, but with a MW present!

But, we've moved since my previous pregnancies and now live in a small town about 30 mins from the hospital I'd be transferred to if something went wrong. Is this too far? The MW was very supportive of a HB when I spoke to her at my booking appointment, but OH is worried about something going wrong and being so far from the hospital. I know I would be transferred at the first sign of problems and the MWs are very watchful about that sort of thing, but what if something happened right at the end? You see them pressing the red button on OBEM and the mum being rushed to surgery super-fast - well that would obviously take a hell of a lot longer if I was being transferred.

Just wondered whether anyone had any words of wisdom? Should probably have started a new thread really!

Unfortunately I'm one of those cases that if I had been at home, me or ds may not be here so I can honestly say I will never have a home birth (through choice obviously). However I know many people who have had successful and lovely home births. 30 mins from hospital is quite a long way from the hospital, but if your midwife is happy for you to have a home birth, and you're low risk, I see no reason why you shouldn't have the birth you want!

I'm one of those annoying high risk women, jealous that other women have nice birth experiences Wink

BlueberryWafer · 23/10/2014 20:24

Also, ignore OBEM - they also make out it takes about 3 pushes to get a baby out...Grin

lotsoftoast · 23/10/2014 20:33

You don't spend your life staying within 30 minutes of the hospital in case you have an accident do you? Smile There's more chance you'll have a car crash than have a home birth go dangerously wrong. Home birth is the safest option for low risk second time mums

fish! I think they're kinda freaky too BUT DH wants one and I figure any excuse to see my LO. I also want a double check on the gender.

My cousin's wife showed me hers and I just thought 'eugh!' But ahe says it looks very like her son and also it might be different when it's your own!?!?? I shall report back in due course.

Let's get to twenty weeks first!

fishfingerSarnies · 23/10/2014 21:39

Just went to check on my dd to find her in bed wearing her wellies. She only went into a bed the other day and keeps getting out.

Lifeisabeach Home birth is one of those divisive topics that rally get some people hot under the collar. I guess it's hard for either side to ague their position without sounding judgmental of the other.

I couldn't do it, but I know that for most people who do it's a wonderful experience. I guess I just look around at my immediate circle of friends and family and think about how we would have coped (Maybe we're all a bit weak, but I'd be down about 4 friends + my SIL + my Mum, my son and I'd probably not have survived my first birth either). In no way does this change the actual risk to you and I'm sure your midwife will give you plenty of good advice about whether you're a good contender for a home birth.

It sounds like you managed the first time without medical assistance!! Grin

Primaryteach87 · 23/10/2014 22:55

I'm not sure what my criteria are for pushchair, possibly part of the problem!
We have a big hall and car boot but I might use it in the bus too but think I might use a sling/carrier for public transport.

What should I be thinking about?! Thanks.

broodymamma · 23/10/2014 23:39

Hi ladies, I would like to join you on this wonderful, scary and miraculous journey to motherhood. I am mum to 4 girls aged 6,5,3,1.5. My EDD is 25/03/15. I had a midwife appointment today. She was so awful I was left wondering why she had chosen to go into a profession where surly a basic requirement should be someone kind and patient. When I mentioned that I was concerned about the fact that I am 18 weeks and haven't felt any movements, her response was that by 18 weeks you should feel movement. lets just say I didn't feel reassured at all. What have your experiences been with your care team?

Jannywannywoohoo · 24/10/2014 00:10

Did anyone see that report tonight on watchdog about the cosatto giggles pram? It collapses with the baby in!! Quite a scary thought....!

SurfsUp1 · 24/10/2014 00:28

Broody welcome!! So many newbies coming out of the woodwork!! Where have you all been hiding!? Wink

Jannywannywoohoo · 24/10/2014 07:18

Sorry about my random pram post..... I thought I'd reached the end of the thread but I was a couple of pages back!

lifesabeach hats off to you on your first home birth. I would have freaked delivering on my own! Also I don't think the MW would support a home birth this time around if she didn't feel that it was a safe option for you.
Rainbow555 re: exercise. I'm still teaching seven classes of Zumba a week!! Luckily three of those are 'gold' classes (for the over 50's) which actually is fab exercise for pregnancy. I think I'm going to have quite a few knitted/crocheted items for baby from the class goers! Wink

broodymama wow just wow! I'm here stressing about how I will cope with one baby and you're onto no5! I shall be looking out for nuggets of wisdom from you for sure! I do think from my limited experience having a good rapport with the MW really does help to put you at ease. Sorry to hear that you're dealing with a miserable one.... Do you have the option of seeing a different one? I'm consultant led (high risk due to age and medical probs) and have a core team of 4 MWs, I've met 3 so far... 2 were fab the other was going through the motions. But the consultant is on another level!
His opening line was 'you're 42 ?? You're f*ed!!! Shock Me and hubs we're gobsmacked!!! He obviously knows how to read people because we thought it was hilarious.... The MW with him was full of apologies for his fruity language haha! But I have to say the guy knows his stuff and is fantastic!

SurfsUp1 · 24/10/2014 07:34

Rainbow re exercise, I work out with a trainer a couple of times a week (weights, body weight stuff, light cardio etc) and I want to get into some pilates or yoga if I can find a good class and once things warm up I'll start swimming. I was surfing until a few weeks ago and I'm really missing that!

Last pregnancy I was doing bugger-all exercise as I was so exhausted from looking after my DS1 who was still basically a baby.

I reckon walking and pilates are perfect during pregnant - no need to push yourself, especially if you're tired!

BlueberryWafer · 24/10/2014 07:35

I'm consultant led too, Janny Smile mine is lovely too, although I'm jealous as yours sounds amazing! Grin

When choosing our prams last time the main things we took into account were was how easy it was to put up and down in a hurry, if it was forward and backward facing and how light/easy to push it was (we live at the top of a massive hill).

BlueberryWafer · 24/10/2014 07:37

Oh and as for exercise, aside from a gentle stroll with the dog and running around after 17 month old ds, none - I have really bad hyperemesis and getting out of breath actually makes me vomit (lovely, I know). Last pregnancy my hyperemesis eased off at 18 weeks so I did the aqua-natal classes at my local pool.

Ooh and double posting is exercising my fingers!! Blush

Miffy79 · 24/10/2014 08:58

Hey m33r yeah I will try to add a scan pic when I get to my scanner to put it on the pc.. its currently buried in the spare room tho!

I'm definitely considering a 4d scan as a wee momento before Xmas, but not sure if having an anterior placenta will make it more difficult to see anything? Anyone know?

Exercise-wise, I am walking a lot and doing a bit of pilates.. starting pregnancy yoga and pre-natal fitness classes next week, so will see how that goes. I really want to go swimming too but haven't got round to it yet.. not sure I'll fit in my current swimsuit!

theonewiththenoisychild · 24/10/2014 09:09

janny yes i saw it Sad awful. and such a shame because i love it in treet and in oaker patterns. the oaker pattern hasnt been involved in the recall but i think i will avoid ANY cossatto pram pushchair or buggy at all. cant trust the brand cany buy their products. i had seen it before as saw the giggle in treet and wanted it. a quick google for reviews soon put me off

Lifeisabeach · 24/10/2014 10:13

Thanks for the thoughts on home birth girls. It was my second child that was born at home, not my first. Ironically, first time around I planned a home birth and hired a pool, but when my waters broke early in labour they contained meconium and that was taken as a sign of baby being in distress, so I had to transfer in. Labour was very long, he was back to back, but it all went ok in the end and being in hospital wasn't as bad as I'd feared.

Then second time I planned to go to hospital and ended up having DD at home!

I will keep an open mind for now and I might take OH to my 28 week appointment so the MW can give her opinion to him directly. I am low risk and my other births were straightforward, so I am leaning towards home birth, but there is also a midwife-led unit that is supposed to be really nice, so I'll see if we can have a look around that too.

Welcome to broodymamma. Wow, 4 girls! Are you planning to find out whether it's going to be 5 girls?

I'm not doing a lot of exercise at the moment and really need to up it a bit, even if it's just walking. Or I might get a pregnancy DVD maybe. I played netball until 10 weeks but haven't done a lot since.

Surfsup, I can't wait to go surfing again next summer. We're going to the coast for a few days next week and I'll be jealous if the waves are good and OH gets to go in the sea.

Gudgyx · 24/10/2014 11:39

I feel bad now, I'm not doing any exercise whatsoever!

Anyhoo, had my 20 week scan yesterday, and all is well with our baby girl :) I'll try attach a pic.

Dont think we'll be going for the 3d scan. I'm having growth scans fortnightly from 30 weeks due to my mediciation, so that will do. Plus we want to keep what she looks like a surprise (its the only surprise left now we know the sex!)

Keep thinking about girl names now, we've thought of some more. Arianna, Hailey, Chloe, Lucia and Luciana. I really wanted Summer, but I watched Jeremy Kyle the other morning and one of the chavvy girls on stage named her baby Summer and its put me off :(

persepolis123 · 24/10/2014 13:38

Welcome to all the newbies. Lovely to have you all on board.

keeper that sounds an absolute nightmare. Don't think I could handle all those stairs.

gudgy I love Arianna and Lucia. All of those names are very pretty though.

blueberry It did only take me 3 pushes with DS! But that was after a 55 hour labour so I think I deserved an easy end to it.

Lots of us with scans on Wednesday then. I’m on countdown now. Sooo excited!

I had to go into DS’s nursery today and have a chat with his key worker. I told her he has a little brother or sister arriving in March and she is going to encourage him to look after the dolls at nursery, feed them etc and said he can even help them out with feeding the real babies!

Gudgyx · 24/10/2014 13:47

I've put on a stone in 8 weeks :( arrgghhhh!!!!

fishfingerSarnies · 24/10/2014 13:55

God I'm so bloody fat, fully intended to do loads of exercise this pregnancy buuuuut I've not done any, I get out of breath just walking up the road. I did have quite an intense work out with a large slice of cake today!

fourmonthstogo · 24/10/2014 13:57

Gudgy Arianna is so lovely, it was on my list. Can't really use it now we know it's a boy I guess!
As for exercise, still doing body pump, body balance, going to the gym and swimming once a week. Last time I managed to keep doing pump until the end of month 7, balance end month 8 and swimming throughout. Not sure I'll be able to keep doing pump so long this time but we'll see! I'm clearly not as fit as i was 4 years ago!
I've looked at the uppababy, everyone seems to love them. But there are hundreds round here its putting me off a bit- but I guess that's also a sign of how good they are!
