Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
JammyTodger · 16/08/2014 19:11

I sold our brilliant pram just a few months ago, after hanging on to it for 5 years. It was such a wrench as the carrycot had served as DS's bed for his first 6 months, but as my GP told me I was more than likely going through the menopause I decided to get rid of every last bit of baby stuff. Less than 3 months later and I got a bfp. Sod's Law at it's best! I just don't want to think about buying another bloody pram now though Sad

ELA88 · 16/08/2014 20:18

DH and I test drove some prams round mothercare and Babies r Us, we both really like the Silver Cross Pioneer, can anyone recommend or rate it or a similar one? I'm such a novice! Xx

MotherOfInsomniacToddlers · 16/08/2014 21:16

My first screamed blue murmur when in a carry cot/ Moses basket, didn't use with second I just used quinny buzz memory foam bit in a lie flat position and my double in the lie flat position. I'll do the same again. Also used a sling quite a bit :-)

MyPandaisasecretmonster · 16/08/2014 21:29

Quick question again

Is it normal to feel so weak all the time ?
I can barely do anything & I'm hardly sleeping either Sad
I don't think I can carry on like this much longer

PickledPorcupine · 16/08/2014 21:49

Panda I'm having a really pathetic few days. Have slept and slept because it's about all I have the energy for and feel really weak all the time. Also have D&V so it's all just been delightful! My dh has been very kindly reminding me that I'm growing a human who is doubling every week so it's understandable for us to be exhausted.

MyPandaisasecretmonster · 16/08/2014 21:54

Thanks Pickled , I've had to send my Ds to my Dms for a few days Blush

PickledPorcupine · 16/08/2014 22:00

Panda Don't feel guilty about it. You're absolutely doing the right thing and he'll have a lovely time while you get some much needed rest.

I've been sleeping loads in the day and then struggling at night. Trying not to get stressed by it and just start reading if I wake up until it makes me fall asleep again. I read from 1-3am last night.

I have spent nearly all day dozing in front of the TV today which is very unlike me but it's been much needed. Just do whatever you need to make yourself feel better.

MyPandaisasecretmonster · 16/08/2014 22:07

Pickled I'm going to try and rest tomorrow so hopefully I manage to , Thankyou

FoscarC · 16/08/2014 22:15

We went pram shopping today. From what I understand you're meant to use a carrycot for the first 6 months or so as they are meant to lay flat. We liked the uppa baby vista and the bugaboo chameleon.

junkfoodaddict · 16/08/2014 22:35

Yes babies are supposed to lie flat - ideally for 6 months but in practise, that isn't always possible. Last time DS didn't like lying flat at 2 months and screamed. Also there are buggies that do not have a carrycot but are suitable for newborns, as long as they lay flat. Graco Evo XT, Mamas and Papas Sola City and Sola 2 are all suitable from newborns. The Sola City has a memory foam (20) to allow baby to be completey flat. I test drove these last week and had in depth conversations. In my opinion a carrycot is a waste of money (some cost over 100) for only a few outings, IMO.

My friend told me to steer clear of icandy as they are big and bulky. Every person I know bought an expensive (500+) pram/travel system such as Stokke, ICandy, Silver Cross, Bugaboo, Jane, Quinny and only used it (iincluding pushchair) until baby was 6/8 months old and then bought a cheap foldaway buggy because their expensive ones were 'too big and bulky'.

I made the mistake of buying secondhand last time (DH was adamant). Bought a Silver Cross linear Freeway, which admittingly would be hypocritical for me to say I loved, but having a saxo meant it didn't fit the boot well! Then we got a Mothercare Urban Detour which was, again big and bulky, and DS never sat right in it. he kept sliding forwards and to the side then the Britax B Agile which has done us 2 years now. We got it because we thought the aeroplane wouldn't take the Urban Detour.

This time I insisted we test drove the buggies and buy brand new. Reasons: DH bought a flag pole and fancy flashing lights for our new Portico. i said if he can afford non essentials, he can afford a brand new buggy. Also I want a brand new buggy that comes with a warranty, does not have scrapes here and there, or studs missing etc, etc and will last us until DC2 is about 3 years old. In testing this theory, I put DS1 into the buggies in pushchair mode as he is tall for his age to see how long the buggies would last.

So far, the Graco Evo is 2cm too wide to fit flat in the boot but will actually fit sideways and probably give us more useable room for other things. The Sola City is exactly the same width as the Britax B Agile which we currently have and fits our Ford B Max.

fishfingerSarnies · 16/08/2014 22:58

I would say travel systems are a waste of money, most people I know were using umbrella buggies by about 8 months, the only thing I see being used and used is the city jogger people seem to love it, I regret not getting it myself , went for the mountain buggy instead which I still use 2 years later but never loved as much as I thought I would.
I'd say parent facing is important too certainly in the early months, even wish I could do it now on long walks so I could chat to my dd without shouting.
Ah I remember the many trips to try out buggies and prams, so much fun.

Pinksun12 · 16/08/2014 23:05

I'm staying at my parents atm so all I'm doing is sleeping and lounging around. Had a lovely nap on the beach today while dh and my mum looked after the kids. I can't figure out if I'm just lazy or if I'm indeed so weak and tired. Ms has pretty much gone and the spotting too so I'm wondering if everything is ok.

Pinksun12 · 16/08/2014 23:12

fishfingersarnies I was thinking about the mountain buggy (as far as I allow myself thinking about prams yet) because we live very rurally and would like a buggy that's good on bumpy paths and the woods. I drive everywhere and ds2 was slung full time until 14 months until I got a second hand Maclaren but not sure if that one will last another three years. What makes you stop loving the mountain buggy completely?

m33r · 16/08/2014 23:12

panda I'm so glad you posted as I also feel totally pathetic - no energy to walk upstairs even. Tonight DH and I were having late lunch (5pm) in pizza express and i completely zoned out - he actually said 'you're not listening are you?' And I realised that I didn't even know he was speaking. Came home and passed out on sofa AGAIN!

Lucky he is also of the 'don't worry you're growing a baby' mentality! Phew!

I'm very impressed with all the pram research - so far I have been out with mum to play around but not done any actual research. Will use this thread as my starting point! Happy weekend everyone.

Surfsup1 · 16/08/2014 23:59

How can it be that babies are supposed to lie flat in a pram, but are totally fine in a sling (which is anything but flat)?

Surfsup1 · 17/08/2014 00:11

Well in an effort to answer my own question I had a little Google and found THIS

Obviously pretty pro-carrying, but quite interesting re the current obsession with lying babies flat (which I suspect is largely a marketing plan to sell pram accessories?)

PickledPorcupine · 17/08/2014 00:29

Thanks for the article surf, really interesting.

Pinksun12 · 17/08/2014 00:38

Lying flat is probably also talked about lots to get people away from using non-flat buggies and bouncy chairs too early/too much?
Here in Germany people are very much aware so buggies are only recommended from 1 year, therefore carrycots are bigger and German prams are monstrous! I think this is changing though as bugaboos are becoming more fashionable and their carrycots won't be able to fit a one year old! Each to their own I think, it's all a bit common sense as well.

God!! I can't sleep!! Can you tell?!

Rainbow555 · 17/08/2014 07:24

Yes! To feeling pathetic! Yesterday morning was so good, I was starting to remember what feeling normal was like, then the afternoon I was so tired. Today has been a disaster, nausea has returned and dry retching has turned to sickness :( and th energy is zero again. So yup feeling pretty pathetic!

Would love to be thinking about slings and prams etc but I just can't yet, just in case! Interesting article thoug surf!

MotherOfInsomniacToddlers · 17/08/2014 07:26

Lots of people do seem to ditch the expensive prams and buy a stroller . It's not compulsory though my 2yo ( who is big for his age and actually only an inch shorter and weighs the same as his 3yo sister) is still using the quinny buzz that I bought for my first or the phil and teds as a single seater, they have had good use and will hopefully last another baby or two. Grin So not always a waste or too bulky

eatscakefornoreasonwhatsoever · 17/08/2014 07:30

surfsup Thanks for posting that article. I am massively pro carrying and thought I was well informed but there was info in that article I was unaware of - especially the spatial awareness stuff.

DS always had people (HVs etc) comment on what a lovely shape his head was. Seems an odd commentunless you really look at babies and see how many have a slightly flattened skull.

eatscakefornoreasonwhatsoever · 17/08/2014 07:31

And fwiw our buggy is a city mini baby jogger. It's great for carrying the shopping whilst the baby sleeps on your front

fourmonthstogo · 17/08/2014 08:13

I've heard that before about people ditching their their big buggies, but it wasn't the case for me or my friends. We only bought an umbrella fold buggy to go on holiday with when dd was 1 1/2, and didn't use it much til she was two. I think it depends on where you live and what you do.
My main buggy was an icandy apple and I loved it. She looked so cosy and warm in the carry cot having been born in winter. It didn't last a full 6 months though, she grew out of it before then. I used a sling for short walks and longer walks in the woods etc, but if going for a long city walks picking up all the shopping I'd use the carrycot then the parent facing buggy. Round here you you don't have to collapse buggies if you go on the bus-bit I'd rather walk when I have lots of time anyway. Yes, the icandy and similar are big, but they are so well designed they handle so well and turn neatly, much better than some cheaper alternatives. It's also handy being able to fit the maxi cosi to the chassis when popping out in the car.
Sadly we weren't originally going to have another so I've got rid of my icandy (in fact I've got rid or pretty much everything including all but 7 of my beautiful nappies! Grrr) so I'm going to have to buy another. But I'm considerably poorer now only working part time so sadly it won't be another icandy unless second hand, and in fairness it is a bit big when trying to pack a cat to go away with 2 dc's, my golf boot isn't that big and the chassis took up a lot of room.
I'm really looking forward to choosing again, that and my new sling. For the buggy I'm thinking oyster2 as it lies flat so no need for the carrycot. I'm not overly concerned about that article and risks of lying flat in her pram, he or she won't be lying flat at home all day anyway.

fourmonthstogo · 17/08/2014 08:14

Wow, that was a mega post! Congratulations to anyone who actually got to the end!

fourmonthstogo · 17/08/2014 08:16

And I meant pack a car, not a cat. Don't think the cat would like that. Silly phone.
