Oh no, Bubble will definitely be sleeping in our bedroom for as long as needed.

I was more meaning "the nursery"/all her gubbins to be shared with my craft room. But they both were all "oh no, she'll need her own space". Even though I would hope to be moving/buying a house before she reaches a needing her own space age. But ah well, I was just trying to get out of sharing my lovely craft/dressing room with a scruffy boy!

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 08/08/2014 22:38

Catface. My baby doesn't have its own space either. It will be in our room. In order to fit it in our room the wardrobe needs to be shifted into the box room, which is really cold so cant house a baby anyway. The other room is shared by a 14 and 11 year old on a weekend. We are full to bursting as it is. Will probably move when we know what we are doing jobs wise. (DP poss changing role to a more mobile one).

TinyMonkey · 08/08/2014 22:40

Oh haha, I thought it was a bit of a weird view! Oh our baby's stuff will be kept in a big chest of drawers in our spare/junk room for ages I reckon. I'm way too disorganised to sort anything else out.

Give it a year and we'll be dressing in a sea of plastic crap, but I'm going to try and keep it minimal for the first few months!

TinyMonkey · 08/08/2014 22:41

*drowning, not dressing.

DillieDoily · 08/08/2014 23:15

You are all very organised with your lists! I need to go into the loft at some point to find all DS's baby stuff that we kept and work it out from there. It would be much easier if we knew the sex but the baby would cooperate during the 20 week scan so we're having another surprise!

Sasseh - the NHS Minor Ailments scheme lets you get free medicines etc for minor conditions direct from your local pharmacy to save you going to your GP about it. All pregnant ladies, children, OAPs, and people with certain conditions can register. When I was pregnant last time I got lots of Gaviscon/Peptac and for my DS I got lots of free Sudocreme, teething gel, infant paracetamol, ibuprofen etc. It's a fab scheme and saved me a fortune. I thought it was nationwide but maybe it is only in Scotland (as all prescriptions are free anyway)

Taura · 09/08/2014 07:13

NHS Scotlamd minor ailments scheme that's really useful to know about Dillie, thank you! I was going to get some Gaviscon today, now it can be free!

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 09/08/2014 07:57

we've got it too in England. Its not very well advertised and it can be difficult to find a participating pharmacy.

Ladylel · 09/08/2014 08:16

Omg I've made a doctors appt for gaviscon ! Amongst other things if I don't have to go that and the pharmacy lets me have it I won't have to bother with the gp.
Is there's handy link?

Bollocks. Sorry.

hanniebabes3 · 09/08/2014 09:33

Loving the lists but slightly panicking I dont have anywhere near what I need!! In work today :( just about to post my matb1 and covering letter, Im planning to start my maternity leave on 1st december, due the 13th, as a first timer will that be enough time? Ive used my remaining holidays to have shorter weeks in november and a long weekend in october so Im thinking its plenty of time xx

CallingAllEngels · 09/08/2014 09:41

hannie I think it depends what your job is. I'm a secondary teacher and one of the subjects I teach is quite physical. I finished at 36 weeks last time and was exhausted from all the moving around school. If your job is in one spot (I.e. a desk) then 38 weeks may be more manageable, but it also depends how you're finding pregnancy.
I am really looking forward to a few days to myself while DS is at nursery. Going to finish 1st December as well and my edd is 28th.

DrewsWife · 09/08/2014 09:42

Im taking mine from 8 November. Decided I want 6 weeks before as it's my 2nd. Hub has 2 weeks annual leave and 2 weeks paternity.

Is there a template letter for how to word it??

I have Brian Adams in Sheffield on 18th November. 5 hour drive. So I want time to drive there slowly. Maybe break it into a couple of days. Then drive back after a couple of days. I'm due 19th.

I pick up my matb1 on the 18th. Yayyyy.

Roonerspism · 09/08/2014 09:42

How do I get a matb1? I have never had one until the last minute when I have had to get it urgently from GP for mat leave. I have a feeling my GP surgery is generally pants as they never give me the baby book you are meant to get, either.

Re mat leave - I stopped at 35 weeks with DC1 and she was 2 weeks late so wasted 5 weeks of v precious mat pay (my employer pays only 8 weeks). So with DC2 I worked to 39 weeks - and she was slightly late.

Plan to do the same again.

But so many babies arrive early too and you want a few days - weeks? - to yourself to rest! My mum and sister tended not to go early so that was all I could go on. Could you ask your mum her experience?

Roonerspism · 09/08/2014 09:43

Oh sorry - I have name changed - I'm the one formerly known as daddy!

SassehMonsta · 09/08/2014 09:53

Im finishing at 34 weeks, DC1. I don't have any holiday left as I am going away in Sept for DH's birthday!! I also have a concert to attend in London on at 35 weeks.. we'll see if Im up for it!

Hugmonster82 · 09/08/2014 09:57

I'm taking mine from 21st nov but with 2 weeks leave before so actually finish on 7th. Less than 3 months! Already struggling with London commute so can't wait. Due on 3rd dec so should have a decent time off unless she's early!
Does anyone know if after a year off I will be able to take my 2015 leave straight away? If so means I will be able to take over 13 months off in one go (or more if I go part time which is the plan) but not sure if it's allowed.

Hugmonster82 · 09/08/2014 09:59

I think you ask for the form at your 25 week appointment. Mine is with my doctor as shared appointments in my area so planning to ask for him to get it ready when I book so I can collect it at my appointment.

CallingAllEngels · 09/08/2014 10:00

And don't panic, you have plenty of time!

DH is starting to clear the baby room today (currently an office). When it's finally empty we're going to redo the floor, put up a new blind and give the walls a lick of paint. Then we'll transfer baby furniture from DS's room (he still has thechest of draws/change table and wardrobe in his room).

Regarding lists, this is what we had before birth (and used)

Cot
Sheets and blankets
Newborn hot waterbottles (standard to have over here in NL)
Large muslin squares (lots of!)

A few packs of newborn nappies (different brands so we could see what we liked)
Wipes
Changing mat and covers for upstairs
Sudocreme
Nappy Pail with liner bags
Changing bag for downstairs and out of house with changing mat

Rompers and sleep suits (had loads 2nd hand from bil and sil plus a few nice newborn outfits that we had chosen ourselves)
Hats

Pram, rain cover, blanket, fitted sheets
car seat with cover/blanket

breast pads
nursing bras
a few bottles and one box of formula
pg pillow for bf

playpen with mobile, quilts
very simple baby bouncer /rocker

we bought our breat pump and bottles the week after ds was born as we didn't know yet if we'd need it or what brand we wanted. In the end I was able to bf though he had some formula the first week as was losing a losing too much weight and my milk was slow coming in. Went over to formula at 6 months and expressed a lot before then, especially when I went back to work.

We didn't bother with a moses basket since we could remove the carrycot from the pram if we wanted, plus we also had the cot upstairs and the raised playpen in the lounge. Lots of others things we already had from ils but didn't really use till much later (e.g. high chair).

As long as they can eat, sleep and be clean when they arrive, they don't need anything else.

Oops! Bath and stand as well!

LisaC2611 · 09/08/2014 10:02

I'm planning on finishing on 21 November but that depends on whether a section is needed or not. Due 6 December. I'm taking the 2 weeks before edd as hol and starting may leave from due date. But then my job is sedentary so the worst is the commute and by then I'll be able to travel first class so should be ok.

Can't believe how many people have got their nursery prepared already! We need to knock a wall down and finish our bathrooms before we can even think about it. Hoping to do a garage conversion before baby arrives too to get hubby out of a bedroom so that we have all the bedrooms free.

We did order our pram, car seat and isofix base last night though an nursery furniture is ordered to arrive on 14 November. Grin

CallingAllEngels · 09/08/2014 10:06

I wish I had had more breast pads and sanitary towels in - I found the Kotex thick, extra soft ones the best, especially if you have stitches as they're so soft.

I found it really ehlpful to have little plastic basketsnat each of my feeding spots (sofa, my bed, chair in nursery room) with the following in:
Watch, clock, phone to keep track of feeding time while bf
book, or magazine
breast pads
small cloths for wiping
lip balm
bottle of water
nipple cream/salve
large muslins

I also had a little notebook to keep track of feeds which I used pretty much the whole 4 months I was on ml with ds. Still have his somewhere!

CallingAllEngels · 09/08/2014 10:08

And the one thing I really want to get is a nappy wrap (changing mat that folds up with a popper/velcro to close and pockets for a few nappies and a packet of wipes) as it was so handy last t I me, but we only had a freebie one which didn't survive to be reused.

CallingAllEngels · 09/08/2014 10:09

Sorry for long/multiple posts! My mind is ticking over atm!

19+6 and only 8 days till 20w scan Smile

hanniebabes3 · 09/08/2014 10:44

I got my matb1 after seeing midwife at 21 weeks, to be honest I am at a desk based job and its 2 miles away from my house so I think I will be fine working until 38 weeks, I only get 6 weeks at full pay so I wanted to try and make that last! I got the template for my letter by googling but Ive lost the web address, I know it was on babyexpert.com, ive cleared all the junk out of the "baby room" just needs plastering and decorating now haha!!
