Jump aboard ladies.

TwigletFiend · 15/08/2014 11:06

That is clearly meant to say 'DP'. Whoops!

weeonion · 15/08/2014 11:10

annarose - i feel your name pain and watch with interest.

We also dislike traditional English, Biblical, Modern. I have quite a strong aversion to certain names (but wont put them here in case they will be the names of choice for anyones DC! Smile )

I want a celtic / gaelic name to reflect our backgrounds and to "fit" with DD's.

I think we are each going to cme up with 4 names. then a short list to be drawn up of all the ones that the 3 of us like and then into a hat they go for pulling out and selection!

my mum and dad couldnt come up / agree with a name for me. both were adamant that grandmothers names were not to be used. they waited til last possible day to be able to register me and then picked the name of the clerk who filled in the forms!!!!!!!!!!!!

weeonion · 15/08/2014 11:12

lol twig - i didnt have to - the poor bugger gets exposed to all that chat from me anyhow Grin

i remember from last time - he was Shock when i shared some topics post birth / labour. i think he has just about recovered Grin, just in time for him to hear it all over again!!!!!

Hopeful83 · 15/08/2014 12:32

Anna - we are also struggling with names massively. We had 4 boys names, but of course are having a girl. For about 16 weeks we have had one girl name which we were both pretty set on, and were just debating whether to double barrell it (this was my compromise as DH likes long names and I figured people would only end up using the first name anyway) and what middle names to use. Then we went for the 4D scan and the bloody chatty receptionist was waffling on while we were waiting, giving her opinion on names, and mentioned the name we had chosen and said it was quite common, so now DH has vetoed our only name! He wants something usual and/or long, as we have a very common surname. I personally am past caring, I just want to have a name to refer to her by (amongst ourselves, we are telling anyone else until after the birth) and to feel settled on something, I don't care if it's common.

So now we have no names at all which we can agree on. He likes modern, often American sounding names, but I want something pretty, traditional-ish, romantic sounding, possibly Italian/Spanish origin. Argh!! Now we have decided to work alone, come up with 10 names each, rank them and see if we have any in common. But I'm struggling to find 10 for my list. I think being a teacher does not help!

Weeonion - have you considered Saoirse? I really like it but DH does not, but it's a beautiful Gaelic name (IMO)

Hopeful83 · 15/08/2014 12:33

Sorry, should say he wants something unusual, not usual

weeonion · 15/08/2014 12:39

hopeful - its a hard process indeed!

i love saoirse but have 2 cousins and a couple of friends with it so too many people around to use it!!

This appeared on my facebook feed earlier. No offence to anyone but when i look at this - not a single name appears on that graphic that i like!

annarose - i have been scouring internet naming sites. i have been copying and pasting but when i show them to dp and dd - there is naws!

This baby may well end up being named kettle, helicopter, digger ( all suggestions from pals 3 yr old son!!) Grin

ladydolly · 15/08/2014 12:45

Annarose and weeonion We had the same problems, I like unusual hippish names (Serafina, Valentina, Anya) he likes the more common names children have at the moment. We both have the initial 'A' and he wanted to give an 'A' name to match but I felt too much like we were kardashian wannabes! We agreed it would be nice to have a welsh names since grandparents on both sides are Welsh or Irish since DP's surname and other grandparents are Irish and so landed on Orla (back up was Ophelia, I love shakespere) but I'm pretty sure he only likes it because it sounds like Isla which he liked.

Just this week he's rejected my 2nd middle name choice of Emmeline. I'm gutted but not sure how far to push it with him... he got to choose 1st middle name after his grandmother but luckily I like it.

Some of those cheesy baby name websites are pretty useful when you can sort by origin as well as letter...

ladydolly · 15/08/2014 12:48

weeonion I'm enjoying lazydaisy, the stretches are good and the class is relaxing. Looking forward to learning a few more breathing techniques in the next few weeks.

It's nice being with a group of pregnant women too, I wasn't sure if I'd like that but the collective sympathy sigh when I told them I'd been sick in my sleep a few times nearly made me cry!

weeonion · 15/08/2014 13:03

aaaaw ladydolly - that groups sounds nice. a bit of collective understanding and sympathy goes a long way... Smile

It can be nice to have an offline group as well as an online group.....

TwigletFiend · 15/08/2014 13:12

I really like Aoife, but DP has rejected it. He likes Evie, which I don't like. Hoping to compromise on Evelyn, which can be shortened to Evie. I also liked Eirlys and Eluned, but they were vetoed too! (Clearly I like 'E' names.)

lady, I am a big Shakespeare fan and really like Ophelia too, as well as Perdita.

DP was incensed at the thought of a potential DS being called Caliban though. It sounds too much like Taliban apparently Grin

blamber · 15/08/2014 13:57

Anna we have the same problem! I'm picky, but my boyfriend is even worse. Names that I think are ok he doesn't like because he already knows someone with that name and he doesn't want that. We've got no names at all. That we both love. We'll have to start going through lists as well I suppose!

Wee onion, oh we talk about a lot worse than sample pots!

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 15/08/2014 14:39

Neither of the names we have chosen are in the top 100 even!

Lyra and Hector.

It wasnt too difficult choosing names as I was open to ideas and DH suggested both of those and I love them. Middle names will probably be Elizabeth and Harry.

PosyFossilsShoes · 15/08/2014 15:08

I'm a big Shakespeare fan too but just no on the Caliban, he's an attempted rapist monster! May as well go with Grendel!

Elliekins · 15/08/2014 15:34

Hello, trying not to get myself in a panic but having been really
flippant and resentful of doing the bloody GTT, I've just had a call from the midwife saying I HAVE got bloody gestational diabetes!
FUCK!
I have been eating a fair bit of crap, white bread, biscuits and sugary tea but generally have been reasonably healthy, haven't had any symptoms, I was only a bit overweight before pregnancy, maybe 6lbs, am measuring spot on for dates, only symptoms are being tired and weeing a lot, but I'm pregnant so that's no bloody surprise.
Am now terrified of having a huge baby prematurely that will grow up to be obese and diabetic herself - am in a massive flap and don't know what to do first other than stick a load of leafy green veg in a blender and boil some brown rice for my dinner.
Help! Confused

TwigletFiend · 15/08/2014 16:40

Posy, I know, but DP has an irrational horror that the Forest of Dean is going to be invaded by machine gun-wielding, pro-Bin Laden extremists and I couldn't resist. I really like the name Tamora too, but the connotations are a bit Hmm!

Ellie, don't panic! I will try and dig up the study I read recently about early and efficient management of GD, but it basically says that some women can almost eradicate the effects through good management, so it's not the end of the world! Did you get some good information and support from your GP/MW?

WorkFreeWannabe · 15/08/2014 18:01

Hello Ladies

Brand here, had to set up a new account as I got locked out.

Also, I've had a few work issues I've needed to get me head round, so the break has been good. Gosh, this thread has moved on so much you chatty bunch!

Thank you to whoever posted the details for Maternity Action. Sadly I missed the closing time so couldn't contact them today; but I managed to speak to ACAS this afternoon who gave me some good news advice Smile.

On the name front I've left it all to DH as he's rubbished everything I've chosen. He likes really traditional, but I don't Hmm. We have a front runner we've kinda agreed on, but I'm not revealing it yet as in DH's culture it's traditional/customary to have a 'naming ceremony' 7 days after the baby is born, where the name is revealed, subject to the 'elders' approval.

Just struggling with middle names, we're having two to satisfy both sides of the family. One is sorted, just mine to sort. Need to speak to my Dad for ideas.

Apologies for the long post, just wanted to catch upon everything. Sorry to those I forgot to name check.

pinkgirlythoughts · 15/08/2014 19:33

I've spent an enjoyable afternoon today looking at the 2013 baby name data, comparing it with last years' (I know, I'm a complete saddo!), and checking out the rankings of all the names we like :)

Strawberryfield12 · 15/08/2014 20:44

Going back to urine sample pots - would not Boots sell them in pharmacy?
At least when years ago I had to do analysis in Spain was told to go to the pharmacy and buy one.

Strawberryfield12 · 15/08/2014 20:54

As for the name I think we are pretty much set. Wrote out the list of OK names acceptable for both, week later went through it and each of us had one name favourite and we don't feel strongly against each others preference either. So DH propose to leave it to the luck, I had to pick one of the papers and it was my favourite!! I am still leaving the door open for when she will be here to see if after meeting her we will feel that the name suits her.
I am set for the middle name, it will represent her 50% of Baltic roots. The name's meaning is for a meadow wildflower which is supposed to have a magic power on midsummer night.

utopian99 · 15/08/2014 22:01

Ooh, sounds awesome strawberry. We were set on ds' s name.from years before he was born and now it's getting really popular which Massively Pisses Me Off. Our girls name for this one is way down the top 100 so will hopefully stay there, although the middle name isn't. Our boys option is nowhere near the list but a great name, so I'm even more torn as to what I might prefer.

Which is good actually in terms of being happy with whoever it turns out to be!

Kantha · 16/08/2014 08:22

Ellie - sorry to read of the GD news. It's not something I know anything about, except that it is fairly common and not a disaster. Hope you feel more positive today.

As for baby names, third time round I know the drill. I pore over baby names for nine months, meanwhile DH refuses to engage in any discussion on the subject until 38 weeks plus. Then he will suggest names based upon whatever sports people are on the TV. With DS1 he googled the WTA (tennis) top 100. It's heavily populated by E Europeans, so lots of suggestions like Elena, Ludmilla etc Grin. For boys names he went through the credits for whichever Grand Theft Auto had just been released, so lots of geek names.

Despite that, both boys have for very traditional names. I love DS1's name as it's very out of vogue these days and sliding towards the no. 200 spot. He is the only one at school and he really likes that. DS2s name was just 'what he looked like' once he was born so he was called that despite it being very popular. He loves it despite/because of there being 5 of them in his preschool. Would prefer something less popular for DC3 which I suspect will be a boy too.

Middle names for us are family names or names with special meaning. Both boys' middle names are pretty rare as a result. My middle name is Elizabeth which I shared with lots of other girls at school. I thought that was very dull. I haven't thought of any good middle names yet. I have been trying to think of something snowy/mountainous as this baby was conceived on a skiing holiday. Lacking inspiration thus far. Grin

I genuinely have no idea what this baby will be called.Confused

TwigletFiend · 16/08/2014 15:39

Afternoon, ladies. Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.

Afraid I'm having a bad day today. DP tactfully mumbled that he was too embarrassed by the state of the house for my mother and sister to visit today Confused. Not sure if I'm more upset because I feel like a failure as a life partner and a slob or angry because he lives here too and some of the mess is his! So instead of painting the skirting in the nursery, I have spent all day deep cleaning the house and am now shattered. Still have my pony to ride, painting to so and tea to cook. Wah! Sad

Anyway, apologies for the whinge. Has anyone bought a baby monitor yet? Looking at getting one this month to ease the load on the budget next month but don't have a clue where to start!

haventgotaclue1 · 16/08/2014 16:48

Haven't bought the monitor yet Twiglet but have researched it and will be getting the BT250.
Have been on a bit of a spending spree today though and am now the proud owner of: travel system, cotbed, chest of drawers/changer, nursery chair and stool (kiddicare closing down sale Grin), 6 muslin cloths, & 2 cotbed mattress protectors. Both me and the bank account are feeling exhausted!

Strawberryfield12 · 16/08/2014 16:52

Ah no twiglet! That's not very nice of him at all. I think he deserves a good slap or two with a mop! Since when it is you on your own who has to keep the house clean?! Especially now! Arghh Angry

amy83firsttimer · 16/08/2014 17:54

I got a baby monitor for a tenner from a Facebook selling group that's very very local. It's a tommy tippee sound and motion one with the pad under the mattress. I was probably not going to have one at all otherwise so I definitely wouldn't have bought one new for a hundred quid!
