Franks my hospital protocol is that any induction or section before 39 weeks means you have to have steroid injections for the baby's lungs. The doctor at clinic said it's not common elsewhere (or necessary!) but it's just their procedure unfortunately. I'll be 38+4, had DS via induction at 38+1 without them and he was fine. This hospital is very 'rule heavy' though, such as trying to put the largest cannula in me when I was admitted for dehydration at 29 weeks. My veins kept collapsing and I ended up with about 12 wound sites. The reason? Because their protocol dictates everyone on delivery suite needs largest needle in case of bleeding etc for easy access. Took a senior doctor to intervene and remind them that I wasn't actually in labour so a smaller needle would be fine, and in fact clinically necessary in my case! You get the picture.

It can be annoying but I'll go along with it this time cos I want this all over with asap!

regularbutpanickingabit · 02/12/2014 19:49

The whole steroid thing was a shock to me, too! I thought it was just for pre-37 weekers but apparently the rules have now changed on what they consider term.

So, 37 weeks is early term, 39 weeks - 42 weeks is term. Anything needed to happen before 39 weeks therefore means they need to treat the baby as having immature lungs.

The midwife explained that when a baby is born vaginally then all that useful squeezing that goes on with contractions taking it through the birth canal will also squeeze out and help the lungs. When there is a csection or an early induction then that hasn't happened.

This means the baby can usually massively inflate it's lungs for the first breath but when the lungs deflate they are still sticky and it can be very hard for them to re inflate properly. The double jab for steroids means the lungs are coated and can easily separate, hence vastly reducing the breathing problems.

Bloody hurts as a jab though!

basgetti · 02/12/2014 19:56

That's interesting regular, I thought it was just my hospital being uptight as usual, doctor gave that impression anyway! Does it hurt alot?? I'm pretty good with needles, but don't like the sound of these, or the spinal. I think it's fear of the unknown!

FranksBobot · 02/12/2014 20:49

Ahhh I see! Thanks ladies! Was beginning to think I was missing out on something.
Dd was quite phlegmy after birth apparently because of being delivered via section like you said regular. Must remember that this time actually as it freaked me out when she started coughing!
Oh dear basgetti nothing worse than rules being followed with out any common sense.

Fx for some December babies soon!

regular - awful being messed around. Why don't these people just talk to each other?!

1st proper day of ML here. Lots of sorting and errands...just trying to get organised.

CoventGarden75 · 02/12/2014 22:08

Ladies, sorry to hear all the pain you're going through, either physical or the other type. Hang in there, not long to go.

thanks for your comments Blush, but some good lighting and a professional can do wonders.

mw went fine, all good and baby is 3/5 engaged! it doesn't mean anything but it made me happy. How strange that i've actually become one of those enjoying being pregnant in the last couple of weeks Shock, another appt in a week time and a possible sweep if nothing happens by then

i can't wait for your news of babies arrivals Smile

Penguin13 · 04/12/2014 10:36

Regular sorry to hear that you've been messed around. So frustrating when medical professionals can't get their act together and make a decision. Any progress yet?

Hang in there all the ladies in waiting. Not long now. Sounding promising for you Covent Smile

regularbutpanickingabit · 04/12/2014 11:09

I had my baby! Long story but basically they ended up attempting the turn yesterday and it didn't work so in the afternoon I had a csection.
O s c a r weighed 8lb 5oz at 38 weeks and is so so lovely.

Kids adore him and are excited.

Good luck everyone!

CoventGarden75 · 04/12/2014 11:47

Congrats regular and welcome to Oscar Smile

Who's next Grin?

FranksBobot · 04/12/2014 12:05

Congratulations Regular Flowers welcome to the world baby Oscar!! Wow what a good weight for 38 weeks!

CallingAllEngels · 04/12/2014 13:48

Congratulations regular !

Lovely news to log onto.

We are trying potty training again today so all go here. DH is off as wellmso we can tag team!

Penguin13 · 04/12/2014 15:10

Yaaaaay! Regular! Congratulations SmileSmileSmile Amazing news. So happy that baby Oscar arrived safe and well. Hope you are feeling well too x

Had the sweep this morning. Not especially favourable so I have to wait a whole week till the next one. Boo. Baby is super low and my cervix is soft but seems like that doesn't mean all that much compared to the fact that I'm not dilated at all. I guess baby will come when they're good and ready secretly stamps feet and has massive tantrum about WHY baby isn't ready NOW?!!

Penguin13 · 04/12/2014 15:11

Ooh and good luck with potty training Engels!!

CoventGarden75 · 04/12/2014 20:19

penguin baby can't hide there forever, you'll have him/her soon in your arms Smile

so, DP dreamt that my waters broke overnight, we now, therefore have the mattress wrapped in builder foil. He also sanded and painted the living room floorboards, we are now locked into the bedroom for the night with no escape route. I'd better not go into labour tonight. Grin EDD is a week away anyway.

today, i think i've started nesting too.

basgetti · 05/12/2014 00:16

Congrats regular, lovely news. Hope you are recovering well from your section and having lots of lovely snuggles!

I've had an eventful 24 hours, had quite severe pain last night, ended up vomiting badly. Went to clinic today for first lot of steroids, was getting intermittent pain so they put me on the monitor and the pains were contractions! Gave me the steroids then sent me over to delivery suite to be monitored, they did a scan and it seems the pain last night was the baby turning and putting her head down! So section is now cancelled. Cervix soft and front is dilated slightly but back still closed. Contractions still happening, doctor thinks its start of things, more likely days than weeks! Gave me some pain relief and finally discharged about 10.30pm and just got to keep an eye on things now and ring them as and when they get worse. Now lying in bed obsessively feeling the tightenings and lots of pressure where her head now is!

Hope everyone is doing well xx

StrawbsAndCream · 05/12/2014 00:52

Wow Congratulations regular! Grin
What a good weight for 38 weeks, is Oscar our first thread baby?! Any news from Tiny? Hope you're both well and you're not feeling too sore. We'll have to have a post natal thread now.. Eek!

Penguin how was the sweep for you? Did it hurt? You never know, it may do something, my first one resulted in losing my plug. Hope something happens before the next one!

I had my second sweep today, it was the most glamorous affair.. One foot on the consultant's hip and one being held by the student nurse!! He didn't half hold back.. I knew what to expect this time so squeezed H's hand very hard.. He did a really good sweep, I'm 2cm dilated, baby's head is really low and he could have broken my waters if he wanted. Have since had very uncomfortable regular braxton hicks but they haven't really intensified yet. Hoping something will happen tomorrow, if not I'm booked for induction on my due date, so will definitely have a baby in 6 days time!

basgetti great news that she's turned! Hoping the contractions get going, sounds promising.

covent Grin you wait now, Sod's law will have it your waters will go in the night and you'll have to walk on the newly painted floor!

Hope everyone else is ok, the December babies are coming thick and fast on the other thread, let's hope we follow suit! X

Penguin13 · 05/12/2014 08:04

No news from Tiny (unless I have missed it) but I'm hoping it's just cause she has her hands too full of gorgeous newborn to type.

Sounding very promising for you Basgetti although I bet the baby turning at this late stage was a bit eye-watering! Hope things get going properly and you have your baby in your arms very soon.

Covent hope your DP's powers of prediction turn out to be more accurate than my H's although after a week he has now stopped confidently asserting every evening that 'tonight's the night'! Hmm

Hey Strawbs. Yep the sweep was pretty uncomfortable/a bit sore but again I think that's more likely the less favourable your cervix is. I haven't really had any effects since, although as I am in near constant pain anyway with the spd I did think it would be harder to distinguish any additional discomfort. I went for an hour's walk and bounced on my ball for ages but so far nothing. 40+4 today.

Your second sweep sounds promising Strawbs Envy Really hope things get going for you naturally now but how exciting that whatever happens you will meet your baby in 6 days!

Penguin13 · 05/12/2014 08:15

Sorry that was quite a gloomy negative post from me! I know baby penguin can't really stay un-hatched forever and in the grand scheme of things we are all getting our lovely babies really soon!!!

CoventGarden75 · 05/12/2014 12:44

basgetti that's wonderful news, i'm so pleased she finally decided to turn into the right position Smile

lol penguin, hopefully, now that your DH stopped his predictions, baby should make a move Grin. My DP didn't predict the date, just that i would ruin the mattress, that would be a shame, cos it's fairly new and v. comfy luckily, nothing happened last night, but the floor is not finished yet, great timing but it's quite cute to see him doing DIY in his underwear and knee brace Smile

that sweep thing sounds nasty Hmm

strawbs fx things get moving for you today

39+1

MrsFtn · 05/12/2014 17:24

Hi everyone, wow it's been busy on here again!

Congratulations regular I'm sorry you were so messed around at the end but I bet it all pales into insignificance now you have baby Oscar in your arms!

Well done too basgetti for baby turning just in time by the sounds of it!

To everyone getting impatient I am with you 100%. I had my third sweep today at exactly 41 weeks! I am in for daily monitoring as I am still refusing an induction. Every day I convince myself today will be the day and it isn't Sad

Penguin13 · 05/12/2014 18:42

Aw hugs to you Mrs you must be beyond fed up. Really hope that things get going for you soon. Will now stop complaining about being a few days overdue! I didn't even know a 3rd sweep was an option. Did they seem to think baby ftn would be making an imminent appearance?

MrsFtn · 05/12/2014 19:34

Thanks penguin. The midwife who did my second sweep last Wednesday said, and I quote, "you'll be in labour within 24 hours or I'll retire" which really got my hopes up. I had a show on the Thursday morning but then nothings happened since. It's DHs birthday on Tuesday so I was really hoping there would be at least a few days between them!

CallingAllEngels · 05/12/2014 20:11

Hope things get moving soon for you all ladies.

I am currently hoping the baby doesn't turn up unexpectedly early in the next week because DS has chicken pox!

36+5

CoventGarden75 · 06/12/2014 06:45

Had 4 hour sleep so far and I want some m&ms

StrawbsAndCream · 06/12/2014 09:36

Mrs how frustrating, crossing everything for you and hope something happens today after yesterday's sweep! Baby will soon be here, hope it's not DH's birthday but Sod's law would have it!

Penguin really hoping the same for you too, do you have another sweep booked? Has the midwife said how long they'll let you go?

Covent hopefully you won't get to the sweeping stage Grin it's not that bad just quite uncomfortable but some people find it completely fine I think! Hope you get your m&ms and some more sleep!

Oh no Calling! Hope DS is better soon, typical timing, hopefully baby will stay put for another couple of weeks.

I lost quite a bit more plug yesterday after a very long walk and been having quite a few period back aches but nothing intensifying still, this baby has 4 days to make an appearance on his own!
Had my first wobble last night, I think my mind has protected itself from actually believing I'd get a baby at the end of this and now it's finally here I'm feeling quite nervous! Silly seen as my job is looking after young babies and I could look after one with my eyes shut plus it's all I've ever wanted since I was about 14! I do suffer with anxiety sometimes though so I'm scared it will re appear when he's here. Feeling better today though, it must be the hormones Blush

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend, I finished wrapping my Christmas presents yesterday.. Which never happens this early!
