Thanks looby yeh it is the Cvs I will have next week. Sorry, getting mixed up. They will take a bit of the placenta to test. I would be more thn happy to hear your experience if you oils be so kind to share? Thanks so much.

cheshirem2b · 24/06/2014 20:11

Just woken from a post work nap (not done that for 2weeks)... Presume smudgy is having a growth spurt and tiring me out!

keepon hope your meeting goes well at the hospital. Fx for you. Like you, even with a risk of downs we'd keep baby. Will be harder but we'd cope.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 24/06/2014 20:11

mad it isn't something we have looked into. I may do now.

RPopz · 24/06/2014 20:14

Keepon - that is a good point to know... unfortunately a measurement is just a measurement. There's a huge combination of factors involved in calculating the Downs risk and the blood results and scan measurements are as important as each other. Midwives seem to overemphasise the importance of the NT measurements imo. Any one thing can skew the result. I'm so sorry you're going through this though, is it amniocentesis you'll be having? Fingers crossed for you xxxx Thanks

RPopz · 24/06/2014 20:15

The Harmony could be a good option as its non invasive isn't it? If finances allow xx

I had cvs done at 13weeks. They scan you first to make sure baby is in a good position and continue to scan through process so they can see what they are doing. They use a local anaesthetic before needle goes in. It feels uncomfortable but not painful. A bit of a tugging sensation. Once they start don't look at the screen, DH did and seeing the needle close to baby made him faint. For a tough soldier that doesn't happen often. They will the show you the scan afterwards so you can see baby is fine and we were able to hear heartbeat aswell. I managed to keep it together during procedure but broke down after listening to heartbeat. They say to rest just for that day but I slobbed on sofa for a couple of days. They phone with results after 3 working days although we had a weekend in the middle so was 5 days wait for us. They sex the cells so when they phone with results you can find out babies gender if you want to. We did and it was a nice extra after going through all of that.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 24/06/2014 20:23

Thanks mad. I will look into it further.

I am aware the cvs has a risk of miscarriage. I feel a bit confused as they really struggled to do the Nuchal fold measurement for me, then when they did she wouldn't reassure me it was an ok measurement (sure they did with my first pregnancy) plus 2.10 seems higher than everyone else's shared on here. They are insisting it is my bloods they have caused the high risk result though. I dunno... I am sure they have to combine everything to her the result as a high risk or not? I just feel frustrated, I am degree educated but feel a total dunce today- like anything they tell me makes no sense :,(

KeepOnPloddingOn · 24/06/2014 20:24

Sorry, I know my posts can be unintelligible at times. Using a phone to type from is a bloody nightmare.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 24/06/2014 20:26

Xpost looby so sorry!

Wow your post has really reassured me thanks. I shall des find out the gender :) what a lovely afterthought after having to go through it all. Was all ok for you in the end?

Thanks so much for sharing. Means a lot.

Loobyloo893 · 24/06/2014 20:33

Yes DS was absolutely fine. Results were all clear. Smile If you need anything or want to talk about it some more just ask.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 24/06/2014 20:36

Thanks looby glad your ds was ok. I am worried about the conflicting info too. In my leaflet midwife sent via email, it states I can have this test between 11-13 weeks. She is adamant I must be over 12 and now have to wait until next week to have the cvs! I need to know for my own sanity. The more I know and the sooner; the more I can prepare.

CallingAllEngels · 24/06/2014 20:37

Just caught up with a day's worth of chatter!

keepon I'm sorry you've had such scary news. Flowers

beth I'm sorry to hear your news. (((hugs)))

My mind's just gone blank at everything else I've just read!

Have had a long, shitty day at work. The next 2 weeks will be pretty much the same end of term madness.

DH was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes today. Will hopefully be the wake up call he needs to get his lazy arse off the sofa (not that I've been telling him that for the last...ooh...7 years!).

Feeling exhausted and hormonal. Where's that surge in energy I'm supposed to be having?

13+2

blizy · 24/06/2014 20:38

Keep on, sorry you are having to deal with this worry. My dd had Down's syndrome, it was not detected during my pregnancy. Scotland didn't routinely offer NT scans in 2010/2011. I only had the blood test which was a low risk, we only discoverd her DS at the post mortem review. I have everything crossed that your little bean doesn't have any disability, no matter the outcome you will have beautiful, perfect little baby.

Loobyloo893 · 24/06/2014 20:39

I was 13+5 (I think) so not sure about how early it can be done but nhs website says between 11th and 14th week.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 24/06/2014 20:43

blizy sorry to hear that.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 24/06/2014 20:45

I am 11+5so I should surely be eligible for one this week. I will push do it again tomorrow.

Camsie30 · 24/06/2014 20:47

KeepOn I have also had the Harmony test at FMC. If finances permit I would recommend it. My fertility doctor said that he doesn't think it will be long until it's available on the NHS. It's a scan and a blood test, totally non invasive and therefore no harm to the baby potentially.
Really hoping for positive news for you whatever you decide xx

ViviPru · 24/06/2014 20:52

Oh bloody hell KeepOn what a shock that must have been. FWIW, the studies and science behind the risk statistics of CVS are dated and do not account for today's advances in equipment and technique. The actual risk of miscarriage is now thought to be much lower, but there are no recent studies so they have no stats to quote.

At least with CVS you are likely to get results quicker than non-invasive testing. Personally, I'd definitely go ahead with it with some confidence. (As I still may have to, I've not had my combined results back yet).

We're all here rooting for you so please don't ever feel like you're being me me me Thanks

KeepOnPloddingOn · 24/06/2014 20:58

Thanks everyone. The harmony is quite pricey and the results are not as fast. Also with the CVs the results are 100% accurate. As vivi said the risk of miscarriage is minimal - the midwife assured me of this. I shall go ahead with the cvs. I really appreciate all your help and suggestions though :)

RPopz · 24/06/2014 21:07

Keep they do have to combine everything to get a risk result. 2.1 really isn't a high measurement (I've seen ones of 8 and 9!) - she probably just didn't want to tell you it was low risk as there's no way they can really know at that stage - not because the nt is out of the ordinary x

Minibagel · 24/06/2014 21:17

Keepon I know it sounds like a scary number but it's saying there is about a 4% chance your baby has downs, so 96% chance they don't. I wish they would alao express it as a % as the 1 in whatever is misleading and the 1 element of any figure means there is always a chance of a chromosomal disorder that is not detected at 12w.

Minibagel · 24/06/2014 21:22

Good luck with the cvs, I can understand wanting to know so you can prepare fully for baby's arrival either way.

When I was contemplating downs/trisomy disorders for ds1 (1 in 200 result, 2.5 nt result, and the cutoff for high risk in our area is 1/150) was mourning the life he wouldnt have, but then the more you look into it, you realise that was a negative and very narrow way for me to look at it, there are lots of amazing support groups and downs can vary dramatically in severity.
