Does everyone generally get to hear baby's heartbeat at their 16 week appointment? I had mine with my gp yesterday and she said she didn't have the machine so all a she did was check my heartbeat and my blood pressure....pointless! I'm really disappointed :-( I've never heard it and held of getting a Doppler as thought I'd here it at the appt...

PopcornFrenzy · 11/06/2014 20:12

Been on an Ebay frenzy this afternoon and managed to bag, 3 pairs of comfy cargo pants and 3 tops for under £50. Considering how expensive maternity stuff is I think I've got a massive bargain.

I will be passing them on again when I've finished with them too Grin

blamber · 11/06/2014 20:48

Alita, I think it's just online. You can find it by clicking sale items, then maternity.

Will definitely be watching obem, but on catchup as my oh hates it. Doesn't like anything to do with hospitals/ medical stuff. Promising for when I give birth!

Where can you get nice harem pants? They sound really comfy.

Stardust, I think it depends. Some do, some don't. I have mine tomorrow and last time mw said she would do it.

Petal26 · 11/06/2014 20:53

Evening!

Rubbish sicky day, nearly rang in to school sick. Managed to get there but felt very faint during hot stuffy assembly :-( was fine once I reached lunchtime. Hope you're ok button
Am getting a lot of stretching, below bump, chest pain and rib pain :-(

Excited for OBEM, going to have to do some paperwork first on the computer so I can justify it as a treat!

Got a lot of maternity wear (from last time and this time already!) so can share my faves...
Got a bit from Gap, was in Birmingham during last pregnancy and they had mega sale, got a lot for not a lot. I love Gap normally so not straying too much for me. Have bought 2 'normal' not maternity, maxi skirts from there recently which will be great with fitted maternity tops.
I have plain black work trousers from Mothercare which are really comfortable at the moment.
I have a lot of Red Herring at Debenhams, 2 really nice sleeveless smart tops for work, good in this weather, and lots of vests with lace borders, bought white ones to sleep in and black ones for during the day (OCD in me, can see which ones are pjs straight away!
I have got a bit from ASOS as well, skirts and dresses, bargains in the sale sections :-)
Shopaholic, me??!!
I know everyone says you're not wearing things for long but I didn't need such smart work clothes last time and I do like a bit of variety!

Petal26 · 11/06/2014 21:56

this one is so comfy! - 20% off at the moment and in black as well...

paid full price for this one, doh! Been good for school...

Alita7 · 11/06/2014 22:04

thanks, I will have a look blamber!

Stardust, it really depends where you live!

Petal sorry to hear you are still feeling ill, I'm only just starting to feel completely reliably well and am enjoying it!

Had my last uni lecture with my cohort as I'll be deferring a year :( we've had some reading weeks so not everyone knew, and I had a bunch of them rubbing my belly, felt a bit awkward and will not be tolerant of anyone else doing it but they were well wishing so I didn't want to be mean!!!!

BrandSnob · 12/06/2014 08:36

Morning Everyone!
Had quite an irrational few days. Haven't felt the baby move or kick since the weekend so I convinced myself something might be wrong, even though Google told me it was normal. Finally got baby to change sides by applying some ice cubes to my belly, but I still convinced myself baby only moved because it floated across rather than swam. I wanted to call EPAU but didn't want to make an unnecessary fuss!

18 weeks today and awoke this morning a few kicks Grin. Worry over til next time! when will it end

Petal26 · 12/06/2014 08:52

Thanks Alita, better m

TwigletFiend · 12/06/2014 09:51

I got a couple of pairs of harem pants from H&M, blamber, they're only thin cotton ones but so soft and comfy, I pretty much live in them! I have a pair of black cotton ones, a pair of very thin bright blue ones with wild animal print on and a pair of darker blue ones with a feathery cream print on that are a slightly heavier cotton and look ok with a cropped blazer for work. Would definitely recommend them for tender tummies!

Stardust, that's pants. What area are you in? If you have any friends with babies/toddlers it might be worth asking if someone has a Doppler you could borrow? Smile

Pahaha, DP flicked the TV on last night and OBEM was on, though we don't normally watch it. It was as the lady standing up gave birth and I thought he was going to pass out! I've already told him he's banned from the delivery room if all he's going to do is make slightly strangled, revolted noises and go green! Grin

mismylinford · 12/06/2014 09:54

brand - glad to hear your feeling bumps again. :-)
19 + 3 and bumping all over the place my dd had her head on my tummy yesterday and baby kicked her she was so excited wouldn't leave me alone for hours bless her!.
is anyone else getting baby brain... my iq seems to have dropped and i can make a full conversation without saying something wrong
also yesterday hd came home opened the fridge to find my sun glasses that i had been looking for all day.... i can't believe i put them in the fridge!
ddduuuhhhh

Kantha · 12/06/2014 10:12

Officially 20 weeks today Grin, and only 140 days to go Shock.

However these are adjusted dates from the scan and would suggest an immaculate conception. But still, it's nice to be halfway.

PopcornFrenzy · 12/06/2014 10:21

What's everyone got planned today? We are dressed for the beach and off to build some fabulous sandcastles and eat lots of ice cream Grin

The absolute joys of living 10 minutes from the best beach in the UK (slightly biased!)

Venus2 · 12/06/2014 11:23

I still have 158 more days. Seems like ages when counting days. Perfect day for the beach Popcorn. Mmm I want ice cream now. Our house is being carpeted today and since there is no furniture in the house, I'm lying on the sofa outside in the sun. While this might sound lovely I really just want my bed as I'm so tired after all the packing and moving last night.
I haven't bought one maternity piece of clothing yet. I'm just living in my drawstring linen pants and will start wearing maxi dresses now. I'm so determined not to waste money on maternity clothes as they don't last long but will probably end up pregnant again wondering why I didn't just buy them during the first pregnancy. Can't win.

Greenstone · 12/06/2014 11:25

It's a bit overcast here and not as warm as was forecasted - I've just put on a jumper and am worrying I didn't put enough clothes on DD this morning - ah well she'll be running about at the CMs. Popcorn, we live right by the sea too. I love it, I absolutely love where we live but we are renting in a very naice area with very naice house prices and I'm not sure we could ever afford to buy!

Kantha sorry I can't remember, did you already have your 20-week scan? Mine's tomorrow and DH is angsting a bit over whether we find out the sex. Knowing the sex must help with bonding and visualising things...on the other hand, surprises are nice. We tried to find out with DD but she was hiding. I think the plan is to not officially ask the sonographer, but we will be looking to see if we can discern anything ourselves Wink

mis kicking has really intensified here too over the last week. I had a nice long shower yesterday evening and lay on the bed for a while afterwards just watching my stomach move - it was mad to see it again. It's very low down still so I think the baby is breech at the moment. Tomorrow will reveal all!

Twiglet and Petal so sorry for you both that sickness is still an issue. Seems very unfair Flowers

TwigletFiend · 12/06/2014 11:45

Thanks Greenstone, though I am managing a lot better now after the first few days trial-and-error trying to get food intake right. Think yesterday's was probably induced by the headache I was left with after 3 hours on the phone in our hideous stuffy office. Poor Petal has definitely got it worse Sad

I am very envious of those with movement, though obviously delighted for you! It all still feels a bit surreal for me at the moment, it's hard to connect the scan pictures and the knowledge with the reality of an actual baby inside me, if that makes sense? I'm hoping being able to feel it move will help me feel a bit more bonded. It's a weird stage at the moment, because I actually feel 'less' pregnant than several weeks ago, when I felt so grotty and tired constantly, and no bump still really as a visual confirmation.

I am stuck in the office today, boo Sad. My concentration really wavers at the moment, especially when it's hot. (Hence shameless MNing at work!)

Alita7 · 12/06/2014 12:04

ooh the beach sounds lovely :(

I'm finishing my final essay today :s

I also loose my train of thought easily and get all confused.

19 weeks today :)

Petal26 · 12/06/2014 12:04

Whoops! Thanks Alita, better today!

Stop rubbing it in popcorn, some of us are at work Envy :-p!

TeaNCakes · 12/06/2014 12:15

It's so hot here, especially in the office I'm using today! I wish we lived by the sea, maybe one day!

Just spent about 30 mins on the phone to the hospital trying to sort out appointments. They've sent me a random extra appointment, so I asked what it was for and the receptionist put my through to a midwife. The midwife couldn't tell me what it's for, but did keep saying that I should keep it. They've also got me booked in for a growth scan the day after my consultant appointment, so I've asked for that to be re-arranged, and they couldn't sort it out on the computer system so I'm waiting for them to ring me back!

Best get back to work and stop daydreaming about ice cream at the sea side...

Greenstone · 12/06/2014 12:17

I have a question. I'm seeing some people tonight that I usually see once every 3-4 months. I'm seeing them in a sort of semi-professional capacity - they are not friends as such, but not colleagues either - more peers?

Anyway, how do you tend to 'announce' your pregnancy to people like this? People you like and respect and who would wish you well - but you don't see them often and aren't close to them? I do have a bump now, so although I don't feel like I need to announce anything I do sort of feel the need to answer the usual 'how are things' question with some kind of announcement!

I don't know, I'm overthinking it. I feel weirdly self-conscious sometimes about telling people I'm pregnant. I've no idea why.

TwigletFiend · 12/06/2014 12:38

I tend to find 'We're doing well thanks, we're delighted to be expecting' a bit less in your face than 'I'm pregnant!', if you see what I mean? I took the latter approach with family and good friends, but the former with work and former colleagues I still see occasionally, that sort of thing. Smile

Kantha · 12/06/2014 12:48

Greenstone - my scan isn't for another week when I will be 21 weeks (but closer to 20 by my dates). You must be the first on the thread to have a 20 week scan apart from those who have had extra or early scans. Good luck.

With the peers, when they ask, "How are you?" I would reply, "Very well thank-you. Actually I'm pregnant." Which isn't very articulate, but I'm sure you will get a nice response however you announce it.

ladydolly · 12/06/2014 13:05

Greenstone I'm with you, I found it kind of weird/difficult/awkward telling everyone, I actually ended up asking people to not keep it a secret so word spread rather than me having to share it all the time. I also used the 'we're having a baby' rather than 'pregnant'.

A lady here just told me I looked like a beached whale. I'm only 5 months. This is the same lady that said I should have been saving money for mat leave rather than going on holiday and expecting work to pay my benefits. I'm trying to remember she's made very different life choices to me and just isn't very empathetic and I mustn't be as small minded as her to judge her on her choices (because I think that's where these comments are coming from).

Breathe and rise above it

weeonion · 12/06/2014 13:16

Kantha - I had my 20 week scan last week but i think by our due date thread - I am furtherest on with a late oct date?? I was originally into November but brought forward quite a bit. There are a couple of others who have had their NHS 20 week scans too!

Greenstone - i would also go with the "fine actually with a change happening in not too distant future. I am expecting" kinda vibe.

In my "sector" word has spread quite quickly so I am not having to tell too many people. I have had a couple of congratulations cards sent through to office from peers which i find nice but a little unsettling. kinda prefer those to wait until baby has arrived!

Popcorn - nope - i am not envious - not one little bit of a day at the beach Wink
Alita - ggod luck with your final essay today - bet you will feel great to have it all out of the way!

Twiglet - i get what you are saying about no movement. I am getting little flutters but no more pronounced than in early week. DP and DD are desperate to feel L'il Green socks ( as this bump is called). Dang this anterior placenta!!
brandsnob - glad you felt movement. its a scary / unsettling / verging on terrifying time Grin
Greenstone - good luck tomorrow with yr scan - hopefully yr bean will be co=operative and have uncrossed legs etc for a peek??!

Greenstone · 12/06/2014 13:23

Thank you folks! Yes there is something about the word 'pregnant' that is almost ridiculous, no? I used it by mistake when telling work and felt very in your face. Since then I've been saying 'I'm expecting again' or something. I just get embarrassed about it, which is silly! Maybe it's also because in the arty sector I'm talking about not that many women seem have babies 'young' (I use the term v. loosely; I'm 31) and those who do tend to drop off the radar a bit because, well, you know. I sort of feel that people will be shaking their heads at me thinking 'instead of building up her profile she's having another baby and making life more difficult for herself'.

Lord that is RIDICULOUS. None of these people will be thinking any such thing! I clearly have issues.

lady - fucking hell at that comment! Ignore.

Alita7 · 12/06/2014 13:37

fingers crossed I actually get it done, it's not due for a while but I have things on so need to do it -.-

Greenstone I agree saying pregnant can be awkward, I tend to point at the ever growing belly, particularly yesterday when it came up that I wouldn't be at uni next year and those who didn't know asked why, I pointed at the bump and got those unsurprised but had been too polite to ask looks :p And that blood curdling 'was it planned' from one of them! But yes greenstone I totally get the feeling judged thing being 20 and still doing my nursing degree, I feel like everyone secretly thinks I'm an idiot! In a more formal situation I'd just say expecting or having a baby, casually in the how are you stage of the conversation.
