Sorry all that only applies if you are high risk.

Spotti · 01/06/2014 15:55

tries to hide under a big hat and make voice sound different so that nobody knows it's me<

Potentially dumb question: what's an NT test? And what does the amino test do? Should I just google it? scared of google

^ I've just realised that no matter how much I try to hide he fact that I'm a stowaway, you'll still see my posts under my name and know it's me...duh! --what a retard >rolls eyes

PolytheneGirl · 01/06/2014 16:02

Hi Spotti. He's fine and will probably be dining out on this tale for months now. I am very much looking forward to him getting home from work though.

Right NT screening is a Nuchal Translucency scan which measures the fluid on the back of baby's neck. They combine these results with a blood test and other risk factors such as your age to calculate the likelihood of Down's syndrome.

If that comes back high risk you can opt to have an amniocentesis (where they use a long needle to remove some of your amniotic fluid and look at the baby's chromosomes) or a CVS where they take cells from the placenta and do the same test.

I hope all that is right.

Should have said the amnio and cvs give you a definitive answer.

Spotti! How is everything on the buses? I miss the buses! I go and lurk but too scared to post in case people get annoyed. What's your news?

The NT tests is Nuchal something and you get it on your 12 week scan and I'm not entirely sure what they do (it's not invasive to the baby though) but they determine your risk factor for Down's Syndrome. If you're considered high then you might get an amniocentesis test which is where they take a little bit of amniotic fluid and test that further. There is apparently a risk factor for miscarriage with an amnio but that data comes from the 80s and hasn't been tested since and some say there is no longer a risk factor. I read that in a book anyway, no idea if it's true.

New craving after having just a little bit - DARK chocolate. Always thought of it as the pointless chocolate. Now I want it.

fancyacupoftea · 01/06/2014 16:08

Poly gave a much better answer than me.

PolytheneGirl · 01/06/2014 16:10

I've been giving it a helluva lot of thought the past couple of days. Have you had your booking appointment yet Fancy?

OP posts:
fancyacupoftea · 01/06/2014 16:14

Yeah it was last Tuesday (feels like ages ago!) but she sort of rushed through that bit. Plus I needed a wee really badly so couldn't concentrate.

PolytheneGirl · 01/06/2014 16:22

Lol. I've been trying to get DH to read the screening info but he just won't.

OP posts:
PolytheneGirl · 01/06/2014 16:42

Ok so it turns out DH was stabbed in the stab vest! He didn't tell me that on the phone. I'll be locking him in the house tomorrow. Shock

lindamagoo · 01/06/2014 16:44

I'm going to have the tests, never had them the last twice and i am by no means having them this time to change the outcome, I'm having them for my children's sakes, so we can find out if we are high risk and prepare the children so they understand a little about it. Does that make sense?

lindamagoo · 01/06/2014 16:45

Hi Spotti Smile

lindamagoo · 01/06/2014 16:46

Is that dh home now Poly? Keep him in forever now

barmybunting · 01/06/2014 16:49

It's a tricky decision Poly. I was adamant I didn't want the amnio or CVS because of the risks. But wanting to know is also hard. Do you and your DH know what you would do if it came back as high risk re having the amnio or CVS?

PolytheneGirl · 01/06/2014 16:50

He is. I've had a good cry and told him I don't want him to go to work tomorrow and he just laughed. Typical DH.

OP posts:
lindamagoo · 01/06/2014 16:55

Men huh, they think they are invincible Smile I'm glad he's ok and home now

Treaclepie19 · 01/06/2014 17:40

Glad your DH is ok poly, hope you are ok too! X

PolytheneGirl · 01/06/2014 18:10

So I've now cried 3x since DH got home and had a bit of a rant and sentenced the offender to life in prison! These hormones are a bitch!

Sorry I've got my head up my own arse now and completely forgot to reply to you Linda and Barmy about the screening. Linda that was
What I originally thought but now I'm just confused. I'm glad you've got it straight in your mind about what you want to do.

Barmy I don't think I'd like to have the further tests done just because of the risk of mc. But I think if it did come back high risk you would feel under pressure to do something. I also worry that if you did find out you were having a DS baby people might put you under pressure to have a termination. I wouldn't even consider that!

It's just dawning on me that it is in fact Sunday evening. The maths books I brought home to mark are still in the car and I have nothing planned for tomorrow. And no internet (except on my phone). And no lunch. Oops.

At least I've got clean clothes, somewhere to iron and somewhere to do my face and hair in the morning.

Ooh, just remembered, they had a mini project to do over the holiday. They can show and tell that. And PE second. That's the morning done Grin now; afternoon...?! It's so bloody got in my classroom, will need to get outside at some point too before I pass out!

fancyacupoftea · 01/06/2014 18:36

Retro my colleague calls that 'taking the books for a lovely ride' when they don't leave the car. You can definitely wing the teaching tomorrow!

Poly it's been a horrible day, you're allowed to have a moan and a cry! To both us and DH.

I've been thinking that one day we should actually set up a secret fb group (they're great - nobody outside the group knows they exist and they never appear on your timeline) so we can actually properly share photos etc without the fear of 'outing ourselves' to lurkers. One day.

lindamagoo · 01/06/2014 18:48

Poly I wouldn't risk getting the amnio but i'd like to know if I'm high risk just to be prepared.

RetroHippy · 01/06/2014 18:48

Definitely when there are some baby photos to share fancy Smile

I regularly take books for a drive. I've accepted that the only way I get it done is if I do it at school... It'll be non-book maths tomorrow, then I'll catch up after school. I now live 5 minutes away, so even if I stay till they chuck me out, I'll be home by 5:35 Grin.

MademoiselleG · 01/06/2014 18:49

LOL at the pointless chocolate fabcy !!

Big, big fuzzy hug poly , what a day. You are totally allowed to moan!

lindamagoo · 01/06/2014 18:49

Fancy that's a fab idea, one of the girls I was on here with last year set up a Facebook page for the girls due at the same time as her Smile
