Any thoughts on baby clothes? I'm wondering how much clothing to buy and any suggestions for best places to look. I hate how everything for boys is so blue and full of cars or trucks. I don't mind blue, in moderation, but I don't want blue everything. So suggestions: what to buy, how much, where to buy it? I'm happy looking second-hand...car boot sales would be fine, but I haven't been to one in years and years. How do I find one? (Weirdest question ever?)

tak1ngchances · 27/05/2014 12:04

I guess mama at the start and DH will be dada or papa. Then mummy and daddy.
Although I still call my dad papa or poppa smurf and my mum gets called Maman, mammy or bridgeen.

sazzlehopes · 27/05/2014 12:45

tothesea - don't buy much! people I'm sure will gift you with so many things we managed on very little. We had a boy and found that there was a lot of nice plain stripy stuff, red things etc that weren't too blue/trucks oriented. We got plain white sleep suits from mothercare which I love babies in - pure white...awwwwww.
And then I saved some money and bought a few nice bits from zara boys, h&m is good too and also found some excellent bargains on scandi brands on ebay like polarn o pyret etc.

Another scan at 3 today, hoping little mischief is going to play nice today, so think I will have a nice cake soon to get him/her wriggling abit hope they see what they need to see today.

YellowWellies · 27/05/2014 13:43

Its hard knowing what to buy clothing wise. My scans said he was big so we didn't buy anything in newborn size as we thought no point with a 9lber. But he was early in the end so was small - and wore newborn for nearly four months! Unless you live on a rock in the ocean - don't worry. You can always pick up a few bits in Tesco after. We did live on a rock - well Orkney! And coped fine getting emergency newborn and tiny baby size stuff.

Lou Jonas' awful colic turned out to be him in pain due to reacting to cows milk in my diet. He was even worse on formula. Now he sees a paediatrician about it and he told us there's no such thing as colic - its usually baby reacting to cows milk (or egg in your diet if BF) 40% of babies have this reaction. Infacol did f*ck all! Cutting out dairy cured his colic in 7 days.

tothesea Car boot sales, NCT nearly new sales and eBay are good for preloved items. The smaller clothes (premature, newborn, 0-3 and 3-6 months) tend to be in really good condition. I guess that's because babies have so much clothing purchased for them in advance of their arrival that there's no time for wear and tear.

Our local NCT has a sale every 3 months, last summer I got my mate a second hand cot, a Moses basket and an assortment of neutral baby grows for less than £20, she was pretty chuffed and uses the cot at her MIL's when they stay over.

As to how much clothing, probably best to wait for sage advice from others on this page. I'm not a good example, as my poor DD had a very limited selection - about 8-10 all in one baby grows for each stage, with accompanying vests, a couple of hats (my parents and inlaws are pretty obsessed with having baby's head covered), a pair of mitts to prevent scratching and an outdoor all in one suit for days out in the pram.

Saying that I did have a reliance on the kindness of others for anything more exciting than that. Although I often found the more exciting items, fiddly with buttons in an odd place, but that's just me.

YellowWellies · 27/05/2014 14:28

Yeah any clothing they wear before weaning (6 months) is usually in great condition second hand. Anything worn from 6-12 months in our house was wrecked with exciting orange puree stains!

Loulou888 · 27/05/2014 15:14

Thanks yellow no suggestions came my way like that from the doctors at the time! Will bare that in mind should it happen again. Fingers crossed it doesn't.

I had mainly 0-3 month baby grows with the little pouches that folded over little sharp finger nails. Only really had an outfit on if we were off out. So much easier having lots of them.

I was told ds would be around 7lbs like dd, however once he arrived he was 9lbs! All the newborn stuff didn't fit or didn't fit for long and I couldn't take it back as I had already washed it all. Don't buy too much just incase.....

LondonJen · 27/05/2014 15:59

I imagine we'll be drowning in a sea of pink once everyone finds out gender and buys gifts so I am not planning to buy much (she says) and what I do get is going to be my taste -bright multipacks from Tesco are £5 or £6 and I love the robot graphics in black& white. I want to get a starter set from M&S in grey thinking of hospital bag but they're out of stock at the mo. I looked on the nct website for the next sale and it said March! Not very up to date then!

LondonJen · 27/05/2014 16:07

Ooo Not on the high street have 10% off baby andchild items with code HALFTERM ... maybe I will get that bundler that I linked on here the other day..

This from the woman who was stressing about money this morning. Agh!

ohthegoats · 27/05/2014 16:36

Blimey, notonthehighstreet is all a bit 'team pink or blue' isn't it. There's even a 'man's changing bag'... god forbid a woman carry it.

YellowWellies · 27/05/2014 16:45

Loulou our GP was rubbish and the HV suggested he just needed a routine. He was coughing up blood (he was a v extreme case!) because he needed routine Envy. Luckily all of my sisters and cousins kids had the same thing so I just pushed and pushed for a paed appointment. New GPs, especially Mums are much better at dealing with it but the old fellas are shit!

mum2kiss · 27/05/2014 17:02

Well all is well I'm the tum area! Ended up having the dildo cam because she wanted to.be sure that the placenta was in the right place. Nice! Baby refused to have his pic taken so we got a really blurred pic of him/her standing on its head! Trying to convince dp to go in for a private 4d scan as all we have is 2 blurred pics so far!

porcito · 27/05/2014 17:15

good news mum2kiss!

ha goats, there was absolute horror in my staffroom yesterday when I suggested I didn't want pink or blue blankets to stop the old ladies crowing about when they could start knitting.

We're going with mamá/papá and mummy/daddy just to confuse matters. They shorten it to 'ma' here which is going to make me feel like I've aged 40 years.

My PIL AND parents are going to be here within the first few days of the baby. Thankfully I've sent them to stay somewhere else but I'm imagining some kind of murder taking place before the week's out...

binkybunny · 27/05/2014 17:43

Looking for suggestions... on Mothers Day DH got me a pair of maternity jeans and on Valentines he got me a lovely Bump to Baby journal. I think he might feel a bit left out of the baby things. I got him a baby Haines manual when we found out I was pregnant, but does anyone have any ideas for a daddy-to-be related Fathers Day gift?

mum2kiss · 27/05/2014 17:54

I've got dp an avengers style thirty that says awesome dad since 2014

We will be mummy and daddy in the early years I'm sure ;)

ohthegoats · 27/05/2014 18:08

Thankfully I've sent them to stay somewhere else

I think this will be my plan. Local B&B or Travelodge.

YellowWellies · 27/05/2014 18:15

Binky I made DH a dad to be kit for fathers day when I was preggers first time. Warm socks and a dressing gown for night wakings, good coffee and pegs for his eyelids to stay awake, some baby and me bubble bath and a funky 50s rockabilly tattoo pattern baby grow saying "I love Daddy" from Etsy and a dram of his favourite whisky to wet the baby's head with. He luffed it!

mrsb87 · 27/05/2014 18:38

I'm lucky enough to have my mum come and stay for a week when the baby by is born. I'm really going to appreciate her help as dh will still need to run a business and won't be able to have paternity leave. I have 3 dogs to look after too so I really will need her! Me and my mum are very close as I was still living at home when my dad died 7yrs ago and we went through a lot together.

pusscous · 27/05/2014 19:38

morning all, hope all had a great bank holiday. Im currently on page 28 of33 so will quickly post and then catch up.

Flip the heat is just about bearable sat in garden but walking outside etc slightly hard going. Not sure how Porcito copes with the heat. Not complaining per se but am now 40 miles in land whereas used to live barely a mile from the sea where most of my hobbies took place, different way of life..

Have been quite ill in the last few weeks that has played havok with my asthma. Three weeks ago came down with a cold, shaken and developed to other colds in two since then... now feel weak and cough is showing signs of improvment- was a horrible hacking/ retching cough a few days ago. Also mind is now able to focus on reading was stuck with instagram and tv for entertainment.

LondonJen · 27/05/2014 19:46

Good blurry news mrsb!

Honestly I am already fed up with the gender stuff. I've bought a blanket (bright stripes) and a sleeping bag so far and already I've had that it must be a boy. This is due to it being a navy blue sleeping bag with Tigger on. It was cheap and also I like both navy blue and Tigger. What's gender got to do with it?!! I'm not saying I won't buy anything pink or that I dislike some of the more girly things but I like what I have purchased for either a boy or a girl.

Sorry, rant over!!

LondonJen · 27/05/2014 19:47

Gah! Mum2 even. Sorry!!

mrsb87 · 27/05/2014 19:51

I did wonder what my "blurry news" was?! Hehe

binkybunny · 27/05/2014 20:02

Yellow thats a great idea and sorted Fathers Day out!

I'm planning on having my mum at the birth and for a few days after. My parents are then also coming back when DH goes back to work. I'm taking all the help offered... Although glad PIL's arent coming to stay for 2 or 3 weeks like they want to. My own parents are easy going, only staying for short periods at a time and happy to stay elsewhere if it all gets too much!
