I think the key with labour (and actually most things relating to small babies!) is to be flexible about your expectations. Some women get very depressed if the birth wasn't exactly as per the birth plan. Out of our two sisters four births - they had four sections (three emergency and one elective) therefore in my head I knew it wasn't all going to be whale song and I figured we'd likely be the same - that he wasn't born via CS was to me a bonus especially as on the island a CS would have meant a general anaesthetic and missing the first hour with J.

My daft obsession was being v worried about pooing in labour in front of everyone!!! I didn't! High five! Grin I bet I do it this time Blush .

Me23 · 15/05/2014 08:47

I'm glad to hear NICE actually finally look like they will be advising midwife led units and home births over hospital for low risk pregnancies because these are safer and lead to less interventions and better outcomes for babies (something that the research and midwife have know for years) this article is a pretty good one www.bestdaily.co.uk/your-life/news/a570876/hospital-or-home-birth--do-we-really-need-to-take-sides.html

Me23 · 15/05/2014 08:48

I meant to add giving birth in a mlu leads to better outcomes and less intervention for mothers and babies not just babies!

YellowWellies · 15/05/2014 09:09

I've been OKed for the MLU despite prem risk. Am v chuffed! I intend to park myself in a pool and swear lots. That's my birth plan. And not eat a pan au chocolat on the way to hospital this time. spent hours puking it back up

Loulou888 · 15/05/2014 09:09

I had an Episiotomy with dd and to tell you the truth what a relief she came out on the next contrAction with help of the ventouse. The actual heAling of the stitches was worse for me. Your body almost sighs with huge relief and you forget it straight away! Ds was just awkward and back to back and 9lb 5!

Personally I actually think it's better not to read into it too much but go with what your body can handle at the time. You might not be able to have an epidural etc and for you first timers it all feels surreal esp if you've had any pethidine.

pusscous we are scan buddies :)

YellowWellies · 15/05/2014 10:05

Lou yes me too! Episiotomy was NOT on my birth plan but I could have kissed the doc who cut my bits Blush . It really didn't hurt but the relief (compared to being stuck nearly crowning) when he plopped out and was put on my tum was fab!

Loulou888 · 15/05/2014 10:15

Nothing better yellow and the feeling of "I've done it"! Too

mum2kiss · 15/05/2014 11:03

I always tell my pregnant buddies to keep an open mind when it comes to labour and delivery. Anything could happen at any point so its important not to obsess over the birth plan. Either way that baby has to come out and once the baby is in your arms you really wont care too much about how it got here!

My labour was fairly quick and painful. I would have like pain relief but there wasnt time...this time.around the midwife has said not to pin my hope of getting any pain relief so I think I will opt for.midwife lead so that they can encourage other types of drug free relief. Really hoping the midwife is right about my.labour shortening to 2 hours this time too!

YellowWellies · 15/05/2014 11:32

Mum2 pals who had quick labours were forever getting told they were lucky. It really pissed them off as its the frequency and intensity of contractions that hurts not the length. And I've heard precipitous labours can be scary because things happen so fast.

A drama queen pal I know had a "horrific" Envy labour - 14 hours and even at the end her contractions were 15 minutes apart (imagine that much recovery time between contractions you could do a bloody crossword)! Mine were 2 minutes apart for 24 hours (a sign he was wrongly presented) and I still count it as a very good labour. I honestly didn't want to slap her when she discussed suing the hospital for making her go thru such a trauma without an epidural (baby had descended too far) - she had 6 contractions ffs in the pushing stage!!

tothesea27 · 15/05/2014 11:54

My local hospital only has a midwife led unit, so if I give birth there, they'd have to transfer me to a hospital about an hour away if anything went wrong. Still trying to decide, because as long as everything is low-risk it should be fine, but worried that the one-hour transfer could make a difference in an emergency. But we don't have a car, so getting to other hospital would be a bit of a hassle. Anyway, still have a while to decide.

This morning my husband and I were talking a bit about having a newborn. Apparently it came as a huge shock to him that newborns won't sleep through the night, and need to eat fairly frequently. Anyone else been surprised at what their husband/partners didn't know? (To be fair, he isn't really a baby person, and is definitely more excited for a one-year-old/toddler/older child. He likes to annoy me by asking "why can't they be born that big?".)

MundayCakes85 · 15/05/2014 12:12

Sorry wasn't having a go about sharing stories, I'm just trying to have a positive attitude to pregnancy/ pain of child birth etc!
Scan went great, all looks "normal" organs, size etc so that's good. Very active baby in there so had to have a wee and jump up and down to see if it would behave Grin
DH thinks he saw boy bits but we didn't ask to find out.
Captain how did your scan go? Any idea of sex yet?

sazzlehopes · 15/05/2014 12:54

Fedup and guns I'm having appointment beg June too to discuss elcs or not due to the first being emcs. I'm thinking I'll hopefully opt for vbac, but it does make me nervous too...

I had no stretch marks first time and used Neals Yard tummy cream/oil stuff. Was lovely - but it was expensive and I treated myself. This time round I'm using cheap organic coconut oil which you can buy from most health food shops - the stuff you can cook with too! It smells lovely and I reckon does the same job!

I need to take a pic of my bump - it is HUGE! yours are all so perfect and small! Plus i want you all to guess before i find out (hopefully) on Monday!

Haha ohthegoats kids questions amazing...you could mess with them....

sazzlehopes · 15/05/2014 12:58

Yay Munday, so glad all went well at the scan - I think it is quite hard to tell bits even if looking as most of the time i think it is the umbilical cord you are seeing. I'd heard they actually have to 'go looking' if you really want to know! oooh a surprise - you'll love it!

Captain - hope scan was ok - and do you know if boy or girl?! I can't remember did you play the gender game?
I can't wait to find out now...Monday lunchtime for me!

OP posts:
YellowWellies · 15/05/2014 13:26

I accused my husband of getting confused by the cord when he announced that J was a boy after the birth. Quick as a flash he retorted "no darling I think I know what I'm looking at". I was soooo convinced he was a girl!!!!! Grin

Me23 · 15/05/2014 13:50

munday glad your scan went well, hope captains has too.

TroubleAndFyfe · 15/05/2014 14:37

My son was 8lb5 at 36+6 Yellow but I'm not worried about having a huge baby if I go to 40+ weeks, I trust that my body knows what it's doing, it's getting the head out that's the important bit, after that it doesn't really matter how chubby the baby is! Grin
Thanks for the link me23, off to read that now, in a excited for my home birth. I have a pool now - was given one by a friend (who I met on MN last time) super lucky! Smile

pebble82 · 15/05/2014 14:49

I'm really lucky as I live about a mile away from the hospital which has a birthing centre with 2 pools and double beds for DP to stay too. Fingers crossed all will be ok for me to have him/her there. But as you say keeping an open mind and will go with the flow.

gunwalloe · 15/05/2014 15:47

Sazzle my second was vbac and was brilliant I was scared at the time but so glad I had opted for it after. I then had another vbac and sadly on my 4th a emergency cs again.

Captainmcgraw · 15/05/2014 16:15

Munday glad you're scan went well, great news.

Ours also went really well and we are having a boy! Very pleased. She showed us the bits and it seemed very obvious so going to trust it's right. Also saw consultant and been given go ahead for ELCS which is what I wanted. Can also change my mind though as don't need to tell them until 34 weeks so all good. Am feeling really happy and on leave for a week now. Off to (not so sunny judging by the forecast) Pembrokeshire.

Captainmcgraw · 15/05/2014 16:16

oh and I didn't play gender game but I had a feeling a boy based on this pregnancy being very different to the last and the huge amount of food I've been consuming!

LondonJen · 15/05/2014 16:28

Great to hear good scan news.

Tothesea my dp started this pregnancy saying I wouldn't need to take any maternity leave because I work from home! Hmm He still doesn't really get it even though I have tried to explain that baby might only sleep for 40 minutes at a time. I am glad he will be taking some paternity leave so he will see just what a solid 48 hours of life of a newborn is like for himself!

Any tips for trying to explain to your dp why it's hard work at the beginning gladly received!

Loulou888 · 15/05/2014 17:19

London wait until the baby is here! He will soon understand!

fedupofrainydays · 15/05/2014 17:29

I think everyone worries at some point about doing a poo in labour! I didn't either though - I got rid of it all in early labour when at home (sorry, tmi!)

My hospital has a brand new MLU just opened so if I go for a vbac I am at least starting off there (hopefully).

Hurrah for good scan news Grin

Just had a odd realisation that I'm almost half way through this pregnancy - something I wouldn't think I would see again after my miscarriages. Baby appears to be doing some gymnastics to celebrate Grin

Kirstipops · 15/05/2014 17:34

Lol Yellow "No darling it's defo a willy"!!

Ahead of my scan I'd watched some 20 week scan videos on YouTube just to get an idea of how developed and big the baby would look at mine, the sonographers in the videos mainly seemed to be identifying boy/girl bits by taking the angle from underneath the bum and between the legs? Is that how the team blue and pinks on here have found out too? I did get a view of this angle but my sono lady said nowt, but from what I saw it did look like I'm in the pink team! Feels like waiting for Christmas to find out for sure heehee!
Sea my dh is the same, looking forward to them being less "breakable"! Great to hear about good scans :)

fedupofrainydays · 15/05/2014 17:51

london - everyone under estimates the chaos it brings. Amazing for someone so small who does sleep a lot! It's bizarre. We found it very hard at the beginning - mostly because we didn't have a clue what we were doing! I still don't really know what we did in those first few weeks - total blur! And getting out the house takes an age at the beginning! Have I got this, and that, and this, and that.... But it doesn't last like that and I'm hoping as this is no 2 for us it will be a little easier in the early days.
