Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Tigerlion · 12/09/2006 18:50

Hope all went well at your appointment Saka.

Saw MW today for the last time until 40 weeks and we did not go through the birth plan. Do they not bother with second-time mothers?! I want to have something in place, just so they know my wishes and hopefully grant them!

MW told me that bananas very good for cramps so best to be eaten before going to bed. Do remember to pack some straws as the effort of putting a drink up to your mouth is quite a big one. And can't remember if anyone mentioned it but a waterspray is quite good for your partner to spray on you for when you get really hot.

DS was a summer baby so I only had babygrows for him. I am going to pack some little cardigans and blankets for baby but we don't need much more, do we? One book suggested snowsuit to go home in but I think that that must be for the midsts of winter.

Confused as to who Mother Inferior is. Can someone enlighten us?! Went to refresher class today and had a tour of the labour ward and tears came to my eyes when I saw the newborns. So tiny and innoncent...

Gingeme · 12/09/2006 20:39

Hello its me again. Keep reading this thing about getting cold feet in labour. I presume most of you have visited your labour wards? Were they cold? Sorry but the only reason to wear socks is if you want to go walk about during the first stages of labour and want to go outside. Other than that I wouldnt bother. A good bet is to pack some flip flops though especialy if you have some material slippers. Wouldnt want them getting soaked if your waters break!
Tigerlion just wright your birth plan anyway and make sure you hand it straight to your midwife as soon as you enter the labour room. Shell put it with your other notes and should have a look through when she can. But still remember its your birth and your in charge so if theres anything your not happy with or something you particularly want dont be afraid to say.

sallyrosie · 12/09/2006 21:22

Gingeme - my feet got cold - it was the only bit of me that did mind, everywhere else was boiling and ending up pulling off my nightie halfway through, ripping out the drip and epidural in the process (oops!) Still at least could then feel to push so worked quite well.

My MW has not bothered with my birth plan at all, but then she hasn't bothered with much. Basically told me that as it was second time I'd be able to write it myself. Err, thanks for all the useful advice then...She then had the cheek to write 'fully aware of options' on my notes...GRRR

Saka, hope you're ok. Know bleeding from single duct can sometimes be a worry but hopefully all just related to PG and nothing else. Good luck - you really are having a s**t time of it aren't you. Your friends sound fab though, wish someone would come and clean for me!

Re eating/drinking - they can't actually stop you from eating you know! It isn't recommended cos if you need a GA there is a higher chance of you aspirating your stomach contents into your lungs causing a potentially fatal pneumonia, but a recommendation is all it is and they do do things to reduce the risk of aspiration in the ridiculously unlikely event that you have a GA.
Having said that, I vomited all over my DD after the syntometrine injection last time and felt a bit guilty so I won't be drinking so much this time. Your stomach doesn't empty effectively in labour!

Am still trying desperately to induce labour - so far have tried aromatherapy oils, nipple stimulation which caused lots of braxton hicks but nothing else, DH is actually complaining about too much sex and still nothing seems to be happening...AARRGH...really don't want to be induced again...and baby seems to be trying to push its way out through my stomach rather than downwards...

Hope all sleep well...(hahaha fat chance)

Babies Born (!!)
August 23rd XxXKatXxX Girl 2lbs

I took arnica tablets (from any health food store) after first birth - I'd forgotton all about that. Don't know if they helped but can't hurt taking them.
I never got the cold feet thing either - the maternity ward was boiling hot. Flip flops definitely a good idea as I picked up a nasty fungus infection on my foot from the shower at the hospital last time.

girlygale1 · 12/09/2006 22:11

Hi

I didn't get cold feet with dd - have packed socks but they are just to come home in - just realised have forgotten to pack a towel!!!

Went to MW today - informs me that baby has only grown .5 cm in 2 weeks so have to go for a scan, wait to hear tommorrow when that will be. DD was tiny all through pregnancy and had endless scans, but I'm sure she grew more than .5 cms each tim, and this is the first time it has stopped growing. Am not too too concerned, but then the mind goes wondering and fearing the worst. (mind you if they say that I need to have the baby now I won't be too distressed - SO SO SO SO SO SO p*ed off with being pregnant!) (just as long as it is ok!).

Playschool was a wrench again on Monday - although I coped better this time! Guess it will just take a few weeks before the separation bit will ease up for DD. I hung around and she had stopped crying after about 5 mins so I know she just gets on with it eventually!

Saka - hope everything went ok with the consultant.

And I too are interested to know about motherinferior!!!!!!

Going to try to sleep, but know it is a no-hoper. Especially as at the moment, I eventually get comfy, and either need the loo or dd decides to wake up and need something!!!

WHEN WILL IT ALL BE OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How i miss turning over in bed without it being a major operation!

Winge over !!

agrimum · 12/09/2006 23:03

Glad to hear I am not the only one with feet like balloons and problems sleeping. DH seems to have turned a corner with my pregnancy - has gone from being very distant about it all to very caring. telling me not to worry about the dust and cobwebs that seem to be cultivating at the rate of knots and making me rest with my feet up. Will it last I ask myself!

Saka - hope tests went OK. being a dairy farmer's wife and I don't want it to sound trivial but cow's often burst a blood vessel and have blood in their milk. Could be similar thing? Hope all is OK for you.

jmcmugwump · 13/09/2006 05:34

....am hoping this not sleeping thing is good preparation for what is to come, but can't see the point if I am too knackered to give birth to the LO!!
Fortunately I have today off work, and finish at the end of next week yay
Finally got the nursery sorted at the weekend, had to try and shame OH into doing the painting - he said it didn't need doing, so I did one wall and all the cutting in - he finally finished it off but only after I had to ask him repeatedly! But now we have all the furniture made up it looks really good, we went to babies r us at the weekend to get a load of stuff, and I had worked out exactly what I needed, then he started saying 'why don't we get this?' so now I have spent an extra 200 quid on bedding - it is very cute tho' how could I say no???
Re the meet up - can I come too - will have finished work by then and would be really good to meet some of you as I couldn't make the other 2 meets.
Saka - hope all went well with the consultant, i'm sure their urgency is just precautionary.

Am planning to save nursing bra buying until my milk comes in after the birth, my boobs haven't grown at all (thank god as was 34F before pg) OH says they even look a bit smaller if anything because of the huge bump in comparison!

Think will see if a big bowl of frosties can do the trick and make me tired again.

Think the sleeping thing might be down to the weather - too bloomin' humid - haven't slept in anything since about 12 weeks, duvet's only use id for wedging under the bump, and don't even start me on the pillows, am really looking forward to being able to turn over in bed

saka · 13/09/2006 08:01

Just a quick note, as I am totally exhausted...

I had a cyst in my breast which burst !

They had to drain the rest of the cyst, which was just under my nipple (ouch)...

They also sent me to to the maternity ward to get baby checked out, he is fine, but OP...which apparently means his back to my back....hence the very bad back pain...

My poor dd had to coem with me. We had to leave at almost 5, and were busy when we got there, so the poor thing had a cheese sandwich, crisps and a choc bar for dinner. Jamie oliver would no doubt not be impressed...

love

saka

sallyrosie · 13/09/2006 08:35

Fab news Saka, hope it isn't too sore today. Sod Jamie Oliver, that sounds like the kind of tea my daughter would love especially when combined with a trip to the hospital...

saka · 13/09/2006 08:39

I was pretty impressed it was nothing serious too ! Its a bit sore today, but not bleeding. If it bleeds again, I have to go back. Im so relieved.

Yep, my dd was perfectly happy...it was me who had no dinner at all, a sore boob and guilt over the lack of proper dinner..hehehehe...

How are you Sallyrosie?

saka

DogMum · 13/09/2006 08:47

gingeme, jmc - the more the merrier. It's 3 Oct nr. Liverpool St planned for a daytime meet.

Glad the drama's over saka. Agrimum, I've got a feeling that advice from a dairy farmer's wife is going to come in useful over the next weeks and months.

Gingeme · 13/09/2006 09:01

Thanks Dogmum. Will be nice to meet up with you again. Just let me know where exactly. Might be brave enough to come on my own this time as its a day time meet.
Great news Saka. Glad your leaks sorted and it wasnt anything too tragic. Good that they checked baby out too.
Know what you mean about dh suddenly getting into the pregnancie bit. We went to get baby toiletries the other day and we realy realy dont need anything else for baby. But dh saw some of those towels with the hoods on them. Got 2 more now and some more booties and scratch mittens. Thought I was bad....Babay will probably never wear half the stuff weve got. Oh well Ill make the most of it while it lasts.
Hope your not too tired today.

whiffy · 13/09/2006 09:29

Glad you got the cyst sorted out before LO arrives, Saka, and pleased it wasn't too serious. I think toddlers are entitled to junk food at LEAST once a month, no matter what Jamie says (though I do feel sorry for the poor mites that get nothing else). I hade to bite my tongue the other day when my mum proudly announced she'd found another food that DS loved - tinned ravioli. Arrrgggggghhhhhhh. What with that and cheese straws she gives him I think I'm going to have to have words with her pretty soon...mind you she only looks after him a couple of days a week so I'm sure it's not doing any harm (she says, force-feeding mashed broccoli and omega-3 down the poor boys throat to counteract...)

BTW, motherinferior is one of the 'gods' of MN. If you spend too much time looking at the posts going up on the other threads there are a bunch of deities here who's word is revered as gospel by many and who I wouldnlt want to cross too often. The other names that spring to mind are Cod, CountessDracula, Colditz, ExpatinScotland to name a few. They are very scary though I have to say I generally agree with what they write. They remind me of the cool gang at school who would tell the rest of us a load of garbage about sex and babies and stuff and we'd believe every word they said because they seemed to know everything (though obviously I had my suspicions about getting pregnant from fellatio...)

whiffy · 13/09/2006 09:49

GemmityGem - are you around? I know you were on holiday in Italy but thought you would be getting back at end of August....hope everything is OK...

wuzzlefraggle · 13/09/2006 11:32

LOL, love the description of the mumsnet gods whiffy (id like to add custy to the list, she has to be some kind of prophet )

saka, glad to hear that everythings been sorted out!!

well, i cracked and bought maternity dungarees lol. laff all u like girlies, i dont care lol

hope that everyone is doing well and feeling ok xox

Swizzler · 13/09/2006 12:17

Step away from the dungarees! Mind you, I'm wearing enormous and unflattering trousers at the moment. Bit of a struggle finding maternity clothes to fit into, but I only have to look vaguely respectable for another week.

Saka: so glad it's nothing serious. Cheese sandwich for supper sounds like a balanced meal to me

DogMum · 13/09/2006 12:20

Glad you did the explanations on 'Their Omniscience', Whiffy. Wouldn't want to risk disappearing in a puff of smoke myself.

I've also updated the list because we'd lost Emmy (spotted because I knew there was another with same due date as me.) As well as GemmityGem, we haven't heard from MrsBlobby for months. I really hope she's ok. MrsBlobby if you're out there, please let us know how you're doing.

As for the meet-up details, we could meet at 11.30 (before lunchtime rush so we get sofas) or we could see if anyone knows the name of the place (Catgirl?) so we can try and book, or we could meet somewhere else. I'm easy.

MoreSpamThanGlam · 13/09/2006 12:50

Afternoon all.
Please tell me that this blinkin exhaustion is going to pass. I cannot bear to look at my carpet that needas hoovering anymore, and its like Groundhog day every time DH says he will do it when he gets home.
Had 37 week scan yesterday and was told LO was about 6lbs 7 ozs already and should be about 8lbs at term (which is small for me - Have 10lbers). So at least I cannot be bullied into elective CS. Anyone planning to labour in water? I would love to do this too but MW says nooooooo.....
Oh and one last maon ....bottom fruit! Howl!!!!

MoreSpamThanGlam · 13/09/2006 12:51

BTW - Whiffy - any signs yet?? I see you are due on the 1st like me.

Popsi · 13/09/2006 12:54

Girlygale - I also had endless scans with first pregnancy as they thought she was small and like you, everything was fine. I think they monitor you just to be on the safe side if you seem a bit unusual in any way. This time they moved my due date a week later at the first scan because of the measurements, so now of course everything measures fine - apart from i know their dates are wrong as i know date of conception (there was only one possible date)!

catgirl · 13/09/2006 13:19

re meeting up on the 3rd - Whiffy's suggestion of Starbucks is a good one (even though she won't be joining us!). It is just outside Liverpool St Station - if you leave the station by McDonald's and keep going straight (down Old Broad Street I think) you will see it. There used to be Boots/La Senza opposite, but been a while since I was up that way. 11:30 sounds good and first there can get a sofa downstairs. Guess as it is Starbucks they will do usual cakes/sandwiches etc.

Everyone welcome - as Dogmum says, the more the merrier!

am hoping to have a water birth this time, next appt at hospital is 21 Sept so going to ask if I can have a look - everything has been done up in the last 4 years I believe. Even if I just labour in the water and deliver on dry land!

Everyone (well, feels like everyone!) in work is commenting on how big I am, I keep trying to tell them that I have a max of 9 weeks to go - I WILL GET BIGGER . Not buying any more clothes - I hope this is my last pg, love being pg and love my boy, but too old to be a mum of 3! So no more clothes for me!

Saka, glad all ok.

Swizzler · 13/09/2006 13:28

Catgirl: had a tour of Homerton last week and the pool looks really good. There are two other rooms in the suite, so you get a normal room plus the pool room to use. There isn;t room for a bed in it. Am planning to use it myself if it's free.

wuzzlefraggle · 13/09/2006 13:34

id love to have a water birth, only problem is, ive been told that it all depends on how many widwives are there and if they are happy to do a water birth...so its fingers crossed on that front for me by the looks.

catgirl · 13/09/2006 14:05

swizzler - from what I remember of last time, the other two rooms seemed quite small? as the ward was full last time, I got a 'high maintenance' room with all the equipment etc, complete opposite of what I wanted, but midwife dimmed the lights and pushed everthing but the bed to one side.

So as long as you are not late and I am not early, we might be lucky! Or we might end up fighting over the pool!

And yes, I think it does depend on the day if they have the staff to do water births, if the pool is free etc etc.

Rumpel · 13/09/2006 14:06

Hi everyone. I am planning to have a waterbirth - our hospital is brand new and the waterbirth pool is huge with twinkling halogen lights on the ceiling! There are also 2 inflatable pools just in case its busy. There have been a number of teething probs but I am hoping they will be all sorted out before I go in. My idea of hell to be stuck in a bed unable to get up and move around!
My midwives came this week and went over the birthplan with me - 1 left and the student mw stayed with me and she was great - really helpful and interested. Must be horrid having a useless mw.
If you are late and threatened with induction you could try a couple of acupoints. There is one between the first finger and thumb at the top of the fleshy wedge where the joints meet. There is another if you take your hand and place it flat at the top of your inside ankle, about 4 of your fingers width up, just tucked under the bone - it should feel quite sore if you press it.
Or you could try acupuncture, reflexology or massaging the outer and inner heels. It's worth a try I suppose. I know how you feel - I haven't got long to go now and feel colossal and can't sleep at night as it is soooo hot and humid and I need to pee every 2 hours and turning over is a major feat!
I don't know about the rest of you but I can't be bothered with anyone. I just feel being pregnant makes you incredibly selfish - you don't really care about what other people want/need etc, everything becomes very centralised to the self. Of course it may be different for you who have LOs already.
