WELCOME! Thanks This thread is for all Mums-to-be expecting Maybies babies in (and around) May 2014! Please come and join the fun.

Put your feet up, get yourself a (decaf?) cuppa Brew and settle in to hear the aches and pains, trials and tribulations, shopping excitement and hospital bag woes of those in their third trimester.

Hopefully you'll find a listening ear and a wealth of knowledge. Everyone welcome, especially if you're new to MN and are just peeking in as you start your maternity leave.

I've been really bad the past few days Sad was struggling with the side effects of the iron and cocodamol together and I can't function of an afternoon/evening without cocodamol so I've been skipping the iron tablets. Hadn't realised how bad it was until my mum saw me today, she's usually very discrete but as soon as I opened the door she looked shocked and asked if I was ok because I look so pale. Looked in the mirror and I look like a panda Shock

I just don't know what to do. I can't handle the side effects, can't handle the pain without cocodamol but I'm getting dizzy just sitting up in bed and I'm really worried about what'll happen if my iron hasn't gone up next week. A mixture of Lactulose, Laxido sachets and as much fruit as I can physically eat isn't working on the side effects.

Sorry for the pity party post, just feeling a bit down Sad

kally195 · 12/03/2014 22:12

moomin what iron tablets have they put you on?

MoominIsWaitingToMeetHerMiniMe · 12/03/2014 22:28

Ferrous sulphate. I can't take the ferrous fumerate ones.

Bornin1984 · 12/03/2014 22:34

Moomin sometimes the best thing u can do is when u know u have done what u can and tolerate what u can is accept medical intervention, whether that means a blood transfusion then it's what u need to do! U can't keep on suffering like this chick :-(

eggsnbeans · 13/03/2014 01:49

Hi can I join you please Smile been reading for a few days and trying to pluck up courage to join in Wink

I'm due 14th May with DC2, DD is 17m and currently wakes every hour at night (and has done for months) so at least I know a NB can't be worse!

Suffering from the usual pg problems... SPD, sciatica, the dreaded pregnancy grapes!!! (although I have DD to thank for those) but otherwise everything has been good so far!

looking forward to getting to know you all Wink
x

ClearlyMoo · 13/03/2014 04:06

Welcome eggs! I'm a sciatica sufferer too! Just about managing to hobble around (physio says I MUST try to walk normally!) but can't imagine chasing a 17month old as well! Kudos to you!

It's REALLY foggy out (just looked out window on way to bathroom) not looking forward to early morning drive!

Welcome all newbies Cake
I've just worked out when my 'drop zone' starts, I've done it from 36 weeks though as thats when dd2 arrived, it's from the 26th April, little bit freaked at that thought, my gorgeous boy could be here in 6 weeks Shock

mumof2aimingfor3 · 13/03/2014 07:18

Hopefully he wont take after his father and arrive 6 weeks early, that'll only give me 4 weeks!

NannyPlumForPM · 13/03/2014 07:33

Grrrrr I don't want to wake up!!

randdom · 13/03/2014 09:07

Sitting in the day assessment unit waiting for attempt two at taking my 28 week bloods and lucozade test.... I better not need a formal Gtt next week after all this faff :(

dobedobedo · 13/03/2014 10:04

Morning all!

Well the person we hired in work to take over me while I'm on Maternity (in three weeks! Grin ) has left after 3 days! She couldn't handle working with my manager. I can barely handle working with my manager tbh, I had another job lined up when I discovered I was pregnant so I didn't want to leave and forgo maternity pay. I'm not letting it stress me out - I only have three weeks left here, and I don't see myself coming back so it's not my problem!

Today I'm hotter than the sun and quite a bit swollen. I really hope we don't get properly decent warm weather before baby decides to make an appearence!

Welcome eggs and any other newbies and lurkers whose names I forget right now. Preggo brain!

Spirael · 13/03/2014 10:36

Welcome to all the newbies/lurkers, and good morning to everyone! :)

Brief whinge from me. My lovely DD1 has given me her cold, so I feel predictably awful. Took a day off work yesterday to try and recover after getting zero sleep the night before. But I can't really afford/justify any more than that, so dragged myself in today.

Counting down the minutes until I can have another dose of paracetamol. What I wouldn't give for some decongestant-! On the plus side, at least this should boost my immune system so I can avoid any more colds for the remainder of pregnancy, and also potentially help DD2's initial immunity to colds.

Glad I decided to delay the WC vaccination, having that at the same time as this awful cold might have finished me off! I've decided to have the vaccination, but only after I've stopped work - so at around 34/35 weeks.

The homebirth team contacted me this morning to arrange my home visit. :) Booked for 8th May, just ahead of my drop zone which is May 9th - June 13th. Now just waiting for the health visitor team to get in touch for them to visit too.

Is it wrong that I feel mildly excited that the various groups are finally taking an interest in me/LO? Wink Up to now, I've been pretty much left to it!

MoominIsWaitingToMeetHerMiniMe · 13/03/2014 10:57

Starting with a positive: I made it into uni Grin

Any hints/tips for how to slow my heartbeat down? I'm in uni all day today so I can't get out (well I probably can if I explain, but I'd rather not have to). Every five minutes or so I'm having about 30 seconds where my heart is hammering and I can't breathe fast enough to keep up, it's making me feel dizzy and sick.

Bornin1984 · 13/03/2014 11:08

Moomin I suspect your higher heart rate may have something to do with you low iron levels!Hmm

U need to take it easy

dobedobedo · 13/03/2014 11:14

spirael I'm the same as you - waiting until I've stopped work before I have the WC because coping with work and spd is bad enough, I don't want flu like symptoms too!

moomin I saw my consultant yesterday. I have a heart condition which I've had since birth and I mentioned that I often have a lot of pressure in my chest, especially before BH contractions and I get palpatations etc. Even with my heart issues, the consultant was not worried - he said this is quite normal in pregnancy - your lungs and heart and everything else is squashed. The trick is not to panic. He's not even going to moniter my heart in this pregnancy.

But same disclaimer - if you're very worried - see a doc! (there's also a nerve which can get squashed, and I forget the name of it, but it controls how fast your heart beats - it's this that doesn't really work with me)

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 13/03/2014 11:27

Moomin that's all todo with the anemia (I'm the same hammering heart, dizzy, fainting, breathlessness, sore tounge etc)
Take it easy try not to do too much walking and standing. Xx

hobbjobb · 13/03/2014 11:32

Welcome to all the newbies!

After a wobbly, fed up few days I am feeling very positive. I had my health visitor come round today and she is lovely, didn't feel judged at all and the service is definitely there to help us mummies. I feel very lucky to live in a country with such support available, I know we all have a moan about the nhs sometimes but having lived in countries without social healthcare, we really are very lucky.

I've started washing all the baby's clothes and am feeling so excited that little feet and arms are soon going to be in them! I could melt, some of the newborn vests and things are sooooooo cute!!!

mrsfoo I was really upset about the blood prick but it absolutely doesn't hurt one bit! nothing to worry about. I jabbed my DP so he could see and he I diathermy lost any sympathy for me as it didn't hurt at all, damn, should have kept quiet and milked it some more Hmm

I had my diabetes check up yesterday and got told off for not eating enough, I had ketones in my urineich means my body is using its own fat reserves. Feels like a careful balancing act between not eating too much carbs and having high blood sugar levels, and not eating enough and being told off for that.

Have a great day preggos!

hobbjobb · 13/03/2014 11:32

Argh sorry for the mistakes, iPads suck!

Spirael · 13/03/2014 11:35

What sort of things have you been eating/drinking, Moomin? I find my pulse races after I have caffeine or sugar, for example a glass of Pepsi or a bar of chocolate. Might be similar if you're having a coffee/bun on the way to lectures?

Rather than breathe quickly, if you can then try to take slow, deep breaths. As deep as you can manage. :) Should help slow your pulse and it means the transfer or air is more efficient.

dobedobedo · 13/03/2014 11:36

hobb Did they advise you how to avoid the keytones? I've had ketones the last couple of times I've seen the midwife, but I don't understand. This baby is measuring big for dates and I'm hardly wasting away! I feel like I'm being told off for not eating enough, but I eat plenty including junk food so I just don't get it!

Another question for you knowledgable ladies: What about driving/being in cars when so hugely pregnant? I put the lap bit of the seatbelt under my bump, and the other bit goes above it mostly so isn't on my bump. Are we supposed to wear them a special way? Also, are we supposed to disable airbags or anything because we're pregnant?

sambababy · 13/03/2014 11:38

Ok, I've had enough of the nighttime loo visits. Somebody please give me a catheter!!

Good morning all! Brew

Spirael · 13/03/2014 11:46

I've not heard anything about needing to disable airbags when pregnant, dobedobedo. I imagine it's safer to have them than not, as they'll buffer you if thrown forwards in the event of a crash.

Far as I'm aware you're doing the right thing with the seatbelt already - the lap part should be tucked under the bump so it goes across your pelvic/hip bones. Means in a crash that they take the pressure and protect baby inside. The cross strap should go around the side and then over the bump (not across it) before passing between your breasts and over your shoulder.

The loo visits are training you to cope with broken sleep, sambababy. Wink Means that when the time comes, you'll find overnight newborn feeding a breeze!

NannyPlumForPM · 13/03/2014 11:49

It almost serves your work right dobe ! Let them see what a pain your manager is!!

Phew - start of many appointments today!! Got a consultant appt and scan tomorrow to talk about delivery Shock looks like they're going to induce at 38 weeks ish so that really isn't long. 32+4 today eek. Am going to have to abandon thread as Im a fraudulent maybie Wink

Gd news: looks like I'm going to be on insulin from tomorrow! Some in the morning and evening :( my before breakfast sugar levels are between 6's and 6.4 whereas they want them to be under 5.3 so they've said i can't really control with diet :(

How's everyone else's gd under control?

MrsFooCough · 13/03/2014 11:53

hobb and dobe I've found some really good websites about recipes and advice for GD mums, I'll try to put them at the bottom of this post. The thing of the ketones in your sample is probably because it's really sodding hard to keep your body from making them overnight. Most people with GD apparently have great difficulty with their morning pre-brekkie Blood Glucose Level (BGL) being way too high, apparently a simple middle-of-the-night snack can help with both ketones and high fasting BGL. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE SCIENCE but I hope being a good girl this week before my first appt will be good for me and I might even avoid a lecture on my activity levels (really bad sacroiliac pain and seriously crampy legs) yay!

(Although on the recipes site I tried the porridge made with water and no sugar or anything - it tasted like BUMS. Well, I dunno what bums actually taste like (honest I don't) but I imagine they taste like PORRIDGE MADE WITH WATER FFS)

MrsFooCough · 13/03/2014 11:55

nanny if you're perturbed about insulin for whatever reason, I read somewhere that metformin is shown to be just as effective, if you can tolerate it (some people get rotten tummy aches etc) so if you're bothered about injecting like I would be (!) then maybe consider asking why they're not putting you on metformin?
