I bought a moses basket second hand before we had dc1, dd, but she refused to sleep anywhere but on us (and barely slept anyway!). Ended up co-sleeping, then taking side off the cot and putting it against the bed so I could just slide her across. Dc2, ds1, however, loved the moses basket and slept in it happily until he was about 5 months. He slept in the pram if we were downstairs sometimes, but mostly upstairs in the moses. We weren't allowed to bring it with us when we emigrated, due to the wicker, so I had to buy something new here. They mainly sell what they call bassinettes here, haven't really seen moses baskets, so I ended up with one a bit like this:
www.babyfactory.co.nz/nursery-bassinettes/e4056763e1a54f35dae0fe8d42a9d5a9.html#.UyYAadi_nIU
Which lasted ds2 until he was about 6/7 months as they're a lot bigger than the moses baskets, and on wheels which was useful. Sold it though as thought weren't have anymore too! Not sure if going to get something else this time or just go straight to the cot...
Houses here are mostly on one floor, so no need for something downstairs (and great as had a C-section and didn't have to do stairs!)
I love looking at prams, we have been through quite a few :D We got a Mountain Buggy Duet (as my 3 are close together) when we moved out to New Zealand (they are hugely popular here, is, or was, a New Zealand make, and every other person has one :D) and I also have the Mountain Buggy Urban Jungle. They are brilliant, so easy to push and fantastic off road too. Not sure how easy they are to get in the UK but definitely recommend them, I have tried a lot of pushchairs! The Duet is fantastic if you have kids close together, or twins, it's a side by side double but is the same width as a single, so I can get through every door and on the bus easily, even though it often looks like I won't fit!
My advice would be don't buy too much, I bought a few packs of sleepsuits and a few packs of vests and my babies just lived in those - with leakages it is so much easier to change them. Lots of muslins - didn't really need them for dd, but ds1 and ds2 were sicky babies, and a pramsuit for out and about.
