How fast do we get through these threads?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Secretlypregnant · 26/02/2014 14:11

Well we're only 100 messages off needing a new thread, which we can then rename accordingly!

I am sitting here killing time on MN while I wait for DD to go to sleep. There has been a lot of protesting, and I cannot work while she's chuntering away.

It has all gone rather quiet now, so I may pop downstairs for a glass of milk, grab some of the chocolate and walnut biscuits I made yesterday and try to do an hour of work. Smile

The human race survived a hell of a long time without vitamin supplements. Nothing beats a healthy diet! Weirdly, whilst in hospital the other day with hyperemesis the docs decided to prescribe folic acid and thiamine...just in case I'm deficient. They didn't test to see if I was or wasn't so will ask for a blood test tomorrow at my 16 week mw appointment. I don't like taking synthetic vits and won't be taking them unless I actually need them.

lucyfluff · 26/02/2014 17:31

Oh poop Ive stopped taking supplements...can I get vitD on its own??

HungryHorace · 26/02/2014 17:40

The human race had a far higher death rate at birth in previous centuries as well as a far lower life expectancy!

We obviously don't know miscarriage rates etc.

It's well known that pregnant women can be deficient in a wide range if vitamins and minerals, even if they have a healthy diet. Purely because baby takes priority.

I eat a folate-rich diet (including fortified cereal) but am more than happy to take folic acid plus other vitamins. There's research linking low zinc levels to miscarriage, hence wanting to take that.

I have awesome iron levels even when I don't take any. The midwife at the hospital was VERY impressed with my post EMCS iron level!

Each to their own, but as certain things are recommended by medical professionals, I'm happy to take their advice, which is based on years of research.

HungryHorace · 26/02/2014 17:40

Yes, you can get Vit D on its own. It should be the 10mcg (or whatever the measurement is) tablet.

crazylady2013 · 26/02/2014 17:52

I'm still taking my pregnancy vitamins. I try eating healthy but I know I don't have my 5 a day so think it is the best way to cover all bases.
So I have bought Lactulose. Can anyone suggest the best way to take it. Thanks Grin

lucyfluff · 26/02/2014 17:58

Thanks hungry...will get them. I hate how big the preg ones make me gag!!

Crazy...lactulose syrup? drink it yumyum Smile

Shakshuka · 26/02/2014 18:02

I'm conflicted about vitamins. I think they are OTT here with them and I think Ruggle has a point that a healthy diet is better. There's been research which has shown that taking synthetic vitamins isn't that good for you. That said, I'm pretty persuaded by the vit D argument (although keep on forgetting mine!) especially since I wear a lot of sunscreen and also by the folic acid in early pregnancy.

But I don't agree with the argument that the human race has survived for many millenia so therefore natural has to be better and I agree with Hungry that that is ignoring sky-high maternal and infant mortality rates in the past (and in many countries around the world today), as well as all the accompanying morbidity.

I find that NICE are really good about presenting what the evidence of any benefit or harm actually is.

crazylady2013 · 26/02/2014 18:02

Yes, the syrup Lucy. Glad it tastes ok..I had visions of having to hide the taste with juice Wink .

HungryHorace · 26/02/2014 18:19

I take it in fruit juice / milk, Crazy :-)

Shak, I don't believe in long term use of vitamins, and generally I'd say that my diet is more than adequate for normal vitamin / mineral requirements.

However, I do think that pregnancy / post-birth is different. The toll it takes on your body is immense, and I think some people underestimate that.

My body is actually broken since last time (I get stuff ankles and hobble for 5 or so minutes after getting up and my tail bone 'pops' if I sit in the wrong / any position for very long) so god knows how I am internally!

I know that when we were both - DH and I - seriously sleep deprived, taking iron really seemed to help perk us up.

So, for me it's needs must right now, with a view to going back to a normal healthy diet once I finish breast feeding DC2, or 6 months post partum, whichever is later.

lucyfluff · 26/02/2014 18:33

I must be wierd and actually like drinking lactulose Smile

weeza13 · 26/02/2014 18:48

woohoo just got my appointment through for my next scan, its a bit sooner than I thought as I had my 16 week midwife app last week when I was 16+2 and have my scan next friday when I will be 19 weeks. Am so looking forward to seeing baby again as last scan seems yonks ago. We are hoping to find out the sex. Who else is finding out or playing 'wait and see'?
with regards to vitamins I am still taking pregnacare as I am vegetarian and although I eat a very healthy diet I want to make sure all the vitamin levels are fine,I figure baby will take what it needs, my body will do the same and get rid of any excess. You just have to do what feels best for you. (the vitamins are the size of horse pills though. yuk)
Hope everyone else is feeling well

Owlysims · 26/02/2014 19:34

Oh weeza that's very soon!! How exciting!!! I will be finding out the sex! To impatient! I did with dd as well!!

Secretlypregnant · 26/02/2014 20:37

Great news about getting your scan date, Weeza! I'm one of the 'wait and see' brigade, although I am also studying the scan pictures for the nub and guessing all the time. Quite enjoy the fun of that!

I'm vegetarian too. I've dropped off taking the Pregnacare - I took it up to 12 weeks as I did with my first pregnancy, but after that I kept forgetting and didn't really worry as I didn't take it after 12 weeks with my first either. I might get some vitamin D though.

I think I would start taking the Pregnacare again if I felt at all ill, but I actually feel really well at the moment. Having done it once and had a healthy pregnancy, I feel quite relaxed about it all and happy to follow my instincts on that score.

I've been feeling quite spring-like this afternoon. My kitchen is full of daffodils and the sun came out so I actually got some washing on the line. I even thought about giving the house a spring clean at some point soon. (Thinking about it and doing it are worlds apart, of course . . .)

Ruggle · 27/02/2014 08:04

I still don't think vit deficiencies were the main cause of higher mortality rates. Birth defects yes, but most deaths would have been through disease or childbirth complications. Not that I'm an expert in the field, but I still haven't found any convincing evidence regarding the use of folic acid, and I've done a fair amount of research into it. I also know of a study in Colombia where nutritionally deficient children were given sprinkles of vitamins and iron and their health was followed up over many months alongside a control group who weren't given the sprinkles. At the end of the study there was no difference in the groups and no improvement in iron levels whatsoever. This is anecdotal evidence from one study, but I'm yet to read convincing evidence that synthetic vits are beneficial.

Howly · 27/02/2014 08:13

I stopped taking my pregnacare on the advice that it was making my morning sickness worse!! I've not started taking it again but I have a healthy diet and I'm not too worried! Eat lots of fruit, salad and veg in the day so think we are ok! I also thought that it takes a long time ( like months) for the vitamins to be absorbed by the body when they are in synthetic form so what use would it be for the bsby now!!

HungryHorace · 27/02/2014 08:43

As everyone has said, each to their own. Your body / baby, your choice.

We are all adults able to formulate our own opinions, which is what we've done.

I'm more than happy with my research (and I've done a lot, because I always want to know EVERYTHING about what I'm doing, including TTC / having babies etc) and my choices regarding vitamins, medication and immunisations.

Owlysims · 27/02/2014 09:27

Agreed vitamins etc are a very individual choice! I didn't take anything other than folic acid with dd but wasn't advised to either. This time been advised pregnacare so will take until they run out then review :)

PinaColadas · 27/02/2014 12:35

I think Pregnacare are very good for the days when all I fancy is pancakes :)

flymo79 · 27/02/2014 12:59

I'm with Pina - for all the salad-scoffing and veg fanatacism pre-pregnancy, I found that in the first twelve weeks I couldn't even LOOK at healthy food, so I fully relied on the pills. Now I'm a bit further on and am eating a bit more normally with plenty of fruit and veg, I'm still taking the pills, as much out of habit as anything, but assuming that anything I or the baby don't need will be expelled as waste. I also know that it's as much the combination of vitamins and minerals in a proprietory product that help with absorption, so if I had a bad diet day, where all I ate was stodge, the bean would be getting some goodness (and I just have to deal with the constipation!!!).

ItsSoFluffyImGonnaDie · 27/02/2014 13:02

Hi all, just checking in, back to work after over a week off ill, whoops! Not much I could have done about it, just glad to be feeling better now. I've been taking the leftover pregnacare I have as it has the vitamin D I need and I've not had the greatest of diets in the last few weeks!

Has anyone else started getting back pain? I've been getting tingles around my coccyx for the last few days and it's worse in the evenings - I have a feeling it might be to do with how I sit at work. I've adjusted my chair and making an effort to sit properly but I'm waiting for a call back from my doctors as I don't want this getting worse without me trying to get seen (next available appointment is mid march Hmm )

flymo79 · 27/02/2014 13:16

Hi fluffy, glad to hear you're feeling better! I've had a bit of back ache, but mostly bad hip ache (I think from how I sit at work too, and how I lie in bed). let me know what the doc says....

PinaColadas · 27/02/2014 13:38

I keep getting a pain in one same side and the pain goes down my leg, I find it gets worse if i'm not sitting straight or if I sit on the floor (pinning and cutting if i'm sewing!)
Hopefully the doc can offer you a solution, it's hard to find a happy medium between sitting and resting and keeping moving so you don't stiffen up!

ScienceGeekGirl · 27/02/2014 14:45

I have same sort of thing piña. Have booked myself in for pregnancy massage at weekend in hope that helps a bit and I've bought a pull along bag for my laptop too as that was really killing me. Surely this back pain busy wasn't meant to start till I had a rechonisable bump. I'm 15+2 and you can only tell I have any bump if you compare my currently belly with that of last week in a picture I took. Other than that most ppl would have no idea. On FB everyone's bump is so well bump like. Sorry end of me feeling sorry for myself. But love to hear other ppl aren't pregnant looking yet.

crazylady2013 · 27/02/2014 14:46

By the sounds of it I have the same hip pain as you do flymo. definitely from the way I sleep Sad . Just ordered a second hand Babygennii ftom ebay, which will hopefully help as I got no sleep last night.
